I am going on a cruise in June and would love to be in a 2 piece suit, while not scaring others. So I found this book and decided to give it a try. I am on Week 4 and have lost about 50% of my belly. You will be challenged and I spent the first two weeks eating Ibuprofen, but it is totally worth it!! The exercises are deceptively easy - you feel it the next day though. Totally worth the money and time. It would be nice if there was a DVD for the Pilates portion of the workout so you learn to do them correctly.

Not just for Women!

Not just for Women! As a Doctor of Chiropractic I have encouraged patients of both sexes to buy the book. It is filled with great workouts that can challenge people of all fitness levels. Targeted at the muscles needed to stabilize and support your body (the "core"), not only will this help you tone, but strengthen as well.

Karon integrates exercises like Pilates (long a favorite exercise of dancers) with exercises usually only performed by elite athletes like "plyometrics" and interval training (made popular recently in an article published in The Australian Journal of Applied Physiology). Pilates was started by Joseph Pilates as a way to rehabilitate wounded soldiers during World War I. It emphasizes control, strengthening and stretching of key muscles in the body. Plyometrics uses quick short movements to help build strength, and speed. Interval training usually involves high speed workouts along with lower intensity workouts such as sprints, while performing a longer run. Interval training helps burn calories and increases cardiovascular fitness.

Karon's program is FUN! Her writing style is easy to read, follow, and is entertaining. She takes you from the basics, to more advanced exercises as your skills improve. By the time you're done you'll have a better body, not just a better "bikini body."

Now that I have read this book I know how to properly order a cheeseburger so that I don't upset the balance of my stomache. I feel confident in knowing what I can eat, with what and when. This was alot easier to understand than any of the Suzanne Sommers books. The book wasn't filled with recipes for the rich and famous.I enjoyed this book and will pass it along to other friends who are still eating those Cheeseburgers loaded with everything and supersized fries.

This book is very helpful in redefining the Food Combining rules that Marilu Henner talks about in her books. After reading all of Henner's books, I still had some additional questions about how to properly food combine. This book was a tremendous help. Plus, it is short, sweet, and to the point. Excellent book.

Every book I have ever bought that refered to food combining contained hundreds of pages of small print. Not very inviting and difficult to read and understand. This book clarifies and explains the simple rationals and concepts. I'm trying to give this way of eating a good try, but I do not want to pull out a book that looks like War and Peace every time I eat something. This is so easy to refer to and transport around with me, until I know what I am doing.

Beer is a Starch

Review Date: 2001-07-13
Who knew beer was a starch? Not me! Like many of the other reviewers, I came into food combining through the Marilu Henner, Total Health Makeover plan. Marilu's books are great but they don't provide enough detail about classifying produce. For instance, I wanted to eat a sweet potato with a protein and checked Marilu's book to make sure that sweet potatoes were veggies. Sweet potatoes? Not listed. I originally ordered Kathryn Marsden's book to fill in the gaps for the missing food items but wound up learning more than just how to classify produce. In addition to including and classifying every fruit or veggie known to man, it's also small enough that I can carry it in my purse for quick reference in restaurants. Now, I know not to drink beer with fish.

...and in case you're wondering, sweet potatoes are starches!

I have taken classes from Rice' and every class has taught me something new and inspired me creatively. I'm an experienced editor and agree better proof reading was needed but her examples and information and her association with other artists included in the book are the most important reason for buying it. If her name is on a book, buy it. She has a new book coming out in October 2004 and I am anxious to buy it too.

This book is delightfully full of creative uses of rubber stamps by talented artisans in many mediums. The author has explained every project in easy-to-understand terms. Projects are separated into sections, such as "for the home," which makes it easy to select a project, and each section has a well-written introduction by the author. I didn't find one project I didn't like or wouldn't want to reproduce. The photography is wonderful! Any little petty glitches, which you'll find in any book, are easily overlooked because of the innovative subject matter and the masterful photos. (Even the revered "Chicago Manual of Style" has typos!) If you want something a little different, this is the book I recommend. It's worth every penny I spent on it, and I look forward to more great books by the author!

The tip about silk screen ink (for art on fabric) saved me weeks of reinventing the wheel, and that's just one very small note in a book chock FULL of fabulous ideas and projects. Thank you, Rice!

This Instructional Project Book offers wonderful projects by today's renowned top artists in stamping, clay, collage, etc. However typographical errors distract from the step-by-step instructions.
Xyron is one of the most "top of mind" brands in the Arts and Crafts industry, but was referred to as Zyron several times throughout the book. I noticed misspelled words such as Dall instead of Doll and poor sentence structure.
I do not blame the author, but the Publishing House for proofreading errors. This shows lack of knowledge and details for the art form in which they are representing.
When I buy a book of this price point and with step-by-step instructions I expect top-notch editing!!!!

