The current favorite of my 20 month old twinsReview Date: 2007-09-12
The story is quick and simple for them to understand. They get great big grins on their faces when they move along with the story. I don't mind reading this story to them at least once each day; their giggles and grins are reward enough.

A Definite Must-Read!!!Review Date: 2007-11-04
I cannot say enough good things about this bookReview Date: 2007-09-17
If it was the author's intention to make you feel strong hate, compassion, exasperation, and hopelessness she did a fantastic job. I have to admit that this was not a book I could sit down and read in one sitting, although normally a book of this size would be finished in a day. I kept having to stop either because I was very angry or bordering on depressed. The fullness of the characters made me feel as if I were actually there, watching what was going on and I just wanted to shout.....Wake up Daniel!! Get a grip Hildy!!! I cannot recall a book character I have hated more than Bobby Ray, and I have read a LOT of books in my life. I wanted to castrate the man with a rusty knife.
Though my sense of humor may be different from a lot of other people, there were spots of humor that gave my anger a break and for that I'm most appreciative to Ms. Balmer. A person can only take so much heartache and despair and she certainly put humor in, in most needed places to help me be able to momentarily forget my hatred of Bobby Ray (I believe I have mentioned that she wrote him so profoundly well that I abhor him, but did I mention I wanted to castrate the man with a rusty knife more than I did John Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility, or more than Black Jack Randall from Outlander.)
The book gives me a whole different view of the time period my grandparents grew up in. I've always known the depression existed, I've known the things my grandparents did without and had to make do with....but this brought a lot of it home for me, someone that has never "wanted" for anything that was "needed" in her life. As a genealogist, it gives me a much more fuller picture of the statistics and facts I see on census pages and court documents.
I can honestly say that the ending definitely gives the much needed hope for healing and closure that I, as a reader, searched for, and leaves you wanting more, in a good way.

"Take Them By the Hand" is a useful pragmatic tool for coaches of youth athletics. Usher recounts how he did not know the game of soccer at all when he began coaching children some 20 years ago, but shares with his readers very useful and pragmatic drills, exercises and coaching strategies of great value to youth coaches regardless of whether its a church league or a secular program.
But for Christian based faith leagues this book is simply a must. Usher poignantly outlines the role his faith has played in bringing him to the this ministry and the more important role it plays in childrens' lives when they are exposed to the Word in conjunction with athletics. These lessons are funny, touching and most importantly spirtually inspiring. Even if you are not a coach now, you will think about it after reading this book. If you are a coach, you will be more inspired to continue, and better able to play a positive role in the enrichment of the children you are entrusted with.
Finally, this book is a valuable tool for mentors of youth whatever the activity is. In the same vein of Tim Russert's "Wisdom of our Fathers" and Denzel Washington's book on mentors, Usher underlines the positive influence adults can have on the lives of children when they commit themselves to caring for and nurturing others.
Be prepared to laugh, cry and feel your own spirit grow. Be prepared to be inspired. This is a wonderful, wonderful book.

MOTHER/DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIPS RUN AMOK....Review Date: 2003-06-08
This book is a multi-generational family saga. It begins in Poland, where an ambitious woman named Malka is misunderstood by her family and her community. Forced to marry a man that she does not love, Malka tries to make the most of the hand that she has been dealt. She has a number of children, looking to them for vindication of her ambitions. Unfortunately, Malka has a side of her that is cold and calculating, some might even say evil. When she migrates to America with her husband and children, she sees her dreams and hopes vanish before her very eyes. One by one her children disappear from her life, with the exception of Helen, whom Malka neglected and ignored her entire life, having deemed her to be ordinary.
Helen gets married to a man named Lenny and has three daughters, one of whom reminds her of her mother. This daughter, Marilyn, is reminiscent of Malka in many ways. She is also definitely a Daddy's girl and knows how to play her father like a fiddle, much to Helen's growing consternation. Helen, however, is more like her mother Malka than she realizes. This does not bode well for a warm mother/daughter relationship. There is a deep disaffection between these two. The book details the odd relationship between Helen and Marilyn, as well as the relationship that Helen has with each of her other two daughters, Phyllis and Natalie. It shows how Helen, as did Malka, would stop at nothing to achieve her ambitions. It also shows how Marilyn comes to terms with being who she is.
The book is a funny, clever, and totally enjoyable, bittersweet novel, which details the ups and downs of this crazy, mixed up family that is like so many other families.

A Book For Overcomers!Review Date: 2003-11-08
The author admits he is an overcomer himself. He says he overcame depression through humor, work, and exercise. He adds, "I have found that depression does not have to be debilitating. It can be managed and minimized so that its power is not so all-consuming." A person who is emotionally detached can help a depressed person gain a healthy, truthful perspective.
He talks about taking guilt away from victims of depression. Consider the question he asks, "We need to ask ourselves if we would suggest only spiritual help for someone suffering from any other inherited illness, physical injury, or biochemical imbalance." He says getting medical help for depression does not go against the Scriptures.
This book is right on target in offering steps to deliverance from depression and showing you how to take each baby step in the journey. Read it. It will bring health and healing if you follow its advice.

Makes a great storybook to read to your little ones or easy enough for those that have been reading for a little while to read themselves.
