Definitely Don't Blame the MusicReview Date: 2003-11-03
Seventeen year-old Susan Hall is excited about her senior year in high school. She is the music editor for the schools yearbook. Susan has the biggest crush on a boy names Anthony, but she has some competition with the chief editor of the yearbook, Shepherd. When everything is going fine for Susan an unsuspected visit from her twenty-five year-old sister, Ashley, turns everything upside-down. Ashley holds a grudge against the family because she was going to be a famous rock star, but everything went wrong and she failed at success. Susan came up with a great idea for the yearbook so she has to ask her scary classmate Whit for help. When Susan starts to talk to Whit she realizes he is not a bad guy at all, and she develops a crush on him. Things at home are not going good for Susan though, Ashley keeps ruining things, and she even tries to kill Susan.
I like how the story has a twist at the end. It is a very happy ending too. Everything leads up to the climax perfectly. It is a very fast read. Even if you don't have a psychotic sister you can find something to relate to in the story. Like trying to make things better in your family or trying to impress a guy at school, you can somehow relate.
I recommend this book to mostly girl teenagers that like to read about the everyday feelings that we encounter. Also I recommend this book to people that like to read about family issues and people that like happy endings.

The hope that by reading Don't Cry Johnny, you will think about how you wish to be treated, and treat others in kind. As you internalize and wonder if you would treat Johnny any different, you need to see him for what he is. He is just a child that wants so badly to be accepted and loved, which is what so many of us want. Why then is it so hard to realize that even though people may look different, we all have feelings and wish to be treated with respect and kindness.
If you are looking for an intriguing book that will allow you to escape your own reality, Don't Cry Johnny will deliver. In the end be prepared to contemplate the complexities of life and wonder if you were any one of these characters, who would you be? Would you make the same decisions they made? Will you aspire to treat people differently? One thing is for sure, you will want to know more about what happens to the characters once you have finished Don't Cry Johnny.

Beyond Awesome!Review Date: 2002-11-27
It is a story that is so intense and heart felt that I hated to put it down and couldn't wait to pick it back up!
It's amazing how someone so different can bring out the best and the worst in people. I was fascinated with how the author captured real human feelings. It made you laugh, it made you cry, and it DEFINITELY made you think.
This book is so powerful. It is a "must read" book that I recommend to everyone.
Richard Schotts has done an incredible job.
Beautifully written. Makes you actually feel like you are in the story. A definite must!

This book Transmits Pure Tantra!Review Date: 2006-06-26
As I got pulled into the book, and pulled in I was, it became clear that this was no "how-to" book about tantra. In fact, I could say it was more of a how-not-to book. With each page I felt I was given a chance to see the insides of a working sex cult without having to risk disease, or cover my naked body with ashes in a cemetary.
Kamala Devi doesn't resort to any flowery tricks of writing to express her story. The subject and the location have enough flowers, color and blood and guts of their own. Instead she uses direct language to convey the events. As an adult I appreciated her candid descriptions and no holds barred approach of telling a story that can be shocking all the way from the brothels of Bangkok to the drug-crazed beaches of South India.
This book has shaken up my view of tantra. The gurus in the book don't correspond to the beautiful and loving teachers I have met in the 8 years I've been practicing tantra in California.
I can relate to the young, hip western characters who help me absorb the teachings of this ancient practice in a form I could never get in a how-to text.
There is definitely a dangerous edge to Kamala Devi's tantra and I appreciated experiencing it vicariously through Sal, the main character. I especially appreciated sitting back and getting all the secret initiations while he did all the scary and dangerous stuff for me.
Sometimes a practice or language spreads to other parts of the world and then disappears at its source, like a palm tree that sends its coconuts floating across the ocean before its native island is swallowed up by a volcano, leaving children of the tree surviving elsewhere. Once the story drifts into the cemeteries of South India the devotees are channeling a dead master who is holding on by his already deceased fingernails. While his brand of tantra might be dying the story certainly didn't. It was in these later parts that I found myself unable to put it down.
By reading Don't Drink the Punch, I experienced examples of how others could pour themselves in body and soul. While I am not ready to sign up for a naked tantric cemetery tour myself, I can better appreciate the history of the tantra that I experience here in California, making my personal practice more authentic and alive!
A Multilayered ConfectionReview Date: 2007-10-28
There are major lapses in plot and character development, but who cares? This book is written in a light breezy style, perfect for the western reader.
But after you put the book down you may want to think about these important questions. . .how are we attached to our egos?, how can we affirm the spark of divinity within ourselves and others?, and how can we live our daily lives with integrity, purpose, and love?
Will there be a sequel?
"Don't Drink the Punch" is JUICY!Review Date: 2006-06-27
"Don't Drink the Punch: An Adventure in Tantra by Kamala Devi is a compelling, consciousness-raising and heart-opening entree into the erotic, exotic, deeply spiritual world of tantra yoga, "a way of being beyond the doer and the action." (p.295)
Set in the deliciously alien (and steamy!) cultures and climates of Thailand and India, Sal, our California-born middle-class hero, surrenders himself to a tantalizing and refreshing Brazilian goddess who leads him on a breathtakingly cinematic pilgrimage into the love-laden awakening of his very own soul.
As a practitioner - and avid fan! - of this ancient art, I find the subject and nuance of tantra to be thoroughly provocative. Kamala Devi's ability to weave intricate, visceral subtleties of tantric philosophy, focus and attention into a smart, juicy and fast-moving story filled with intrigue, romance and transcendent wisdom... is truly impressive. This novel is a mainstream hit film ready to be made - and a powerful introduction to a sensual, rewarding and dare-I-say `holy' alternate path, open and available to all who wish to learn.
Thank you Kamala Devi, for writing this!

