This is a great book but then again I'm prejudiced - I wrote it. I am currently working on a 2nd edition/printing with some updated and additional materials. More than 20,000 free copies have been distributed world-wide and over 100,000 people have read it on the net where it is available for free as either a download or read on-line.

The Best Cellar Book

If you are serious about recording (and drinking) your wine collection this book by Hugh Johnson is a must. It contains details on cellaring techniques, bottle and glass shapes as well as a history of cellaring. Most importantly it contains information on how to structure your cellar i.e. where to put your bottles.

First and foremost this book is for recording your wines - their location in the cellar, where you purchased them, cost price, quantity, tasted date and most importantly, what they tasted like. It contains a mass of pages for recording your case lots, as well as a large section for recording individual bottles as they pass through your cellar.

Resist the temptation to get software to manage your cellar, get this book and enjoy the relaxed pleasure of maintaining your catalogue with the old fashioned medium of pen and paper, and a suitably filled glass in the other hand.

Moving and heart breaking...

Review Date: 2000-11-05
I've studied so much on the second world war, seen so many documentries on concentration camps, and analysed so many films made about the life during Nazi Germany, I didn't think it would be possible for me to stomach anymore of it. Thus, when i came across Gena Turgel's autobiography on her life during Nazi Germany, I read the synopsis and seemed skeptical about whether or not to buy it. But it's title alone haunted me "I Light a Candle...". Being a sentimental and nostalgic reader, it continued to haunt me until I knew that I somehow had to read the book, now i regret not a minute of it. Hearing a person's real experience, first hand, is the other extreme of sitting in History class and making notes on what had happened from the textbooks. Finishing the book I felt almost as if I myself have known Mrs. Turgel, and respect her immensely...what she has gone through is heart breaking, her courage, her determination and her spirit has shown that...hence, making me repent for every single evil thing I have ever done to a single person. My heart ached and leapt and wept for all those who have been treated with completel injustice within this story. The feelings felt when reading Gena's account are undescribable, as there are no words effective enough to express the power of her words. The confusion. The Suspicions. The overwhelming, heart-stopping fear. The remorse. The melancholy. The forgetting. But most of all the power of forgiveness. The feeling of starting anew. I regret having to rate this book, as i feel that this is one that cannot be rated...it is a book of feeling, a test of one's empathy, conscience and forgiveness. dear reader, read it. And know the truth, i promise you no regrets.

Are you a distance runner, a cheerleader, a lap swimmer, etc? Forget the usual life styles inventories of the past. This book is engaing, funny, and relevant from the very beginning as it weaves sports-related names and characteristics to match with various types of Baby Boomer women. Drs. Mitchell and Brown expertly reveal the qualities and the contridictions of our lives in a way that will make you laugh, cry, and shout out loud with amazement at their insights of us female "boomers." The title alone shows great insight and humor.
Finally...someone who understands us and applauds us a women!!!

Innocence Sucked Into the Vortex of Terror
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-25
A sixteen-year-old girl under the pseudonym "Nadia," falls in love with "Amir," a dashing handsome young man who, like many late adolescents, has a religious conversion which compels him to join the GIA, Algeria's terrorist movement. We read Nadia's testimonial as told through journalist Baya Gacemi in a fast-paced 150-page narrative that covers Nadia's initial infatuation with Amir, followed by Amir's cruelty toward all except for his gang of thugs who conceal their selfish narcissistic thuggery under the robes of fake Islamic piety. Nadia becomes essentially a slave and a cook to Amir and his terrorist friends. In detail she describes their draconian cooking rules: not too much spice, peel this, don't peel that, etc. She slowly sees the ruthless violence her husband commits and how, like the Mafia, it destroys communities. In fact, one lesson learned in this book are the many pararells religious terrorist organizations have with the mafia, except for the fact that Islamo-facists are so obsessed with justifying their cruelty with religious verses, to the point that it's both laughable and terrifying.

In the book's final third, Nadia describes how the town, suffering so many beheadings (five girls beheaded for wearing short skirts), turns against the terrorists and will no longer be sympathetic. By the book's end, Nadia must find refuge for she becomes "a wife of a terrorist" and such is a pariah. Her courage to tell her story is another important testimony in the literature about how society cannot be complicit in its most malignant underground communities.

Mitchell's account of AMC cars and history is the best I've seen. It has the most current rendition and explanation of the AMC story of all the books on the subject. One of the books highlights is the amount of truely wonderful pictures of very rare cars that are not just cutouts of the AMC dealer brochures. These cars exist today and that means alot to any enthusiast. It is surely a must have for any AMC buff and is reccomended reading for any car enthusiast.

Beautiful & Delicious

I picked this one up at a used book store years ago, and it has been a source of inspiration ever since. The dishes are beautifully photographed. Note that there isn't a photograph of each one, but the ones that are pictured are chosen wisely. For example, it helps to have a photo of Lobster Clarence, since the presentation of that dish is essential, and quite impressive, if done well.

I have cooked a lot of the recipes in this book, with great success. I think, however, that the strength of this book is in the entrees. These recipes are definitely the most fun for me, and the variety is wonderful, including fish, shellfish, meats, game, and half a dozen ways of doing tournedos. Whether you are daydreaming gourmet dinners, or planning an upcoming meal to remember, you'll find the perfect entree.

The soups and desserts are pretty much typical of French Classic cooking; the vegetable dishes are a bit more interesting and diverse. All seem well-chosen to accompany the entrees.

One of the things I like about Escoffier is the freedom he gives you to adapt the recipes to your own needs & interests. Each recipe gives you all that you need to know to make the dish as written, but in many of them (e.g., Pork Roast a la Paysanne) there is room to add your own touches. The book is well organized, and you'll find the glossary quite useful.

Bon appetit!
