I always hoped that God had a sense of humor, and this visit into His living room proved me right! Mr. Harpe re-writes the Book of Revelations in his FIRE FELL FROM HEAVEN, and we get to watch His Hallowed Holiness make Godly decisions while playing video games (He doesn't approve of cable TV, by the way).

This is by far the most hilarious thing I have read in a long time. A bit irreverent, you say? Well, just remember that God (and Mr. Harpe) has a sense of humor!

In this deightful tale, Mr. Harpe displays a unique sense of humor. Combined with a whimsical bit of irreverence, he gives a comedic version of the end of the world. I will be looking for more to come from this writer.

E. Don Harpe really did it this time. Such Imagination. The conversations between Father and Son... I'm in awe of how he crafted this story to border on the irreverant and filled it with such a meaningful message. His treatment of the subject matter is humorous but filled with those read between the line messages. His style is unique. No superficiality here. He deserves to be read over and over again, and on the best seller list. Raleigh Pinskey, author of 101 Ways to Promote Yourself.

Fire Fell From Heaven is hilarious, one of the funniest stories I have read in years, and I am sending the link to all of my friends. Thanks for this one, Amazon Shorts.

Oh, thanks for making it a free download as well.

This is a really great book - not just about football. Rather a story of quirky life events and a string of tragedies you will never forget. It's gut wrenching story of pain, but yet a bautiful story none the less. Beautifully written. I can promise you won't forget. I am not a huge football lover (i am a fan just not a maniac) but it's not neccesary to love this book. It's truly a great read that you should MAKE the time to read.

I was a 14-year-old in 8th grade when I read this compelling book, "The Forever Season", by the ever-so-talented Don Keith. To me Don was a devious Spider, weaving his finely spun web (The Forever Season). And I, I was the defensless fly, struggling to get through the cobbwebs of suspens and mystery, only to find myself being hooked deeper into the relm of twisted strands leading their way to a shocking and unbelievable douple ending. Once I picked up this book of books, I just could not put it down. It was as if it were glued to my hands. I really related to this book, for Don wrote the majority of it in Southern slang and I'm partly from the South. When Don had put down his pen, what he had infront of him was an elaberate maze, one which you must be prepared for the unexpected to be able to escape its walls of words, and its traps of enigmatic conclusions. I truly recommend this book, for even my words don't do it justice.

The book gives a unique look into college football. I didn't want to put it down once I began reading. Football provides the setting for the story, but it goes far beyond that. You don't have to be a football fan to love this book. Give it a chance. I felt the characters were interesting, and those who would criticize them as stereotypes don't know a good read when they see it. I wonder if the reviewers that blasted it even read this book?

A great book for anyone who likes to read about football or just reality and how the real world is from another persons perspective. It almost feels like you are in the persons shoes walking in their yard playing football or full grown in college playing the big game against ole miss. I gave this a five star rating for many reasons besides the descriptions though. I loved the way he thought about how c.p. was not just centered around football and that he actually liked to read poetry too and was good at something besides football like in many books that i have read that are about a football star. this book is great and anyone that can get their hands on it should read it

The Gay Place is a winner in so many ways: an absorbing, deep novel, a historical novel about a key time in our history, an accurate an perceptive regional novel (about my home town, Austin!) and, the best novel on American, or maybe any, politics ever written. Billy Lee Brammer was a speech writer for Lyndon Johnson who was fascinated by the world where a sentence could start with high minded political goals and end in crude bullying. A world where bribery, humiliation and blackmail were tools of the trade, often for worthy purposes. A must-read American classic that grows in reputation as time passes.

This is a wonderful trilogy of novels on state politics. Though they seem disjointed, they are unified around the shadowy figure of the governor, who lurks in the background manipulating people and events down to the minutest detail. Thus, the immediate action taking place is a kind of epiphenomenon, all players that are living chess pieces in the governor's grand game, which is never fully explained: that is the real art of this novel, that it leaves far more unsaid than explicitely stated. The reader has to connect the dots.

