I liked this book because it takes place in the ocean and it's a cartoon. My favorite part is when the shark eats the teacher . It was fun to read. If you read this book you'll love it.

This story is about a shark named Sammy who was excited to go to the first day of school. When he gets excited he bites things. When he gets to school he has so much fun and learns not to bite his friends and teacher.

So disappointed this went out of print already!

I read this book to students at the beginning of the school year for a number of years. Kids are inundated during the first few days of school with "do this"/"don't do that" new rules and procedures. They absolutely LOVED laughing at the frivolity of the rule "Don't eat the teacher"--at last, a rule they could probably abide by. Plus they were quite taken with the book's apparent bite out of the corner of the cover. Unfortunately they liked it enough that I've had 3 copies that somehow never quite got returned to the media center. I'm hunting for a new copy & now that it's not as easy to get, I might have to keep this one in my secret stash of "librarian" books--it's just too good a read aloud to keep losing.

Don't Eat the Teacher! By: Nick Ward

Sammy is an energetic little shark and he is ready to go to school! But when he gets too excited he tends to bite things (as all little sharks do). CRUNCH! First it was his breakfast table. He really didn't mean to nibble on his friends, and he REALLY didn't mean to ruin story time and painting... All day Sammy keeps eating things he doesn't quite intend to... can he get through the rest of the day without biting off more than he can chew?

Don't Eat the Teacher! is a fun way of remembering the first day of school. I think that kids of younger ages will love this book and be just as excited as our main character, Sammy. I would definitely recommend this book to any parent because it will probably change your children's attitude toward school. Instead of being afraid of school, they will be more confident.
I would give it five stars, because it had fantastic detail and excellent word choice. Nick Ward is a great illustrator; his pictures really make the ocean floor's characters come to life; this makes it enjoyable for any age!
You will not be disappointed as soon as you pick up this book.

Cross-country road trip to healing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-10
Tori Lou and her dad Bill Vancil were able to take a serious diagnosis of Bill's prostate cancer and mount a fight, including using a new technology not available nationwide. (Proton radiation therapy.)

Their fight included an amazing cross country trip, chronicled in this book and it reads like an adventure tale while giving some hope and some vital information to prostate cancer sufferers.

Prostate cancer is relatively common, yet slower growing than some cancers, especially in older men. There are a variety of screens for this cancer, and some innovative treatments. But even though there is much hope, the journey to healing is always an uphill fight, and the Vancils tell a dramatic story. Vancil, as a seasoned broadcaster and owner of radio stations, knows how to tell a good story with drama, humor and horror, too. This is a very "feeling" book with something that may resonate with you or someone you know. Recommended reading for human interest and definitely for cancer patients.

A double odyssey

This interesting work features two odysseys. One, a cross-country trip by the author, Bill Vancil, from Madison, WI to Loma Linda, CA, to seek treatment for prostate cancer, using proton radiation therapy through Loma Linda University Center. Two, a long trip back home to Madison with his young daughter, who had flown out to join him after the start of his therapy.

One issue that piqued my interest in this volume: the author is from my home town in Illinois. He worked in Peoria and the Quad Cities, and many of the little details from his earlier life resonate with me, because of similar experiences.

The first odyssey features his efforts to determine the best way to fight his cancer. This included a tussle with his insurance company, which was loathe to pay for "experimental" therapy. It details the surgery demanded by the insurance company as it considered whether or not to pay for some/all of his treatment. It provides detail on the proton therapy, with enough information about the mechanics of the process to enlighten the reader. Here, too, his book is an advertisement for tests for prostate cancer and, in that sense, does a valuable service.

The second odyssey, as noted above, is the time in California with his daughter and their trip back to Madison. Kind of a nice relationship is detailed between father and daughter. She improved her skateboarding, learned to surf, developed a friendship with Sebastian (a "big dog," although the term big dog is used several different ways in this book), and became friends with other kids. Then, when his treatment was completed, father and daughter drove up the coast, through Big Sur. Then (following a trip I once took) Interstate 80 to the Midwest. They stayed each night at places such as Reno, Wendover (Utah), Cheyenne, and Lincoln (Nebraska). Finally, Madison.

This is an unpretentious book, telling a simple story. But a story that works at two levels of odyssey. . . .

An easy read with a powerful message

It's not often that you find a person who turns a negative into a positive, and in more ways than one. That's what Bill Vancil did and that's one of the things that makes this book so appealing.

Many people confronting a potentially fatal medical problem would be inclined to ask "Why me?" But, not Bill Vancil. Faced with prostate cancer, he immediately researched potential cures for his condition. Not only did he succeed in conquering the cancer through a little known solution - proton radiation therapy - but Bill rediscovered his own humanity and spirituality in the process.

Don't Fear the Big Dogs is a meaningful and educational book everyone should read; it examines the second highest cancer related man-killer that men need to know about. It also is a moving story of bonding between a 63-year-old father and his 13-year-old daughter. Tori Lou's inspiration is apparent in the spirit of the author's description of their adventure together.

