Best of the Best There Are...

I've read Tarot Cards since 1974 and this was my first deck. Now, it is still my undisputed favorite.

I collect Tarot Decks and yet I always come back to this one. Some of it's appeal is the Church of Light: Book 6 - The Sacred Tarot that one should purchase to go with it. I have more than 100 books on the Tarot and the one by The Church of Light mentioned above is undoubtedly the most informative book on this subject that I have ever come across. (Also known previously as The Brotherhood of Light...)

Each card gives you the Egyptian, Hebrew, English letters, the constellations, the sign, it's decanate, the planetary influence and in the case of the Major Arcana, it shows a picture from the Ancient Egyptian Initiation Chambers inside the pyramids.

Many are put off by the quiet black and white cards, it is significant however that you are encouraged to color YOUR cards yourself and to use those colors that are most beneficial to you. Only a beginner wouldn't recognize the subtle but profound wisdom of this practice...

There are unique stories/legends/reasons why the Major 8 and Major 11 are reversed from the positions one usually finds in some of the other popular decks out there. After extensively studying numerology and astrology however, I have to agree with THIS placement.

I am so grateful that I was led to this deck and it's study organization before I ran into other decks. I got off to a solid gold start.

It is a testament to the outstanding nature of this Church of Light Tarot Deck that it always sells out as fast as it is reprinted. If you run into a used deck, grab it immediately. It is worth buying as much as the new decks are. I always go to the website to look for them when I can't find them here on Amazon. Happy hunting!!

These cards are authentic tools of divination

In 1978 I learned to read the tarot using this deck and have used it continuously since that time. With the help of the astrological glyphs right on the cards, I magnitized and embedded the meaning of the cards within one week. Yes, I had already studied and mastered the science of astrology for 2-3 years which assisted my progress. However, the Church of Light tarot deck is the best form of divination that works for me. These cards are an authentic tool for divination. I never go anywhere without them. Try them and see for yourself!

The Brotherhood of Light Tarot is one of the many decks in the world that has the 8 & 11 reversed (e.g., "The Thoth Deck"). It is not the easiest to use, because the cards are produced in Black and White (explained below) and the Lesser Arcana have minimal symbolism.... The Black & White rendering of the deck is for the purpose of the Initiate gaining a deeper contact with the cards and learning the symbolism & color-relationship of each aspect of the card by RESEARCHING and studying the texts....and coloring them, by hand (which I do not advise, until you study Tarot--esp., "The Sacred Tarot," by C.C. Zain. THE MAJOR ARCANA are wonderful--very Unique ! You will treasure this deck, even if you do not connect with it until you have read a few books and gained a firm ground upon-which to draw info from the Inner Plane. This is mostly a deck for initiates of the BofL.

Having used this deck for over thirty years, I highly recommend it to everyone who is a serious student of Sacred Tarot. The absence of color has been an advantage for me. The more attention paid to this deck, and its accompanying book, The Sacred Tarot, Course V in the Brotherhood of Light series, the more progress is available to the student of tarot. This deck (and the book) are treasures for those who wish to make real progress as students of esoteric knowledge. Let others "play" with tarot decks. If you really want inner knowledge, this is the deck for you!

This is one of those rare books that grows with you. As you become accostomed to it's design and function, you find that your developing abilities you never knew you had. This book has a logic and sence of serenity that other oracle books lack, and you can learn the game of Mah Jongg! A great tool for people who are bored with the average tarot type readings.

I have been an avid student of fortune telling, particularly Chinese fortune telling, for a number of years. I had also spent MANY hours enjoying a good game of Mahjongg before. Rumors abounded about the tiles being used as a means of divination, but I had never been able to find a codified source. For those interested in Chinese esotera, or in cartomancy, this is a wonderful source.

Before "The Secret" or many of the other modern-day prosperity literature, came "The Game of Life and How to Play It." Florence Shinn delivers her philosophy in simple terms, as one of the pioneers of the New Thought Movement. Many abundance & prosperity writers after her time built upon the basics that she advanced in this book. This is a good primer if you want to see where some of this thinking originated--she was one of a number of authors who were exploring universal laws during this time, and easier to understand than some.

