Each year Best New Writing by Hopewell Publications reviews the winner, runner up, and notable recipients of the Eric Hoffer Awards. The following is their 2008 review of Spiritual Capitalism: How 9/11 gave us nine spiritual lessons of work and business, winner in the Business category. (Quote used with permission.)

A must read! Every once in awhile you come across a book that you feel you just must share with your friends - this is one of those. It is an easy to read, beautifully written book with guidelines and examples of how business (and life) should be conducted.

A powerfully moving and inspirational book that touched the deepest part of my heart. A book I can read again and again ! This is a great version of the story of The Steadfast Tin Soldier -- always one of my favorite stories as a kid. My son, age 7, loves this book and we read it over and over. The illustrations are excellent and I recommend it. My son found it in his school library but when we went to buy our own copy, it was out of print. So we had to buy it used but it was well worth the effort to have our own copy.

This book tells the classic tale of the one-legged tin soldier who falls in love with a paper ballerina. The soldier suffers a series of misadventures, including being placed at the helm of a doomed paper boat, being chased by a rat, and swallowed by a fish. It's a wonderful tale that will hold older children spellbound. The illustrations are delightful. All told, the book has about 2000 words.

I taught 1st grade for 4 years and all of the teachers in my grade passed this book around at Christmas to read to our class. I cried everytime I read it. It has a wonderful message and my kids in my classroom always loved it! I have now (finally) purchased my own copy of this book to read to my little girl. It is a classic and I know she will love it as much as I do. Every home should have this book to read at Christmastime.

This is a really good book. It has all the characteristic's that made the original a cherished and remembered fairy tale. It is a great gift for any young child, and can be enjoyed by adults too. It maintains the feel of the original tale, but is more like a poem. The art work on each page is beautiful, and the pictures are totally devine. I would recomend buying this for a different and fully enjoyable version of the original.

A little boy had a set of tin soldiers that were made from a melted spoon. One soldier was missing a leg because there was not enough metal left over from the melted spoon.

Tossed aside by the boy, the one-legged soldier sees a paper cut out figure of a ballerina. She is poised on one leg and he feels an instant bond. He has found another one-legged toy and believes this to be love.

The steadfast tin soldier has a series of mishaps. He falls off the window sill into a stream. From there, he is transported to a rat infested sewer. He is swallowed by a fish and through an unlikely stroke of luck, winds up back in the boy's playroom with the other toys and the ballerina.

The ending is what gets to me every single time. A gust of wind lifts the paper ballerina up and she flutters into the fire place, winding up a charred heap of ashes. Devastated, the tin soldier joins her. The remaining metal that was once the tin soldier is a charred piece of heart shaped metal.

I still think this is a very sad story. The photographs really emphasize the feeling this story evokes.

Stickman presents a creative way to teaching with an Urban twist. The author has presented a fun way for your children to explore his/her creative side, while following Stickman on his journey to finding his. The characters are colorful and fun, and the activities are intersting. A lesson is hidden within each activity. What a fun way to learn. I look forward to this author's next book. As do my children!

This activity book isn't your everyday kids coloring and activity book. The images and graphics are amazing. Every home should have one whether you have children or not. We all know at least one child that could use a great book that will stretch them! The author's work is remarkable...

The author of this activity book, Mr. Mitchell, is really in touch with todays youth. This book is refreshingly hip without all the commercialism that we see today. The book engages children on their terms and has interesting and memorable characters. My 9 year old really loved it. I would highly recommend this activity book for both young boys and girls. Hopefully Mr. Mitchell will continue his creative endeavors and delight us with another book!

This is an excellent activities book. The kids will enjoy it, especially during car trips.

I like this story a lot. It is spooky. Whenever I read it I can visualise what is happening. This story has some great events and is one of the best Are You Afraid Of The Dark series books out! You should read it sometime.

I love all Egyptian books like THE TALE OF THE EGYPTIAN MUMMIES. I will also order other books like Bailey School kids, Goosebumps, Baby Sitters Club...

It has great narratives about each recipe, amazing fotos of the area and the food plus the recipes inspire you to creat masterpieces of your own.

I don't usually cook, but I just had to try these recipies. Plus, great pictures and the absolute best anecdotes about Villa d'Este. i went there for my honeymoon and I swear this book just made me want to go there again! Who on earth could resist it...or this fabulous book?

... and women too of course. This charming blend of recipes and witty tales about personalities from the timeless Villa D'Este Hotel lifts risotto to a new high of appreciation. Who would have thought a book about such tiny grains would be an entertaining read? And it beckons you to the kitchen. I admit to enjoying risottos prepared by expert chefs over the years, but never attempting the dish myself. Now I feel confident and keen to give it a go. There are risottos for every season. Of course now that I know so much more, the Arborio rice will no longer do - I must look for the special regional Italian Carnaroli rice if I really wish to impress. The white truffle might prove a bit problematic, but there are plenty of other options.

