My Two Hands, My Two Feet is two books in one. You read about hands one way through to half the book then you flip the book over and the other side is about feet.

The words rhyme and are simple to follow. The illustrations are bright and colorful.

Makes a great storybook to read to your little ones or easy enough for those that have been reading for a little while to read themselves.

Most nights and naps at least one of my twin daughters will pull out "Hands, Feet" as the book is known in our house. They love to wiggle, kick and stretch their hands and feet along with the girls in the story.

The story is quick and simple for them to understand. They get great big grins on their faces when they move along with the story. I don't mind reading this story to them at least once each day; their giggles and grins are reward enough.

Two Thumbs Up!

My 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 year old girls love this book so much that my only complaint is that it's not a sturdy board book. The rhymes are simple and fun and the illustrations are interesting and unique. If I had a nickel for every time I've had to read this book...

I'm 19 years old, I have to say that Laziness has become a true way of life for me. I got my copy of "Master the Grill the Lazy Way" yesterday afternoon, and it's already become my cooking bible. The book itself is absolutely histerical, and the recipes are remarkable -- both tastey and easy. The writers are truely fantastic people, and I aspire to be as Lazy as they are some day.

Master the Grill the Lazy Way?? How can you grill in any manner other than the hard, hot, messy way? By reading this book!! Grilling is made as simple and clear as possible and is interspersed with humor, quick timely tips, do's and don'ts - It's the best cookbook I have had in my hands (and I have a TON of them) in a long time - you can actually sit down and read it - not just skim thru it. Worth EVERY PENNY!!!!

This is the cookbook you can count on for authentic, trustworthy recipes. Such a good variety of every ethnic favorite-this is the one cookbook I own that is worn to a frazzle!

A great cookbook that reveals a variety of ethnic recipes.

I was very pleased to see recipes from all sides of my heritage (English, Norwegian, Croatian, and German). This book possesses recipes that my family has used for years along with new variations. I was thrilled to receive this gift from my mother. It's nice to see that as my generation grows older we can still utilize the cooking ideas of years past.

Almost the only cookbook you'd ever need!

I had to laugh when one reviewer mentioned that her copy of this cookbook was "worn to a frazzle"! That describes mine to a "T"! I have a paperback version and each page is now loose and just tucked in there...sometimes out of order, but in there nonetheless. It's the cookbook I reach for when I want an authentic and excellent recipe for all those wonderful ethnic dishes. Almost every recipe you can think of is in there whether you're Scandinavian, German, Cuban, Jewish or many, many others. Potato Dumplings to Psari Plake (Greek fish dish), Tourtiere (French Canadian meat pie) to Plum Pudding. Someday I'll have to buy the hardcover edition...and start messing up all those favorite pages with flour, etc. all over again!

I always enjoy reading a book by an author I have never read before. Its nice not to have any expectations based on previous work, nothing to compare it to, so when I sat down to read Hand Me Downs, The Secrets I was very eager to get to "know" this author, through her words and character construction. From the first chapter I was not disappointed, the opening scene with Daniel and the Doctor just made my heart ache. Ms. Balmer's style of writing flows like a steady stream with only the situations in the story itself to change the direction of the current but not disrupt the flow itself.

If it was the author's intention to make you feel strong hate, compassion, exasperation, and hopelessness she did a fantastic job. I have to admit that this was not a book I could sit down and read in one sitting, although normally a book of this size would be finished in a day. I kept having to stop either because I was very angry or bordering on depressed. The fullness of the characters made me feel as if I were actually there, watching what was going on and I just wanted to shout.....Wake up Daniel!! Get a grip Hildy!!! I cannot recall a book character I have hated more than Bobby Ray, and I have read a LOT of books in my life. I wanted to castrate the man with a rusty knife.

Though my sense of humor may be different from a lot of other people, there were spots of humor that gave my anger a break and for that I'm most appreciative to Ms. Balmer. A person can only take so much heartache and despair and she certainly put humor in, in most needed places to help me be able to momentarily forget my hatred of Bobby Ray (I believe I have mentioned that she wrote him so profoundly well that I abhor him, but did I mention I wanted to castrate the man with a rusty knife more than I did John Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility, or more than Black Jack Randall from Outlander.)

The book gives me a whole different view of the time period my grandparents grew up in. I've always known the depression existed, I've known the things my grandparents did without and had to make do with....but this brought a lot of it home for me, someone that has never "wanted" for anything that was "needed" in her life. As a genealogist, it gives me a much more fuller picture of the statistics and facts I see on census pages and court documents.

I can honestly say that the ending definitely gives the much needed hope for healing and closure that I, as a reader, searched for, and leaves you wanting more, in a good way.

Gripping family saga! No idle praise required!

Joy Shannon Balmer captures the subtle nuances of a troubled Southern family; a group connected by love and tragedy. The family saga spans three generations, miggled with the flow of dark, hidden secrets lurking just below the surface. To read this book is to delve into the complexity of human emotions and drives. Joy Shannon Balmer is an author whose work I will follow. A rich, rewarding read!

