The Fortson Grove Youth Book Club just started with children ranging in age from 7-17, and Escape from the Slave Trader is the second book we've reviewed. They all agreed that this is an excellent book and it really held the attention of our young readers.

You'll have a better idea of slavery in the 1800s.

The style and pace of this book is a excellent for the growing reader, perhaps middle school and down. The Arabs were no friends to Africans.

I found this book fascinating. The first story especially so both for the fun of exploring new places and the insights it gives into the character of the narrator -- useful in view of the other stories which are sensitive and, often, very witty By all means read this book. Very few memoirs cover this much territory, anyone can have adventures, it's finding and conveying the connections within them that make this book interesting.

A great escape!

So glad I discovered this book of short stories by Redjeb Jordania. It made my cross-country airplane trip a pleasant experience. Stories include a bit of history, fantasy and memoirs, all wonderfully descriptive. A great escape! Hope he writes more.

Ingenious girl survives in an incredible story

I had to put this book down to check to see what others'responses to it were, even before I am finished. I wanted to see others' enthusiastic responses. I am amazed to see that no one has written a review of it before. For academic reasons I have been reading quite a few books on the Holocaust this month. This is an astonishing book of a resilient, inventive child/young woman who survives against incredible odds....yes, this sounds like a pat review....but her story is so unique. Although it was in the young adult section it is well, and intelligently written. This should certainly be made into a movie. Astonishing....must go finish.

This story is beyond amazing. No one could have made up such a story with more twists and turns than a roller coaster, although this was a deadly roller coaster. The author should create an audio version of this story so that we could hear her voice. The truth of her history is ultimately illuminating of Germany and Poland during WWII. Her exceptional skills at survival, and storytelling rival any I have heard of before. Sonia Games you are a most amazing woman! Told in a first person account this story recounts the author growing up in a comfortable, even well-off family in Poland, of her survival in Jewish ghetto's and then in the streets and railways of Poland, and even Germany, as war rages on. A superhero of survivalists! This is a VERY IMPORTANT BOOK!

If you want a psychological thriller that will keep you guessing up until the very last page, if you like books that don't hold back on anything, and if you enjoy characterization that exists chiefly through dialogue that's spotlessly real and not melodramatic, this is the book for you.

It involves a black snake, a young boy who must escape his hellish aunt's existence the wrong way, and a huge cast of other characters that make this book read like an Italian true-crime drama. You will swear you've heard of this sort of thing before in real life, but be unable to pinpoint it.

And at the same time, the depth of the characterizations and their unique natures, well drawn and aptly portrayed as the book reaches its hideous climax--climaxes, in fact--will, well, keep you on the edge of your curling toes. Sheesh, you'll be there! A great Show, not Tell book.

The Hilarity Continues!

This is the third book in the series about two brothers and their amazing pet plants. I read it to my two boys (ages 6 and 8 at the time) who enjoyed the book just as much as the first two. Even I had to stop reading now and then to give myself a chance to stop laughing! Ms. McArthur does an excellent job of expanding the story to keep it interesting. Dr. Sparks the plant botanist who appeared in book 2 is back again in this installment, and suddenly there are a lot more than 2 plants involved in the story! But Stanley and Fluffy remain in the center spotlight (as I'm sure all the fans of the series would want) and continue to develop new abilities and personality traits.

The fantastic story of the underground escape lines in Nazi-occupied Europe, and of Room 900, London, the secret office from which they were run. This organization maintained a network of escape routes across occupied Europe for Allied prison camp escapees and downed airmen. A story of heroes and traitors; of hairbreadth escapes, betrayal, torture, death...and the indomitable courage that saved over 2000 British and over 3000 American soldiers and airmen.
Airey Neave, one of the men who ran Room 900, has faithfully recorded the tension and excitement, the sorrow and elation, the victories and defeats these remarkable people endured. He also describes the famous escape routes like the O'Leary and Comet Lines and the men and women who ran them. Neave escaped drom the maximum security Colditz Castle to become "Saturday" of M.I.9. and, with "Sunday," organize the various underground escape routes across France, Belgium and Holland. He holds the Military Cross and is a Member of Parliament.

This is the same book as the later revision called "Saturday at M.I.9", with the exception of minor changes like the preface. Escape Room has pictures and maps unlike "Saturday", but Saturday has a section on what happened to traitors. See my review of that book for more information.

The Book that Changed My Life

I chose this book because the cover was as black and smooth as my mood, hoping it would be a diversion from the freakish post traumatic stress I was experiencing after a back country mishap. People who climb and push their physical limits with minimum risk in high risk situations are the luckiest people in the world in my mind. This most beautiful book brought me back to the life I love from a very scary place of fear where my internal self mimicked the grey cold climate, sinking darkness of winter in sedentary depression. It cracked me wide open and helped me think, live and breathe the essence of what adventure really is. I love to read it out loud. I love to give it as a gift. This beautifully written book, I will keep for the rest of my life. Roberts is brilliant and the book reminds us to seek and treasure our own brilliance.

Top Notch Adventures, Top Notch Writing

They don't come any better than Dave Roberts. His writing is crisp, clean, a little sardonic at times, and hard-edged. Roberts originally made a name for himself as a top flight rock climber. As a writer, he is equally skilled. He knows what it's like to risk his life for something he wants, but has enough perspective on himself to question his motives. What I like most about Roberts however, is that he has never stopped growing. Read "Moments of Doubt" and you'll get an inside look at the all consuming nature of rock climbing. Read "Rambling Through the Winds," and you'll learn how the personality quirks of llamas can endanger your life on the trail. Almost anything is fair game for Robert's pen, including old explorers who faked their accomplishments (see the book, "Great Exploration Hoaxes). Escape Routes is an eclectic mix of vintage Roberts. You'll find hair raising rock climbing, descents into caves, a discourse on Outward Bound, and yes the cantankerous llamas. If you really love good adventure writing then this is a must.

This book is really awesome, although I am not planning to be marrying anytime soon, being 12 years old. It's easy to follow and, from what I hear, can make the best of your inexpensive (yay!) wedding...if that's what you're looking for, I'd just make sure it's with the right person. Make it a good one!

Practical Guide for Do-it-Yourself Wedding

As a seamstress, who has been commissioned for several weddings, I really appreciated the sound advice given in this easy to read manual. The overall structure of the content is not only informative but continues to be up-to-date even after nine years in publication. The pictures are timeless and the information is adaptable to all tastes and styles. If you are looking for tips to save money on a do-it-yourself wedding, this small book is a fine place to begin. It covers everything from renting or sewing to purchasing wedding attire. Flowers and food and personal attention are all addressed in such a way that the advice will still be apropos for years to come. This book is a great alternative for a wedding consultant, much less expensive, and well worth the price.

If you know Acton, you will appreciate this book. If you don't know Acton you will appreciate this book, however, you won't "hear" his voice when you read it (which could be a positive or a negative! ha ha - just hadta Acton!) Very "user-friendly" - you are able to apply what you learn and put it into practice immediately. Highly recommended! FIVE STARS*****!!!!

You will also want to purchase the latest, "One-Minute Bible for Students," for which Acton also contributed material.