During six weeks in California and the trip home to Wisconsin, Bill and Tori Lou marveled at the world around them and discovered the world within them. The remarkable bonding of an older dad and a teenager ascending into adolescence is the soul of the book. At the heart of the book is an important message to men and their families facing the challenge of prostate cancer. By reading and re-reading Bill's inspiring story I am moved to conclude there are no coincidences.

Don't Fear The Big Dogs is the very personal story of executive vice-president and part-owner of five radio stations Bill Vancil, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2004. His determination to overcome the attack on his body marks this remarkable, can-do memoir, which also informs the reader of a scientifically advanced option to treat prostate cancer - a procedure called proton radiation therapy, offered at only a few places in America. Told in plain terms, Don't Fear The Big Dogs is filled cover to cover with personal inspiration, drive, and dedication.

"Don't Forget to Write" was a great book. It really shows that home is where the heart is. Rosie is sent off to stay with her Auny Mabel and Grandad on their farm for a few days. She is really upset about going, and does not want to at all. Once she gets there, all she thinks about is coming home, but of couse she couldn't.
While "Old Ginger Nut" was on the farm, she spends a lot of time helping out her aunt and grandad with the chores. Some of them were collecting eggs and selling sheep at the market. Although Rosie doesn't like being away from home at first, she eventually warms up to the idea. She gets used to being away from home, but still wants to go back. This is a great story. It's perfect for kids who are going away with out their parents for a while for their first time. No matter where you go, home is where the heart is.

Wonderful book for an avid 5 year old reader.

My almost 6 year old daughter fell in love with this book after reading it in the waiting room of a doctor's office. It is a delightful book that takes you on a the journey of a little girl that visits her grandads farm, at first reluctantly, then as she experiences the fun that a farm and country-life has to offer, she warms up to the idea of being away from home. The story is told via letters that are written to the little girl's mother, ala "Don't Forget to Write". We donated a copy to our elementary schools media center (however, I have yet to receive it) and our media center specialists (librarian) also loved it.

I cannot believe how difficult it is to get this book. I think the book distributors have missed the boat on this one. Start promoting and marketing this book and I guarantee, you'll have a best-seller on your hands. Thank you Martina Selway for your creativity in writing this delightful book!

The book Don't Get Caught In The Girls Locker Room, is a fiction book. The setting takes place in a school and inside classrooms. The main characters are Kyle, Dusty, and Wilson. Kyle is a kind of guy who is the nice guy, and if there is something he does not like he tries to act like it is not real. Dusty is a whole different person, he is like the kind of guy that gets into trouble and can talk his way out of anything. Wilson is the guy who invents stuff for the whole "crew" and does crazy stunts with everyone else.
If you are wondering what the book is mainly about let me tell you. Wilson, Dusty, and Kyle get into a lot of trouble. There is a master key and they want it, because there is a kissing book in the girl's locker room. They want to read it! The problem begins when the key is taken.
I love this book because it is almost like a mystery, because you have to find out who took the key and deal with the problems that all three boys have. I also love the book because it something that usual people do not write about. (Would you write about a kissing book? I didn't think so.) And well that is why I love this book. I think if you like a little mystery with a little humor then I think you would love this book as much as I do.

This book is about three boys named Kyle,Dusty and Wilson who attend a school called Hard Marks Middle School.Kyle, Dusty and Wilson are three best friends who find out that there is a book called "The Kissing Book" in the girls' locker room. They want one of their friends, Melody to go into the girls locker room and get the locker number and the locker combination. One afternoon, the three boys go into the girls' locker room, they find the right locker, unlock the locker and go through the book to find out what is in the book. Ricky Cheech was the student that had the master key to the girls' locker room and opened to locker, took the kissing book and wrote good things about himself in the kissing book. Anyway, I'm not going to give you that much information about the book. Read the book for yourself!

I thought this book was great. At first I thought this book was going to be boring but after 30 minutes I couldn't stop reading it.The plot of this story was simple, a boy had to take a book from the girls locker room without getting caught.

The setting is in a school, afterschool in the present and inisde the girls locker room.Their were alot of characters like Kyle,Dusty,Wilson, and their Principal [AKA Monkey Breath.] My favorite one is Kyle because he is a nice guy that no one ever suspects would get into trouble.

I would recommend this book to the kids that are between 10 to 13 year olds, especially boys because they always wonder what goes inside the girl's locker room.

Cynthia's book hits every topic in consumerism. I remember reading her enlightening stories in the newspaper when I delivered the afternoon newspaper as a youngster. Over the years, she has received the support of Government and Business everywhere and helped shape a more honest society. But today, there are new thieves. This book will help you to become better aware of these problems. Identity Theft has become a major problem, costing Americans billions of dollars each year. Visit www DearGeorge org

Planning for Abundance and a Happy Retirement

Review Date: 2008-07-11
At first glance this book seems like simple fiction with life lesson material that many are already familiar with: conservative spending while planning your nest egg, setting realistic goals and planning ways to reach them. The story, however, is surprisingly powerful in an understated and subtle way. In fact the strength of it sneaked up on me as I moved through the book.

