for making this book so hard to find. It was a great read, funny, thoughtful, and unique, and yet, it has disappeared from my library and is unavailable in my local bookstore. All I want is to re-read the story, and can I do this? Can I re-read Susan's realistic dealings with snobs and A-boys and losers (who just might not be)? Can I once again feel the pain and terror and sadness involved with having a sister like Ashley, burned out and destructive and volatile? Can I indulge again in the great romantic scene between Susan and *cough* the guy who she has a romance with? NO, I can't, because some stupid publisher decided to stop printing this excellent book and now it is impossible to get ahold of. As sad as this may be for me, however, it is sadder for those who have never had the chance to read the book at all. Make More Copies!!!!

An Enjoyable Read

A Review by Carrie

Seventeen year-old Susan Hall is excited about her senior year in high school. She is the music editor for the schools yearbook. Susan has the biggest crush on a boy names Anthony, but she has some competition with the chief editor of the yearbook, Shepherd. When everything is going fine for Susan an unsuspected visit from her twenty-five year-old sister, Ashley, turns everything upside-down. Ashley holds a grudge against the family because she was going to be a famous rock star, but everything went wrong and she failed at success. Susan came up with a great idea for the yearbook so she has to ask her scary classmate Whit for help. When Susan starts to talk to Whit she realizes he is not a bad guy at all, and she develops a crush on him. Things at home are not going good for Susan though, Ashley keeps ruining things, and she even tries to kill Susan.

I like how the story has a twist at the end. It is a very happy ending too. Everything leads up to the climax perfectly. It is a very fast read. Even if you don't have a psychotic sister you can find something to relate to in the story. Like trying to make things better in your family or trying to impress a guy at school, you can somehow relate.

I recommend this book to mostly girl teenagers that like to read about the everyday feelings that we encounter. Also I recommend this book to people that like to read about family issues and people that like happy endings.

Coming of age in a dysfunctional family

This is one of the best "social commentary" books I have ever read. I have wanted to use it with my 8th graders for several years, but it has never been available at an affordable price. The book deals with coming of age, consequences of decisions, family dysfunction, and family loyalty. Readers will sympathize with the protagonist who must deal with her rebellious older sibling coming home and stealing the family attention, albeit in a negative way. This book will also connect with any young adult who has tried to be the "family hero," but resents the attention that more "flambuoyant" family members receive. This is an example of Carolyn Cooney's early quality writing before she became caught up in the "R.L. Stine syndrome."

This book was really great!

I enjoy almost all of Caroline B. Conney's work, and I must say, this book was one of her best. It is written in the first person by a girl who's older sister returns home on her 25th birthday. Her sister creates a crisis in the family by controling her parent with crazy antics. While the narrorator is having a great emotional struggle at home, she is trying to sort out feelings for two different guys at school. This story has a great ending. I definately recommend this book as well as the rest of Conney's work. Although this book is out of print now, it is probably available at your local library.

I am a person who is always in search of that new joke, that clever new quip, that new piece of witty wordplay. Coming across Mr. Brett's book of puns has proven a great addition to my informal comic repetoire, because he has included in his book some of the funniest (and, as are all good puns, most groan-inducing) puns I've ever seen. It's a hilarious book thanks to Mr. Brett's creative stories which he builds around his one-liner ending. "Don't Book a Judge" is well worth anyone's time and money, I think. In these days when wit seems to be fast vanishing from America, more works like those of Mr. Brett's are sorely needed.

I've read this book--three times. I practically laughed my soul out of my head. This is a collection of some incredible twists on words, plays on words, and "groaners." Anybody who loves to laugh, anyone who loves the English language, anyone who appreciates "cunning linguistics," will revel in these stories. The book is a collection of some forty-five or fifty stories, short, short stories each leading up to an incredible PUNchline. Some of the stories are old classics, but classics that have been more than simply dusted off and brought before the reader; they have been refined under the superb style of the author. These puns have been traveling the humor circuit for years, but Brett's inimitable style makes them sound new. Ohers are new, others are original. The reader is certain to meet some old favorites here as well make some new friends among the jokes and puns. Yes, the book is funny, but it is all puns--"punny"--and they don't just quit. Within this collection, you will meet the heavenly angel who "left his harp in Sam Clam's Disco," the English university students who, having accosted a group of ladies of the evening one day on campus, suggested they comprised a "jamb of tarts," or a "flourish of strumpets," or an "essay of Trollops," or an "anthology of prose." I won't go on--these lines are just a small sampling of what you can expect from Brett's hilarious collection. Truly, "Don't Book a Judge by his Cover: A Collection of the World's Most Outrageous Puns" is not to be judged by its cover; it must be judged by its intelligent, at times sophisticated, but always riotous contents.