The cards were not what I expected, I thought they would be geared towards adults but some of the questions were really childish. I was slightly dissapointed :( If you are looking for something to do with the girls, you might want to buy a game. Most of the women at my party were not thrilled with the questions. You decide.

You may quibble about some of his point ranges but this is a good book with a large number of examples and bidding sequences.

Not only does the author address the Negative double, but he discusses hand evaluation and some other bidding.

Good value for the money.

Solid work that fills a hole in the literature

Finally someone wrote the definitive book on negative doubles! This book is well organized, methodically studying each possible opening-overcall situation and looking at the alternatives to a double and the proper responses to a double in each situation. Marty's numerous examples make his ideas clear.

This book misses my 5th star for two major reasons: (1) a method of bidding over a negative double by the overcalling side would be welcome, and (2) the book does not address the alternative "negative free bid" approach (although this may be beyond the scope of this book). However, it's good to see the scientist in Marty (if you've only read "Points Schmoints" and "Marty Sez", check out the "Better Bidding with Bergen" series!) return in the Thrump Double concept!

Novice to advanced players will benefit from this book, and even experts will find some meat here.

Definitive work on one of the most important bidding tools

The negative double is one of the most important bidding tools in modern bridge. Popular author and teacher Marty Bergen has written the definitive work on one of the most widely-used conventions. Marty clarifies the best way to play each sequence; so you can avoid any misunderstandings with your partner. Responses to the double are detailed, and new concepts such as Thrump doubles will be interesting to the more advanced player.

United We Stand; Divided We Fall

Review Date: 2002-06-30
Finally, an expert has put all the pieces of the negative double puzzle into a single, comprehensive, comprehensible book. If you play bridge competitively, you and your favorite partners need this book. Any two bridge players will have at least four opinions about any bidding sequence involving a negative double. Thus, you and your partner probably miss each other more often than not after an opponent overcalls your side's opening bid. Bergen explains clearly and comprehensively how you and your partner can change that.

Exactly copying Bergen's ideas may not be for you and yours. That understood, studying his ideas and considering the alternatives can only help your partnership develop your ideas and understandings. With a united position on negative doubles, an adverse overcall will lose some of its sting. Better, you and your partner will know much better when and why lowering the penalty pass boom on the overcaller is better than bidding on.

Bergen's Negative Doubles is a foundation stone in the competitive bridge player's library. Read it, let your partner read it, apply it, and watch your opponents weep.

They completely refreshed my memory about everything i had learned throughout the course. these cards are great if you have already learned all the US history material and need a serious refresher.

This was such a great product!!! It included everything in the AP exam, and more too. (However, you can't just use this to study for the exam, you should use AMSCO or a Kaplan review book). The cards were all in chronological order even in the color coded eras. The only problem I had with it was that sometimes the cards would get out of order, and they had no numbers so that I could put it back in order. Also, I wished the cards were a little bigger.

Amazing study tool.

If you are taking APUSH, and plan on taking the AP exam, GET THIS! I took the exam in 2007 and got a 5 and an A in the class. I borrowed these from a friend to refresh my memory so that I could take the US history SAT Subject test.

This stack of 600 cards was absolutely amazing. It brought the whole class back to me (which I had almost completely forgotten) in a week. So, if your near the end of your history class, this would be a GREAT tool to not only bring up all that colonial info you forgot about, but also help you make your understanding of anything you didn't quite understand in the class concrete.

An amazing tool!!!

Review Date: 1999-10-12
Ken Uston once again demonstrates why he was the world's foremost authority on the game of blackjack. His playing experiences were both varied and extreme. In this book, he tells stories (some told before) of his playing experiences, and details his ultimately fruitless attempts to get the Nevada Gaming Commission to stop the casino practice of barring card counters. Of note: in this book he disavows his previously touted Uston APC count, stating that it's just too difficult to use effectively, and that simpler systems are probably more effective in the long run. That piece of information alone makes the book worth having, and in this book he suggests which other systems should be used instead.

Review Date: 2001-12-05
This book does NOT contain tips on playing blackjack. Instead it is filled with stories and anecdotes of how the infamous Ken Uston used Team Play to beat the casinos out of millions of dollars. Millions. At times laugh-out-loud, occasionally boring when the courts become involved, but is quite accessible even for those with little familiarity with 21.

