.............I think he does a wonderful job at putting these works together. The only bone I have a the moment is that Mr. Walsh tends to make all his victims heroes/saints/outstanding figures of society. That cannot be true. All victims are not saint-like. Conversely, the bad guys have no worthy trauma in their background. Cut and dried, bad is bad, no slack from Mr. Walsh. I'm still thinking about that theory.

Walsh does it again

John Walsh is one of my heroes. This book, as his others, is another excellent in-depth look at Walsh's recent cases on America's Most Wanted. This book starts with a bang and keeps up the pace. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to protect themselves and their families from the becoming victims. These cases will open your eyes.

I have always been an admirer of John Walsh and this book reinforces that belief. The way he refocused his grief and anger after the murder of his son into a crusade for justice for victims of crime and their family is a testament to the his sincerity. I enjoyed reading about the behind the scene stories involving the cases profiled. Especially the funny stories during his ride along with police officers for an episode of COPS.

The book reinforces the importance of keeping your eyes open and reporting any suspicious activities. The police can't be everywhere. They need the eyes and ears of the general public. Time and time again have proven that it's viewer tips which have helped police catch these scumbags. Imagine what would have happened if someone in that apartment building had reported the suspicious odor coming from Ira Eichorn's apartment right away? Holly Maddux's family would not still be waiting for justice. He would not have had over 15 years of freedom in Europe. I did not know that my senator, Arlen Specter was his lawyer. I wonder what he says now about his famous client - his arguements for bail was ludicrous. The judge was insane to grant such a low bail but he had friends in high places and money & fame talks.I don't regularly watch AMW but I think I will now.

As an avid fan of America's Most Wanted and host John Walsh, I first began reading his books on the cases when No Mercy was released. When I visited my library recently and found that hehad just published a third book (second dealing with cases from AMW), I was on it without delay. After reading the book, I was not disappointed at all.

Unlike the last 2 books, this one goes a step further and shows us what really happens with the cases after the cameras are off. They don't sit around and sip coffee or pound down donuts...the people who work on the cases featured in the book show that with a little dogged determination and hard work, the fugitives of AMW are caught with amazing speed and rarely with extreme violence.

The book also touches the raw emotional level that we feel for the victims of the crimes and those affected by the senseless acts. I was heartbroken when I read the chapter on the woman who lost her seven-year-old daughter to drug violence and got the justice that she wanted for herself and her child, only to pass away a few years later.

But there are those rare times in the book where you can laugh a little at the exploits of the AMW team. The chapter which features a AMW/Cops crossover features the funny moment when John, assisting in the somewhat hilarious capture of a thief, suddenly gets crushed when the guy is cut from a fence and lands on the one thing closest to him...John.

I loved the book and I hope that John and the AMW team release a new edition with more cases in the not too distant future.

Another great read

John Walsh is great at fighting crime and has found a new voice in writing about the criminals he helps take off the streets. Pulblic Enemies grabs you at the begining and holds on tight. Every story is chilling and you are glad that John Walsh is out there watching over us like a big brother. The story of the Yosemite murders was particularly chilling. It thoroughly explains how the women where in a very dark and secluded section of the Motel. It actually gave me the creeps. Mr. Walsh does not exploit the victims or their families, he just tells the story like it is and leaves the reader with a real empathy for the people involved.

Hard-Target Interdiction

The book contains a lot of information, much of it good background info and a good read for people with an interest in the subject matter. However, I would be careful about characterizing the work as a "Complete .50 Caliber Sniper Course" or anything approaching a "Hard-Target Interdiction" protocol. It is neither, in my view.

Anyone having with so-called "designated marksman" experience(using current politically correct language)knows full well that there is no one as necessarily self-confident and as self-reliant as the sniper. These attributes alone preclude the application the "cookie-cutter" or "formula" approach taken in the book.

