This novel is spectacular. So intense in places, that I could only read small portions at a time. The richenss of the prose is really great to read. One way of looking at novels is to say that there are two kinds. There are the novels that are all premise, with little attention paid to the actual writing. Kurt Vonnegut is probably the best example of this type of novel. Then there is the opposite, with the quality of the writing in forefront, and the actual story taking a back seat. Don Judson gives us this here, with Bird-Self. Enjoy!

I read "Bird-Self Accumulated" nearly 7 years ago and proclaimed it brilliant. When will we see another work like this from Judson? To the author: please don't let this be a one-hit-wonder. Please, please....more!!

An unsettling, no-holds-barred journey down a reality road that few of us (fortunately) ever travel. Insight into a perspective that most of us never experience, but one that can brutaly and shockingly burst upon us at any time. I found Judson's book both disquieting and fascinating. Read it!

Judson's minimalist poetic prose leads the reader to a sucking black sinkhole in which we find our common selves exposed. His characters repulse, yet we recognize ourselves in them. A brilliant read. What's next from this author?

Only Dostoyevski on his bad days approaches the profound despair that illuminates this book. It asks fundamental human questions, and the answers are always those of nihilism. Yet the characters of the book flame with life, are real and hungry and lusting. They are "workers in the realm of death"just as are the soldiers in Ernst Junger's STORM OF STEEL, the great novel of WW I. But these are just hoods, punks, scum. Though they live, breathe, and want as do the rest of us. The moments pass by like heavy, leaden sentries that guard a secret no one wants to know. But Judson draws us ever nearer the secret in a brilliant, lyric prose that would seem to be totally alien to such a world, yet expresses it perfectly. Hell is a poem. And the wretched, deranged, violent, and angry, are the poets. There are very few books like this in American literature, and it really does take genius to create such a book. We are such stuff as nightmares are made of, and we know it.

Mazzoleni, Now A Star in the Firmament

Review Date: 2006-06-28
Don Mario Mazzoleni before his death was affiliated with Vatican Radio. In this book
his love of God, his purity, compassion, intellect and courage
shine. May this book be reprinted.

The following is one passage from the book:

Fr. Mario Mazzoleni on his decision to become vegetarian (after 3 years as a strict vegetarian, Fr. Mario Mazzoleni speaks of a desire for meat whose trioxypurine is physically addictive. " I would be a hypocrite if I led the reader to believe that I was strong enough to be perfectly faithful to my Lenten resolution. ..I
hadn't yet completely resolved my desire for meat - and so the repressed desire
was floating to the surface. It is a fact that the minute I would sit down to meditate, the most succulent meals would pass in front of my mind, full of fragrant roasted chickens and various sausages. What to do? If I was going to ruin all my meditations for a
roast chicken, it would be better to eliminate the problem by facing it head on. And so after 3 years of strict vegetarianism, I decided to get rid of the desire once and for all by satiating myself with a meat dinner. After all, I told myself to quiet my sense of guilt, "It isn't a crime to eat meat, and I can't say that because I'm vegetarian I'm better than many people who are carnivorous." It was almost a traumatic experience. I remembered an analogous experience of Gandhi's that he recounted in his autobiography. Convinced by a friend that India could be liberated only by the grit
of someone who ate meat, he hid himself on a river bank to consume some barbecued baby goat meat, and the next night he could feel bleating in his chest. Instead of enjoying the coveted snack in peace, the minute this little faithbreaker set his teeth into the cruel repast* (* a reference to Dante's Inferno.. in which
meat is described as a cruel repast in XXXIII.1) he was himself bitten by remorse and anxiety. I kept seeing the animal alive in front of me, and this inhibited the desire that was so enticing when it was simply mental. I immediately noticed some other effects, physical as well as psychic. My intestines held that food much longer than they kept vegetables, and my sense of smell, made sensitive by several years of vegetarianism,
was able to detect the odor of the cooked animal on my skin. It was a disagreeable sensation. As for my psyche, I noticed that my mind, which during my 3 year "Lent" was no longer seriously agitated by unwanted thoughts, suffered a set back from that carne-vale (meat festival); polluting throughts started to enter again in triumph. It
was a lesson. As always it is experience more than words that has the
greater power of persuasion. The decision to adopt a vegetarian diet
was motivated also by a religious actor. I knew that I was going to a sacred place.