At a time in my own life when I was working through a major life change, I found this book to be a terrific asset to my ability to be resourceful and focused. In fact, after I finished reading it one evening in bed, I got up and began writing down ideas to implement the author's principles and ended up working out issues and writing plans far into the night.

This is a great book to help readers become involved in manifesting a life path that more accurately reflects the desires of the heart, and offers practical suggestions to get moving in that direction.

At the same time it reminds readers to make allowances for the future by not only living within our means, but by savoring the fruits of our accomplishments (the marshmallow) in nibbles, rather than gobbling the entire fruit at one sitting.

For a society filled with entrepreneurs who have no focus, employees who hate their jobs and consumers with over-extended credit lines, this is a book that brings common sense and heart back into the mix of making a living while leading a meaningful life.

I wouldn't have thought that I would be able to say that but I can. Don't gobble the Marshmallow...ever! managed to build on the message in the first book and deal with the all important area of failing to keep up with change and falling back to bad habits.

Joachim de Posada and Ellen Singer managed to deal with this almost never dealt with area and managed to once again package their message into a very readable book. Well done!

In this easy to read book, Joachim de Posada and his co-writer bring us the continuation to Don't eat the Marshmallow Yet. This book stands alone even if you haven't read the first one. The Marshmallow Principle that is the basis for both books is one of the most important lessons for anyone who wants to build wealth throughout their lifetime. It provides you steps that you can take to identify need from want and help you build a future in which your needs and wants can be taken care of. Read it and you will be on the road to your future success, pass it up, and you will continue to live your wants until your needs cannot be taken care of.

This book is really well written, both voices (the mom- and dad-to-be). As a man, I think the guy stuff is very funny. I think this book deserves to be read, since I didn't know of anything like this -- certainly nothing written for the man's perspective -- when my wife (and I) were going through pregnancy.

The design is very pleasing. I think the compact size and round corners give it a handbook feel -- I can picture putting it into a bag much easier this way. The illustrations are fun, unique, and complement the layout really well. Good typography... all of which sets a soothing tone.

Christian nation you say?

Review Date: 2005-01-23
Actually a book that emphasizes an unfortunately rarely heard word, "forgiveness". As difficult as it may be, perhaps that is the ideal this civilized, advanced and cultured society ought to strive for. It's too bad there are too few actual Christians left in the world who take a message and actually attempt to alter the way they do things. With the media and society the way they are, people tend to emphasize paranoia and hatred when it comes to crimes, with almost no emphasis on compassion and forgiveness. Although forgiving is difficult, that forgiveness is not even held up as the ideal ought to make one question people's real motives and dispositions. People seek the infliction of pain or death in the name of compassion for the victims, and somehow they pretend they are noble and serving justice. The families one hears from in this book have not only suffered immensely, but have also done something more profound and difficult than most could imagine. This book is a difficult read because of the subject matter, but many people could learn from it. It is quite beyond me how the people in this book are not held up as ethical models for the rest of us, people who really believe in a principle everyone supposedly also believes (except when it's not convenient, then we like bloody vengeance).

"But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone hits you on the cheek, offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don't hold back your shirt either." "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that." But I guess this just never applies. So much for the 'advanced morality' and 'Christian ethic' so many talk about today.

As someone who has had mixed feelings about the death pentalty, this book opened my eyes and my mind. It accounts truly amazing, stories of personal strength and forgiveness that are beyond comprehension to those of us who haven't been in their shoes, but should consider the possibility. I was enlighted that there are after all, human beings that are capable of reaching such an extraordinary level of compassion in the wake of such personal tragedy.

This wonderful book brings hope to an American Society that has been becoming more violent. The title "Don't Kill in Our Names" speaks to the problem we all face when the government carries out capital punishment in our names when many of us are opposed to capital punishment in our civilized society. More specifically, this book addresses the wishes of murder victims own family members who see the folly in wanting retribution(revenge). Some family members achieve better mental health and healing by searching for forgiveness and reaching out to the perpetrators rather than seeking retribution as the only answer.

This book will open your eyes and your mind with stories of personal strength and forgiveness. This book is a powerful statement against the death penalty as we meet some murder victims' families who believe it continues the cycle of killing to no one's betterment.

A provocative engaging novel

As someone who does applied research
science and engineering, I didn't think
that the death penalty would have much interest
to me. However, I couldn't put this book
down once I started. I finished it after
a ~5 hour reading marathon.

King's book touches on another world that I have
little contact with. I was a bit overwhelmed with
the frank discussion of the violent murders followed
by the saintly behavior of some of the families,
including Gus & Audrey Lamm, Linda & Ami White,
and Azim Khamisa. The healing aspect of forgiveness
has an important message for our personal lives
as well as the debate at the national political
and foreign policy levels.

My six year old and 11 year old fact nuts sat spellbound for an hour and a half as I read this book with them, and it kept my interest as well.

The fun but factual text is interspersed with cute cartoons that my six year old enjoyed, and which helped fix certain ideas in all of our memories.

The only drawback...they wouldn't let me stop reading it!

I can't wait to try out Don't Know Much About Geography.