As regards interdiction, the effort will be short-lived and unsuccessful given a presumption of an untalented target. In the real world, combatants are often relatively equally resolved, talented, and eqipped and success and failure are separated only by a greater level of paranoia and prevailing circumstances, with the target having the home town advantage. A successful effort, followed by an unsuccessful evasion (capture), may be expected to result in the sniper's swift execution and an unsuccessful mission.

The real world is a cold and harsh one. That which is needed to survive in the world into which the author takes his reader cannot be taught the way he strives to teach it and success and survival cannot be achieved with the insights and tools he provides.

Read the book, enjoy it for what it is - a good read on a subject that is, for most, an esoteric one in which many have an interest and there isn't too much around to read.

Very good, but contains some mathematical errors.

This book is, overall, very good. The tactical and fieldcraft information is superb. Highly technical shooters should be aware that the information presented on "The Mil" on page 122 is erroneous. The correct values are: (1) There are 6283.2 mils in a complete circle; (2) 1 mil = 3.438 MOA; and (3)1 mil @ 100 yards = 3.600 inches. Use of Michaelis' values will put you off by 0.225 MOA (2 inches at 900 yards).

First, did you read the book, or is this purely a personal opinion. I would invite you to contact me to discuss your opinion. The reality is that nearly ALL sniper instructors in the military, current and past, did NOT see combat experience. I have a pretty good idea who this is, but why don't you step up and put your name to your review like the others did?

A great resource for long distance shooting
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-06
I read this book primarily for two reasons: (1) learn how to adjust for all factors in order to be on target with the first shot in varying conditions and at varying distances not known in advance of ranging, and (2) get an idea of specific makes and configurations of long distance rifles, optics, and related equipment so that I could make an intelligent selection. This book has been remarkably good in these two areas. It does present the information you need to know to dial in your shot accurately and adjust for changes in temperature, altitude, distance, and so on before you take the first shot. I've been pleased with the results using Dean's book and data tables. I've also used his reviews of rifles and optics to make purchases that I've been happy with.

If you have questions in any of these areas, this is a excellent book. Much of the book will be useful to you. The title does not fully reflect all the information contained in the book, though. It contains tons of useful information whether you shoot the big 50s or just 308s and 338s.

As far as other parts of the book of interest to real snipers or wannabes, such as target selection, evasion, etc, I have no expertise to judge, although I found the chapters an interesting read. My personal theory of combat is "when they're in range, you're in range" and therefore I'd just as soon stick to shooting paper targets or fresh venison.

A MUST BUY!

If you are interested in long range shooting and you like ballistics, GET THIS BOOK! I am in the process of moving up from a light-class system to a medium/heavy-class system, and this book had ALL the information I needed to get started. As for the use of theodolites versus lasers, I disagree with "Bragg"! I know from personal experience that lasers are very easy to detect on the modern battlefield. I'm looking forward to learning more about the use of a theodolite as supposed to a laser on longer distances. If you have any questions about this review or related topics feel free to e-mail me:

A Lot Of Good Principles and Concepts In This Book

The first portion of this book is really beneficial in its discussions of the various principles and concepts related to the authors' seven primary targets. I found some very useful information in this section.

However, I have to admit that I was less than impressed with the applications section in the remaining portion of this book. The illustrations were not much better than stick figures and the accompanying explanations were not very explanatory at all and should have been longer and more detailed.

Perhaps the author and/or publisher should reevaluate and update the applications section before the next printing.

To summarize, the first 59 pages are worthy of a 4 star rating, while the remaining 123 pages barely rate a 2 star rating.

This book was informative, demonstrating seven major targets to the human body. There is an overview of the importance of these target areas ( cervical vertebrae, elbows, knees, ankles, and feet ) from an anatomical perspective. It follows the philosophy of attacking an opponent's weapons before he can use them. Makes perfect sense. Following the anatomical section, there are sections concerning how to disable the various target areas ( at least 3 techniques each ) from a variety of positions. The book is simple but effective. The only problem I have with it is the illustrations. I'm sure the publisher saved money by using these, but at times they are somewhat confusing owing to their crude nature. Interesting and to the point, worth it's small price.

