A good basic vegan cookbook for the health-conscious cook
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-07
The emphasis in this book is good nutrition with a vegan approach. The author teaches a whole type of cooking based on whole foods, dairy & egg substitutes, texturized vegetable protein (TVP), and a low-fat diet. I found the recipes simple and rewarding. This is a really good book to use as a main source of recipes for a vegan household. Each recipe provides calorie, fiber, sodium, protein, fat, and cholesterol analysis for people on restricted diets. A 20-page section at the end of the book on General Nutritional Information is useful for basic information. This is followed by a Glossary of Ingredients and Remedies which will explain some of the more exotic vegan foods to the uninitiated.

I found this book easy to read, easy to understand and easy to follow. It enlightened me on which food groups to eat and when. Although it is a 35 day diet, and I only made it through the first 17 days, I still lost a whopping 14 pounds!!! This book also shows, how to eat right without being on the designated diet. So, at anytime you may deviate from it, choose supplemental foods, or go on your own. I did find the recipes in this book a little expensive and that you would benefit greatly if you lived near a store which sold fresh fruit, so you can buy it daily. The concept of the diet can be used day to day even if you're not dieting. This book is a great start to eating right. It has a daily motivational reading, that keeps you interested and helps you keep shedding those pounds. You can eat steak, baked potatos, butter, corn on the cob, and much more!!

This is a good workbook for introducing sentence-combining into a high school English class. The first half of the book uses sentence combining to introduce/review the writing process, offering students "invitations" to write based on the exercises. The exercises themselves are often topical, and the writing invitations generally ask students to write about themselves and their experiences. The second half of the book uses sentence combining to review grammar, including the parts of speech, usage, clauses and phrases, and punctuation.

My only criticism of the Toolbox is that it is perhaps too ambitious. By trying to be all things, I felt it does not provide enough depth, especially about the writing process (compared to, say, Writers Inc). Of course, if you wish to use it as a supplement to your classroom instruction, it is more than sufficient.

Excellent Book For Anyone Living With Chrohn's Disease

I paid 35 cents plus shipping and the book came like it is brand new condition. It is an outdated version but I had no intentions of paying the price for the updated one. Anyone living with chrohn's as myself should read it. I get the Chrohn's newsletters and keep up with anything that comes out for Chrohn's. Anyone with Chrohn's knows there is never enough information we can get on this dreadful disease. If anyone does purchase this book the author does have his own website. Do not hesitate to purchase used books from this company, there better than good in shipping and price on there books.

Would recommend this book. Received shipment quickly.

"Patient Heal Thyself" is the story of Jordan Rubin's recovery from Crohn's disease and how improving his diet played a role. It is a great guide to understanding how to attain better health. This book contains a lot of information on diet that is not mentioned in other books such as fermented foods and the good organisms found in soil. It is a good book to read to help bolster your knowledge of health and diet. I applaud the author on his writing achievement; however, I found it disturbing when he promotes his own company's supplements in this book.

"Patient Heal Thyself" is a good read and has much to teach, if you can get past the promotion for Jordan Rubin's products.

There is helpful, useful information in this book.
Now I want the author to write a similar book about the GenoType diet and food combining.

I liked the way this book was written as you also had the benefit of someone else's experience, not just the author's information.

This is my first experience with food combining, and bought this book because of the blood type connection.

Not Food Combined

Review Date: 2007-12-27
I was very excited to find this book as it combined the two approaches to eating that I find supportive. However, while the author shows charts and diagrams that explain food combining, the recipes and meal plans she provides are far from following food combining guidelines. I was dumbfounded by this inconsistency. While writing that food combining's basic tenant is to avoid mixing protein and carbohydrates, the suggested breakfast is an egg and toast! The references for food combining are excellent but the practical day to daya advice for implementing a food-combined/blood-typed diet should be avoided.

Blood Type Diet and Lupus

Review Date: 2004-02-25
I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus in 1988. The only solution for my problems was to take antibiotics, steroids and Quianine (sp?) for the skin rash. All of these drugs caused other problems and never made me feel better. In 1999, I began the blood type diet and today I am healthier than I have ever been. I have energy, I never take prescription drugs and I exercise everyday. I take supplements, follow the diet and do accupuncture to keep my system strong and healthy. The people who don't follow the diet continue to be ill and progressively get worse. Many have died...and that is unnecessary. If you have Lupus and are looking for answers TRY this book. What can it hurt? You have probably tried everything else with limited success.

GOOD RECIPES, GREAT CONCEPT
Helpful Votes: 44 out of 45 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-08
The strong points of this book are the concept of blood type and diet, and the nutritious recipes. Whether one is trying to lose or maintain weight, or simply choosing their foods more carefully because they are health conscious, the book is beneficial. This book, like Dr. Peter D'Adamo's "Eat Right" series is based on the concept of eating right for your blood type.

The downside of the book is that I found some parts contradictory and the book just did not come together as anticipated. The reader may be confused by some of the combination of foods. Overall, it is a book worth reading because the concept of blood type and diet is sound; however, my preference on the topic of blood type and diet is still Dr. D'Adamo's books ("Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type, Cook Right 4 Your Blood Type and Live Right 4 Your Blood Type") they are all absolutely superb and highly recommended.

Khader proves it again!