In the first novel, the governor has chosen a young legislator for an unaccustomed role in the spotlight: his life, like those of his cohorts, is a mess of alcohol and libertinism, but he is also struggling with his conscience to do the right thing. There are so many layers to what was really happening that it is impossible to explain, because the reader can only suspect what the governor is doing. The governor mixes the most intimate personal machinations, it appeared to me, with a legislative purpose and to depose (even destroy) a potential rival. It reminds me, of course, of LBJ, a politician without equal. One of the really interesting aspects is that the author describes many people just like GW Bush: priviledged, brash, debauched, and inadvertantly wondering what they should be doing. If you read this, you will understand GW Bush and his milieu much better - that is a sign of the timelessness of Bramer's achievement, truly a masterpiece.

The second novel is similar: the governor's enemies are defeated, while he stages and manipulates events to suit whatever his purposes are. It is at times brutal and sad, yet funny and even uplifting, particularly in the scenes of introspection, when the characters have flashes of insight and empathy. The plot, which is only a vehicle to expose cryptic motvations, is the governor attempting to get an appointed young senator to run for a true popular mandate - he is a complex and flawed character, whom the governor sponsors out of respect but also to keep him in his pocket. It is splendidly ambiguous, as is all politics. The third involves similar personal struggles and an ineviablle passing of power, again, very realistic and down to earth. Marriages are destroyed, while politics plays in, and the characters wallow in existential angst while working very hard and yet hardly understanding why. It is a unique combination of themes, a genuine work of literature.

One thing that really fascinated me was how similar this is to a Gore Vidal novel, a kind of comedy of the priviledged who inadvertently do politics while living their complicated lives. The political action is entirely off stage, but solved in their everyday actions and affairs and drunken parties. I have no doubt that Vidal carefullly studied the literary method that Bramer pioneered here, which resulted in his truly fine series of novels on American politics. Finally, tt really is where Bush came from, a reflection on the depth of Bramer's art, almost prescient in its intelligence and lack of facile scrutiny.

Warmly recommended as great art and a unique view into politics.

Not just LBJ, this book is about politics and the ways of power. Very well written, insightful and lyric, it might be the best kept secret in political fiction. On a side note--man did people drink a lot then. Its amazing.

Anyone who loves writing and politics will enjoy this book.

In the 500 plus pages of this remarkable trilogy, Billy Lee Brammer does more to explicate and evaluate American politics, especially Texas politics and even more especially, populist politics as practiced by Lyndon B.Johnson, than all the ponderous Caro-type analyses that weigh us down blur the color and cloy the flavor. More than a portrait of LBJ, the book is an artful depiction of the lure of politics and its terrible cost on those who pursue it. All this is conveyed with humor, sympathy and a clear-eyed vision of the American scene of the 60's.

I turn to Moon Handbooks first for nearly every trip, and I haven't been disappointed yet. This is the first time I've bought a Moon Handbook that covers an entire state; the coverage is less in-depth for specific sites of interest like Olympic National Park, yet there is plenty of information for the many places a visitor to Washington State might want to see. Reading this book made me look forward to my trip even more.

You'll find no fancy illustrations in this book - simply good information.

The author makes some snarky comments toward a local Christian ministry - which seems pointless - and includes a great deal of information specifically geared toward homosexual travelers. I didn't realize that was a niche market, but evidently it is.

Regardless, the book is quite thorough, if opinionated. I prefer the "Hidden Washington" books for pointers on places off the tourist track.

Recommended.

The first Moon book that I purchased several years ago was the book on Oregon. We made significant travel arrangements based on the information in that book and we were never disappointed.

An upcoming trip to Seattle/San Juans is based on the information in the Washington book. The real beauty is that the book leads you to the most likely area to visit, gives references to hotels, etc., then you can complete your research by reviewing up-to-date information about that spot/hotel online. We chose Orcas island for 2 days before heading to Seattle and I do not expect to be disappointed.

The authors are even-handed and complete --- they are not elitists, reviewing only the high-end accomodations. They have a good sample of a broad range of places. They point out lesser known restaurants and scenic spots as well.

I have found their advice in the Oregon, Washington, Coastal California and New England books to be quite excellent.

I have purchased quite a few different travel books in the past, but Moon Handbooks are my travel book of choice.

Everyone Needs to Know How to Buy a House

Review Date: 2008-02-28
Buying a house can be so exciting particularly for a first time home buyer. The idea of actually owning one's own piece of land is incredible. However the process and the complexities of mortgages can be a confusing headache at best. The Home Mortgage Book is a really good book for getting rid of some of that confusion.