Excellent theory, but techniques are specialized

Everyone who thinks he might ever be attacked should read this book, but only if he is prepared to do some work in applying the information to his own way of handling violence. That's because the techniques presented are highly stylized. They look to me like Chinese Kung Fu. So unless you're an active practitioner of, say, Hung Gar, you're not advised to try raising your knee to your chest and kicking someone in the armpit while trying to survive an assault.

Still, the illustrations are useful if you're able to map the techniques to movements you yourself are likely to employ. It's also helpful to imagine using the information armed and unarmed, and against opponents who are either. In other words, to use this book, you have to generalize. If you have to choose only one fighting book, then this isn't it, but I'd still call it essential reading.

This book must compliment some type of fighting system

I would first like to get it clear to everybody that this is NOT a "teach yourself self-defense in 24 hours" book. I strongly recommend that you accompany this book with some type of fighting system. I recommend SCARS, Special Combat Aggressive-Reactionary Systems. Go check out their website....

This book teaches you about certain striking points on a human body that, if you were to correctly strike your opponent on any such striking points, you can easily damage, if not break, those joints of your opponent that are connected to these striking points. I am fairly acquainted with a good deal of the book's mentioned striking points.

The book also reveals applicable techniques that teaches you how to use these striking points to your advantage in the event you are in a fight. For instance, the ankle is a good striking point on your opponent's body. A strong side kick to the ankle is an excellent technique to use if you want to break your opponent's ankle.

Here is one technique that I especially love. It involves killing someone within a few seconds using just your bare hands. This technique is particularly efficient is your opponent sports a ponytail. Buy this book if you want to learn the technique I am referring to.

Vic LeMire provides some excellent technical advice for those who play the position and I recommend the book.

The picture quality is not that great and in some instances, distracts from the concepts explained. For an advanced goalie, its no big deal because it is easy to visualize Mr. Lemire's style tips and pointers, but for somebody new to the position, it could be a bit confusing.

That said, it is a superb manual for anybody seeking self-development as a hockey goaltender.

I was introduced to Eve Ensler through "The Vagina Monologues." That book is one of the most moving and vital books I've read in a long time. I eagerly grabbed "Necessary Targets" thinking it would have the same emotional impact as one of her previous monologues about the horrible acts performed against women in war. I hate to admit it, but I was very disappointed in "Necessary Targets." Until the last 15 pages of the play, I was unable to really find a connection with any of the women portrayed. I tried again and again and even felt guilty for feeling nothing. I would still recommend this play for the overall message Ensler presents and the play's themes. It is educational and eye-opening concerning the horrors of war that no one likes to talk about. Please, also consider picking up a copy of "The Vagina Monologues," by far Ensler's best work to date. You won't regret it.

I was fortunate enough to see this play performed live, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I was already an Eve Ensler fan, having performed myself in a college production of The Vagina Monologues, but I am also a harsh theatre critic, attending 8 or more professional productions a year (for the last 15 years) and often finding them lacking. Neccessary Targets is one of the best plays I have ever had the honor of finding myself engaged in. The characters are female archetypes we are all famillar with, and yet they each have their own unique stories. During the course of the play, they find themselves stomping bravely or furiously down paths they never even supposed were out there, hovering just off the beaten track...leaving the geographically familliar for the foreign, the psycholgically comforting for the disruptive, finding peace in sorrow, and joy in chaos. For anyone wishing to expand their understanding of how women in the global South or women in war-torn nations subsist psychologicaly--this is your play. Eve Ensler is a goddess. In this play, her creations range from an elderly woman who longs for her long-gone beloved cow, to a teenage mother, unwilling to acknowledge the loss of her newborn infant, from an uptight/urban therapist who needs to learn how to feel compassion and forget about wrinkle-free clothes, to a freedom-fighting hiking-boot-wearing all 'round adventurer with an intense insecurity complex. It's a must read and a must see.

