Rossell Hope Robbins massive 1959 work "Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology" has been reprinted many times but is currently out-of-print. It is indeed a fascinatingly horrible compenidum of information regarding witches, demons, devils, demonologists, inquisitors, judges, hysterias, torture, and murder. It has served for the past 40 odd years as one of the most read and referenced work on the history of witchcraft and demonology, especially by many popular witchcraft authors and historians who continue to use and cite the work today.

The trouble is that much of the scholarship contatined in this work is sadly outdated and lacks information on much of the recent work done in the field of witchcraft studies in the past 20 years. Also, Robbins' work suffers from the same problem that afflicted many other similar early witchcraft histories: bad translations and historical forgeries. It has been shown that many of the early translations of a number of Latin works on witchcraft (particularly those translated by the Rev. Montague Summers) are suspect. Also, several 19th century histories of the witchcraze and the Inquisition that have been used as source material by countless authors, including Robbins, have been proven to be forgeries, particularly the works relating the early 14th century Inquisitorial witch executions in France. Robbins' work has also been criticized by scholars for its lack of objectivity in its history. But this work still remains popular today and understandably so, as it contains many lurid and engaging articles on just about every aspect of the witch hunts from the 15th to the 18th century in Europe and North America. Despite many of its flaws, it is still a useful reference and for that reason it still gets 3 stars, plus I must admit, it maintains some of the mysterious aura surrounding the history of witches and demons that much recent scholarship has tried to dispel, and that makes it fascinating reading, if for the wrong reasons.

I actually found this book at a garage sale when I was in high school in the early 80's. I read the book until it fell apart. It was a tremendous introduction to the true horrors of the witchcraft trials and tortures and taught me things I would not learn in school. Sparked my interest in learning more about all aspects of history and keeps me engaged even 25 years later.

A great reference library addition!

I first stumbled onto this book when I needed reference material for a paper on witchcraft. I've gone back to re-reference this book too many times to count! It has information on almost every aspect of witchcraft and demonology; terrific for the beginner interested in this subject. You can feel the hopelessness of the accused; I felt very thankful to be living in this day and age. Highly recommended!

Thumbs Up for BOG!

This book is simple and straight forward. BOG is an icon on OG, a famous cannabis site, popularized his successful method of organic growing and helped countless growers with sound advice. He has put as much of the information that he practiced and spouted into this book. BOG had plenty of time to hone his writing skills in the many posting on the Internet. It is difficult to condense the hundreds and hundreds of pages in Internet threads into a single book, but BOG did a good job.

He has also developed several strains of cannabis. He simplifies breeding so that anybody that can read can cross plants and make seeds.

I particularly like his writing style that is easy to understand and at times humorous.

You will learn from this book and grow a better organic garden! I recommend this book for all growers that are into organics.

Pretty good for beginners, not the best bang for your buck, though

I was looking forward to getting this book as I have tremendous admiration for Bushy's work. It is definitely geared toward the beginner/novice gardener. It reads a bit more like a conversation than a 'how-to' guide. I believe there is more room for detail within the text and subject matter tends to jump around, however, the basic premises come across. There tends to be alot of product placement, but, hey, you wanna grow like Bushy, use what he uses. The book doesn't tell you how to make bubblehash. It only references you to a website where you can purchase a "bubble bag". The topic of breeding is covered sufficiently and he describes his methods in an easy to understand format. I feel this book would be better suited in an eBook format/PDF. The asking price is a bit much, probably due to it being a short print run. For this price I expected full color photos throughout but that's not the case. If your a beginner it will definitely get you well on your way, but, it may leave some unanswered questions after your up and running. Layout could be better. Looks like it was ALL done on MS Word. It's a good book. I'd recommend it to any beginner or an experienced gardener who wants to see what makes BOG tick. Good job, Bushy!

