Tarot of the Old Path

Review Date: 2007-01-11
My review will be unique -- so far-- since I am not a Wiccan and not interested in Wicca, and I do not "read" tarot cards. I collect tarot decks (over the last 40 years I have owned about 100 decks, and currently have about 70), and I study each card individually for its beauty, artwork and symbolism. Using these criteria, Tarot of the Old Path is simply beautiful. It is a British deck and the artwork by Sylvia Gainsford is lovely. The medieval costumes are gorgeous in a fairy-tale kind of way, at least in the Major Arcana. The Minor Arcana are more like Mother Goose Medieval and display an impish sense of humor. As for the symbolism, it is evocative and sometimes scary (in a good way.) I refer you to the Moon card (which is here called Illusion) or the Judgment card (called Karma). The Empress, Emperor, High Priestess and High Priest make up a kind of little family (especially if you include the four children pictured, including the unborn baby of the pregnant Empress, and you can also include the all fabulous wild animals, including the mythical unicorn) and they tell a strong, positive, marvelous narrative. I originally bought just the deck, since I didn't think I needed the instruction book (not being a reader), however, I have now ordered the book to discover the "language of flowers" on the cards, as well as all the other symbols (is that a pelican on Card 13?) I can't recommend this deck too highly.

A most magical and powerful deck...A world of it's own.

I had this deck on my wishlist for a long time. Then decided I didn't want it. Basically kept going back and forth. Well I was at my local shop and saw they had a copy and just bought it. It seemed this deck had been putting itself in my path repeatedly, so I gave in!

And I am SO glad I did. I am a Witch of the old tradition (not wiccan) and I guess I thought or was worried this was the cheesy wiccan junk most of the other tarot are. Not so! The profound depths and beauty of the art and symbolism in these cards are unparalled. The Majors are by far at least number 2 in their stunning luminescence. So much detail and thought went into them. And the minors at first glance I was not pleased with. But with only the 2nd viewing I was madly in love. The faces are each so different and evocative. This is one deck I could instantly connect with and read intuitively. There is a lot of white on the minors and an intense focus on the person or persons on the cards, so you hone in on the symbolism and meaning right away.

Many of the Majors have been renamed which is fine and very well done. The cardstock is excellent and they're the perfect size I find. You don't really need the book, though I bought it along with the deck, but it does explain some of the meanings of symbols, animals and flowers that are found within the cards. I enjoyed the section on Barabra Cartland explaining why the Lovers card is dedicated to her.

If you think you might connect with this deck, and love the old ways, then for sure splurge and get this deck, you will not be disappointed.

I own MANY decks and this is the only one other than The Nigel Jackson Tarot where each card feels connected and like it is it's own kingdom/world.

I really know nothing about poker whatsoever, and after reading this book I know the basics. A lot of it was over my head, because I'm really not looking to play in a casino setting, and that's what a lot of it talked about. I did pick up some great tips though and for the price, it was worth the purchase.

I am a big fan of televised Texas hold'em, but when I started playing with a group of collegues, I realized this is a tricky game. Texas Hold'em for Dummies is a simple-stupid book that teaches you everything required to survive at the poker table. Easy to understand, plenty of examples, and a great reference if you forget anything. I gived this book two thumbs up-

I didn't know how to play poker until this year. I learned the rules and played a little online, but had no idea what I was doing. I picked up Texas Hold'em For Dummies and started practicing more and more online. A couple of weeks ago I was at a casino and decided to take a seat at a real poker table.

I was nervous when I sat down and was sure I would make a lot of mistakes. I remembered the advice and strategy from this book, played my hands according to the Harlan and Derossi rules, and found that I was winning pots. In three hours of play I doubled my money and felt a lot more confident about playing poker, both real-world and online.

This is a great book to learn the basics from, and it gives the beginning player a framework for learning. It's not just a lot of rules and lists, though; there are explanations for everything the authors advise, and plenty of real-life anecdotes.

This book taught me how to play poker and gave me the confidence to actually play the game.