Before I read this book I have many questions about the relationship within the teachings and life of Jesus Christ and Sai Baba's. Here, Mario Mazzoleni a catholic priest, tells his personal story with Sai Baba and why he sees in Him the same God that he met as a christian. In simply words, this open-minded priest also tells you the great teachings of Sai Baba. Another MUST-READ for any Sai devotee or anyone wanting to introduce in spirituality. Please, feel free to write me with comments and questions about this book or Sai Baba's teachings.

The universality of Baba is seen in books by American screenwriters, Russian yoga teachers, Italian priests, Brooklyn nuns, San Diego psychiatrist, African Christian. The ocean of Baba can be entered through any one of these books. The translation is by a professor of Romance Languages at Notre Dame. Baba is the first person in history, to my knowledge, to have 30 million (or more) followers (AP said 20 million 15 years ago) who believe him to be an avatar.

I read this book just across of Brindavanam ashram of Sai baba in Whitefield, south India on October - November 2003. I am convinced to the genuine heart of the writer of this book. I too was directly witnessing Sai Baba phenomenon on transforming the hearts of thousands of people in Prasanthi Nilayam ashram in Puttaparty around that time. This book is also a good source to understand Christianity and it is development through time and it's relation with other religions especially the Vedas. Also clearly informed about what's some Vatican high rank persons behavior when discussing spiritual matters. What's laking in this book ( as mentioned as well by the author ) is a special section or chapter on the study of prophecies by sages, holly persons, as well as scriptures of worlds religions which available on at other sources which according to my humble opinion will even support to prove the authenticity of this Avatar of the Age, Sai Baba.

One cannot help but be moved by this personal account of an Italian priest's evolution into a devotee of the India guru, Sathya Baba. Not surprisingly, Mazzoleni's growing loyalty to Sai Baba resulted in his excommunication from the Catholic Church. His dilemmas are authentic; his soul searching is intense.

Watching him embrace Eastern thought is inspiring and fascinating.

One can only wonder what this sincere cleric's response has been to the current torrent of print and media articles classifying Sai Baba as a corrupt pedophile and trickster.

The Contented Achiever is an excellent book that helps us on our journey as to whether we are living the life we truly want! In the back of the book, there is a Self Assessment entitled "Are You a Contented Achiever?" My score told me that this book would absolutely be read next!

The lessons learned about being centered and living in the "now" have greatly impacted my life. The chapter on "Clutter" has created even more satisfaction and peace in my daily life. I ask myself the following question: Are there things that tie me to my past that prevent me from enjoying the present? Try it, you'll experience a wonderful sense of letting go and enjoying life more!

I believe that The Contented Achiever stands out in the crowd of books on self-improvement. I found this book to be thought-provoking, positive and creative. The Contented Achiever has a large number of creative suggestions which I found to be directly applicable to my life. I get the impression that the authors' beliefs are based on a profound knowledge of their subject gathered over a life-time. There are also great, well-positioned quotes to reinforce good points made throughout the book.

My favorite subjects pertained to "Creating Desired Results" which is a very simple series of steps to use to become the person you are striving to become. I found suggestions about dealing with clutter to be very practical and a chapter about "Creating an Environment for Success" to be insightful and especially thought-provoking. I also believe that the book would be especially useful to anyone experiencing some personal, or professional frustration in his/her life.

I highly recommend The Contented Achiever to those people interested in personal, or professional improvement. The simple, straightforward style used by the authors will make the book a refreshing and enjoyable experience.

I enjoyed this book so much that I got several copies to give away to friends. It was humorous, nostalgic, thought-provoking, cathartic and inspiring.

Not since I read Co-Dependent No More have I had a more graphic awakening to my own reality. This book provided me with a plethora of labels to apply to many dysfunctional life-situations and thereby provided many clues to personal problem-solving answers.

Even though I already know I am an extremely organized individual, still, I learned many new ideas to experiment with in my constant quest for even better methods for pursuit of a productive life both physically and emotionally. No one could read this book without coming away with something new to think about.

Big Boxes can hold many miracles...don't miss Chapter 6.

Rush, rush, rush. Push, push, push. Gotta achieve. Gotta make it! Life is complicated, but that's the fun. Go go go!

So is this what achievement is all about? Not really, say these authors. There's a system for success, and it's simple. In fact, simplicity in life is part of the magic. But it all starts inside. As the book explains, "what's in the well comes up in the bucket."