Review Date: 2002-03-12
My first read left me disappointed because I thought it was a flimsy account of war, but finally Necessary Targets began to grow on me. I think it's ingenious that Ensler tells the story from an American perspective. As an American woman, I've never spent a single day or night in the midst of a warzone--and bombs and shells are a minute portion of what Bosnian women endured. Melissa's distance and J.S.'s transformation make it very clear how removed we Americans can be from the attrocities of war. Ensler is right--we only think about the bombs, bloodshed, and battles. Because the media tends to ignore the drudgeries and aftermaths, we do as well. Maybe I thought at first that this play was missing the noisy, concrete aspects of war. But it's the abstract--the emotional and mental damage--that people need to consider. Ensler brings that aspect of war hauntingly close with this play.

Eve Ensler's "Necessary Targets" is a thought-provoking play. In her introduction, Ensler notes that, in 1993, she traveled to the former Yugoslavia in order to interview female war refugees. This play evokes the lives of those displaced women.

The play deals with two American women: Melissa, a writer and trauma counselor, and J.S., a psychiatrist. They travel to Bosnia and hold group sessions with several women, of various ages, who have become refugees as a result of the wall. Their conversations are at times tense, funny, or painful.

"Necessary Targets" is a compelling depiction of a cross-cultural encounter. Throughout the play there was, in my mind, a question: Are Melissa and J.S. helping these women, or merely exploiting them to further their own agendas? Also interesting is Ensler's exploration of perceptions of the U.S. and Americans held by people from other nations.

In her introduction, Ensler notes, "When we think of war, we think of it as something that happens to men in fields or jungles." Thus, this play is a valuable window into the female world of war.

I need to make this point clear: If you are looking for a technical manual on Kyudo to teach yourself how to do it, your wasting your time. You will never find a Kyudo book with information detailing all the little nuances, tricks, short-cuts, or even how to release the Ya (arrow). Why? Because Kyudo is a journey and figuring it out of yourself is part of that journey. You do this by first mastering yourself, then you can go on to mastering the bow. The best books on doing this are not technical manuals, but the personal narratives of Kyudo masters. You learn a lot more by learning of their journeys, trials, and tribulations through Kyudo. Through this you can make distinctions between your questions, the questions they had, and how they inevitably achieved those solutions, but for your questions, the answers lye only within yourself. This is the only way you will 'really' understand what it means when someone says, "The arrow exists in the target before it is shot."
As for personal narratives by Kyudo masters, this is one of the best.

The traditional Japanese school of archery -- Kyudo -- is more than a technique to have an arrow hit a distant target. As one of the classic Ways, like flower arranging or kendo, it is an exploration into oneself. The author, now a Zen teacher and university professor, is not some a kid talking about how a day of Zen turned him into a Judo machine; rather this is a well thought-out, well-written journey of both Zen philosophy and martial arts practice. We follow Kenneth to Japan where he sits cleans the dojo, sits in zazen meditation, and becomes expert in Kyudo.

One of the first books to introduce a Way of Zen to the West was 'Zen in the Art of Archery.' Now `One Arrow, One Life' references Herrigal's classic, while providing a fresh expression of learning an ancient physcal skill, making them perfect accompaniments. The author has a deeper understanding of the history and methods of Zen, and clearly explains how they mate with a big bow, and how to carry the lessons on to your whole life. This book would be super for someone new to Zen, as well as someone who wants to revisit Herrigal. A lot of ideas that people talk about were put into place in my mind, then to my body and soul, thanks to this book.

Will this Keisaku help?