Travelers and foodies will love this one,recipes for about 50 different kinds of risotto from the famed chef of the Villa d'Este Hotel in Lake Como, Italy. The place is romantic and
even the recipes sound romantic. That sounds impossible, but
it is very true. I recommend this book as a nice holiday
gift this year..

This is a book you may find hard to put down until you reach the last page. But you won't be done with the book once you finish reading it. This thought-provoking book will stay with you, as your mind works to incorporate what you have read into your sense of reality. Each personality is definitely unique from the others. Each message displays qualities in the ideas expressed, and in the manner of expressing those ideas, that ring true to that individual. If you are thinking about buying this book, do it. It is well-written, an "easy" read. The messages are simple--yet it is the simple truth that often seems to trip us--an eternal path to find the simple truth.

I bought this for my son who was turning 2. He's not real interested in books, but I thought this touch and feel type might peak his interest. I'm trying everything I can think of to get him interested in being read to. He does like it, although I wish I'd bought it for him sooner.

This is one of the books in my daycare they want me to read over and over again. Mom feels soft, but grandma is softer, since it's a touch and feel book also. It's a sweet book, little ones never tire of. Great for any library or birthday present for babies as well as toddlers. Their faces light up they love it and so do I!

My 9 month old loves this book. I have been reading to her since she was born. This has been her favorite book and still is. We read it at least once a day. The second I start reading she smiles and gets so excited.

This story is good for young children who have short attention spans. Each page is interactive in that the children have something to touch. My little boy, who is 16 monthes old, enjoys it.

My 6-month old son loves this book! He gets so excited for me to turn the page so he can touch the next bear. I am buying it for my friends also and I'm looking for some other touch & feel books to buy.

After 28 years in one single trade I think it legitimate to say that I am experienced. It is also right to be convinced that it would be the reason enough for success.

After studying the “The 2000 Percent Solution Workbook” I can say it does not suffice to be experienced and hard working to attain success. I needed a modern and methodic approach to get 20 times more out of my business. I am thrilled at the change in my approach to daily business problems after reading this book. For my personal situation I call it my stealth weapon.

I have read a few books on methods of constant improvements for sustainable solutions. I had read The 2000 Percent Solution before the work book, too. I thought that book contained very down-to-earth, honest advice on how to improve things in my business.

The workbook brings about the final cut to the diamond. If I had read it without a proper coaching, I would have missed out a disciplined application of the ideas of the authors and probably considered it as any other book. Coaching was like navigating with a compass in the ocean; imagine going sailing without it.

The size of the business was not important -- it was the approach that made the difference. But the workbook has given me very straight forward eight steps to go through and see how things improve while going through them. It particularly inculcates a new habit of asking different questions to get better solutions to problems which probably every one of us faces in business life. I have taken the course described in the workbook and found it very effective.

I confess that I approach most books with a healthy scepticism and ask myself, “What is the new mantra that this book will teach me now?” Subsequently I do begin with a tendency to look down on it with a slight rejection. As soon as I finished the first two chapters and applied the logic of this book in my business experience, I lost all scepticism and could see what is it that holds back the real success despite all the hard work.

There are very concrete examples in this book which I have applied to my business and achieved 20 times the result such as the example of a chip maker who outsourced the designing work and gained exponential advantage, because the chip designers were specialists. I have applied this method to quality control in my business. I have outsourced work to specialists and the results are very impressive. The economic advantage of this change was amazing; the outcome was that first it brought down the rejection rate to unbelievably low level. This saved my company the money that it would have lost on bad quality and the customer was delighted. The second advantage was that I did not have to worry about my own personnel getting complacent with the manufacturers or doing innocent favors of accepting small errors as a gesture of creating good personal relationships. I did not think of these methods before and have learned them from this book. I also found another question most impressive in the book. If my answer to my customer is the best answer that I can not afford to give to my customer . . . then I have to look for a better one.

The 2,000 percent solutions are available for just about any activity.The solutions improve efficiecy and effectiveness of an organization.The 2,000% solution workbook can be applied to reduce costs or increase profits by more than 20 times the current annual rate. Actually, the 2,000% solution workbook is a business mannual. I have applied the mannual on how to
help young people avoid contracting AIDS
through improving understanding of how sexual
practices can affect exposure to infection. The mannual helped make an enormous difference by spreading the word about how to stop AIDS faster than the disease itself is spread among the vulnerable and relatively uninformed young population.

Authors Donald Mitchell and Carol Coles have co-authored a number of interesting books. The 2000 Percent Solution (with Robert Metz), The Irresistible Growth Enterprise and The Ultimate Competitive Advantage.