This is an interesting book because it's written by three authors-three people who have "been there, done that, and taught others." But the book is written in the singular. The authors realized that their ideas were bouncing all over the place, so they engaged a writer to "harmonize them into one voice." Clever idea, but a little unnerving at times, knowing that there are three people behind the message.

Readers will begin the journey through this book by Defining Success. Chapter 2 talks about Creating Desired Results, with the obligatory four-quadrant model. The dimensions of this one are Failure and Success, Frustration and Fulfillment. The Impact of Thoughts, Words, and Actions is explored in the third chapter. Values are addressed in a chapter entitled "Reflecting on Your Belief System" before an advisory chapter on getting clutter out of your life. The balance of the book focuses on creating an environment for success. It's a "typical" self-help book, but well put together.

Extra features include the inspirational quotes you might expect, sprinkled through the pages. A 19-question assessment at the back of the book serves as a summary, but could also be taken before reading the book as a sort of benchmark. The Points to Ponder at the end of each chapter add value to this book, moving the reader from absorption of good advice to a pensive and self-reflection mode to stimulate progress.

I would have given this book 5 stars, but I couldn't because of the editing errors...so I gave it 4 stars.

Don has some interesting strategies and ideas that even after reading a number of books on Craps had never heard of. I like his style of play and the book really does give some great insight in how to play the game at a lower betting level and giving yourself a better chance at winning. We all know there's no way to beat Craps, but there are some effective ideas that Don presents that can give you fighting hope on a regular basis!

Overall, good book, good ideas, worth the money, and 4 stars instead of 5 because of lousy editing.

I must give this guy a "5 STAR" review! This book is a tremendous insight to keeping the house advantage to a minimum. I intend to bring this book with me the next time i'm gambling so I am able to perfect his technique. The book is easy to read (I finished it on a lazy Sunday afternoon) and makes you excited to try out the strategies. It is my opinion that Mr. Favero should follow up this book with a sequel, if possible. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

I had the pleasure of playing craps with the author at the Rio several years ago. He is a true professional, and the book is well-written and a steal for the money. My game is internet poker, however it's fun to mix it up some in the casino setting. This book is complete with strategy and examples, but I also love the book from the gambling life-style point of view. Favero is not only an outstanding craps player, but he has taught his family and many others the finer points of the game and gambling theory; for his daughter is OUTSTANDING craps player in her own right and developing into an excellent and profitable Texas Hold'em player. I look forward to buying this man a beer! Highly recommended - Grinder

Disorganized, but a good read

I'm a novice craps player (my typical goal is to break even long enough to burn the casino for a couple of free drinks), and I was looking for a concise text that explains some basic low-limit strategies beyond pass/don't pass betting. Don provides a number of understandable guidelines for minimizing one's risk as a low limit player and achiving modest profits and casino comps. This is not a book on statistical probabilities or game theory by any stretch, but rather a novice-to-moderate player's guide to surviving at the craps table, understanding the game as a whole and having fun.

The book's only downside is the editing, or lack thereof. There are typface inconsistencies that are kind of jarring, and serious copyediting errors. Also, the book is poorly organized. For example, the primer on craps rules and betting is at the end, but terms from that chapter are used in the preceding chapters. Some of Don's personal stories within the strategy chapters are humorous, but often are non sequiturs to the lessons themselves and break up the book's flow.

Granted, I'm in the publishing business by trade, so I'm OCD about some of these editing details that others won't care about. On the whole, Mr. Favero has done an exceptional job of getting logical craps strategies into the hands of casual players like me. I'm looking forward to applying his lessons in a few weeks in upstate New York.

This book is so cute. My son covers his ears as the part where Dandelion is not recognized by Jennifer the giraffe, in anticipation of his roaring voice. Another super book by Don Freeman. I wish there were more classic books like this one and his other books. It seems as though they have a moral to them and in this one, it's just to be yourself. Isn't that what we need to be teaching our children in these times? We read them over and over and I don't growl about it, I enjoy the books as well.

The text is really, really funny and will hold their attention easily through multiple readings at a sitting. My daughter's favorite thing to do is lean forward and kiss the "cootie bug" that the author instructs children not to! We have A LOT of books at our house, and this one is probably the most frequently read.

Don't Call Me Mother: Breaking the Chain of Mother-Daughter Abandonment is a poignant story on several different levels. It's such a compelling memoir, you have to keep reminding yourself that it isn't fiction. The raw emotions and the bare truth of the story pull you into a drama that no child should experience. It's a testimonial to Linda Joy's strength of character that she could survive such an experience let alone re-live it again to tell her story.