Harlan's text is light and fun to read, yet very useful, concise and to the point. Differently than other poker books that scare you away by starting off with a lot of math and statistics and pot odds, Harlan goes through many other important and interesting poker stuff such as optimal starting hands, betting strategy for each round and table position, reading your opponents, different sorts of game - home, online, casino - before spaeking abouth the math (which, byt he way, he does in a very agreeable way, keeping it simple and straightforward - maybe because he knows his stuff - he is an applied math degree). the book also has easy to follow examples and real life anecdotes, keeping all that poker theory closer to what the average player will encounter at next Saturday's $10 poker night over his friends. It's definitely the first book on Texas Holdem you should buy, and you'll learn an awful lot from it.

this book contains a lot of basic info, but, particularly for a poker book, is very well written. it is not only tight, but, as an apparent rarity for poker authors, atrocious grammatical errors are also largely absent.

there are a few basic concepts, well explained, that even the somewhat strong player may benefit from relearning or considering. the beginning of the book is very basic, but is still perhaps a good review for most but very experienced stud players. for beginners, the next third of so of the book may be mildly helpful, but otherwise the descriptions of casinos and how to play there, manage buy in amounts, keep one's emotions in check after a so called "bad beat" (or bad play by the reader, which should, frankly, be a lot more upsetting than this silly idea than one should be upset because someone "sucked out" chasing with poor odds) etc., will only be read by the avid player with the expectation that this section will end soon(although his idea of getting up from the table when upset may be a good one for some players). it doesn't.

but when it does, the last portion of the book is well worth it. while some intermediate and advanced stud is left out, the author does lay out, on top of the earlier basic foundation, some of the more important next step concepts, and a few advanced plays in largely clear and logical fashion, with strong examples. on some of them one may disagree with the author's conclusions, and a consideration or two may have been omitted, but basically the material seemed reasonably solid, and his reasons are usually well stated. while the author's own experiences are somewhat over prevalent, they again read well, and at times are relevant when related to the play of hands.

while it is not overly ripe with material, anybody learning stud should really buy this book, and any other player who is not overly immersed in the game, looking to improve, should benefit as well. combine that with the tight read and cogent explanations, and it is a worthwhile purchase for many stud and horse players as well as those looking to play those games or broaden their horizons into a game that is really well worth learning, even for hold 'em fanatics.

Good Book...

The book is incremental in its teaching approach. The basic strategy first laid out will not make you money but it will limit your losses greatly. Then later in the book Ashley Adams covers how to play more hands. If you don't play more hands the antes will eat up the money you may make. But, this approach will keep the reader from going bankrupt while they develop a feel for the game. If the reader follows the author's program they will relearn some of the overly conservative strategies later....when they are ready. Coupled with real experience it is probably the only book you need to play lower limit cash games.

The book covers some good ancillary information regarding Casino play in general.

Then again I am not big on books being necessary for good play. Any book introductory would probably do well enough to get you started. The Roy West book is supposed to be good also.

After the beginner has read 7 CARD STUD by Roy West he is ready for WINNING 7-CARD STUD which is the next logical step. It's well organized and in-depth in it's practical approach to introducing the novice to the finer points of 7 Stud. While Texas Hold'em is exciting and getting all the attention these days, 7 Card Stud is the thinking man's form of poker and this book will help you play it well.

This book is fantastic. I went from having casual knowledge of stud poker to being extremely confident at the tables. I had read a number of Ashley Adams articles and he is not your average writer. He has an extraordinary ability to recognize the abilities of the reader and not give him or her too much to handle.

After reading the first 50 pages, I was quite disappointed at the starting hand requirements and put the book down. I started playing and had a winning session of 7 card stud. I had thought playing tight and waiting for good starting hands was boring, but tight is right. And winning is definitely not boring. I immediately finished the book and absorbed the advanced material later in the book and I am astonished at how great this book has helped me.

While the Harrington on Hold'em books are the best ever written for NL tournament poker, this book is the best you can get for your library in 7 card stud. You might eventually advance beyond the concepts of this book and need a higher level book, but I don't think the average casual player with be sitting at stakes beyond $3/6 or $5/10.

5 Stars, I highly recommend this book to everyone. Everything you need to know in one book to become a winner. You will appreciate the work Ashley Adams put into this book to help players understand the complexities of 7 card stud. He is truly one of the best at teaching poker that I have ever read.

