The Perfect foundation to an INTRO class

Philosophy has an interesting reputation for being a very difficult class for college students. I suppose this is because it combines the agonizing aspects of history with the frightening notion of critical thinking and argument analysis. However, "The Canon and its Critics" is an excellent step towards making philosophy clear to the average college student. The book is very broad and complete, and a reader could easily feel as if he's grounded himself in every aspect of philosophy. From metaphysics, artificial intelligence, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy, The Canon and its Critics attacks the most pressing problems which plague today's perception of philosophy. This book is excellent for the intelligent student who wishes to learn philosophy as it should be learned: in a complete, detailed, and historical as well as modern aspect.

The book can be difficult to read; but this is through no fault of the authors. The styles of some of the great philosophers can be overwhelming at times, which is why the book may be difficult as a stand-alone source of knowledge. In a classroom setting, it is invaluable. A student can be content with his teacher's explanation of the text, or he may read further to truly grasp the material as an expert would. The book has much depth, and much can be learned from it. I have had the pleasure of attending Dr. Furman's classes, and can assure anyone that the book was written by a very talented, intelligent man who seems to genuinely enjoy teaching and helping others to understand. I highly recommend this book as a teaching tool.

If I were in a position to change this book to better fit my tastes, I believe I would enjoy more writing from the authors, Furman and Avila. Most of the book is a necessary compilation; however, the authors are so talented that I would enjoy a fresh perspective on the information in the form of philisophical commentary. Nevertheless, it stands that the book is excellent as is; no book can completely satisfy the thirst for philosophy. The Canon and its Critics acts as the first, crucial sip.

Re-living The Past

I was given this book as a Christmas present by my wife. She has had to endure my love for these splendid ships for many years. As an ex-Union Castle sea going officer I opened the pages expecting to find a simple catalogue of events. In reality what I found was a book written by someone who looks back on these halcyon days with all the fondness and longing as I. For anyone who has travelled to and from South Africa either as a passenger or a member of the ship's company will delight in this opportunity to re-live some memorable days... and nights!

"Case Hysteries" is superb. It is one of the best examples of applied scholarship that I have seen. I say this because being a previous student of Dr. Mitchell's, I have privy of knowing that though she is a professor of English a large portion of her educational background is deeply rooted in the study of philosophy. "Case Hysteries" is unique because Dr. Mitchell has taken complex Freudian concepts and presented them in an artistic format. As much as this collection of poetry is about artistic expression, it is also a celebration of Freud and of women. Though the author is quick to point out the problems that the concepts of psychoanalysis have created for women in her acknowledgement page, she just as quickly recognizes the importance of the female voice that appears in this work. For anyone who is tired of the trite form found in a large portion of contemporary poetry "Case Hysteries" is a retreat to something good--something pure and original. This work is successful because Dr. Felicia Mitchell is not afraid to seek success in the tumultuous space of untried creativity. This book is for scholars of English, Philosophy, and knowledge. If for no other reason, this work should be read for its fresh unconventional creative approach to form and style.

Life after Auschwitz

Review Date: 2007-05-06
Trude Levi (Nee Mosonyi) relates her life before Auschwitz as a young girl growing up in Szombathely, 'the most anti-semitic town in Hungary, going on to her experiences at school during therise of anti-Semitism in her hungary, the horrors of Auschwitz, how she survived after she collapsed from exhaustion, on a death march, after the Nazis decided she was 'not worth a bullet'.
she go's on to describe her life after the holocaust, as a refugee in France, and her marriage to the schizophrenic musician Stephan Deak, and her life in
Durban, Israel and finally London, with her son Ilan.
Levi describes her life in all these places, describing the locations with accurate descriptive skill.
She describes her years of loneliness, with her husband in sanatoria, and her difficulty in dealing with his insanity, her work as a teacher, a librarian and a mother, and her later trials and tribulations.
An interesting account, because it tells of the life of a holocaust survivor, after her liberation from the camps, and how she survived through the decades.

Sean Mitchell takes you into the lives of Titus, Angelica and Aurelius. Titus is a single, handsome, black minister who is well kept. He is a true man of God that lives a Holy life (or so the story will have you to believe at first). Angelica is a young single beautiful woman that has been living the life of celibacy for four years, awaiting her "God sent man." Aurelius is what women would call the "Maintenance Man." He is a very attractive cook, caterer etc.

Titus and Angelica are engaged to be married after two years of dating. All is well until the hired caterers for her wedding cancel a month or so before. Aurelius surfaces when the Reverend Titus is out of town on a MISSION in a third world country. He is the back up cook that finds (enjoys) himself doing more than cooking. Angelica finds the replacement hideous but HOTTT. All of her suppressed sexual desires immediately resurface when conducting business with him. Not only do they surface, she also gives in to them.

While the Reverend is away, Aurelius and Angelica develops a fling that is only short lived. He is away doing his thing as well, don't get it twisted. What he's doing will have you asking yourself, "WTF????"

This book takes off fast so hold on tightly. It is very well put together. If you start reading this book in the evening, have your excuse ready for the morning because you will not get any sleep until the ride is completely over. JUST A WARNING!

Well written and incredibly helpful

Our company, like many others, has gone through merges, acquisitions, downsizings, and other transition. Marks, who is an independent consultant based in San Francisco with experience in over 100 organizational transitions, has written an outstanding book that tells how to revive employee morale, workteam performance, and organizational effectiveness following difficult transitions. Marks knows his stuff--his approach is well grounded in organizational behavior theory, but he presents it in a straight forward way. And, he offers numerous case studies from companies like Pfizer, Seagrams, Qualcomm, and Kyocera.

Marks presents a model for helping employees let go of the baggage they gathered from mismanaged mergers and difficult downsizings, so they can look forward to "charge up the hill" and achieve desired business results. This book is a must for any senior executives who has led a company through a difficult period--or for one who has taken over a firm after a merger or other tough period. It also is very helpful for middle managers and other employees. Marks shows them how to focus on what they can control over their work situation rather than fret about what they cannot control.

The book is enlightening, helpful, and not jargony. Am I gushing too much? Let me just say that after I read it, I bought ten copies of the book for my team!

First-class treatment of the subject
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-25
After finishing this book, it is hard to imagine there can be anything left to say about Charles James Fox. The familiar picture emerges of a politician who didn't have the skills or temperament of Pitt the Younger and hence was in opposition for most of his career. Yet Mitchell also makes two very interesting observations. First, Fox often preferred his private social life to politics. Did he, in fact, spend more time at the race track and at his London club than at the House of Commons? Secondly, Fox was less of a radical than most of his contemporaries thought. He was not, for instance, especially keen on far-reaching parliamentary reform. A big thumbs-up for this biography, not least for quoting verbatim from the strong language of certain original sources!