Theodore A. Brett's book, "Don't Book a Judge by his Cover: A Collection of the World's Most Outrageous Puns," is a wonderfully hilarious romp through some of the funniest twists of words ever seen. Brett has an ear for language, and he has an ear for what people who love words, puns, and the language in general will like. There are some old chestnuts here that all punsmiths and punsters will recall and laugh at, but there are some original puns here that nobody's ever heard. The collection contains some 50 "pun-stories," stories that lead up to absoutely outrageous pun endings. In this collection you will read Brett's puns with appreciation for this own language, and as you read, occasionally you will anticpate an ending; more often you won't, but as he holds you in suspense, the reward at the end of each story is always worth the entertaining read. For example, here you'll meet the four Oxford students who meettheir don on campus. While they're talking, a group of prostitutes ambles by. The don asks the students who these women are. The students, anxious to impress the don, each answer in his own clever way. One says, "They are a jamb of tarts." Another offers, "They are a pride of loins." A third students susggests, "An essay of trollops." A fourth student, not to be outdone, claims the women are "A flourish of strumpets." The Oxford don, however, suggests that the women are nothing more than "An anthology of prose." I know; you're groaning, but that's good. AFter all, that's the "raison d'etre" of puns. You'll groan, howl, and chuckle at these stories. Get the book--it's a winner in every sense. Fewer books contain such PUNch.

Wow, I am sold! I just wish that I could buy the movie rights, as this could be academy an award potential. I travel extensively in buisness, and I read many a ook on jets and waitng at airports. Some of my likes are Tom Clancy, Steven King, John Grisham, Michael Crichton, and I hev absically read all of their books. I picked this book up by a flook recently, and I am glad that I did. This book gave put me on an emotional journey, and it made me think all of the way about events in my own past life, and I could on and on, but I will not. All that I can say is that the author has been able to grasp the essential secret of writing that will make me yearn for more of his works, such as I do for the above named authors! Truly, a qualuity pice of work, and yes, I believe that it would meake a great movie!

Enjoy the many facets of human kind, and marvel at the interaction between each characters own narcissisms. Join the family and feel the pain and joy of childbirth. The short-lived happiness of Frank, as he learns the one thing he desired above all else is less than perfect. The helplessness of Catherine, that having so much responsibility causes her to overlook one thing, and in doing so, hurt what was most precious to her family. The responsibility undertaken by Frances so the family can survive. The strength and self-destruction of all the characters, and how they deal with each other. The patience and acceptance of Johnny by Andre after time, who when he's least expecting it realizes his true feelings.
The hope that by reading Don't Cry Johnny, you will think about how you wish to be treated, and treat others in kind. As you internalize and wonder if you would treat Johnny any different, you need to see him for what he is. He is just a child that wants so badly to be accepted and loved, which is what so many of us want. Why then is it so hard to realize that even though people may look different, we all have feelings and wish to be treated with respect and kindness.
If you are looking for an intriguing book that will allow you to escape your own reality, Don't Cry Johnny will deliver. In the end be prepared to contemplate the complexities of life and wonder if you were any one of these characters, who would you be? Would you make the same decisions they made? Will you aspire to treat people differently? One thing is for sure, you will want to know more about what happens to the characters once you have finished Don't Cry Johnny.

It's amazing how someone so different can bring out the best and the worst in people. I was fascinated with how the author captured real human feelings. It made you laugh, it made you cry, and it DEFINITELY made you think.
This book is so powerful. It is a "must read" book that I recommend to everyone.
Richard Schotts has done an incredible job.