Okay, I had played craps before but I was not an expert by any means. I understood certain basics but wanted to learn more, and even a system or strategy. I picked this book and it provided everything I needed. The background is well described and most importantly points out the bets that a standard user should stay away from (i.e., the bets in which the odds are not in the players favor). The strategy presented (for playing with the dice) is very comprehensive but easily described. Personally, I wanted something simple that I could remember in any state of mind. :) Regardless, this system single-handedly paid for my trip to Vegas for a buddy's wedding. I never played high-roller tables, nor did I make extreme bets (in my case). The system allowed me to maximize my profits and minimize my losses while the table was "hot". If you are interested in learning craps and using an easy system, this is the book for you.

I became acquainted with Silberstang's writing way back in the 1980s and his basic ideas do hold up. You will not really learn an advantage method in this book, but a betting system that does cut the house edge to its minimum. Silberstang's writing is crisp and clear, his experiences show that he is a player, and his knowledge of the game for random players is top notch.

This is a good book to start your craps playing career.

If you have no idea how to play craps then i will say as all other books it explains the basic bets etc. The problem this book had, along with many other craps books i have bought is that 70% of the book is basic craps primer, 10% are about stories of big rolls, 10% is about comps and casino management and about 5 pages are about actual strategy to use while playing the game.

Drumroll please, the big strategy that will make you tons of money can be summarized in 3 sentences.

bet the pass line with double odds. After each Pass win without a loss, press the bet up. At the end it has you betting something like $500 on the pass and 1000 on the odds bet. here is the problem:

In order to get to that level the shooter, get this, has to make something liek 11 points. I have seen some shooters make 5 or 6 points but 11 is very very rare.

This book in a sentence:

After each pass with double odds win press your pass and odds bet. if you lose on 3 shooters go home.

Won't appeal to the DVD generation of magicians.
It is densely written in the style of times gone by.
If you can get past this (i.e can read, and can interpret instructions that are written, instead of being spoonfed)you will have all the moves you could ever need.

This is a great book loaded with great material, however some of the material is false. For instance, the Faro Shuffle section is all entirely wrong. It is thought by some that this was done on purpose, and if so it is entirely unethical of the authors. Regardless, this book has a plethora of fantastic material, and I highly recommend it.

This book is comprehensive in scope-it covers about all of the basic techniques the card worker needs to know. It goes far beyond this, however. All techniques taught are described in *excruciating* detail so as to leave nothing to the imagination. It also includes ongoing words of advice on and entire chapters devoted to the _real_ secrets of magic: misdirection and presentation. As if all this were not MORE than sufficient to recommend the book, it's written in a very witty, eloquent, and entertaining style that makes it a joy to simply read. But wait! There's more! Please find enclosed numerous card effects worthy of the most discriminating audiences at less than the cost of your favorite magic dealer's Trick O' the Day. With regard to my own experience I've read this book near to tatters and have annotated nearly every other page-I got my money's worth and so will you.

I am not sure who this book is written by.

It's an encyclopedia, of card handling.

There is no connection from one chapter to the next and unless you are an english major, you will simply be very very frustrated trying to understand what to do and how.

This book is not for beginner but rather someone who has a very good grasp of handling cards and would like to know more than he already knows.

This book is like an english dictionary, you being a foreigner who knows half a dozen words. You'll find yourself trying to decrypt half the instructions. Do you have the time and patience for it? I sure didn't. You'll find this to be mysterious text that might become clear to you some day, unless you already know how to do half the material in it to begin with.

I bought this book at the same time I bought "winning low limit" by lee jones. Had previously read ITH by mathew hilgger, but lee jones's text is so great in the way it presents strategic information, I now prefer it to ITH.
As for this book, I have no idea what the people who say this is a great introduction for hold'em are talking about.
The presentation is confusing, the book contains a lot of fillers with little valuable information. Rules of hold'em aren't that complicated that requires the extensive chapters on reading the board as this necessarly comes with experience and doesn't take that long.
As for strategy, I admit Miller is a bit more agressive than lee jones(which depends on the stakes you play in) and does present very valuable ideas, but I think the presentation is less than functional for complete begginers, for whom this book is intended.

It is a cheap book...in all ways possible.

I have played poker for years, but Hold'Em is a very different game and Ed Miller's book Getting Started in Hold'Em is an excellent introduction. Other books I've bought seem to assume the reader already has some experience at Hold'em, but I was looking for information before sitting down to a game. Without condescending, Miller explains the game in detail and shows the differences in analysis and strategy from other poker games.

Best introductory text for the new player.