If you want to read about other casino shenanigans, like how some physics students put computers in their shoes and beat the roulette wheel (and still to this day receive royalty checks), grab a copy of the Eudemonic Pie. For the book that started it all: Beat the Dealer.

If you're looking to become a card counter after reading this, check out the de facto standard for any serious counter: Million Dollar Blackjack, also by Uston. Do not waste time with the others, particularly Jerry Patterson's shuffle tracking scheme.

Review Date: 2007-02-24
I bought this book a few months ago, and keep coming back to it. Very well written, with lots of info. on discipline, keeping your emotions in check, winning expectations, etc., which is very important to getting out of the casino with money. I like the authors progression, which although I don't believe gives you a mathematical advantage over the house, it does bring you closer to it. I don't agree with all the advice, but overall there is a lot of material here. And if it works for him after playing 20,000 hands, then he may be on to something.

I've tried counting, and agree with the author that suffering through the huge swings in your bankroll isn't very practical for the recreational gambler that bets in $5/$10 units. Plus it can take an awefully long time for the law of averages to even things out. I know the critics of progressions/regressions say they don't work, but if you can have fun with them and make some money, why not use them? An excellent, easy to read book. Try it, or modify his methods and see what happens. I've been having good results so far.

This works but you do have to practice and apply what you learn.

Bought this book this past spring. Have been playing blackjack for over 9 years now. Have tried it all, positive and negative progressions, card counting etc., and let me tell you that this is the best thing I have ever used or seen in print. Mr. Moore has a strategy that is both easy to use and does win most of the time.
I read the book 5 times and took a great deal of notes. Then I practiced about 2 to 3 hours every single day for 7 weeks. Finally I went to Las Vegas for a 6 day trip. I played 20 sessions in a little over 15 hours of total play. I won 70% of my sessions and 700 dollars profit. I then used it again in Tunica a few weeks ago. This time I played for a little over 34 hours and won 1855 dollars. So this thing can and does work. You must read and apply what it is that he teaches in the book. Expect to win only about 30 to 40 dollars an hour placing 10 dollar bets. If you go in knowing that this is what you can expect to win, then you are well on your way to being a very good blackjack player. No card counting involved and a strong basic strategy is included in the book. Just a great manual.
If you have any questions you can also email Mr. Moore at the books website and he will give you a prompt reply as he has done for me many times. Get this book and use what it teaches you.

Motocross Racers 30 Years of Legendary Bikes
By: Ray Ryan

This book is full of heart warming photos and facts about the bikes that started it all. I would recommend this book to all of those people who would like to learn about motocross history and people who make motocross a part of there own lives. This book is not for people who would like to sit down and read a nice picture book. This book has cold hard facts about who made bikes back then for motocross and also how they have changed throughout the years and the very first racers with these bikes.

I this book because it taght me what bikes were like a long time ago and because of how it went within the bike to show you how the engines and the whole bike really evolved from that time to present day.

This book teaches readers about the past in motocross. By the ebd of this book readers will have a full understanding of motocross and there values.

I would rate this book for about 4 ½ stars

It's a delightful book - BUT if you expected a selection of bikes that included your own, don't count on it. If you had a big-bore machine, you're going to love this book. If you are one of the MANY who didn't, you may find this book a disappointment, in not being two or three times as thick.

The VMX world can be grateful for this book. But a new edition or addition is needed.

The photography is excellent and the stories about how each bike was important in the evolution of design is great reading. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I wish it was about twice as thick... It's still a good value for the money though.

A two-time world series champion poker player and winner of ten bracelets from the World Series of Poker (as well as the winner of a 'Legends of Poker' tournament on the World Poker Tour), Doyle Brunson is a universally acknowledged legend of the game who brings more than half a century of experience to bear in "My 50 Most Memorable Hands". Doyle began playing as a young man in Texas when poker was an illegal pastime involving dodging the cops and avoiding being robbed, all while constantly moving on the road from town to town and city to city in search of a game. In this fascinating little book Doyle offers a collection of terrific stories combined with practical advice connected to some truly remarkable poker hands he's played out against some of the finest poker players to ever play the game. Each poker hand cited begins with a biographical anecdote providing an historical context, then follows Doyle's hand along with a paragraph or two of description as to how it was played out. Very highly recommended reading and a simply superb addition to the growing library of books about poker, each of these individual hands will be read with interest border on fascination by both novice poker players and those with more seasoned experience at the game.

