This book is a must have for any lover of the Victorian era. The photographs are gorgeous, wonderful quality. I have it on my coffee table for all to see. Please don't hesitate if you want this book because you will regret it. I have always loved this era, especially Victorian homes. If I had the money, I would live one. My dream!

While there may be a plethora of books on the subject of Victorian decorative arts, none have the ample number of photographs this one has.

My wife and I recently bought a circa 1900 home, complete with most of its original elements ranging from seven glorious mantels to original gaslight overhead lighting fixtures. The only problem was the awful interior paint job, and of course, lack of Victorian furniture.

We searched everywhere for a book which depicts correct colors and design elements to no avail. Then at the local library we came across this currently (at the time of this writing) out of print book. It is still available as new and used.

The text is excellent, however, the photographs are the main selling point. If you are interested in authentic Victorian style and want to decorate your home correctly, this book has it all.

Beautiful pictorial journey into Victorian homes!

A must for everyone who owns or dreams of owning a victorian period home. Covering grand to smaller scale homes, this book takes you through every nook and cranny of homes...from porches to living rooms to victorian style bathrooms. This book offers the reader so many ideas but is not a true reference book...no how-to's in this one but rather a visual treasure chest of examples for those looking to renovate or decorate in true victorian style. A source directory is included. Enjoy!

This book is absolutely amazing. It made me sob, laugh, smile, sigh, and get chills down my spine. You don't have to be a horse lover in order to enjoy this book- (even though I am) you just have to be someone who wants a detailed, heart-warming story that you will never put down. Mary Mitchell Barnes describes the relationship with her horse, Chinkers, in such a touching way. She treated him like a human and a life-long friend instead of "just a horse." I think that is what really made this book fantastic. I am so glad I read this book because no other one can match this. A must read for anyone!!!!!

This is a truly WONDERFUL book. I couldn't put it down. It's a hearwarming story of the power of animals (and one horse in particular) and their effect on our lives and souls. The story flows, cativates, and entertains. The author's style is warm and believable. She made me laugh and cry. I wish all books were this good.

A holistic approach to depression
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-18
Reviewed by Patti Yackulic for Reader Views (6/07)

For most of us, depression still carries a stigma. We're concerned that other people will react negatively towards us not only because they're ignorant as to the components and frequency of depression but also because traditional medications for depression may influence our behaviors. Dr. Michael Schachter's approach to treating depression may eventually alter public perceptions. Schachter approaches depression holistically.

Individuals suffering from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and a plethora of other illnesses are all offered medically approved alternate approaches to encourage cures or remissions. Daily we're bombarded with data promoting healthful lifestyles (eating, sleeping, exercise, stress management, etc.) in order to offset or manage physical disorders; however, Schachter's similar approach towards depression is novel. Indeed, at this stage, his philosophy does not garner the support of the majority of the medical community. Nevertheless, his work holds promise - at least according to his account in "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Depression."

Before I read Schachter's book, my understanding of depression was limited to psychology course rhetoric supplemented by limited details supplied by a long-distance friend who suffers from a bipolar disorder. As I gained a more comprehensive view of depression from Schachter, I found myself wondering if anyone could entirely control depression with a natural approach, or if some level of traditional medications would always be required to maintain balance. Even Schachter does not completely negate his natural approach being supplemented with a certain amount of medication. However, his premise is to primarily focus on treating depression without heavy reliance on these traditional medications which have potentially devastating side affects. Can I imagine my friend functioning well without resorting to her daily tablets? My well-considered answer is negative, simply because my friend does not possess the discipline to maintain a healthful regime. Nevertheless, I suspect that her level of medication could be lessened if her psychiatrist embraced Schachter's philosophy and encouraged her to adopt a lifestyle which would not only promote mental well-being but physical well-being also.

"What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Depression" is not a work solely for individuals afflicted with the disorder, but it is a work which should be consider equally worthwhile for the medical community as well as the general populous. Perhaps, in time, Schachter's approach will be mainstream and traditional medications will be relegated to an alternate status.

Depression affects 19 million Americans each year

There are as many books written about depression, as there are symptoms of this baffling disease, particularly since the malady appears to be intensifying among all age groups from children to the elderly. In addition, several books are written about all-natural approaches for treatment of depression.

However, Dr. Schachter's book may very well be the best breakthrough book to date for the content and information related to the many types of depression that afflict more than 19 million Americans each year.

