This is an excellent collection of gay short fiction, many from the pre-Stonewall period of obscurity. With the current explosion of GLTB literature, a sequel is in order:)

This anthology offers a cornucopia of gay writers--some notorious and others undiscovered. We are offered different perspectives on the gay experience, and the stories transgress not only time periods, but age groups as well. The writers are gifted in their writing techniques, creating characters that are identifiable yet anomalous. I would recommend this anthology for those who are new to gay literature.

39 Inteligent pieces of litrature - source of pride!

The anthology is an excellent book. The stories were not written exclusively by gay authors, and surprises are waiting for the readers (e.g. Noel Coward's beautiful story). The 39 stories are offered by well-known authors (e.g. Forster, Isherwood), known young authors (Leavitt, Kramer) and by those less known. In so introducing new and promising authors to the readers, Leavitt and Mitchell prove yet again that the distinguished house of Penguin made the right choice in selecting them as editors. RUN TO BUY!

This book contains many pictures. Pictures of the old South Penn Railroad. Then pictures of the construction. And pictures of the turnpike. The bridges, tunnels, and service plazas and different places on the turnpike. These all had character to then, and due to age and modernization, these thing have disappeared or are disappearing really fast, making the turnpike look like any other road. It is sad to see these thing go, but I do realize the turnpike needs to modernize and replace stuff that is worn out, but this book is truely a book to help show future generation what the turnpike did look like when it was built. This will help us show what it really look like then just say it was the first superhighway in America and explain what it look like and have then draw the wrong pictures in there minds.

The BEST PA Turnpike Publication To Date!

Many people know that the PA Turnpike was the United States's first superhighway. For that reason, it carries much historical importance. I have studied the Pa Turnpike, at one time known as "The Worlds Greatest Highway", for many years. I can say without a doubt that this book by Dakelman and Schorr is the best publication to date on the subject. Most of the photos have never been published before. What is nice is that you can take that book and go to those areas today and see what it looked like under construction.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever passed through the blue tollbooths of the Pa. Turnpike, thru the tunnels and over the rolling hills of Pennsylvania.

Building the Pennsylvania Turnpike

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is recognized for being the first modern highways of the 20th century. The initial 160 mile Carlisle to Irwin, Pennsylvania segment laid the groundwork for the present interstate highway system that we have taken for granted. Authors Mitchell Dakelman and Neal Schorr have researched the history of the Turnpike for years. The results of their research and approximately 200 of the thousands of photographs they have collected or taken themselves are included in this work. The book includes the Turnpike's foundations, including the primitive roadways and ill fated South Penn project, from which the Turnpike used as its route, up to the present day expansion and reconstruction projects that will bring this vital highway into the 21st century. All aspects of the construction are documented including right-of-way construction, paving, tunnels and the various bridges used to eliminate grade crossing to make this highway a true express highway. A must for transportation and auto fans, plus fans of the World's Greatest Highway!

I found this book to be more than just a coming of age story. In fact, it was a tale of a young man learning to make decisions on his own in an unfamiliar situation. If found the author's description of what was going through the mind of young Mitchell Moon to be most interesting. Mitch's struggle with his inner romantic and outward alcoholic was most inspirational.

I'm not usually a fan of politics, but I found the authors ideas about a 3 party system to be very interesting. The insight into who a campaign is run was also well written. It's hard to imagine that the part of the book where the campaign staff is handing out fliers could be a page turner but it certainly was for me.

I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who isn't afraid of a little politics and drinking. Not necessarily in that order. Anyone who is familiar with Battle Creek or Chicago would find the author's detailed descriptions entertaining. I sure like reading about bars that I've been to.

I could not put this book down!

The author did an excellent job telling the story that so many of us have lived - finding yourself during that transitional period between college graduation and the beginning of the rest of your life. Mr. Place keeps you turning the pages with his excellent, descriptive story-telling.

I absolutely loved this book. The author did an amazing job of capturing that limbo time in everyone's lives after college but before starting a real job. I loved the development of the characters and the friendships. There were so many parts of the main character, Mitch's, life that will ring true to readers. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an engaging, funny, and soul-searching read.