This book breaks down the mortgage process step by step. Elements beyond just the mortgage payment like escrow and mortgage points are explained. The Mortgage Book doesn't just explain mortgages but explains the entire process of buying a house. The reader learns how what to look for when inspecting a house and how to determine what type of home is right for them.

When buying a house there are so many decisions to make. Several times throughout the Mortgage Book the author helps the reader make a decision by weighing the advantages and disadvantages of that choice. Should one buy a manufactured home or not? Should one use a bank or mortgage company? Should one get a fixed or adjustable loan? The reader isn't told what to do but just given more information in order to make an informed decision.

Even if one isn't buying a house right now, it's a good book. This is simply because everyone needs to at least know what the mortgage process is like. This is just good information that every adult should know. Also if a reader has less than perfect credit, tips are given on how to improve credit. So that when one is in the market to buy that first home he or she can be knowledgeable about what to expect.

Overall this is a great book for the first time home buyer. The language is simple and thorough explanations are given without bogging the reader down in too many unnecessary details. This book is a really good idea for someone in their twenties who may have just graduated college or newlyweds wanting to start a family. Even if you're not buying a house at the moment it's just good information to know.

Much more than mortgages - an essential homebuyers' book

While this book is primarily about mortgages, it would be wise to point out that it, in fact, covers everything from the moment that someone decides that they're going to buy a house. And, as such, it's a great step-by-step guide to the entire process.
In fact, some of the introductory chapters, on considerations before taking the plunge are as valuable, if not more, than the more detailed banking and mortgage chapters.
The style of writing is very factual and clear, which makes it useful reading, but, at times, a little dull. However, it's good, relevant, information, and comprehensive, so it's only a minor irritant.
A better title - or sub-title - for the book might have been something along the lines of "So you want to buy a house? A step-by-step guide from decision making to mortgage." Actually, the book's title doesn't even come close to doing the book justice, it's a guide for every step of the home-buying process, and, as such, has to be regarded as a very useful - if not essential - book.
The information on every step of the process is top notch, and the tables and charts invaluable. This could easily be the homebuyers' Bible.
While not many institutions would necessarily want the customer to be totally informed about the entire process, it would be good if the first step in anyone buying a home would be the compulsory purchase of this book. It's that useful.
With the financial world and mortgages under scrutiny, it would be wonderful for all considering buying a home to save themselves a lot of potential problems - and a lot of money - by first investing in this book.

The Home Mortgage Book is an all inclusive guide to buying your dream home. The book talks you through each step of the process and it's a good thing to keep handy. If you are thinking of buying, it's a great reference. The book also addresses if you already have a mortgage and you are considering changes.

There are worksheets to help you see where you are before you start the process. The information is good for you to read to help prepare you so that you are not taken advantage of.

If you already have a mortgage, it's a great tool to help you understand all the terms. The book even offers suggestions if you are unable to pay. It outlines what a reverse mortgage is without someone trying to sell you on something.

Expansive subjects and approaches make it a top recommendation.

Finding and understanding the best mortgage for a dream home can be a confusing experience; but with this book the process will be easy, making it a fine beginner's pick for public libraries and collections where introductory real estate investing is a hot topic. Modern strategies for financing and closing on a house tell how to uncover unknown assets, enhance credit ratings, understand lender requirements and timelines, and more. Other books of course give some of this information, but this title's expansive subjects and approaches make it a top recommendation.

The first time I bought a house I was completely overwhelmed by the terms, paperwork, and procedures thrown at me; from the house hunt, to the offer process, to the mortgage process!
This book completely broke down for me everything that "the other side" seems to already know.

I found it helpful to read about purchase agreements, home inspections, and other key points related to the actual selection and agreement on the details of the house.
Additionally I found the sections about the different types of mortgages and the full details about each type of mortgage completely explained in a way that can be understood by someone who is not in the mortgage business!

After reading the information in this book I feel so much more informed and confident about approaching the process of buying my second home.