At first, I got a strange feeling that the beautiful woman on the cover was trying to say something to me. Was she from an ancient time trying to impart some sacred wisdom?

As I got pulled into the book, and pulled in I was, it became clear that this was no "how-to" book about tantra. In fact, I could say it was more of a how-not-to book. With each page I felt I was given a chance to see the insides of a working sex cult without having to risk disease, or cover my naked body with ashes in a cemetary.

Kamala Devi doesn't resort to any flowery tricks of writing to express her story. The subject and the location have enough flowers, color and blood and guts of their own. Instead she uses direct language to convey the events. As an adult I appreciated her candid descriptions and no holds barred approach of telling a story that can be shocking all the way from the brothels of Bangkok to the drug-crazed beaches of South India.

This book has shaken up my view of tantra. The gurus in the book don't correspond to the beautiful and loving teachers I have met in the 8 years I've been practicing tantra in California.

I can relate to the young, hip western characters who help me absorb the teachings of this ancient practice in a form I could never get in a how-to text.

There is definitely a dangerous edge to Kamala Devi's tantra and I appreciated experiencing it vicariously through Sal, the main character. I especially appreciated sitting back and getting all the secret initiations while he did all the scary and dangerous stuff for me.

Sometimes a practice or language spreads to other parts of the world and then disappears at its source, like a palm tree that sends its coconuts floating across the ocean before its native island is swallowed up by a volcano, leaving children of the tree surviving elsewhere. Once the story drifts into the cemeteries of South India the devotees are channeling a dead master who is holding on by his already deceased fingernails. While his brand of tantra might be dying the story certainly didn't. It was in these later parts that I found myself unable to put it down.

By reading Don't Drink the Punch, I experienced examples of how others could pour themselves in body and soul. While I am not ready to sign up for a naked tantric cemetery tour myself, I can better appreciate the history of the tantra that I experience here in California, making my personal practice more authentic and alive!

This is a book that is part adventure, part sexy romp, part travelog, and tretise on the some of the more obsure rites of those following the non-dualistic shakta path.

There are major lapses in plot and character development, but who cares? This book is written in a light breezy style, perfect for the western reader.

But after you put the book down you may want to think about these important questions. . .how are we attached to our egos?, how can we affirm the spark of divinity within ourselves and others?, and how can we live our daily lives with integrity, purpose, and love?

Will there be a sequel?

Moving from mundane to mystical awareness is a mind-blowing, life-changing experience. Suddenly, superficial everyday "reality" is forever shifted - and nothing can be taken for granted, ever again.

"Don't Drink the Punch: An Adventure in Tantra by Kamala Devi is a compelling, consciousness-raising and heart-opening entree into the erotic, exotic, deeply spiritual world of tantra yoga, "a way of being beyond the doer and the action." (p.295)

Set in the deliciously alien (and steamy!) cultures and climates of Thailand and India, Sal, our California-born middle-class hero, surrenders himself to a tantalizing and refreshing Brazilian goddess who leads him on a breathtakingly cinematic pilgrimage into the love-laden awakening of his very own soul.

As a practitioner - and avid fan! - of this ancient art, I find the subject and nuance of tantra to be thoroughly provocative. Kamala Devi's ability to weave intricate, visceral subtleties of tantric philosophy, focus and attention into a smart, juicy and fast-moving story filled with intrigue, romance and transcendent wisdom... is truly impressive. This novel is a mainstream hit film ready to be made - and a powerful introduction to a sensual, rewarding and dare-I-say `holy' alternate path, open and available to all who wish to learn.

Thank you Kamala Devi, for writing this!

A lusty odyssey of divine inspiration

I was truly surprised at how much I loved this book - and even more so with the second read. Unlike some of my other favorite authors who can fill pages with slippery stylized prose, Don't Drink the Punch is a relatively simple, straight forward story (albeit very sexy) with believable characters and insightful dialog developing into some increasingly profound concepts that culminates all too soon in a wonderfully classic surprise ending. It's very easy to imagine this as a major motion picture that we'd all want to see again and again!