This book is well put together with beautiful pictures. The pictures are high quality and this book is really a conversation starter! The Playboy book began with pictures of Marilyn Monroe, which I have never seen before and they are beautiful. One thing that was disapointing were some of the stories. The print was so small that you could not read the story, only the captions. Another thing to watch out for is the dust jacket. It's very easy to see any small marks and the gold scratchs off easily. Keep it in a cloth to protect it. I recommend this book to everyone, even if you've never read a Playboy magazine!

Although Playboy is what it is, and because of the reason why many people purchase the magazine, there needs to be an understanding of the true content of the magazine through the years. Remember that the magazine is usually only 20% sex and nude women. That leaves 80% every month to be used for art, technology, controversial editorials, interviews, etc. This tome is huge and heavy, and I'm glad it takes the reader through a tour of 50 years of the COMPLETE world of Playboy. If you only want naked women, don't buy this - buy either "The Playmate Book" or "Blondes", "Brunettes", or "Redheads".

Like most six-year-olds, my son loves peanut butter. He is also interested in historical figures. Therefore this book--though it's intended for older children--was a perfect fit. My son liked hearing about Carver's travels, the way he overcame obstacles, and how, under pressure, Carver found various uses of peanuts. The story of this great man teaches the importance of determination, grace under pressure, industriousness, patience, and creativity. It inspired my son--and me as well!

A goober is the old name for peanuts and A POCKETFUL OF GOOBERS is a biography about George Washington Carver, the scientist who made peanuts famous. To be completely honest, I didn't know much about Carver and therefore found this children's book entertaining, educational, and informative. For instance, I learned that Carver was a gifted artist as well as a scientist and that later in life he became good friends with Henry Ford. The biography is written in a simple style that elementary students will find easy to read and Carver's life is so interesting they should find the book interesting.

i never owned this book, but every week as a child i would go to the public library and my mother would allow me to check out about 3 or 4 books. Each time i went, i begged and pleaded to check out "Pop Corn and Ma Goodness" because despite the silly rhyming scheme, it was my favorite book. Even to this day when I go to the library, i walk upstairs to the kids section to make sure it's still there.

Wide ranging edited volume on the history of political thought
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-18
This is an excellent resource for teachers scheduled to instruct students in the history of political thought; it is a good resource for the students themselves; it is also useful to the general reader who might be interested in exploring the range of political thinking from classical Greek philosophers to more modern (and postmodern) political thinkers (such as Jurgen Habermas, John Rawls, Michel Foucault, and Michael Walzer). Indeed, I have used this as a supplementary textbook in an undergraduate political philosophy course that I once taught.

The volume begins with the Greek thinkers, such as Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle. For good measure, the Roman figure, Cicero, is included. Then, on to the Middle Ages, with exemplars such as St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. Modern Political thought? Machiavelli to Hobbes to Locke to Nietzsche. Then, a section entitled "In Our Times," including Weber, Mosca, Pareto, Orwell, Malcolm X, and those already mentioned earlier.

One subtheme is female political thinkers over time, from Christine de Pizan to Marie-Olympes de Gouges to Emma Goldman to Hannah Arendt.

This is a rich book that provides a sampling of a plentitude of political thinkers over the millennia. A wonderful resource.

I offer the highest reccomendations for students studying politics to read this text.

Where the Great Political Philosophers Dwell
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-07
A very enjoyable book. I especially like the selections on Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Machiavelli. Such selections reflect a theoretical unity, rather than a distance, between the theorists' works. Thus, rather than select excerpts unconnected to other excerpts, the editors attempt to develop chronological theme(s) around the works--when possible--that allow students to see progressions, pauses, and reliances, upon previous political writings. Because of this organized unity--which I think works--I could examine Hobbes' 'state of nature' in light of Locke's, and explore how Locke's theory of man is at least an acknowledgment--if not an extension-of Hobbes' work. Similarly, I could look to the authors of the Federalist papers and explore how such concepts of government were influenced, if only indirectly, by the writings of Hobbes and/or Locke.