The term, 'you are what you eat' has been around for decades, but this book brings a new meaning to that phrase. Not only does the author describe and outline the characteristics that define the various types of depression, but explains in layman's terms how to conquer, without medication, this debilitating illness by eating the proper foods in the correct proportions. Nutritional deficiencies are described in detail, along with a variety of symptoms that require specific supplements.

The book is divided into two parts. Part one, 'Coming To Terms With
Depression,' has three chapters that describe various approaches for treating depression and introduce the nutritional approach. You will also discover your biochemical profile and learn how to get the professional help you need. Part two, 'How To Prevent and Treat Depression Comprehensively,' has ten chapters that focus on the use of nutritional supplements for the many emotional, medical, and mental symptoms of depression.

Each chapter ends with an overview entitled, 'The Bottom Line,' which highlights the important factors of that particular chapter.

In my opinion, whether you are suffering from depression or have a loved one or even an acquaintance that is tormented by this widespread and vicious malady, this book is for you. I highly recommend this exciting approach as an effective alternative treatment of depression.

I have used a couple of other books in the past for using supplements and amino acids to combat my depression. This book is the BEST out of those three. Dr Schachter gives a more comprehensive overview of the types of neurotransmitters and than an approach to start balancing the inhibitory and then the excititory neurotransmitters. This book contains more information about amino acids and with a better understanding about what ranges of each you could try. I have been trying this and it has been helping me. Plus there is much more in this book such as lists of medical tests, herbs, diet, toxins, hormones, light and stories.

My 2 year old even loves this book. The photographs are beautiful and drawings cute. The story is sweet. And with instructions on how to make a kite, there's little to not like about this book. I'm normally against judging a book by its cover but if you are charmed by the cover of this book you'll be charmed by the book.

Excellent guide to wineries in France

Review Date: 2002-08-11
My husband and I wanted to do some time in "wine country" during our 1 year stay in France. We picked up this book at a local "english language library" and it was great! It really gives a lot of good information about the regions, the wineries, and the traveller's perspective on wine country in general. We've also used it extensively to document our pictures after the fact -- you know how you can forget the names of the 20 chateaux and 12 towns you visited! Well, this book provides enough information to put it back together when you are looking at a picture of a very pretty building which you cannot remember the name of.

It doesn't cover particular wines in detail (mentioning only a few), but for wineries, its a great guide.

The Wine Atlas of France by Hubrecht Duijker (with support from Hugh Johnson) is the best way to start exploring the various famous French wine regions by car. After presentation of the history and a description of a particular wine region, the book lists the address and describes the important wine estates of the region. Suggested routes for driving as well as listings of the top regional restaurants and hotels, in order to recover from the wine tasting. Besides excellent maps of different scales to find your way round the book has superb pictures so that you know what to expect. Alternatively, you may first want to use the book to browse through the various wine regions. Even without using the book as a travel guide it is very useful in locating wines and their vineyards.

This books contains informative descriptions, combined with detailed maps, and beautiful pictures, covering all the major wine producing regions of France. In addition, the author includes his favorite vineyards for each region. This book is a must for anyone travelling to France or just interested in learning more about the wine producing regions of France. Included in each section are a few selections on where to eat and where to stay as well. Having personally taken this book on my most recent trip, I can give it my hearty endorsement.

The joys and trials of turning an abandoned piece of Italian real estate into a successful vineyard

Imagine an Italy loving Scot purchasing 18 acres in an unlikely location there and turning this into a vineyard producing fine wine. Fraser documents with great personal feeling the joys and trials he went through to accomplish this feat. His sympathy for Italy, all his Italian collaborators, and even for the Italian bureaucracy, are sensitively described. Not only a very amusing story, but also a textbook on viticulture and wine making.

Colin Fraser, consultant in Rome, buys a derelict property in the hills outside Rome and plants a vineyard that he intends to produce fine wine from. It's Italy, it's easy you say? Except, Fraser is holding down a full-time job, knows little about viticulture, the area he bought his land in is known for terrible wine, it's too high, and the Italian regulations are too thick. That's what makes this story a wine adventure!

I was inspired by Fraser's perseverance in learning through books and meeting with anyone who would talk with him. He educated himself as he proceeded to establish his vineyard and then his winery. The story is filled with wonderful cultural stories that bring texture to the Italian people.

For those with a secret, or not so secret, desire to get away from it all and grow grapes and produce fine wine, this book is for you.

Salute!

I am trying to get in touch with the author David Mitchell to tell him of the response we have had.