Having read this book I recommend it to anyone who has no experience at all with growing marijuana. Handy tips for medical growers and first timers make the book quite useful.
The collection of budshots in the back of the various strains bred by BOG is what makes this book worthwhile, actual photos of what you should be getting using the methods in this book.
BOG is quite the media star and his postings have been on Overgrow and ICMag for years. The master Mr. BOG has spoken, buy his book and you will be able to get started.

A Must Read ...for new medical mari growers trying to learn to grow indoors.

This beautiful book is the definative choice for new marijuana growers. It is geared to help those who know little about growing indoors under lights. BOG teaches organic indoor growing for growers who are just sick of buying their medicine.

This book takes you from getting some seeds through harvest, curing and even tells you how to make your own bubblehash!

The illustrations show early identification of male and female cannabis plants and just about everything you need to see. It's a trip to read and BOG really made learning fun and easy with his guide.

In the back a color budshot section in highest resolution color will inspire many to grow for themselves. This book will be a best seller because of the simple system and the beauty of what BOG shows of his garden.

Those who know the author have long awaited this book. BOG really comes through and his heart and soul went into his book. He has taught his simple methods online for many years now and this is a culmination of his knowledge.

Bonanza of Green is a simple system like SOG or SCROG but BOG has people growing in a small production line system.

Before you decide read his book because its so simple you will choose BOG first and last.

Sad but true picture of Indian life in many former reservations

Since I grew up in an area near an Indian reservation in central MN, and now live in an area that was formerly a reservation in central OR, I had to read this book by Rick Steber about his viewpoint. It brings us great sadness to realize how difficult it's been for the American Indian population to assimilate and succeed in our current culture, and why alcohol plays such a great role in their attempts. I did enjoy reading 1491 which documents their predecessors' success in living a better life as the early natives to this continent. I'm glad to hear we're beginning to see the necessity for restoring the prairie grasses and conservation practices of burning, etc. that were successful for the early forestation and conservation of our country.

As I lived close to this area during the time of this book, it was thrilling to read Rick Steber's view of the happenings at that time.

It supposedly is not based on facts. I remember too well the incidents and the stories of the law enforcement officers relating to the "trouble with the natives". Humourous as it was at the time, it is truly a sad tale of loss of another one of our native American tribes and the plight the white man has brought to them.

A Wonderful Historical Novel
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-28
Buy the Chief a Cadillac is indeed a wonderful historical novel, although fairly recent history, as the time period of the book is in the early 1960's.
The Klamath Indian tribe, living on a million acre reservation in southern Oregon, is about to be terminated. The government passed a plan where they would pay each Indian $43,000 and in return, the reservation would be no longer. This novel is set in the days just before and immediately after the Termination Act took place.
Full of well fleshed out characters, mean drunks, crazy cowboys, whisky swilling loggers, lawmen both good and bad, this book is a darn fine read. It is historically correct and explores clearly one of the last really big rip-offs of the Indians by the US Government.
Buy the Chief a Cadillac is fueled by 60's rock and roll, a river of potent booze, hopped up hotrods, guns, chaos, greed, murder and abundant mayhem. We meet and journey with each of the many and varied interesting characters from their own point of view, something that works very well.
The book is tight, keeps the reader turning the pages; the writing is crisp, clean, and clear, and has a definite ring of authenticity about it. This is the first of Rick Steber's books I've read and I plan to read more of them. I'd recommend it for anyone who enjoys reading about the West, for those interested in American history, and think it would make an excellent book for professors to have their students read in classes that deal with the American Indian, the reservations, the 1960's. A terrific book by a talented writer.

This text goes directly to aircraft performance without digression. Clear and easy to read yet well documented. I have looked for a book like this for some time and am very happy to have found it. If you liked Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators (ISBN 1-56027-140-x) but thought it too long and too general you will treasure this book.

This is an ideal complement / study guide to the aircraft manufacturer's Pilot Operating Handbook.