Her prose is so poetic, at times you think you're reading poetry. In addition to being a fine author, Linda Joy is a therapist illuminating the spiritual growth that comes from compassion, forgiveness, perseverance, and the courage that can be born of such a tragic childhood.

The driving force behind the book is the hope that the chain of abandonment cycling through the generations can finally be broken. Don't Call Me Mother should be read by anyone who has experienced abandonment, divorce, or living with mental illness; however, the book stands on its own as an unforgettable story.

I had the privilige of hearing Ms Myers speak recently and was touched by her incredible empathy and understanding for people who have suffered abandonment and abuse in their childhood. Though the memoir genre is overpopulated by stories of Hollywood stars and the like, regaling us with their secrets, Ms Myers' account of three generations of mother-daughter abandonment and her quest to heal the rupture in her family reads more like a lyrical and sensitive novel than a true-life story. Poetic and evocative in its depiction of Ms Myers' incarnations as a child struggling to withstand the tempestous damage of mental illness; a young woman seeking the truth buried amidst family secrets; and of a strong-willed mother and grandmother fighting to reshape the future out of the past, this is a book that touches all of us, whether or not we have suffered the same. Healing and powerful in its message while never being self-indulgent, "Don't Call Me Mother" is a testament to the resiliency and courage of those who seek to make peace with themselves and discover truth through their losses.

As a women's memoir writing teacher and coach, I read memoirs to find exemplars for my classes. I recently read the excellent Don't Call Me Mother: Breaking the Chain of Mother-Daughter Abandonment by Linda Joy Myers. Her compelling life story is written as a series of vignettes that reveal a multi-generational pattern of abandonment and eventual healing. Myers, a marriage and family therapist, writes in the voice of the first person speaking in the present tense. If you are writing, or interested in writing, your memoir, consult this book to understand the dramatic impact on the reader of this voice and tense combination. From the author's perspective, Myers says the choice "forced me to integrate the self that I was with the witness I have become." You'll also notice the importance of trains in her life, representing separations and reunions, new ventures and returning home. If you are working on your memoir, consider if there has been a thread running through your life that could be woven into your memoir. Myers, also an artist, creates vitality and vividness in the people and places she shares with us through the use of color descriptors. What passions do you have - gardening, sports, cooking, art, music - that might enhance the telling of your story?

I strongly recommend this book as a "good read" if you struggle with the mother-daughter relationship in your life. I also highly recommend this book for the insights it offers into writing your memoir.

This was not quite what I thought it was but it was enjoyable, if that is the appropriate term for a book that causes one to cry or reflect on familial relationships. I have been surprised to learn how many women end up in circumstances in which they have effectively, if not actually, been abandoned by their mothers. I gave a copy to my daughter and loaned mine to a friend who I learned had been placed for adoption because her mother didn't want more children.

Pam Johnson's "Secret Society Of Happy People" is one of the most unique and yet simple ideas I have ever heard of. Unlike so many other "feel-good" authors of today, she does not suggest that we deny our true feelings or the unhappy realities of this world, but to make a point of expressing our feelings of happiness as and when they arise -- without feeling guilty or inappropriate for doing so. There is a good chance that we are all a lot happier than we think we are! This book also raises awareness of how we allow other people's negativity to zap the happiness right out of our lives. "Don't Even Think of Raining On My Parade: Adventures of the Secret Society of Happy People." chronicles the author's diligent and courageous undertaking to bring acceptance back to the concept of feeling good. It's a wonderful read.

Fans of suspense thrillers and true crime, all women everywhere from 8 to 80 will find the hair on the back of their necks standing on end reading "Don't Just Sit There." Men who read this book will get a tiny glimpse into the atrocities perpetrated on women across the country everyday. Not only is this an intense, page turning read, the message can not be over emphaszed. Easily something within the pages of this book could literally save your life, or that of someone you love. What more motivation could you need to read it?

L.A. Wilson has given the reader a front row seat into the ordeal that changed her life. Based on factual events, the book relates the horrific kidnapping, sexual assualt and her six month journey through the system. From that awful night she was abducted at knife point til the jury foreman read the verdict, she shares it all. An engrossing and unflinching story that took me on a roller coater ride of emotions. Fear, anger, determination, combined with healing, finding new love, a little humor amid the horror, and finally stepping into the dawn of a new day as a new woman.....

