A true and exciting account of bailout over France, WW II

Lt. Col Jim Armstrong and I have been friends since first grade. He and I were both pilots in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and while he saw much action,I remained in the States as a flight instructor. He recorded his adventures after much urging from many people, including my wife and myself. The impact must have been enormous. A strange country, a strange language, the constant danger of discovery by the Germans....and finding the underground, getting their help, and actually being secretly returned to duty in England...what an adventure. The book is well written, the bailout and survival are presented in detail, with illustrations carefully saved by the author. A valuable record, truthful, and very interesting to both the old timers and the current generation.

This book made quite an impression on me when I was a child. It is well written (for the genre) and introduces what (for me at the time... mid-60's) were new concepts: cybernetic supermen, alternate worlds, universal (but defeatable) evil. Not great literature, but entertaining and a fast read.

Thanks to Amazon for enabling me to replace my original copy.

Joanne Brasil's novel tells the story of the author's move from the south to Boston and her bittersweet relationship with a talented Brazilian music student. The musician is presumably based at least in part on the author's late husband, Victor Brasil (the composer of "Creek" aka "Arroyo", recorded by Airto Moreira, and other popular Brazilian jazz pieces), to whom the novel is dedicated.

The narrator, a young white woman, tries to understand the different facets of racism and segregation in the novel's three settings: her home in the south, Boston, and Brazil. The writing is plain and direct; the narrator's voice is almost childlike and naive, but the story accumulates weight through her insights, and the book is moving without being overly dramatic. Did she write another novel, or any published stories?

One naive American woman, (Kristin) one adveture-seeking person, (Zach) one embarrassed Prince, (Jascha of Cabriz) and one over protective father. Too many people in this equation when you consider the country Kristin is in is in turmoil. I like the fact that both Kristin and Zach were able to escape from the Palace twice, the second time by helicopter. I have to applaud Kristin's character for finally standing up to her over protective father after he dug into Zach's background and moving out of the house to write a book on her experiences in Cabriz. Zach finally learned to open up and Kristin's father finally learned that his daughter had a life and to accept Zach as is.

"We have to escape or die," Zach told her.

Suddenly Tamara's holiday in the Caribbean had turned into a nightmare. On a guided tour of a rain forest she had been captured by guerrillas! Only through the strength and comfort of fellow hostage Zach Fletcher did she survive the ordeal.

Not so easy to overcome were the passions and emotions Zach had imprinted on her heart and memory.

Then Zach disappeared from her life - a ruthless departure that left Tamara despondent, wondering if she could survive alone...

Napoleon's 11 month exile on this island.

Review Date: 2005-06-26
This book shows a unique side of Napoleon that other biographers rarely mention. Here is the man who ruled France for 12 years, prepared to live the life of an exile until the Congress Allies defy the treaty they made with him. First, the Austrians take away his wife and child. Then the Bourbons (they learned nothing and forgot nothing) don't bother to pay the pension promised. It also shows the the qualities of Metternich and Tallyrand, and there treacherous qualities in statemanship. These were the men who made Europe after the Congress. The story revolves around how Napoleon first adapted to life on the island, and then as the Allies thought about rethinking their position toward him and Murat, changed it to make a comeback in France. The final four chapters deal with his march on Paris and his reinstallation on the throne. A great story.
This is a good book in that it talks about a little known chapter of his life. The book starts off rather slow, but the chapters are stirring toward the middle and end.

This is an intense, historical war drama, very well written. V.A.Stewart captures the tremendous hardship these regional conflicts impose on civilians and military alike. While not being overly graphic the reader is immersed on the battle field and is left to marvel at how he writer could recreate the past so vividly.