This cookbook is great! I've only been on the diet for a few weeks, so hopefully it works! Gives all of the information for a great diet, and tons of recipes that are easy to follow. Mostly involves eating a lot of low fat whole grains, and pastas--and staying away from red meats. If you want to check out information on the diet before purchasing the book, just check out their website at mediterrasian.com.

A Way of Living that's Better and Easier than a Diet or Exercise Plan
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-29
It just makes sense. The most delicious food is the most healthful. A few years ago it dawned on me that all my favorite cuisines were either from the Mediterranean or Asian regions. I daydreamed about a "MediterrAsian" restaurant, thinking what a catchy name I had cleverly invented. Surely no one else would ever join such different styles of food together. Or would they? I plunked "mediterrasian" into a search engine and was transported to a place even better than my imaginary restaurant.

Ric and Trudy's website was like an oasis to me. All my life I had never had to worry about my weight, but that changed when I became pregnant at age 29. By the time I found their website, number two was on the way and my metabolism wasn't keeping up. Dieting was completely foreign to me, and being a foodie who loved cooking, I dreaded the idea of having to give up fats like cheese, olives and avocados, or carbs like pasta, potatoes, and fresh fruits. All the popular diet programs either consisted of calorie counting (i.e. small portions of reduced fat or non-fat foods) or of eliminating carbs and eating lots of protein. My dream diet was more along the lines of French Women Don't Get Fat meets Yan Can Cook, but I didn't know how to translate that to every day life, or if it would even be healthy. Joining a gym sounded about as appealing as going to the dentist. Formal exercise and sports were not this bookworm's cup of tea.

So when the Mediterrasian Way presented that third, balanced option, it simply felt right...and had the scientific basis to back it up--not just from recent times, but going back centuries. As I explored the extensive website, it was like coming home--from a nutritional and culinary perspective, it all resonated with my knowledge and experience, gleaned from both my own education and being raised by a health-conscious ethnically diverse cooking-oriented family. Not only did the theory make sense, but the authors had translated it into practical menus and recipes for every day living.

The emphasis on natural movement was something I had always intuited, so it was refreshing to see that validated by the longevity reported in studies of Mediterranean and Asian cultures based on an active (and simultaneously restful) lifestyle combined with healthful cooking. Granted, I couldn't achieve that level of movement with my nose in a book or up against a computer screen all day, but as a mother of little ones and a homemaker in a house with stairs, my once somewhat sedentary existence has been exchanged for a life made up of fairly rigorous hands-on tasks.

I was tempted to print out the whole website, but instead I emailed the authors, thanking them for creating such an amazing resource and suggesting they turn it into a book. Well, I wasn't the only one, so it came as no surprise when about a year later, Ric informed me they were doing just that. I was quite willing to pay to hold a printed and bound version of their website in my hands, but the book is actually much more than that. It's a chronological journey and explanation of The MediterrAsian Way, as well as a treasury of creative meal planning ideas and recipes with pages of mouthwatering full color photographs.

Like the way of life it outlines, the book is light enough to read in a day, but so rich in content that I keep returning to it to absorb the principles and implement the techniques. Because no foods are excluded, this style of cooking and eating lends itself to very versatile and flexible menus.

In a literary sense, it reads more like a guidebook than a textbook, perfect for the armchair traveler, but also meaningful to those of us who've been overseas and are delighted to revisit the flavors and lifestyle we tasted while abroad. Thanks to Ric and Trudy's excellent direction, I have found my MediterrAsian restaurant--right in my own kitchen.

The book is beautiful from the very cover and is not just a collection of recipes. The first part explains the Mediterrasian philosophy, backed up with medical facts and history, and an actual plan to follow a Mediterrasian way of life for 14 days. (As someone currently living in Italy, I can say living like this for far more than 14 days is anything but a pain!) The second part is a catalog of delicious recipes showcased with beautiful pictures that, by a historical coincidence, happen to be great for your health.

Not only a cookbook with great, fairly simple recipes but it also offers a unique 14 day menu/lifestyle plan a la mediterraean. I especially love the suggestions for menu/activity/lifestyle based on certain occasions such as a romantic evening, hectic weekend, airplane travel and several others. Great suggestions for living a more balanced, relaxed life and eating healthier as well. Highly recommended for those looking for something beyond the standard cookbook. Beautiful color pics as well of many of the recipes featured.

Not a diet plan at all

Review Date: 2007-09-29
This is not a diet plan. This is some rather helpful information that may lead to healthy lifestyle adjustments. The recipes are delicious. I found one error in the book as far as a page number but that is all. I am a cheese lover, but so far I have adapted more of an Asian approach to eating and I must say that I really don't miss dairy as much as I thought I would.