Great Historical Reference Book for WWII
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-31
This book is the benchmark for reference books on WWII. Edited by David McCullough, this comprehensive book begins with pictures from before, during and after the war. Barbed wire still on Normandy beach decades after the war, a rusted tank in the water off an island somewhere in the South Pacific, and Japanese children playing near the bombed out ground zero of Hiroshima. There are over 600 pages of pictures, maps and enjoyable insight of the war. Mixed in are letters from important figures as well as ordinary men and women from all sides of the conflict balanced by the incredible talents of important historians such as McCullough.

Although first published in 1966 and out of print for ages, this well-written book stands the test of time. It belongs in every library, public and private, as an important resource for learning about World War II.

Not much more to say. If you purchase, admire, fire, or just drool over old firearms you need to add this book to your shelf. Every bit as important to the collector as the works by the late great George Madis. It is not necessarily a fun or even easy book to read but it is THE authoritative historical reference. If you can get your hands on an original hard-cover edition you'll find that the illustrations are just a bit clearer -- but bring more money.

The best authentic Italian recipe book I have found
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.

This book is so well set out and illustrated; it has the best recipies.

I studied Italian in Florence in 1964, and we had wonderful food in the family I lived with.

After I was married, in 1975, I found "Italian Regional Cooking" in a book sale in Syracuse, New York. We were on a strict budget, but we bought it, and "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare", at the same time.

Both are still in use, with equal satisfaction, 26 years later.

My husband has since died, but I still love this recipe book, as it afforded us so many memorable, and not expensive, feasts, and the recipies are easy to follow.

Buy it!

This is my favorite Italian Cookbook. I purchased it 15 years ago and still use it all the time. I was sorry to see it was out of print, as my copy is so worn. This is the real Italian cooking, arranged by the different regions of Italy. Don't expect typical Italian-American fare (spaghetti and meat balls with gallons of tomato sauce, pizza with tons of meat and cheese, etc.). The recipes in this book are spectacular. Some of my favorites include Osso bucco Milanese (braised veal shanks) with saffron risotto, spaghetti with red clam sauce Viareggio, Manzo brasato (a beef roast, slowly braised in red wine with vegetables, served with polenta), and the Abruzzi pasta sauce made with lamb, red sweet peppers and tomatoes (d'Agnello). The recipes are easy to follow. Though the author often asks for fresh tomatoes, we've found that good canned plum tomatoes or crushed tomatoes in puree work fine for these recipes. Although occasionally, an ingredient is not readily obtainable in the U.S., you can usually find suitable substitutes. If you love authentic Old World Italian cooking, this book is well worth having.

Italian Regional CookingWhen I was in college in the sixties, I heard of Ada Boni as the best Italian cookbook writer. Only recently have I begun cooking in any serious way. I found a copy of Italian Regional Cooking at Powell's in Portland, Oregon several months ago. I have fallen in love with Ada Boni, though I fear she is long gone (I searched for an notice of her passing on the internet, but nothing turned up). My wife understands, after a fashion, in part because she loves the results. The recipes are so extraordinarily good - try the Ragu Bolognese, the Napolitano Sauce (with about half the oil though), the osso buco, etc. and see for yourself. Enjoy!

I was originally given this cookbook by my grandmother 20 years ago, and I used it so much it completely fell apart. I've used this cookbook far, far more than any of the several others I have. I was so happy to be able to get another one in perfect condition! Every single recipe I've tried out of the hundreds of recipes in the book (and I've tried many, many of them over the years) has been excellent and several of the recipes have become family favorites - especially Morrocan Chicken. I highly recommend this cookbook.

The 3,500 entries cover all elements of interior design. All terms are clearly and concisely explained. The numerous illustrations supplement the text admirably, delineating furniture styles and pieces, architectural details, design elements, room layouts, carving, sculpture, and hundreds of items that are best understood when seen. There are also brief biographies about individuals in design and associated fields. Alternative spellings, foreign language words and terms in current use in America, obsolete expressions and references -- all are to be found here.

In short, this is a reference book tremendous in its scope: a comprehensive, reliable one-volume library of essential information on decoration.