Dinah is an American girl who wishes to attend a pricey small college along with her wealthier best friend. With an aim toward obtaining a horsemanship course certificate so she can work her way through college, both Dinah and her girlfriend "Bee-Bye" sign up the Owen-Allerford Riding School's Horsemaster course in England. You join Dinah as she works hard to care for her horse, learns to ride and jump properly and then teach others how to do so, and even acquires veterinary knowledge with fifteen other boys and girls. While this description may sound dull, the narrative never falters and you gallop (pun intended) into interesting lessons on horsemanship and horse care and end up learning something as you read the story without even trying hard. This book is the perfect gift for a horse-crazy child who thinks owning a horse is some fantasyland vision of galloping endlessly over sunny pastures without a thought to grooming and feeding. Dinah's classmates--like lazy Adrienne and flirtatious Enzo--and instructors, especially the precise Captain Pinski and the insufferable "head girl," Mercy Hale, are memorable as well. A blue ribbon to Don Sanford for his engaging and excellent narrative!

I checked it out so many times from the school library that I don't think anyone else ever had the chance to read it! The movie version didn't quite do it justice, focusing more on showcasing Annette's talents than on the book's subject. For me, the book is as much of a well written classic as Black Beauty,My Friend Flicka,or the Walter Farley series. A wonderful read for young(or used to be young) horse lovers.

Grossman reminds his readers of the basic principles of success that can be immediately applied for direct positive results. He couples that with insightful analysis, such as his thoughts on opportunity which he says "will not be labeled 'opportunity.' It will be hidden. You've got to find it" (p. 35). The book is filled with motivational quotes from myriad sources. A lot of the principles he includes are from the Bible. Take for example his admonition on creating your best self. He calls it the law of self-determination and says, "you are now and you will become what you think about" (p. 116). This is from the book of Proverbs. From the New Testament he teaches what he calls the law of compensation and reminds us "as ye sow, so shall ye reap" (p. 116).
Books like this one help a person to stay focused on the way life really works. Near the end of the book, he sums this up by noting "self-esteem is truly a self fulfilling prophecy" (p. 197). This book could do a lot of good for a lot of people if its principles were applied.

If you loved this book another great book is Life's Greatest Lessons: 20 Things That Matter by Hal Urban. Orginally titled 20 Things I Want My Kids To Know, it was originally published in 1992 and is now in the Fourth Edition, and it won Best Self-Published Inspirational Book of the Year 2000 by Writer's Digest Magazine.

It also was written for his children and other people of all ages. It talks about the wisdom of the ages and other life lessons and truths we do not learn in school about how life works and character education for kids, teachers and parents.

It is sure to be a classic that will enrich everyone's life and should be in every home.

THE BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME AS A GIFT. I'M NOT IN THE AUDIO INDUSTRY BUT I FOUND THE BOOK A "FUN" READ. YOU CAN FEEL HOW MUCH THE DAVISES LOVE PEOPLE, THEIR WORK TEACHING AUDIO SEMINARS, TRAVEL IN RV'S FOR OVER 20 YEARS WITH TWO DOGS AND TWO CATS, AND RURAL COUNTRY LIVING WHEN THEY WEREN'T TRAVELING. I AM PROOF THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT AUDIO TO ENJOY THE BOOK.

What a delight to read about people with a passion for audio that seems to consume them and to learn they also love other activities! In our minds the heroes of audio are often placed on high pedestals and viewed as doing only audio. Through the stories in this book we see a fascinatingly different part of their lives. A must read for anyone interested in Heroes of the Audio Industry.

"If Bad Sound Were Fatal, Audio Would Be The Leading Cause Of Death" is easy reading and will fast rewind you through years of audio advancements. This book is about sharing. Don and Carolyn Davis are very tall giants in the world of audio. They founded Syn-Aud-Con thirty years ago. They have spent their lives sharing everything with others while authoring four books. They have shared their wealth of knowledge with students, friends, and colleagues from all over the world. They have shared their family, their friends, their farm, their homes, their pets, their joys, and their love of life in this book. If Bad Sound Were Fatal.... is non-technical and is taken from twenty-five years of their Newsletters, enhanced with current comments and humor. They reveal what it is like to be on-the-road for more than twenty-five years with students, friends, and other audio giants.

"If Bad Sound Were Fatal" delivers a fascinating and often hilarious ride through the lives of Don and Carolyn Davis, creators of Synergetic Audio Concepts (Syn-Aud-Con), the independent audio educational program that has benefited thousands since its founding more than 32 years ago.

The Davises are also co-authors of the seminal text "Sound System Engineering," nearing its third edition release and a technical "go to" resource for generations of audio professionals. ("Sound System Engineering" is available here on Amazon.)