Having been in and around the California Tantra scene for over a decade, I honestly didn't expect to glean a whole lot of new insights from a novel that I had assumed to be aimed at the beginner, but I was quite wrong. Just as the author alludes to throughout the book, for everyone from the acolyte to the ascendant, there is always room to learn and grow.

Don't Drink the Punch is a lusty odyssey of divine inspiration; guided by love, self-exploration, intrigue and an evanescent ascended master, a group of mostly western tantricas embarks on a pilgrimage across India in search of the deeper mystical secrets of ancient tantric expression. As the reader, I got to voyeuristically tag along, and recognizing the depth of what she has to offer, soon found myself asking the questions posed to our hero and heroine, seeking new answers for myself.

This book served as a timely reminder of my deeper needs for growth and development; for enlightenment... and inspired me to re-evaluate my own path and to spend more time in meditation, in open hearted expression and exploring what's really important - my connection to my greater self and to the divine.

And what a magnificent way to get there...

Absolutely spectacular!

I didn't know what to expect when I picked this book up to read it, but the cover art was beautiful so it got my attention. I was not disappointed! I was hooked from the first page and couldn't stop reading it until I finished it. It was a real page turner and a beautifully written story about love, passion, Tantra, obsession... and ultimately about personal fulfillment and finding one's own true path in this world. The main character was someone I could identify with on a personal level, and he was a MAN! Steamy and sensual but also light and humorous, I found it both sad and uplifting at the same time, something that takes a talented writer to accomplish effectively, and Kamala Devi does not disappoint. I have already recommended this book to several friends to read, because it is just that good. Highly recommended.

This book by the author of "Don't Call Me Pig! A Javelina Story" and "Lizards for Lunch. A Roadrunner's Tale" is a wonderful blend of whimsical rhyme and natural history lesson. Young readers (or listeners) will love following the antics of a red-capped armadillo student as his teacher armadillo lectures the a restless armadillo class all about their history, biology, habitat, and most importantly the dangers of crossing the road! Bringing the words to life are Nathaniel Jensen's delightful illustrations--the expressions on the little armadillos faces are priceless.

This is a sweet story you won't mind sharing with your child again and again. The illustrations are first rate, each page has its own color palate as the story progresses from evening to dawn (armadillos are nocturnal, after all!). My three year old has a new best friend!

The publishers also did a great job on the printing. The images are crisp, the paper is of good quality so that the colors jump out at you.

Good for kids or adults who are collectors of picture books.

The author, a victim of a shark attack, manages to turn suffering into art as he plays off the old children's rhyme of "This is the hosue that Jack Built" Mother Goose rhyme. His message of reconciliation is just what we need, especially in this current climate of fear and aggression. The art accompanying each page is as beautifully rendered as the text.

I love all of Pat Hutchins books. I have been reading them to children for many years. Don't Forget the Bacon is lots of fun for children who are old enough to have to remember several things at once and know how hard that can be. I think it will be enjoyed most by children who are late pre-school through early elementary age.

A TRUE CLASSIC!

Me and my sister's read this book as children til it literally fell apart. One day, out of the blue I remembered this book while reading another childhood favorite (hop on pop by dr.seuss) to my [...] son. it is now a part of our bedtime ritual - he loves it!!! It is such a great feeling to see him enjoying the same things that i liked as a young child...

A pure delight

I ran accross this book while browsing and it brought back such fun remembrances of reading to my children when they were at that delightful young age. This, as well as, "The doorbell rang" were always favorites. Cute illustrations and funny entertaining story lines. A true gem.

My son is 15, and this is still his favorite book!

