journal writing novel at its best

This is an extremely well-written book that will both entertain and challenge the reader. Mitchell uses three different female voices to tell a complex story of eco-terrorism at Mt Mansfield, VT. While I did enjoy exploring the substantive moral and ethical issues raised by Mitchell's narrative, I most enjoyed the storytelling - the form of it, the back and forth, the masterful use of three distinct female voices, the slow build to a dramatic ending - this is a must read for anyone who loves a good book.

While the issues of conservation vs. development are timely, the impressive achievement of Mitchell's book is the narrative. He cleverly tells his story Roshomon-style through the "nature notebooks" of three women who are all in the same nature writing class. The different perspectives offer an unfolding understanding of a series of events culminating in a tragedy. The pleasure comes in the new level of comprehension provided by each of the three narratives. You'll want to keep flipping back to compare the earlier accounts.

Very engaging.

I always ask 3 questions of a scientific book. 1. What does it tell me I didn't already know 2. How robust is the evidence and 3. How will this change my practice.

This new book, rates highly in each of these areas. I think the author is coming at this topic from another perspective that most US physicians will initially wonder about. But actually, having given it a few weeks - a fresh approach is exactly what is needed. There quite a lot out there on neuropsychiatry - but here is a book for once that I find really helpful for solving real clinical problems. How often can you say that!

Best Neuropsychiatry Book Available

I bought this book with some trepidation as there are a number of neuropsychiatry books out there. Plus the author is pretty unknown, at least in the US. I remember 10 years ago the only books on the market were the large 1000 page volumes from Fogel and Cummings. The problem with the really large reference books is they are almost impossible to read art leisure (although great for look-ups). Anyway from out of the blue here comes a single author text which is just beautifully put together with literally hundreds of illustrations and tables. I am a sucker for high production value - an boy this is one of the best in medicine. Finally, here is a big that works as a reference text or for leisurely reading! I have also found that it works great for teaching and education - and is a good one to recommend to post-grads. Any limitations? Perhaps more on mild cognitive impairment or delirium would be welcome; but hey this book pretty much has it all. This is my most recommended hidden gem of 2005/2006.

I picked up a copy of this book and could not put it down for ages. It is replete with more trivia and odd facts that you could shake a stick at.

Many trivia books claim to be entertaining but Mitchell Symons's work really does live up to the bill matter. If you like useless information, you will love The Other Book.

This book is a must for any Patrick Swayze super fan. Krugel was obviously a big fan when he wrote it. Of course, the book was written long ago and Patrick has done a lot of movies since then. I am a member of his international fan club and have met him three times. He's a lovely man. I know a lot about his life in the last 10 years but not as much pre-1990. That's why I wanted the book and am glad I found it.

It's the perfect book for the young reader. Great book for a book report for the elementary school children. My son enjoyed the book and learned a lot about his favorite football player.

We struggled to find books on Payton Manning at our local libraries and even the larger-chain bookstores... nobody had anything useful on their shelves for a grade-school book report. So we bought this one online and it was perfect. It was easy enough for my 3rd-grader to read, and is filled with enough useful information for a book report on Payton's life and accomplishments.

An Important Translation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-16
Although he is best known as an artist, Oskar Kokoschka made important contributions to Expressionist literature as well. His 1907 play "Murderer, Hope of Women" is generally considered to be the first play to be recognized as an Expressionist drama (as opposed to the first one ever written) and his long poem "The Dreaming Boys" is a sort of Expressionist version of "The Drunken Boat." This volume allows you to read both versions of "Murderer" as well as Kokoschka's other dramas. The "Poems" part of the title is a bit disappointing because there aren't very many of them, but certainly seeing all of the plays--several of which are in verse--allows us to see how Expressionism, far from being a stand-alone, German-language thing, helped nurture Dadaism which in turn gave birth to Surrealism. There are definite surreal moments in certain of the plays, although the final work, an historical drama "Commenus" that was several decades in the writing, comes down at last on the side of emotion (Expressionism) as opposed to fancy. This is an important translation that deserves a wider circulation.

Elemental, intense, hallmarked by ecstatic language

Oskar Kokoschka was best known as a German expressionist painter in the early decades of the 20th Century. But he was also authored of a large body of plays, poems, essays, and autobiographical stories. Ably translated into English by Michael Mitchell, Plays And Poems is a collection of all Kokoschka's plays and poetry, plus one short prose passage, and will give an American readership an excellent introduction to a body of work that elemental, intense, hallmarked by ecstatic language, occasionally grotesque imagery, and the author's ideal of a humanity guided by reason, regardless of German history and his own personal experiences of conflict and oppression. Plays And Poems is a highly recommended addition to academic libraries in general, and 20th Century Germanic literature collections in particular.

He speaks with a foresight so keen and accurate it borders on prophecy. A must read for anyone who wishes to grasp the meaning of Revisionist Zionism