In his 50+ years as a professional poker player Doyle Brunson has played the game almost everywhere you can imagine, from seedy pool halls, to home games on the "Texas circuit", to the biggest cash game in Vegas, to the final table of the WSOP. He recounts all of his adventures here with 50 colorful and interesting tales of the greatest hands he has ever played and some of the personalities he played them against. The mere fact that Brunson can even remember 50 hands out of all the millions he's played is quite an accomplishment, especially when you consider that one of the standard poker dictums is that you should try to forget the hand as soon as you've played it. There's no doubt that Doyle's phenomenal memory is one of the tools that separated him from his competition and has enabled him to stay at the top of the game for more than 30 years. Players expecting in-depth hand analysis should look elsewhere. You basically get pre-flop-flop-turn-river followed by a few anecdotal comments about the hand. I do have to say that the graphics are very high quality, among the best I've seen in a poker book. Although this book is not essential to your continuing poker education, it is a fast and very enjoyable read, one that will only increase your esteem for this living legend.

From the title you can tell that Doyle is going to give an acount of his most memorable hands and that is exactly what he does. He gives about a 2-3 page description of each entailing why the hand is memorable. Sometimes it is Doyle laying a bad beat on someone or someone dying at the table. I guess that would make a hand memorable for me too!

Obviously, this book is not technical. There is no hand analysis or percentages listed. Just a first hand account of some interesting poker hands from one of the legends of poker.

As always, I hang on ever word that doyle writes, and he writes precious few. The book ends abruptly after the last hand. Too bad Doyle isn't half the writer that he is a poker player, otherwise this would be an outstanding book.

All-in-all this is a very light book and an easy read. I laughed a couple of times, and gained a little more respect for the legend... About a 2 hour read.

Great book for the poker fan-atic in your life!

This is a review of _My 50 Most Memorable Hands_ by Doyle Brunson.

This book consists of a series of very short chapters (typically 2-3 pages) describing hands from all over Brunson's career, from a family game to the WSOP Main Event final table. Brunson says that the hands are not in any particular order (p. 9). Some readers will enjoy this book an immense amount, but others will find it completely uninteresting. Do you know who Doyle Brunson is? Have you heard of Johnny Moss, Stu Unger AND Phil Ivey? Are you amazed that anyone would re-raise pre-flop and then bet out on the flop, turn and river with 22 and a board of KK767 (hand no. 30)? Do you even understand what that last sentence meant? If you answered "Yes" to all these questions, you will probably really love this book. (If you answered "No" to any question, don't even bother finishing this review.)

I have to admit that, prior to reading this book, I had a sort of romanticized image of the life of Doyle Brunson. I guess I really bought into the persona he projects in televised games. I assumed that he was born into some Bible-belt community where gambling was frowned upon, and had to hide his new profession from his family. I imagined that he had gambled in seedy places where people did things like pull a knife on him for having a higher flush. I fantasized that he had seen people literally drop dead of exhaustion at the table during marathon multi-day gambling sessions. I even supposed (don't laugh at me here) that Brunson had seen someone shot dead right at the poker table. Yes, that was my silly, unrealistic vision of the gambling career of the man known as "Texas Dolly."

Well, guess what? That's all true, and much more equally amazing stuff. (For the particular stories I just adverted to, see hands no. 22, 24, 10 and 2.)

But true poker fans will be even more interested in the details of the hands that Brunson played. The famous hands are certainly here, including Brunson's stunning back-to-back 1976 and 1977 WSOP Main Event wins with the same hand: 10-2 (nos. 3 and 6). He also includes his second-place finish to Stu Unger in 1980, a hand he admits he misplayed (no. 17). But for me, the single most spectacular hand was the one in which Brunson had AA, the board was A4224, no flush (hence no straight flush) was possible, and he folded to a bet on the river. Did you get that? Brunson had the nut full house, aces full of fours, he folded on the river - and it was the correct laydown! (See no. 7 for this one.)

This book is not perfect, even for its target audience. Sometimes I would have liked more information about the details of each hand. How large was the pot? Who bet how much pre-flop, and on the flop, turn and river? Sometimes this information is provided, but not always. But overall this is a terrific book for any big poker fans you know.
