Rich in word and imaginary true to many African American families, this book feels like a peek in the window of homes I know. My husband calls our sons "man." "Sister" is what we call the oldest of my sisters. I love watching my boys play in Daddy's shoes. Everything a good children's book on families should be--real sounding words and true pictures that make a connection to someone's life.

Great book for kids facing deployment

I purchased this book for my daughter during this deployment. The author is a wonderful lady, and she sent me a book for the USO at DFW Airport. While Kathy Mitchell originally wrote this book for her son TJ, she saw how this book could help other kids going through the same thing. In my correspondence with her, I found her to be a caring individual.
I would highly recommend this book for military families with small children.
In case anyone is wondering, I am not related to Kathy Mitchell in any way. My opinion of this book is based purely on its content.

As a Army wife and the family support group leader for my husband's unit. I say this book is a must read with your child when facing deployement. So many times we focuse on the spouse and forget about the kids and how hard it is to deal with deployment for them. I think Kathy does a great job explaining deployment and its on a kids level.
Thank you Kathy for a outstanding book for kids of soldiers!

Randal is a young journeyman wizard, bound by the rules of the Schola to wander the world and gain some magic knowledge. Then Randal met a mysterious dying wizard in his room for the night. The wizard asked Randal to safeguard a very powerful magical statue and hand it over to someone. With this statue came an adventure that forces Randal to outsmart a mercenary, a warlord, and a wizard. As if this isn't enough, Randal will also have to use all his knowledge of the battle-magics to defeat the fearsome evil power behind all this adventure.
I have always loved this wonderful series of books from the first time that I laid eyes on them. This is a great read for all ages. I recommend this book if you like wizardry, adventure, magic, or fantasy. Have fun!!!

Practical advice for the small investor

I agree with the other reviewer's praise of the authors writing style. Their prose is elegant and they make use of examples to paint a clear picture of the concept for their readers.
I am an experienced investor and found it insightful and enjoyable. But I imagine a beginner would also benefit. The concepts are so well explained I thought it might make an excellent textbook for a college course.
There is a very interesting section that describes the authors' research into long-term investment cycles and how to best match an investment type to a particular cycle. The authors have included all of their research in the form of tables, but you can skip the tables and read just their conclusions and advice.
The author has also included his real brokerage statements as an appendix. I didn't read these. I suppose they are there to add credibility to his outstanding track record.
My favorite section was a scholarly recap of all of the different types of psychological biases that afflict investors. These can be helpful in gaining a trading advantage on other investors or can be therapeutic in evaluating your own trading foibles.
I also liked the section where they took you through a typical trading day and shared their routines for gathering and analyzing data. This section had lots of miscellaneous tips and practical trading techniques that the reader can employ.
I received the book as a gift, but I would gladly have bought it and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in being a better stock trader.

I have not yet carefully reviewed every chart in this thoroughly well researched book, but I have read the text, and I think it is the finest, most insightful investment book ever written --which is perhaps reflected in the author's astonishing performance.
I would recommend this book to every person who invests in stocks---even if only in mutual funds.
Mr. Matson is obviously exceedingly well educated and qualified, and perhaps just plain brilliant, so wading through some of the book it is a bit tough. Nevertheless, if anyone wants a truly superb, incisive education in actually making a great profit in the stock market, this book, more than any other I have read (including Lynch, Makiel, Buffet, Graham, etc.), is the one to buy and study.
One caveat---I doubt that Mr. Matson would be able to achieve the same astonishing peformance were he managing a portfolio of more than, say $100M, as the methodology he uses seems to me to be more uniquely suited to small stocks otherwise unsuitable for very large portfolios.
But, for the average investor, and anyone who has less than, say $5 million, invested in the market, this book should be your Bible.
Truly a stupendous effort, and an outstanding book richly laden with insights helpful to the somewhat sophisticated average investor.
This book is definitely a gem.

As a Library Assistant studying for my Library Technician degree this set of books became my best friend. While most colleges or universities will have copies for loan, I found that I oftened added things to the book, thus the importance of having your own copy.
The first volume covers the rules for using and assigning DDC numbers.
The second and third volumes contain the schedules / summaries for actually assigning the DDC number.
The fourth contains the Relative Index (a Library Tech's best friend), which assists in locating appropriate numbers.
I know its a lot of money, but it is well worth it if you are serious about working in this field.

I happen to come across this book quite by accident at the library one day. I couldn't check it out at the time, but once I could, I went right back and got that book, and I tell you, this is no ordinary welfare mother, but then again, who is? or who isn't? Richeline was born in Georgia, finished high school in South Philadelphia, got married and ended up in New Britain, Connecticut with seven kids. She resolved for 1973 to write a journal of her life and concerns, and that she did. One of the entries while discussing her financial woes, she muses if she sold this journal what would it profit? sadly, she didn't live to see the results. She speaks of not being able to work for herself(although she does work parttime at a dry cleaners)and giving her body to science as a sort of payback, writing letters to the local newspaper editor and seeing them published as well. She yearns that her children would break the cycle and become better adults, and at the end of the book, there is a section on what happened to her children. She also talks about her health. She suffered from seizures, and she valiantly tried to keep it from her kids. Nevertheless, after reading this book, one would think twice about labeling someone a welfare queen or what have you. Richeline Mitchell may have been a welfare mother, but I believe she was far more than that. A great book and highly recommended for all.

