This is a tremendous resource for parents who, like I, feel they can help curb their hyperactive childs impulisive out-of-control behavior by being conscious of his diet. This book explains how a poor diet and/or food allergies can affect a childs behaviour then recommends foods to substitute or concentrate on as well as supplements that can also help. What I appreciated most was the food suggestions.

Treasure Trove of Women's Voices

Women poets in Appalachia have been pretty much overshadowed by their male counterparts--Fred Chappell, Robert Morgan, Charles Wright, for example. But tucked away in their coves and hollows, some women have been writing poetry that is the equal of those celebrated male poets and have been doing so for quite a while. This collection begins to give these women their due. Although I could have wished for more poems to go along with the essays, I am happy to have this introductory edition, because I hope it will spur more interest in women poets in Appalachia. It is a fine companion volume to Joyce Dyer's wonderful BLOODROOT, a collection of essays by Appalachian women writers.
Who could doubt that poets like Kathryn Stripling Byer, Maggie Anderson, George Ella Lyon, and Lynn Powell are as deserving of notice and praise as their male counterparts? The essays on Byer and Powell are especially well done. The authors, Anne Richman and John Lang, are excellent critics and their observations illuminate the work of two writers who have themselves illuminated their place in the southern Appalachians.
Felicia Mitchell has done poetry lovers a huge favor by gathering together the voices in this book. The authors of the essays are, as she says, "open-minded critics whose balanced analyses help to shed light not only on Appalachian women's poetry but also on a segment of contemporary poetry that is far richer than some people yet know--but will, if this book does its job."
Let's hope that it does. Move over Jorie Graham, Louise Gluck, Ellen Voigt, and others "up there" in your literary hotbeds. These mountain women are writing poetry that spins its language in ways more engaging than most of what shows up in the pages of THE NEW YORKER or the Norton Series of Poets. Give them a listen. You'll like what you hear.

Dr. Mitchell has used a simple, direct writing style to introduce Jungian theory and concepts as it relates to understanding the hero and the victim in everyone's personality. One of the primary purposes of the book is to provide vivid descriptions of the characteristics of the hero and victim within so that we can recognize these inborn parts of ourselves when they emerge.
In a unique and fanciful way Dr. Mitchell draws illustrations and examples from an amazing repertoire of myths, and fairy tales to bring to life the hero and victim in each of us. These fictional and fantasy characters help in our self examination of the hero and victim within us.
I personally enjoyed the delightful Lithuanian tale "The Fairy of the Dawn." Petru's story describes dedication, commitment, and the persistence as the hero's charge to kill a dragon. We learn from this story: "For the hero to act means to take risks and make sacrifices." According to Jung, "This is the highest level principle that operates within us". The stories of "Jack the Cunning Thief", "Big Klaus and Little Klaus" and "The Two Brothers," are also used to illustrate the development of the hero.
Mitchell states: "The hero's journey is an inner journey to gain understanding of the reasons for our behavior...with the resulting understanding and insights, we can more effectively return to approach life's problems with what we have discovered about ourselves."
The chapter on Heroism in Communication was particularly interesting and helpful to me personally.
Detailed tables within the text are valuable tools for further study and for future reference. The format and detailed presentation of these tables add a scholarly dimension to the book. Dr. Mitchell provides practical tools for the individual reader for developing strengths, potential, and talents. He provides perceptive advice for personal healing. This is more than self help book. It can be useful as a reference for the lay and professional counselor.
Dr. Mitchell's more than twenty-five years as a clinical psychologist, President of The C. G. Jung Institute, University Professor, and Lecturer validate his qualification to author this remarkable book.
In "Hero or Victim" Dr. Mitchell has presented indispensable insights for anyone who has ever felt victimized, for those looking for hope in facilitating their life journey, and for those providing private counsel in the area of victimization.

Mitchell has done agreat job by gathering all this data and turning it into a thoroughbred classic on antique picture frames.
Academic quality could be compared to Framing in the Golden Age but lacks the in depth detail of that great book.

An update and extension of the 1884 edition. Contains many individual family writeups plus historical sketches of townships and towns, all enriched with photographs of individuals, family groups, towns, churches and schools. Obviously cannot cover every family in Mitchell County, but does a reasonable job of covering quite a few, since it relies on personal writeups from family members and not all families may have responded to the invitation to submit a sketch. Lots of information of interest to any genealogy researcher.

Pledge of Allegiance issues are examined in this book about the flag and related topics. The book could use some updating with more historical information about the topic addressed. For example, the Pledge was the origin of the stiff-arm salute that was adopted later by the National Socialist German Workers Party. The early salute for the Pledge of Allegiance was the straight-arm salute. Francis Bellamy was the author of the Pledge (1892) and cousin to Edward Bellamy, author of an international bestseller that launched the nationalism movement. Edward's book was translated into every major language, including German. Francis and Edward were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and they promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. When the government granted their wish, government schools imposed segregation by law and taught racism as official policy. That behavior even outlasted German National Socialism. The Pledge's early right-arm salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge. In addition to the notorious salute, American socialists (e.g. Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) also bear some blame for the notorious symbol usd by the National Socialist German Workers Party on its flag. While Edward and the Theosophical Society worked together, the same symbol was used by the Society. It was used as alphabetical symbolism for socialism, and adopted later by German socialists as their flag symbol. Although an ancient symbol, it was altered for use as overlapping S-letters for 'socialism.' It was deliberately turned 45 degrees counter clockwise and always oriented in the S-direction. Similar alphabetic symbolism is still visible as Volkswagen logos. People were persecuted for refusing to perform robotic chanting to the national flag at the same time in the USA and Germany (to the American flag, and to the German symbol flag). All of the above are modern discoveries (do a web search for "stop the pledge") by a different writer, America's leading authority on the Pledge of Allegiance (the author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets").

This is just one of a whole bunch of book that will be coming out. The invasion of Iraq and the subsequent occupation, in combination with other events has changed the world order.
This book is primarily about changes in the US stated strategy of not necessarily waiting for an attack before attacking a suspected enemy. With the advent of WMD's and the stated intent by organizations such as al Qaida to use them, can a country wait until a city is gone before using force to prevent it? This has been a a question for many years, such as England/France attacking Germany in 1938 rather than signing a treaty.
This book is written by a series of experts from all around the country that bring differing points of view to the problem. Other books that are out or coming out will stress different points of view, and different, shall we say, levels of approval.
The whole concept of Preventive Force is new and being developed, this is still the early phases. This book gives a good analysis of where the doctrine is at the moment.