I bought "Don't Forget the Bacon" at a library book sale for $.25. It had been taped and rebound several times. At the time my daughter was 5 years old and my son was 2. We would curl up together and read it over and over each night. They loved to chime in: "...and don't forget the bacon." It remained a part of our bedtime story ritual for many years. When my son entered kindergarten, he insisted on taking it to share with his class for show-and-tell. Although it is quite worn out now, I kept it as a keepsake with some of their other childhood books and toys. My daughter is now a freshman at the University of Illinois at, and my son is a freshman at Marian Catholic High School. This Friday, I will be presenting a workshop on Shared Reading as part of an inservice training for the teachers in my school district. I immediately thought of "Don't Forget the Bacon" as the perfect read aloud book. My son eagerly help me find it, curled up in my lap, and insisted that I read it! We shared many fond memories that night. After calling several book stores to get a new copy, I was delighted to find it on the WEB. I'm looking forward to receiving the new book, but I'll still treasure the $.25 copy (which I have to retape again!) because of the joy of reading it instilled in my children.

A classic in the making--one I will treasure always

Captivating, endlessly twirling thoughts, pictures and words into a work of literature, NOT a picture book. It changed me internally--and I will never forget the startling ending. A perfect example of "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose", Don't Forget the Bacon is something that children and adults should read--if not treasure.

Advent is always an exciting time for churches and pastors. But it is often difficult to remain fresh and informative. Dr. Gondola provides 20 sermon starters for both experienced and novice pastors. The sermons include traditional advent Sundays, Christmas Eve/Day, and Christmas tide. This book will help develop excellent sermons during this time of expectation.

This book contains good, concrete illustrations that fortify and clarify the more abstract thought of the author.
Short, simply stated, but well written segments bulild to a point of understanding that take the reader forward toward being a more fully realized Christian

An ideal date turns nasty.....

I thought that everyone's reaction to Lila's story was particularly truthful. Especially since some of her closest friends refused to believe that it really happened. It seems such a shame that Lila had to get another girl as evidence. I mean, if these so-called friends of hers had believed her in the first place, then she wouldn't have had to suffer. I definitely recommend this book to others. It also questions the notion of friendship as well as date rape.

I think that this book is different then the others.

For once, there is something wrong with rich, popular Lila Fowler. I think that more people should have had more faith in Lila, and not gone against her. It had a lot of suspence, and irony. You don't expect this to happen to Lila, maybe one of the other characters, but not Lila. This book is a little different than the othes, and its a nice change.

An excellent book.

This book was very well written. Lila goes out on a date with John a sports editor for the school paper, everybody thought he was a nice, shy, quiet guy. But they were wrong. He tries to attack Lila at Miller;s Point. For awhile, she does not say anything, but she finally does. And nobody believes her, they say with her reputation, why should they. In the end , she finds another girl he did this to and everybody finally believes her. I think this teaches girls that it doesn't matter what kind of guy people think they are, they may always be someone different, someone you wouldn't want to know.

I loved it!!!!!!!!

I thought that this book was incredible. It shows that something like sexual abuse is real, and that we shouldn't feel embarrassed to talk about it.

One of a rush of SVH books dealing with adolescent issues. Snobbish flirt Lila's romance with wholesome John turns nasty when he tries to force himself on her. Shattered, Lila falls into deep depression, made far worse when she finds the courage to speak up about the attack, only to find her peers turn against her. The lightweight series deals surprisingly well with the difficult issue of date rape, depicting it in ways that should move and affect its audience of young girls without distressing them too much. The surprising choice of having manipulative bad-girl Lila attacked by long-time "good guy" John, hero of a volume or two of SVH himself, works very well.

The Don't Go Hungry Diet

I found this book last year in Australia and had several phone sessions with Dr. Amanda. She is the resounding voice of reason that any dieter loves to hear, that is starving doesn't work, listen to your body and learn when you are hungry and eat then.

She advocates whole, healthy food that is readily available and has simple tips like, eat plenty of fruit and veggies, eat a wide variety of foods and reaquaint yourself with what your body wants; she also says don't panic if you slip and don't punish yourself. When I moved to the US I carried my copy of The Don't Go Hungry Diet in my luggage so that I had it as soon as I arrived. Her recipes are also great.

Thanks Dr. Amanda.

If you have struggled with weight, whether it be 100 lbs or the final 10lbs. this book will be a refreshing break from all the weight loss info you have most likely compiled. I picked up this book when I struggled with losing the final 10 lbs. through calorie restriction and intense exercise. I was doing everything "right" but still never saw a break in the scale or my measurements. In fact, my waist was increasing!! I was burnt out with tracking every single calorie that went in my mouth.