Wilson refused to be victimized in silence and with this powerful book, she compels others, to fight for the justice they deserve. "Don't Just Sit There" has opened my eyes and touched my soul in profound ways. I commend Ms. Wilson for her courage. The same strength and grace that sustained her through this ordeal is conveyed to the reader in her words. This is one of those very rare books that stays in your mind long after it has been returned to the shelf. Which is a testament to the power of the story, as well as, the expert way it was crafted and delivered.

Happy Reading!

*Personal Note:
Many victims of violent crime feel they have no where to turn and no one understands. If you are one of the 1000's of women whose lives have been forever altered by such senseless acts of violence please read Don't Just Sit There. It could very well be the first steps on the road to healing and regaining control of your life.

Although a heinous crime takes place in DJST, this is not the basic "true crime" novel. That makes revealing the ending acceptable in a review. This reader was truly gratified that the bad guy got nailed and sent to the slammer. The story line is quite straightforward: The female author, who worked in a Houston bar, is raped late one night upon her return home from work. She was abducted from her own parking lot and driven to a nearby remote location. That one fact may be difficult for a New Yorker to grasp since "remote locations" here are so scarce. The young lady has the extreme presence of mind to plant evidence (!) in her perpetrator's car. She did so by leaving her prints on a beer bottle and rolling up her panty hose under the passenger seat! How did she stay so calm? She then has the spunk to produce-on her own-WANTED posters of her attacker and distribute them. All the while, she holds her job and maintains as normal a personal life as possible. That is the heartening soul of the story. The bad guy easily falls into the stupid criminal department. He is caught quite quickly, more so, I'm sure, than the typical rapist. It helped that he "assisted" in his own capture and conviction. Justice in the form of a solid prison sentence follows. This reviewer would add one recommendation, especially for females but they apply to guys as well: NEVER get in a car with an abductor. Fight on the spot but resist at all costs. Scream "FIRE!" rather than "HELP" or "RAPE". That item was NOT intended to second -guess the victim. DJST is an inspiring story of determination and especially steadfastness in the very face of danger. One does not have to be female to enjoy reading it. This reviewer has the distinct opinion that were he to be in a tight spot, he'd like the calm and collected authoress with him.

I liked this book, it is a neat little story about taking matters
into your own hands and fighting back. Although it was not as
dramatic and inspiring as another book I recently read about survivors, A Reason To Live: The True Story of One Woman's Love, Courage and Determination To Survive, I do recommend it as interesting reading. It is time all of us take a stand against these sexual perverts, and this book is a good manual for that.

I HAD TO READ IT TWICE!

I really enjoyed reading this story, about the horrifying experience this woman went through with the assault against her, and the things that she did to not only catch the vicious criminal, but to prove to a jury that they had not been out on a date. These things took a lot of smarts and a lot of courage.

This book could help a lot of women in the event of an assault against them.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to every woman out there. Some of the information contained in it might save your life. I liked it so much...I read it twice.

LA Wilson does a great job of telling a true and horrifying story of being raped. This woman had the sense to grab up
evidence such as nylon hose, shell casings, and items found in the car during her terrifying experience. Her intelligence by doing this helped to find the rapist. This book needs to be read by all women to understand that any guy hanging around, seen or unseen is a threat to her safety. What is even more astonishing is that after this guy violates her, he has the audacity to keep trying to make conatct with her. I am amazed at Wilson's strength and fortitude. I look forward to reading more of her writing. The story also shows how teamwork pays off, when people (not just women) look out for each other, especially when suspects are released from jail or prison.
Good job, Lisa! Go get 'em!

Full of fun facts and humorous illustrations, this is an excellent introduction to the Presidents as well as a useful review tool for those of us who, ahem, already learned this stuff. I used it to get ready for a Jeopardy! appearance, and it served me well. I also recommend it as a helpful supplement to younger students as a painless way to fix each President firmly into place!

This is an educational book that tells you about the presidents in a fun way. It gives interesting facts about their lives; like, for example, did you know George Washington's dentures were made of elephant and walrus tusks, cow, hippo, and even human teeth?! This book includes important dates, events, and timelines. Great illustrations. I would highly recommend you read this book for knowledge, and a few laughs!

My 8-year-old daughter has literally memorized this book. I think what's so engaging are the quirky facts and the way they're presented. She has now asked me to get her any books I come across by Kenneth Davis. What more can you ask for: a book that is so educational but one that kids will read over and over, all of their own initiative.
