fascinating police proceduralReview Date: 2004-02-02
She is temporarily assigned by a senior member of Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary to investigate the Maximum Crimes Squad. This elite special force of police officers deal with a Columbian drug lord who has just taken over the people smuggling business. Harriet Martens is to see how high up corruption goes in the Max but she faces one obstacle after another as the men and women try to stonewall her.
The author has toned down the protagonist's strident speeches thereby making her more approachable and likeable. Her investigative methods are easy to follow and eventually yield results because the heroine is tenacious and determined. A DETECTIVE UNDER FIRE is a very fascinating police procedural in which teamwork and trust in your comrades get the job of placing the criminals behind bars done.

This book started a 10 year passion for me.Review Date: 2007-03-20
It doesn't deal with the politics, causes, or events that led to the war. It deals with what the down-and-dirty fighting was like in the 18th century. Mitchell goes into the differences between the much vaunted minuteman militias (they were nearly useless) and the trained Continental army who, unlike what many people think, fought the British with European tactics. He picks ten well known campaigns of the Revolution and breaks down how the most successful generals were able to build a solid fighting force around a core of trained Continentals, while giving the notoriously unreliable militias simple tasks that deliberately got them out of the line of fire before they broke and ran. I found the account of the battle of Cowpens particulary engrossing.
I am not a student of military tactics, in fact I consider myself to be 'tactically impaired', yet I had no problem following not only the flow of battle, but the reasons why the commanding officer did what he did. It really served to break down a number of popular myths and show the field of combat as it really was. When I was done reading this book I was so enraptured that I read a dozen more books on the subject over the next year, but this one is still my favorite.
Armchair generals may find this book a bit simplistic and lacking in detail, but for most people it is a fine study of 18th century warfare.

If I have any complaint, it's that she's very liberal in her praise. She is unlikely to tell you when a given winery, much less a region, isn't very good. But so what? The purpose of this guide is to give you enough information to be able to go there and make your own judgments.

Tuscany revealedReview Date: 2006-10-26
This is a writer that really knows his subject. But his knowledge is conveyed in such a way that he doesn't make the whole subject of wine intimidating. Nor does he patronize his readership.
Monty Waldin is one of the few wine writers out there that both literally and metaphorically is willing to get his hands dirty; he goes to these vineyards, he works on the vines and the soil and he is not beholden to any paymaster.
WARNING: It'll make you want to go to Tuscany.

It covers all periods of the school's history, and major parts of the book are based on personal memories of old boys who attended the school, particularly the parts dealing with the more recent parts of the school's history. Some of these personal accounts were obtained from responses by old boys to the author's questionnaire which was sent to many old boys, and in some cases also from follow-up correspondence giving further detail.
The book covers not only major "public" events in the school's history, but also more personal memories of various boys, and sheds light on many customs boys observed and aspects of schoolboy culture which were current at various times. In areas like this it also includes aspects which are not so favourable and which may not be so flattering to the school's image (such as problems with bullying that occurred at various times), and thus gives an air of honesty and comprehensive coverage of relevant topics.
Other sections also discuss various teachers at the school, including anecdotes and personal descriptions that give some idea of the personalities and teaching styles of the teachers, and the book also gives some insight into the "politics" that went on behind the scenes between different teachers, new headmasters, and the like (such as the changes in the school's direction that took place when headmaster Roff took over from Healey in the 1970s, and so on).
Anyone who attended the school will be sure to find much here that will evoke old memories from their boyhood, and will be able to dip in almost randomly and find much of interest. Although I must admit that I would find it difficult to read the book sequentially, cover to cover (it would be almost too detailed for me to take all this in), I found much that brought smiles of recognition to me.
One slight disapppointment was that a couple of the more colourful nicknames which boys gave to teachers were toned down a bit in the book (only part of the nickname given). I suppose this had to be done in such a book, especially when the teachers may still be alive, and at least one of the nicknames in question borders on the unprintable.
There are also many photographs, and a C.D.-ROM is included containing a database of past students and performances of two of the school songs.
This book is recommended for any students or staff at the school who would like to relive old times at the school, as well as new students and staff at the school who would like to get an overall idea of the school's history and culture, and indeed anyone interested in schools or education in Australia.