Why haven't I read Heritage Writing before this?

When my walking partner told me that the president of one of the Northwest's largest writing organizations keeps Heritage Writing on her desk to tell people about, I thought, "Why haven't I seen this book before?" So I got it and just could not read it all the way through because after a few pages I had to start writing. Then I read it in the commercials, but had to get out some paper and a pen and write some more. I finally finished the whole book, but I still reread parts and use the lists over and over. I love this book. As a result of using it, I have a whole bunch of little stories written. Not only that, but they're even organized like the author suggests, so that I can find whichever one I'm looking for.

Learned more than I thought.

Heritage Writing, besides being an interesting book to read, is a great reference book to keep around. It makes me want to write stories about my own childhood and about my parents--which is good, because I'm making them into little booklets to give to the children and grandchildren for Christmas presents. Heritage Writing sends me off in so many directions and makes me try writing in so many areas and from different points of view that I am amazed, especially since I didn't used to write personal things, certainly not about my own life. When I've given Heritage Writing as a gift, the recipients have told me several times how much they like it and use it. Good book! I like it very much.

Jeff Usher has put together an inspirational guide not only for coaches in faith based youth athletic programs, but for mentors of children who are guided by faith themselves.
"Take Them By the Hand" is a useful pragmatic tool for coaches of youth athletics. Usher recounts how he did not know the game of soccer at all when he began coaching children some 20 years ago, but shares with his readers very useful and pragmatic drills, exercises and coaching strategies of great value to youth coaches regardless of whether its a church league or a secular program.
But for Christian based faith leagues this book is simply a must. Usher poignantly outlines the role his faith has played in bringing him to the this ministry and the more important role it plays in childrens' lives when they are exposed to the Word in conjunction with athletics. These lessons are funny, touching and most importantly spirtually inspiring. Even if you are not a coach now, you will think about it after reading this book. If you are a coach, you will be more inspired to continue, and better able to play a positive role in the enrichment of the children you are entrusted with.
Finally, this book is a valuable tool for mentors of youth whatever the activity is. In the same vein of Tim Russert's "Wisdom of our Fathers" and Denzel Washington's book on mentors, Usher underlines the positive influence adults can have on the lives of children when they commit themselves to caring for and nurturing others.
Be prepared to laugh, cry and feel your own spirit grow. Be prepared to be inspired. This is a wonderful, wonderful book.

MOTHER/DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIPS RUN AMOK....
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-08
This is a novel the will keep the reader turning its pages. First published in 1980, the author received glowing reviews, and the book became a Literary Guild selection. I read it shortly after it was published and remember having enjoyed it then. I recently pulled it off my book shelf and decided to read it again. Am I ever glad that I did, as I enjoyed just as much the second time around. Time has not diminished this well-written novel in terms of its power to entertain the reader.

This book is a multi-generational family saga. It begins in Poland, where an ambitious woman named Malka is misunderstood by her family and her community. Forced to marry a man that she does not love, Malka tries to make the most of the hand that she has been dealt. She has a number of children, looking to them for vindication of her ambitions. Unfortunately, Malka has a side of her that is cold and calculating, some might even say evil. When she migrates to America with her husband and children, she sees her dreams and hopes vanish before her very eyes. One by one her children disappear from her life, with the exception of Helen, whom Malka neglected and ignored her entire life, having deemed her to be ordinary.

Helen gets married to a man named Lenny and has three daughters, one of whom reminds her of her mother. This daughter, Marilyn, is reminiscent of Malka in many ways. She is also definitely a Daddy's girl and knows how to play her father like a fiddle, much to Helen's growing consternation. Helen, however, is more like her mother Malka than she realizes. This does not bode well for a warm mother/daughter relationship. There is a deep disaffection between these two. The book details the odd relationship between Helen and Marilyn, as well as the relationship that Helen has with each of her other two daughters, Phyllis and Natalie. It shows how Helen, as did Malka, would stop at nothing to achieve her ambitions. It also shows how Marilyn comes to terms with being who she is.

The book is a funny, clever, and totally enjoyable, bittersweet novel, which details the ups and downs of this crazy, mixed up family that is like so many other families.

A Book For Overcomers!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-08
Don't let negative emotions keep you from living abundantly. This book shows you how you can overcome the negatives of your past and get on to living a life of goodness and mercy.

The author admits he is an overcomer himself. He says he overcame depression through humor, work, and exercise. He adds, "I have found that depression does not have to be debilitating. It can be managed and minimized so that its power is not so all-consuming." A person who is emotionally detached can help a depressed person gain a healthy, truthful perspective.

He talks about taking guilt away from victims of depression. Consider the question he asks, "We need to ask ourselves if we would suggest only spiritual help for someone suffering from any other inherited illness, physical injury, or biochemical imbalance." He says getting medical help for depression does not go against the Scriptures.

This book is right on target in offering steps to deliverance from depression and showing you how to take each baby step in the journey. Read it. It will bring health and healing if you follow its advice.