The book Dear Self is an excellent book that everyone should read. It really draws the reader into never wanting to put it down. It appeals to people of every upbringing, age, and culture. The reader will feel as though they have experienced what the very writer has gone through. The emotions of sadness, happiness, and times of struggle have an immense affect on any person who reads this book. Superbly put together, Dear Self proves that with struggle there is ease. Richelene Mitchell, who documents these stories in a diary, proves that, although everyone has struggles or difficulties in life, with determination, patience, and acceptance of those struggles, one will succeed. What I found amazing about the writer was the fact that she never expressed pain throughout her illness of epilepsy. She continued to provide for her seven children, with endless love and support. This is most definitely a book that everyone can learn at least one lesson from, especially through the writer's strength, patience, and courage.

Another good Callan novel

For those who know the old British TV series of Callan, about a government secret service assassin, this book will be well worth your while to read. Even for those who don't know, this is an intricately-plotted gritty thriller which would interest anyone who likes a bit of backstabbing, murder and politics.
Callan, out of the government service, is met by some Greeks who want to hire his services for a little mission. When he hears the mission is a dangerous kidnapping in Greece he declines the job offer - but then Hunter hears about it and demands Callan take part. Along with his smelly thief friend, Lonely, Callan has to work with a range of untrustworthy assistants for a variety of devious bosses with several different agendas and preferred outcomes. Convoluted, tricky and exciting, it's another Callan novel worth a read - especially if you miss the TV series and you are waiting for the next box set DVDs to be released.

The third book in the Callan series and probably the best. Callan is hired by the department to go to Greece and do a simple job. As you might expect it turns out to be anything but simple but luckily Lonely is there as insurance.

The first Gladys Mitchell I ever read, and, again, one of her best. The plot involves three separate strands, both built around the various notions of death by drowning: the death of a snooping schoolmistress in the bathroom at the performance of The Mikado; the death of a madwoman in an asylum who fell into an ornamental pond; and an acquitted wife killer, George Bryan Cutler, based on George Joseph Smith, murdering two other people, and attempting to murder Mrs. Bradley. The ending is ingenious, with one of the most incredible motives ever to grace a detective fiction novel, though the book shares some similarities with "Speedy Death" and "St. Peter's Finger," in the scene of the crime and the method.

Charged with the mission of capturing mystery writers from the Golden Age, the Rue Morgue Press has now reprinted such greats as Dorothy Bowers, Constance & Gwenyth Little, Maureen Sarsfield, Margaret Scherf and many others. Gladys Mitchell is among those greats, having been compared to Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. Mitchell's output was 66 mysteries featuring Mrs. Bradley, a dashing and colorful woman with knowledge of both psychology and the law. DEATH AT THE OPERA was filmed for British television, although details of the book were changed. Diana Rigg portrayed Mrs. Bradley.
Calma Ferris, the unassuming arithmetic teacher in Hillmaston Coeducational Day School, has decided to underwrite the school's latest production, THE MIKADO. She is pressed into service as Katisha, a part for which she is woefully unprepared. Ferris has an uncanny knack of offending people, and thus ends up murdered before the second act of the opera. Enter Mrs. Beatrice Lestrange Bradley, called in by the publicity-minded headmaster to ascertain just who killed the quiet and virtuous Miss Ferris. But first, Mrs. Bradley has to take matters in hand:
"'It seems to me,' Mrs. Bradley remarked, 'that the evidence in support of the theory that Miss Ferris was murdered in the lobby is sufficiently strong to warrant further investigation, but not sufficiently tangible to offer to the authorities. I have reason to believe'-she took out her notebook-'that, as the result of a collision in the corridor, Miss Ferris had her glasses broken and sustained a small deep cut just beneath one eye. She went into the water lobby to bathe the cut, and I have not found out yet that anyone went with her.'"
Mitchell's style of writing is quite formal and extremely articulate, and her command of the plot and facts points to an exacting and logical mind. Mrs. Bradley is a kind woman who has no time for fools, and her character is at once a little repulsive (with claw type of hands and a beak like face) and fascinating. She puts her suspects at their ease until they reveal themselves. DEATH AT THE OPERA is an engrossing whodunit that is suitable for a nice day at the beach or for translation into a PBS movie. Angela Lansbury might be a great Mrs. Bradley!

This "Dictionary of PC Hardware and Data Communications Terms" is really a great book for those that want to know more than just what an acronym stands for. All the entries are longer discussions of the technology, with loads of tables, dates, which companies support the technology, where the technology is standardized, what it competes with and what its shortcomings are. And all entries have cross-references to related entries in the book, and most have World Wide Web references as well. I use this dictionary for two years. Today it is old but still not dead.

I would have to say that this is the most used book in my office. We have the data down pat, but the telco's have so many terms and acronyms that I would not be able to talk to a telco person if I was not able to look up the TLA's after the conversation. I highly recommend this book to anyone - from beginner to the advanced.

Each of fourteen chapters covers basic definitions, theory, and observed behavior for some category of criminal activity and/or the police, judicial, and correctional response. The basic text presents narrative, graphics, and focused text boxes, augmented by excerpts from a variety of authors with more indepth analysis of various problems. Each chapter comes with self-testing questions to reinforce learning. The layout of each chapter easily translates to a classroom presentation.
Presentation for the most part is even-handed, in recognition that criminology does not have perfect analyses or answers for what is very complex human behavior. Multiple theories of criminology are presented without predetermined selection of a single answer. Contrasting arguments for and against incarceration, capital punishment, and punitive sentences for drug-related offenses provide a good basis for further exploration in a classroom or seminar environment. The focus is on the United States, although some anecdotal context is provided for other nations. The text has been updated to include consideration of crimes of recent or renewed emphasis such as international terrorism and human trafficking.
"Criminology" is very highly recommended as a great teaching resource for college entry-level criminology classes.