A lusty odyssey of divine inspirationReview Date: 2006-07-31
Having been in and around the California Tantra scene for over a decade, I honestly didn't expect to glean a whole lot of new insights from a novel that I had assumed to be aimed at the beginner, but I was quite wrong. Just as the author alludes to throughout the book, for everyone from the acolyte to the ascendant, there is always room to learn and grow.
Don't Drink the Punch is a lusty odyssey of divine inspiration; guided by love, self-exploration, intrigue and an evanescent ascended master, a group of mostly western tantricas embarks on a pilgrimage across India in search of the deeper mystical secrets of ancient tantric expression. As the reader, I got to voyeuristically tag along, and recognizing the depth of what she has to offer, soon found myself asking the questions posed to our hero and heroine, seeking new answers for myself.
This book served as a timely reminder of my deeper needs for growth and development; for enlightenment... and inspired me to re-evaluate my own path and to spend more time in meditation, in open hearted expression and exploring what's really important - my connection to my greater self and to the divine.
And what a magnificent way to get there...

The Don't Go Hungry DietReview Date: 2008-10-01
She advocates whole, healthy food that is readily available and has simple tips like, eat plenty of fruit and veggies, eat a wide variety of foods and reaquaint yourself with what your body wants; she also says don't panic if you slip and don't punish yourself. When I moved to the US I carried my copy of The Don't Go Hungry Diet in my luggage so that I had it as soon as I arrived. Her recipes are also great.
Thanks Dr. Amanda.
Stop beating yourself up and listen to your bodyReview Date: 2008-10-01
This book was the relief I needed. Dr. Amanda's principles made sense and were backed by science. The thing that struck me the most was her explanation of how we can be so good on a diet and then suddenly binge like we had never eaten food before. I have struggled with eating disorders since I was in grade school (I'm almost 40 now) and have overcome most of my harmful behavior, but could not figure out why those binges would still grab hold of me. Once I started applying Dr. Amanda's principles, the binges stopped and so did my beating myself up. I realized that depriving my body for so long only leads to a craving. That it isn't something uncontrollable. I have control by listening to my body, eating healthy foods most of the time and allowing myself treats without guilt. I still have my days where I overeat past fullness, but if I truly listen to my body the fat brake kicks in and I typically eat less the next day, I still track my calories because it helps me, but I'm no longer obsessive. I have lost 2 lbs towards my 10 lb goal and know it will take time, but I am OK with it because I"ve learned a way I can live with.

The Only "Diet" Book I'd Ever Recommend Review Date: 2008-09-01
This is the first "diet" book which truly gives you the information (power) back to make your own decisions. This book helps reconnect you to your body and its signals of hunger and satiety. We live so far from what our bodies are telling us, that its no wonder we're having such difficulty with weight issues. We crave nutrients, not volume.
Don't ever read another diet article about will power or motivation. You won't need it. Don't ever read another about counting calories. Just read this book and take back the ability to listen to your own body. I've already shared my copy with friends. Work with your body, stop beating yourself up, and be patient. This is the guide to a lifestyle you have been looking for.
The Holy Grail is here if you are looking for itReview Date: 2008-09-01
If you are struggling with your weight you must buy this book immediately.
Grab a highlighter and read it until you understand the content well enough to teach it. Once you learn how to tune into your body's signals you will be on the road to success. Readers will also discover that if you arrive at your goal weight by sheer willpower you will have inadvertently turned your body into a super efficient fat storing machine. You may win the battle but will lose the war big time. In other words you will ultimately get fatter and fatter. Not surprisingly, as determined as you may be to stick to your "diet" when you go up against millions of years of evolutionary development you will ultimately fail.
The book will show you how to prevail by working with your body rather than against it. No fuzzy new age theories here. The author is not a celebrity trainer to the stars, she is a is a molecular scientist with a PhD from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, who has spent her professional life in this area of research. This stuff is all backed by hard science and based on how our bodies actually work.
A word of warning. The primary concepts taught in this book are very simple but can be easily misunderstood by anybody simply skimming through the book. Yes, you will never go hungry on this diet but first you must get back in tune with your own physical signals. Some chronic dieters have lost touch with their natural signals and re-acquainting yourself with them is a key component of Dr Amanda's approach.Detailed steps are provided.
The book is clearly written, thoroughly researched and referenced. If you want to lose weight all you have to do is read it thoroughly and apply the method diligently.