His "Book Description" states....
"One Arrow, One Life is the ultimate study of Kyudo (the art of traditional Japanese archery)". Well I have never read any other book on Kyudo or Zen for that matter, but I can only hope this is not the "ultimate study of Kyudo". If I had to explain this to a friend I would say if you're interested in Kyudo you can read this book and get some information, terminology and Dr. Kushner's experience with Kyudo but don't expect to feel too enlightened when you're done. The book is very short, 111 pages and that includes a 2 page glossary. Also don't expect to be shooting any arrows with better precision after reading this; it's more about Zen then about Archery which is what I expected so I have no issue with that. I kept thinking when is he going to tell me about some great insight, something important about himself; about life or something I can relate to never experiencing the Zen Way before. Well instead I get stories about how to move a rock, how to pick weeds or chop wood and flows of mysterious energy. Good Grief. I am not a Zen cynic, I just think Dr Kushner's experiences seemed a little trivial and not very enlightening. He did not "open up his soul" to his reader....if he thinks he did then perhaps I missed it. Now what did I like, learning the terminology, especially I enjoyed reading about Koans ...."Unsolvable questions..." (Has a dog the Buddha nature or not?). So really it's about a 3 star book, a little light on the depth, experience and inspiration of Zen. And I say this with controlled breathing and no delusive thoughts. In the Way of Zen......" We must recognize these flaws before we can transcend them."

Ken Kushner is a professor at the University of Wisconsin's School of medicine who has been practicing Zen Buddhism since 1978. In 1981 he began learning the art of kyudo, or Japanese archery. The main thrust of this book is showing us the "oneness" of life in archery and life in zazen. The point is not to promote archery as the ultimate path towards liberation, but rather, to demonstrate how any task we do can become a spiritual practice with the right attitude. Yet he does use many analogies by means of archery to make points about life in general.

In kyudo, it is said that it can take up to 30 years to master the art, so indubitably the way of archery requires a lot of practice. It's a lot like Zen, it takes practice which really doesn't end. To enhance his abilities concerning archery, Kushner realized zazen meditation was the driving force behind it all; for in zazen we face the difficulties of our lives, and with dogged determination they diminish. Zazen is all about attaining a one pointed mind, which of course is never without us, enabling ourselves to take on each task as though it is our one and only task. No future, no past, and not even a present. Only "this."

The title says it all. Everything is included in this life, there is no real dualism or separation. Every arrow which is flung is it, no going back. That's life. You must believe in your shot 100%. This book truly is a must have for all practitioners of Zen for it's contributions to our philosophy and way of life. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have always been a Transformer fan and this book really helped me to grasp a little bit more of the Transformers universe. If you're a Transformers fan you'll like this book not only for its information but also for the authors rather random use of humor as well. Even if you aren't a Transformers fan this book is still an excellent knowledge base.

I'm a 32-year-old, longtime Transfan. And I've been a Transfan since 1984.

PRIME TARGETS (a good book to have) has summaries of EVERY episode of TRANSFORMERS (including TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE), BEAST WARS and BEAST MACHINES...as well as summaries of every issue of Marvel US and Marvel UK's TRANSFORMERS comic-book series.

It's been YEARS since I've seen MOST episodes of the TRANSFORMERS cartoon. And, worse, I've NEVER had the chance to buy even one issue of the namesake Marvel UK comic.

But at least now, I get to read summaries of the US and UK TRANSFORMERS media.

What is this written by GO-Bot fans?
Needs to be rewritten with out all the opinion and mistakes.
Facts, not opinion are what are needed in this book. Heck they think Ravage is a "Dog" did the do any real research when writing this. Sections in the book make wonder why they even bothered writing this book other then for profit. What did they get paid for every word? Unnecessary sections that detract form the book and make stupid points ... Pointing out physic mistakes as if the cartoon was the "real world" come on its a cartoon anything goes and then the utter bashing of some of the industries well know pioneers of cartoon stories ... why again why did they write about this subject?
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK..save you money...

Just does not cut it.

I got this book because I am a TF freak. I was expecting a good book and was severely disappointed. Better luck next time.

This is the best book ever. It deals with character development on an episode by episode basis as well as giving plot summaries of the UK and US comics. The commentary is done by true TF fans who point out the goofs and bumpers with humor and a sharp wit.