This book was the relief I needed. Dr. Amanda's principles made sense and were backed by science. The thing that struck me the most was her explanation of how we can be so good on a diet and then suddenly binge like we had never eaten food before. I have struggled with eating disorders since I was in grade school (I'm almost 40 now) and have overcome most of my harmful behavior, but could not figure out why those binges would still grab hold of me. Once I started applying Dr. Amanda's principles, the binges stopped and so did my beating myself up. I realized that depriving my body for so long only leads to a craving. That it isn't something uncontrollable. I have control by listening to my body, eating healthy foods most of the time and allowing myself treats without guilt. I still have my days where I overeat past fullness, but if I truly listen to my body the fat brake kicks in and I typically eat less the next day, I still track my calories because it helps me, but I'm no longer obsessive. I have lost 2 lbs towards my 10 lb goal and know it will take time, but I am OK with it because I"ve learned a way I can live with.

I have read all of the diet books, and have lost the same weight over and over in the last 15-20 years. I stumbled across this book when I was feeling myself losing my will power after a 6 month period of calorie counting and regular exercise. I was stuck and just couldn't lose anymore. I read this book and followed it's deceptively simple concepts and am very slowly losing the last few pounds without any calorie counting, just truly tuning into my body and exercising. It is something I feel I can do for the rest of my life, because it is about what is within me, not about following some program until I just can't anymore. I do not work for the author in any way, but I have corresponded with her. She is kind and caring, and she is really onto something you have not read about in any other book. Buy it, read it two or three times until you really get it.

The Only "Diet" Book I'd Ever Recommend

When I read this book, I knew it was something I was looking for - based on evolutionary theory. No, I'm not affiliated with Dr. Amanda in anyway and am not a paid reviewer.

This is the first "diet" book which truly gives you the information (power) back to make your own decisions. This book helps reconnect you to your body and its signals of hunger and satiety. We live so far from what our bodies are telling us, that its no wonder we're having such difficulty with weight issues. We crave nutrients, not volume.

Don't ever read another diet article about will power or motivation. You won't need it. Don't ever read another about counting calories. Just read this book and take back the ability to listen to your own body. I've already shared my copy with friends. Work with your body, stop beating yourself up, and be patient. This is the guide to a lifestyle you have been looking for.

The Holy Grail is here if you are looking for it

Over the past 25 years I have been training clients in bodybuilding, fitness, and martial arts. In the diet arena I have often felt uncomfortable giving the same standard industry "advice" about eating 6 meals a day, not eating carbs, no food after 7.30pm, the list goes on....This is because of the massive variation in results witnessed with different clients under the same advice. Dr Amanda's book clarifies and destroys many of these myths with hardcore scientific research and real world testing.

If you are struggling with your weight you must buy this book immediately.

Grab a highlighter and read it until you understand the content well enough to teach it. Once you learn how to tune into your body's signals you will be on the road to success. Readers will also discover that if you arrive at your goal weight by sheer willpower you will have inadvertently turned your body into a super efficient fat storing machine. You may win the battle but will lose the war big time. In other words you will ultimately get fatter and fatter. Not surprisingly, as determined as you may be to stick to your "diet" when you go up against millions of years of evolutionary development you will ultimately fail.

The book will show you how to prevail by working with your body rather than against it. No fuzzy new age theories here. The author is not a celebrity trainer to the stars, she is a is a molecular scientist with a PhD from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, who has spent her professional life in this area of research. This stuff is all backed by hard science and based on how our bodies actually work.

A word of warning. The primary concepts taught in this book are very simple but can be easily misunderstood by anybody simply skimming through the book. Yes, you will never go hungry on this diet but first you must get back in tune with your own physical signals. Some chronic dieters have lost touch with their natural signals and re-acquainting yourself with them is a key component of Dr Amanda's approach.Detailed steps are provided.

The book is clearly written, thoroughly researched and referenced. If you want to lose weight all you have to do is read it thoroughly and apply the method diligently.