Much of "If Bad Sound Were Fatal" expounds upon the non-technical side of what is shared by Syn-Aud-Con grads, and it offers fascinating anecdotes, projects, theories and communication. There is also a heavy dose of the history of the audio giants, many of whom the Davises knew/know personally during their 50-plus years (and still counting) in the industry.

Audio professionals: Want to understand how we find ourselves here? Want to understand what's come before and therefore, what's down the road? Want to read about two lives that are more well-lived - both inside and outside of the industry - than any fiction writer could possibly concoct?

All you have to do is read the book

"If Bad Sound Were Fatal, Audio Would Be the Leading Cause of Death" is a delightfully entertaining and informative book with photos and graphics. The book does not have even one equation in it!

Don and Carolyn started their career in audio in 1951 with the "Golden Ear" hi-fi store. Don worked with Paul Klipsch and was Vice President of Marketing at Altec Lansing. He was co-inventor of 1/3 octave equalization which is the standard for sound system equalization today. They founded Synergetic Audio Concepts (Syn-Aud-Con) in1973 and over the years have taught thousands of people in the audio field. Through the years they met and worked with many of the audio greats of this century.

There is a chapter called "Don and Carolyn" which they tell about their experiences in watching the audio field grow. Of course any book written by Don and Carolyn Davis wouldn't be complete without stories about their many travels into Russia, Japan, Europe, Australia, and more, their pets, the joys of country living, firearms and, of course, humor. One of my favorite cartoons is of a man with a big smile on his face walking into the office of "Alfonso Construction" with a set of plans under his arm and saying "They took our low bid for that tower at Pisa".

"If Bad Sound Were Fatal, Audio Would Be the Leading Cause of Death" is a book that should be on the desk or in the bookcase of every person that is interested in audio. I highly recommend it.

I am a first year teacher, and I read this book toward the end of the school year. If only I had read it in the beginning! What a fantastic, practical guide for any first year teacher. Proof that you can learn from the experience of others.

Bob Kitchen has written a book containing a recipe for success for beginning and veteran teachers alike. His book is based on 20+ years of teaching and is practical and jargon-free. Bob gets right at the heart of why so many eager educators embark on a career which falls far short of their expectations. In a very accessible, conversational style Bob passes on many lessons - some of which he had to learn the hard way. He covers a wide range of topics from what you need to have in your desk to what to say the first day. His advice concerning dealing with parents, colleagues, administrators and staff members is clear and thoughtful. His anecdotal, conversational style is exactly what teachers regardless of experience need. He manages to pack more information into 94 pages than tiresome books that are much longer. I've taught for 30 years and have this book in my desk - you should too.

A Must for anyone entering the teaching profession!

I have been a teacher for almost 30 years and am delighted watch my daughter enter the profession. After hearing of this book from a colleague at the community college where I do workshops and hearing her recommendation, I bought it and wish I had bought a copy for me, too!

Mr. Kitchen spells out step by step everything you should do when certain things that WILL happen, happen. This is much more straightforward than the theoretical rhetoric that you are spooned in your methods courses.

If you are about to enter the teaching profession, or are still a bit shaky in your first few years, this is a MUST HAVE!

As a teacher and coach, I have found that I learn best how to most effectively improve my own methods by reading about the experiences of those who have been successful. In the field of coaching, there are countless wonderful books by championship coaches whose accounts of their ups and downs are most illuminating. In the field of education, we are woefully lacking. Bob Kitchen's book is a rare first-hand account from a teacher who has observed and absorbed numerous lessons from the front of the classroom -- some positive, some negative -- and all are enlightening to those who have stood in his shoes as a high school teacher. Though I teach math, I find myself wondering how I might incorporate Mr. Kitchen's methods for teaching English into my own curriculum. And his thoughts on discipline and class management certainly provide a valuable resource for teachers of any subject.

To me, the best thing about this book is its honest and analytical reflection of the highlights and lowlights of a tremendously productive teaching career from an author who is not too proud to admit his past mistakes yet not so humble as to hide the secrets to his powerful performance in the classroom. I am a better teacher for reading this book.

This is a great book on late model John Deere equipment from around the world. It is filled with color photos. It describes equipment chronologically and by type. Not only does it discuss agricultural equipment but it covers construction and lawn and garden equipment. There are charts on equipment statistics and it has a large section on the "New Generation of Power". If you are interested in later model Deeres, then I highly recommend this book.