Good Book. Read it back in 1995. Thought it was one of the best until i kept reading. Some other titles : Shotgunning by Brister, The sporting clays handbook by Meyer, Sporting Clays by Atwill, Precision shooting by Russel .

If you're looking for wingshooting instruction, keep looking

If your primary focus is sporting clays, this is a good read. From the start of "Taking More Birds...", the author states that the book is directed at the sporting clay enthusiast. I was a little vibed because I bought the book to improve my wingshooting. My decision to buy it was largely based on its title (last time I checked clay pigeons didn't have actual wings). There is a lot of good information and much of it does transfer to wingshooting. But if you are more interested in wingshooting, I would pick up the Brister book or the Orvis book (heck, even the author of "Taking More Birds..." refers to them - what does that tell you?). It's a good addition to a shooter's library, but definitely not the bible.

I know at the range we call our clays "birds" but I thought the title was a little misleading. The book is very helpful for range work and "taking more clays" but was disappointed when I found only a small section indicating that the technique would be helpful in the field. Upland bird hunting is considerably different than range shooting and those differences deserve much more attention than this book provides.

This is THE best book on the subject with the USMC S/S manual only half a step behind. SOTIC contains a more thorough review of mechanics, ballistics calculation and trajectory theory. As for the gentleman who wrote a review on 26 April 2000"The real deal folks", I agree with his thoughts on the book. However, Mr. A Reader, I would appreciate you telling me and the world what "sniper" team you operated with in the Special Forces- being that there are no sniper teams in the organizational echelon. You must be thinking of the USMC. There are however SOTIC trained individuals(usually 18B) who can collaborate with the A team(s) and/or operate independently. If you were in fact on an A/B/C TEAM, what might that teams organizational designation be? One more bit of information for all of you RESPECTFUL enthusiasts of Special Operations: the SF, SEAL's, PJ's, or any other USSOCOM units are not considered "black organizations".

This manual contains valid and useful information but is very poorly laid out. The table of contents and the index contain not one single page listing, Duh! Additionally all the figures are at the end of the chapter, hand drawn, hand written figure numbers or just plan missing. But the kicker is this and most of the sniper/target interdiction books are available in pdf format for free. Contact me at my email address. This is so typcial of the publishers Paladin Press, Delta Press, etc.

I was slotted as a police sniper on a SWAT team one year ago. I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about being a sniper since then. This has been the most helpful and best written book on the subject I have read so far. Kudos to the authors.

Yes, it could have been laid out a bit better, but that doesn't detract from what a treasure of information this book is.

...during times like we have now, to understand the fundamental principles along with the descriptive techniques amply illustrated in this rendition of literary substance, is a must for those serious in standing in the gap of our nation's threatened freedom...

...long have we been a target of opportunity, waiting for someone to take advantage as this nation has offered them ample targets of opportunity, and now, to wake up, realizing the profoundness of "freedom from fear", we desperately need to return to our very roots in winning our ongoing stuggle for what's been taken for granted for too long...

...not only for the counter-terrorist operative who may be involved in clandestine activities at home and abroad, but for the legitimate vigilante who's aware that the threat is as close as the next person who passes him on the street, the reader will find a wealth of information from which to launch his own credible and effective efforts of defending and/or protecting his own interests, either reactively or proactively...

...such information, as clearly presented in this book, should be in the library of every person who's aware that our way of life will remain so as long as there are those willing to turn the negative effects of man's inhumanity against man into a positive and consuming lesson of ethics and morality for any and all who may think that America is weak and ripe for the picking...and these lessons are from the inevitable school of hard knocks, magnified as only we Americans are capable of rendering in times of atrocities visited upon us...

...most excellent presentation of preparation and execution of matters that most would find reprehensible...

Excellent for the basics

This manual was well written, concise, and without opinion. The manual, written at fifth grade level is easy to understand though the pictures and diagrams leave much to be desired. Great range estimation chapter! Definate recommended reading.