In addition to offering a wide representation of the Modern era, the book nicely represents the Classical and Medieval periods, with useful selections from Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, and Augustine. Useful, too, are the selections from _The Prince_ and _Discourses_. Unlike some books which offer selections only from _Prince_, Princeton incorporates _Discourses_, which I think furthers and grounds a deeper understanding of _Prince_.

Thorough and extensive introductions, as well as bold headings within the excerpts, serve as introductions, of course, but also ways to direct the reader to interesting transitions

I would recommend this book for any Poly Theory course, especially one with a focus on classical and modern political thought.

This book offers a key to opening your mind and heart to the infinite possibilities of who you are and who you can be. It's not about searching for God, it's all about experiencing God. The author artfully designs a five-step treasure map for living, which, if followed, will empower the astute reader to live in true happiness, regardless of the ups and downs of daily life.

Spanning from energy psychology to ultimate mystical insight, this treatise is a scientific exposé of the meaning and purpose of human life on earth. If this claim sounds too amazing, read this book, take up its challenges, listen to your heart and follow the treasure map all the way, if you dare. This book is not for the faint hearted, but for the serious and joyful seeker of ultimate freedom and love.

Since I started knowing Psycanics, after a few days I started to know that magic is possible, just like anything else can be possible, and this is a very liberating thought to hold in mind.
I tryed many other things for personal uplifting, with a lot of enthusiasm at the beginning, but with poor or insignificant, or even worst results. Some are The Law of Attraction, Positive Thinking, Toltecs Path, Energetic medicine, all of them have something that is missing. They are telling only one part of the truth...and what about the rest? If something doesn't work, why insisting.
Psycanics W O R K S.
Works like Magic!
Have you ever been in love? What else is important when you are deeply in love? Wouldn't you die for it?
The problem is that love is crazy, it doesn't have any rule! But we are living in a world full of rules...
So Psycanics is here to teach you how to fall in love, with Wisdom!
And most importantly with someone who cannot leave you, and that is yourself?

The concept explained in this book are very simple, and very simply and completely explained, that is an essential basic for a Real World practise, which is really what you want...not just ideas, but provable truth, that you have to prove in your experience, everyday.

I am still learning a lot about it, because it is actually very vast because it can cover and can be applied in many areas. I have known it for nearly 2 years now and it is the first thing I would suggest to someone who needs something. Anyway each soul has to find its own path...

This book explains construction of mind systematically or sceintifically. This is a marvellous book especialy for scientific minded persons. As the current generation is scientific minded, so this book will help them turn to God by adapting Internal Quest(Internal Quest is explained in the book). In my knowledge, this is the best book on spirituality on earth.

This book is a wonderful, and I might add, necessary complement to the Conversations With God Series by Neale Donald Walsch. While the CWG books describe "What Would Love Do Now", this book will give you the tools that will allow you to do it. The spiritual technology that you will be introduced to here will ensure your 'Return to the ONE'. Anyone who resonates with the CWG books will find that the information in this book will propel their own communion with God and your ability to create a spirit-filled life. A great book to consider with this one is: You Are The Creator of Your Life

This book is one of the most clear, careful, and rigorous contemporary psychoanalytic theoretical texts around. Mitchell writes with the logic and incisiveness of an analytic philosopher or logician. Although one might wish his depictions of specific clinical examples were a bit more textured and colorful, the theoretical arguments here are some of the best and most clearly stated around. I hope that more contemporary psychoanalytic theorists will become able to achieve this level of theoretical clarity and rigor.

Stephen Mitchell was one of the original group of analysts who began to differentiate (along with Jay Greenberg) between drive/defense models of the self (e.g., Freud) and relational models. In this book Mitchell applies the relational perspective to several areas of clinical concern, including sexuality, childhood development, narcissism, and theories of change and healing. I recommend this book in the Theories of Depth Psychology graduate courses I teach; it is clear and refreshing and brings analytic thought a new and vitalizing emphasis on image, metaphor, story, and other aspects of the weave of relations we all remain in even when alone.