I hope that Ric And Trudi take it to the next level and provide some nutritional information on the various accompaniments that can be consumed with foods. I'm sure that there is some benefits to the various pickles, relishes, and non-alcoholic beverages I have enjoyed since my youth other than the taste they provide. There has not been much written on the subject but I'm sure a better understanding will add more dimension and enjoyment to eating food.

I like this cooking book and use it wuite often. It has several sections, and I especially like the one on salads and salad dressings and the one of fruit smoothies. The book can actually be used by people who have not read the Fit for Life books, too, as it contains a summary of the main info on food combining and fruit consumption; while Fit for Life fans will like it as it will bring nice new recipes in their kitchen, while still assuring them they are eating as healthy as possible.

The book contains several sections: fruit smoothies, juices and salads; vegetable salads and many dressings for them: sandwitches (yes, you can have a properly combined sandwicth, and once you had one, you won't want to go back to the old way!); soups; vegetable dishes; feast and buffest dishes.

The recipes are simple to realize even for people who don't have much experience in cooking, and they are realized with readily available items. This book will allow you to cook for your family and know they are eating properly without much effort on your side, and they'll like what you cook!

Particularly recommended for vegetarians! But anyone will like this book.

SharePoint as an application development platform is long on potential, short on guidlines. Pro SharePoint Solution Development guides the user through applciation development techniques that leverage the infrastructure (security, doc management, database access, navigation) of SharePoint to deliver application functionality. This book does not assume the reader is an advanced .Net developer, nor does it treat the reader as brand new to the concepts of application development. It cuts directly to the use of built in features and the creation of custom features and how to bind them together to create solutions.

Comprehensive guide for MS Office and SharePoint integration developers
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-13
This book offers an indebt review of how SharePoint fits in the Microsoft Office ecosystem. It delivers a variety of advanced examples, richly illustrated with sample code, downloadable from Apress, and step by step instructions and illustrations in the book itself.

The organization of the book is very convenient and the first four chapters allow the reader to brush up his knowledge about MS Offices and SharePoint with abundant external links. Each consecutive chapter after that represents a standalone example based on a real-world scenario. The examples are focused on the integration with a particular MS Office product. For example Chapter 5 demonstrates a scenario where MS Word integrates with SharePoint and Chapter 9 shows how to construct PowerPoint slides using content stored in a SharePoint list. Every example starts with an introduction and walkthrough, which allows the reader to start reading the chapter directly without losing context.

The complexity of integrating products of the MS Office family in enterprise solutions requires quite a bit of knowledge and experience thus I do not recommend this book to beginners in SharePoint and MS Office programming. While this book has a plenty of introductory and historical information about MS Office development and SharePoint customization, it does not emphasize on important steps of professional SharePoint development such as creation of SharePoint solutions, list and site template customization and provisioning. However if you are already familiar with SharePoint (WSS 3, MOSS 2007) concepts such as solutions, features, workflow etc., this is the book to put all these features in the context of enterprise applications.

The software and hardware requirements for the examples in this book are quite high, so if you want to be able to implement them on your own you need to allocate some time to prepare a system with MOSS 2007, MS Office 2007 Enterprise, VS 2008 Professional or Team Edition and for the first example MS Office 2003. In addition there are several manual actions, which require a bit more time.

Something, which may not be obvious from the title, is the heavy use of the new MS Office document standard - Office Open XML (commonly referred to as OOXML or OpenXML). This was my first exposure to this format specification and I found its use throughout the book very useful.

Overall this book is of great value to intermediate and advanced developers, working on enterprise applications based on the MS Office system or integration projects with third party vendors. The examples can be read independently and each one of them not only demonstrates the implementation of a particular scenario, but also provokes ideas for other projects.

This is the 5th book on MOSS 2007/WSS 3.0 that I have bought so far and it is the best as far as SharePoint development. Each chapter after chapter 4 describes a real-world project for integrating SharePoint with Office. The book assumes that you already understand SharePoint development and .NET programming. You can download the code and I have not had any errors compiling it so far. The book makes heavy use of the System.IO.Packaging namespace and so there are many examples generating xml-based office documents. This book gets straight to the point with lots of code. I highly recommend it.

I am involved with SharePoint developer education so I buy and scan through every single SharePoint title when it becomes available. There are plenty of SharePoint books out today that all cover the same basic topics. This book was special because it had a significant amount of content that I have not seen anywhere else. In particular, I like the way this books explains how a developer can integrate Office 2007 office applications together with SharePoint 2007. It goes beyond the typical 'hello world' examples and offers plenty of gems that could only have been gathered from real-world experience rolling out projects in a production environment. Congrats to Ed and Susie!