Dina Khader's first published book is a long-awaited gem. Her earlier work crafting the recipes for Peter D'Adamo's now-classic "Eat Right 4 Your Type" has evolved as her experience and precision have grown. This work is a must read for those desiring a comfortable change to their diets with radically effective results. Khader's delicious recipes and compelling writing will satisfy the most doubtful critic. Following her suggestions, I have greatly improved my circulation and lost several minor ailments. This contribution to the field of nutrition literature is an important launching point for an increasingly important voice in the field. Read this book, apply its lessons and feel good again.

The third edition of Sentence Combining just arrived. I can't wait to get to class Monday to start my students on these exercises! William Strong wrote another book about writing development, Coaching Writing, that I purchased at a writing workshop. The discussion of sentence combining as a development technique excited my teaching, but I don't have time (or energy) to prepare sentences for use with the technique. Sentence Combining fills that slot perfectly. This activity greatly improved my student's ability to revise their writing. They were able to see that revision is a process. For some it was a true "ah ha!" moment! The techique I found in the first section of Coaching Writing is the focus of Sentence Combining A Composing Book. I can't praise these two books enough. Every English teacher at my high school has heard me praise William Strong's work, and several have adopted his strategies. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

The most overpriced book I have ever seen!

Sentence Combining Third Edition is the most overpriced book I have ever seen! The price of text books, or any book commonly used in college class rooms, are overpriced in my opinion and this is admittedly a pet peeve of mine, but this book is the worst! I was distraught about the price when I first saw it but didn't think too much about it since it is, I thought, a text book. After I bought it and started using it I became incredibly upset about the price. It is arguably not a text book it is just a collection of short stories chopped up into short, single line sentences that students are suppose to combine into reasonable length sentences. The idea is fine and the theory is probably a good one (though incredibly boring to do in my opinion) but this is the type of book that would serve perfectly well, better in my opinion, on inexpensive paper with an inexpensive binding. It would serve much better if it were made and sold inexpensively enough to not feel bad about marking up and highlighting right in the book; something I wouldn't think of doing in a $30 book of only 235 pages. The one good thing about this book is that it has finally gotten me to actually speaking out and, hopefully doing something about the ridiculous price of text books changed students who can little afford to bear the financial burden of keeping text book publishers profits high. On top of that the smallest possible amount of change is made practically every year and the new edition does nothing except make all previous editions outdated so you can't keep your books in good condition and pass them on to younger siblings or friends. As you can tell I am upset about the amount of money a student must put out for books, but I am considerably more upset about having to put out $30 for Sentence Combining than I am about having to put out $155 for my math textbook. At least the math text is about 1000 pages and used every day. Sentence Combining is, as I mentioned, 235 pages and used less that once a week, AND we are already a third of the way through it and much less than a third of the way through the semester. OK, enough, if you can borrow it from the library or a friend I'd certainly do it. You probably won't need it more than an hour or less a week.

An excellent resource for sentence composing and editing

This book is a classic now, and it should be. Research in writing instruction has demonstrated that students who work on sentence combining do improve as writers. The book presents the student with short kernel sentences to combine into longer, more complex structures. In combining, students stretch into learning to control sentences for length, pace, and complexity. When they edit their sentences, they practice the revision skills good writers all use. I have used this book successfully with remedial and entry level college students; it would also be appropriate for high school students and advanced intermediate students. It is not a technical grammar text, and can be useful without a sophisticated knowledge of grammar. The selections are engaging and are effectively presented in order of difficulty. This would be a useful text for home schoolers at the high school level.

Edmund Shaftesbury's book is not a book to read only. It requires studying his lessons. These lessons are most intriguing and you are very curious to learn more and more. They are also easy to understand and to apply. The beauty of the book is that you can open it at any page and discover something exciting. Then, of course you want to go back to catch up with the beginning. I have not finished it, but I can already see a big difference in my life: I feel more energetic and people have been particularly nice to me for the last few days, without my doing anything.

The negative reviewer of this book is a clueless, churlish, ignorant twick. Pay him zero heed.

Anybody into Gurdgieff, who knows of NLP and Milton Erickson, Estabrooks; and/or knows of the entheogenic Gnostic rabbit-holes of which Manly P. Hall was completely in the dark about - will appreciate this book.

What a hoot! Quaint, presumptuous, full of fluff, and non-stop kookery. If you enjoy the outrageous and the odd, as I do, you'll be delighted with this long-winded, pompous exposition of complete nonsense. Magnetism is personal power and the author's treatise on how to attain it is total bunk peppered with pseudo-science. There's even a chapter about developing a "magnetic eye!" The author whose real name was Albert Edgerly and who on occasion called himself Dr. Ralston, developed quite a loyal following during his day (1852-1926) among whom was William Danforth, the president of Purina, who even added Ralston to his company's name!

I was introduced to this book from a friend of myne. She was very pleased with all the good outcomes she recieved from the book, and thought i might enjoy it too. I had auto-immune hepatitis in my liver, an enlargened spleen, depression, and i was struggling with an eating disorder for 5 years by that time. I was at a very low point. When I read this book, I felt it would be worth a shot to try. I felt wonderul, even after the first week. I had so much energy, and actually wanted to go out and do things. I looked a lot healthier, and felt it too. This book has done amazing things for me, and I plan on continuing with this way of life as long as I live. I am the happiest now I have ever been. I think i should add, I used to have to go to my doctor and special doctors to get treated and keep track of my liver, but now, my liver is back to the healthy state it used to be. My doctor even told me there was no need to continue on my medication, and that my body was taking care of itself just fine now. That was a huge relief and happiness for me.