These books represent new horizons for business models and also getting the most out of organisational change strategies. I particularly enjoyed reading the 2000 Percent Solution and it is the text for my current study course I am undertaking. In order to assist the student/planner two of the authors have completed the 2000 Percent Work Book to supplement the original text.This is a valuable resource tool for those who wish to pursue the original applications of the 2000 Percent Solution further.

The book is extremely well written and easy to follow. It assists the reader to work through the eight-step process to a 2000 Percent Solution. This book was the result of feed back received from a number of prominent business leaders and Professor Peter Drucker, well known management theorist.

The work book assists the reader to first identify stalls and that inhibit thinking and achievement. It contains a number of new 'stalls' that have resulted from suggestions from leading professionals. Recommended reading is also contained at the website: [...]

Chapter One examines what solution models can be applied towards a 2000 Percent Solution, a number of questions are posed, with a brief outline to assist the reader. Chapter Two deals with more of these 'insidious' stalls that block people's ideas and inhibit creativity and advancement within the organisation. After completion of looking at what opportunities there are that help with performance, there is the actual consideration of how long it will take to implement a 2000 Percent Solution.

Chapters Five to Twelve look at the eight-step process; please note, this is designed to help you arrive at your solution, not to find one. The questions posed in each of these eight steps assist the reader to look into all corners of each step, rather than looking straight ahead to the next step. Often, there can be a tendency to steer straight ahead and forget the in-depth detail.

The final two chapters deal concentrate on some very useful advice on getting the message across to those people you need to involve in this procedure for it to be accepted. The 2000 Percent Solution workbook is an invaluable aid to assisting the student and business professional alike.

I have read Don Mitchell's 2000% Workbook and I found it very practical and user friendly. In this book Don becomes your coach along the way to exponential growth. I read it after the 2000% Solution book and it vastly improved my ability to conceptualise ways of improving my dental practice. I fully recommend the book to any enterprising entrepeneur. It will walk you through the process in an exciting way. One of my major frustrations with authors is that they are too theoretical but I find Don Mitchell in this workbook refreshingly practical. I walked out of reading the book straight into applying the concepts. My business has never been the same. Thank you Dr Mitchell for showing us the way.

love the format. listed alphabetically, the items are presented in a easy to read format. Just about all I want to know about the problem when working in a busy office. I can read more later but this gets the job done. an excellent 90's type of book. where is the CD?

As a pediatric nurse,I really love this book!! Many times, quick reference books are not thorough enough. This one is. I've used it many times as a teaching tool with parents.

The 5-minute pediatric consult is written in an easy to read outline format. The writers have eliminated unnecesary obscure data and offer a concise outline of all major pediatric diseases. The topics are designed to be read in 5 minutes or less and all the up to date information to diagnose and treat a specific illness is included. The topics are alphabetized, so they are easy to look up. The writers are accomplised experts in their fields and the book has been edited by the distinguished Dr. Schwartz, at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. As a professor of Pediatrics, I highly recommend this book to practicing pediatricians, family practitioners, nurses and students.

I took this paper for my Ph.D. major-Exponential Business Success, under the kind guidence of my Guru-Dr. Don Mitchell. We could learn the techniques of achieving the progress of 400 years in a 20 years span. I would like to say that these revelations from God to my Guru-Don Mitchell-the messenger of God are Nth century generation progress in 21st century only. I find new skills learned from the books "The 2000 percent solutions" "Breakthrough Business Growth II" and "The ultimate Competitive Advantage, "The 2000 percent squared solution by my Guru-Professor Donald Mitchell and Carol Coles; form the foundation for the effective and overall control of life and to achieve the exponential business success of our organization.

This is not only an explication of Don Mitchell's 2,000 percent solution for the world, but a carefully programmed series of lessons of awareness and innnovation application. Like his other books, this is clearly articulated with excellent examples to illustrate his points. I am especially fond of his chapter on teaching via the master-craftsman model and what needs to be the foundation of good teaching (as in, ask what they want and need to know, answer their questions, then support them with relevant, evocative, and sensory examples).

How he astutely ties together Impressionists, Jackson Pollock, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Guinness Book of Records, and his law degree at Harvard to support his contentions is fascinatng. With respect to the Guinness Book of "trivial and valueless facts" - what if the book featured "valuable facts," like "the best practices of nonprofit organizations." Now wouldn't that be incredibly useful and efficient resource and solution. As a result of his law education, he discovered there can be "many different potential 2,000 percent solutions within the same opportunity." Interpretation is everything, providing an incredible array of applications, implications, and solutions.

This book is eye-opening and beautifully written, making it hard to put down. Anyone who reads it cannot hope to escape without being inspired to conjure up "what ifs" about how she/he could help locally or globally to apply a 2,000 percent solution to improve life. Bravo!!