This was my first "healthy" cookbook, purchased in 1973. I have used it so much the pages are torn and discolored. There is a dictionary of food, helpful for those who are unfamiliar with such things as "agar-agar, arrowroot flour, carob, gum karaya" etc. Charts of daily intake requirements, wonderful recipes, herb information, food combining rules, and more. The authors were way ahead of their time.

This book is inspiring on every level, and it is too bad it is out of print. But I know for a fact that at one time it was very popular, so there must be abundant used copies out there. Get one! Kathleen and Nick Greco present a colorful book filled with projects and swatches that teach us how to combine yarns of different fibers and types into eye-catching art pieces we can use and wear. Using clear language and brilliant photographic images, the Grecos illustrate harmony among shapes, colors, and textures using a Color Wheel tool that is easy to master.

The authors explain how to mix colors, shades, and textures of different yarns for the best possible look among five fibers and five textures. The fibers include cotton, wool, an innovative bamboo, silk, and mohair, while the textures are ribbon, bouclé, chenille, slubbed, and multi-strand. It was particularly interesting to read about slubbed yarns and to see accomplishments in bamboo fibers.

The color relationships, or harmonies, that the Grecos explain make sense and are visually attractive. Colors are arranged according to seasons of the solar year and this seems logical. From nine basic yarns, Kathleen and Nick create some 300 color pairing possibilities, all unusual and all good to look at in the color swatches presented. The combination of text and graphics appear as a scientific yarn manual that is fun to read.

In addition to all this, the Grecos have included eight separate knitting projects arranged by Color Seasons, including two handbags, two scarves, a sleeveless top, a summer sarong, a fall wrap, and a winter sweater. All of the patterns are readily understandable and designated as Beginner, Easy, or Intermediate. Each pattern includes a graphic block illustration of the project pieces as they look before they go together, a very helpful tool. The book also includes a chapter on substituting yarns one for another when a particular yarn is not available or beyond reach in price.

The Grecos work through Dimensional Illustrators and have produced nearly two dozen craft and graphic arts books, such as Beyond the Scarf. Living scenic Pennsylvania with Nick, Kathleen also owns Jellyyarns.com and has applied for patents on yarns of her own creation from plastics.

Armchair Interviews says: This book is a winner that will encourage more people to try needle arts.

This book is beautifully organized, well thought out and visually appealing. It is an excellent reference for yarn and color combinations and how they work and look together. The section on color is especially helpful whether or not you are familiar with the color wheel. This is one of those quality reference works that I'll keep and use for a long, long time.

Although I have not thoroughly combed thru this book or actually used it for knitting, at first and second glances, it seems like it was a good purchase decision. I've been looking for a book such as this for a long time. For any knitter who has lots of differents types of leftover or "whim" purchase yarn - this book offers lots of different ways to combine lots of types, textures and colors, so that they actually look good together. Most of my "diy" tries at mixing haven't turned out well, so I'm planning on this book being a big help.

This is a cookbook like no other. Definitely NOT for the beginning cook, however. The flavor combinations are simply amazing. Some recipes are simple, but don't be surprised to see "two weeks advance preparation" at the top of a recipe. My favorite is the Pears Poached in Red Wine with Roquefort Cream, which had my guests literally howling!! This book is just a great adventure in cooking...and eating.

This has been my favorite cookbook since 1993! Many of the recipes are a bit of work, but all are worth the effort. The "Pork and Succotash Stew" is fabulous...the secret ingredient is caraway seed. Mmmm. I also love the "Pan-Roasted Lamb Chops with Cracked Pepper and Tarragon"...and be sure to try the "Chicken, Spinach, Eggplant, & Peanut Salad".

I feel emotions about this book that I did not think that a cookbook could elicit from me.

For starters, the recipes themselves are fantastic. Over the years (I originally bought the hardback) I believe that I have tried at least 75% of them, among my favorites being the guacamole made from peas and the glazed brussel sprouts, of all things. The only recipe that didn't work out for me was the homemade sauerkraut, and the book has a whole chapter on sausages that just didn't appeal to me as a matter of personal taste.

But the recipes are only the beginning.

As educational as the surprising combinations are, the most valuable aspect of the book is content unusual in a cookbook: Michael Roberts includes a succinct prelimary discussion on flavors and how to marry, oppose, and juxtapose them, each of these verbs representing a different type of combination. For example, lemon and garlic is a flavor *marriage*; sweet and salty, like peanuts on an ice cream sundae, is a flavor *opposition*; and clove and red wine is a flavor *juxtaposition* (tasted at different times or on different parts of the tongue).

These three types of combination underlie all the recipes in the book. Roberts takes pains throughout to explain why his combinations work and to offer variations on the recipes. Together with his introductory chapter, this book offers the cook beyond the beginner stage a tutorial in culinary creativity.

The adventurous cook will not regret this purchase.