I agree with the reviewer that said that this book has replaced Lee Jones' book as the best introductory text for beginning players. Where I differ from most reviewers is in the idea that this is only a "beginners" book. I disagree. This book is great for anyone who plays poker including advanced players in that it acts as reinforcement for concepts we know but sometimes forget or ignore. It basically explains advanced concepts in a simple way and for that reason it is valuable to anyone. I remember that even though I was already a winning player when I read this book, it still improved and strengthened my understanding of concepts such as pot equity, the danger of hand domination, importance of aggression and so on. If I had a close friend just starting out in hold 'em, this would be the first book I would recommend to him, followed by Millers other classic, "Small stakes hold 'em- Winning big with expert play."

Great book, you can't go wrong with this one.

I've got this book in my bag right now. And I've bought over 20+ poker books; a half-dozen DVDs; and plenty of poker magazines.

I'm rereading it to review some of the NL cash concepts...which one reviewer ridiculed...but I thought it made alot of sense...essentially its NL short stack cash strategy...play tight and put your stack in the middle with premium or very good hands. I like that he admitts...this probably won't make you the most popular guy at the table.

In other parts of the book...he goes over the concept of pot equity in an easy to understand fashion...which I still appreciate. After you read this book you're either aware of....or refreshed on...some very solid poker concepts/principles.

The NL tournament section is short...true. Nothing remarkable. But still useful for a beginner. I looked at it more as an add-on than anything else.

good luck

I am just learning to use the Tarot, and here is one of the best tips given to me by a friend with many years of experience with the Tarot. She told me to buy a second deck, tape each card of the deck onto a separate piece of notebook paper, and keep them in a 3-ring binder. In this binder I keep notes of my impressions and what I am learning about each invidivual card while getting to know the cards names and meanings. I decided this miniture deck would be perfect to tape into my notebook/journal. This has been a priceless learning tool, because I can look back and read notes I made months ago, notes I would have otherwise forgotten.

I purchased another miniature deck because the size is so portable. Now I carry the cards with me everywhere, and when I have a few free moments I'll pull them out. The smaller cards are easier to work with, and this is the deck for you if descretion is important. The prints and coloring on both of my miniature decks are just as clear and vibrant as the larger deck--no distortions whatsoever.

I love most Rider Waite decks but this miniature deck turned out to be a big flop. The scanning job was done poorly and some of the figures look distorted. The standard miniture deck is a lot better. Also the coloring isn't sooo special for my personal taste. I still prefer the original version light colors to Albano's or even to the Universal version.

I recently found a Lo Scarabeo edition of the 1910 version and the colors are just perfect.

I had wanted the Rider Waite tarot for years. I saw it at a local mall they had a bunch of them. But at $18 I thought it wasn't worth the price for a deck that I personally could've drawn myself. I don't know about thinking up the idea for the first modern tarot and thinking up the actual pictures of the deck, but the artwork was so mediocre and not life-like and unrealistic that I personally could've drawn and painted these. Don't believe me? I got a grade of A B- in college Art 101 in the division III local school and was Art 101- painting. I just didn't think a deck with such mediocre artwork would be the same price as the much better Aleister Crowley Thoth tarot. Then one day I was looking on the wensite for a local bookstore named after a famous person. I saw a bunch of different versions of the Rider Waite tarot. I was debating between the pocket and miniature. The pocket was cool it was about the size of the small version of the Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot. I also have the larger version of the same Crowley deck. With that large of a size for a deck of cards you need a dinner table or similar just to have room for most technical spreads. The smaller one you can do readings on a shelf the size of about a laptop computer. That was the size of any tarot deck I preferred- it was much for practical because it took up less space and could be easily carried in a bigger man's pocket. After I did some measuring and thinking I decided on the miniature. I was going to get the pocket but the miniature was only $12. That's a good deal for a deck of tarot cards. Most decks of any quality are usually like 20 bucks, so about half the price for a smaller version of the same deck. The good things about this deck are: Arthur Waite was a famous occultist, writer and Golden Dawn member, - this deck was the first modern deck and became the standard, - the price was about half that of most really good decks for a smaller version, - the smaller the deck is the more practical because you don't need a family sized dinner table or the living room floor to do readings. The bad was only I estimated the size of the cards 2 by 3 inches. It was smaller than the small Crowley tarot. When I got it, I was expected a little bigger but it fit in the palm of my mind. But it's not so small as to be flimsy. They should've made it 3 by 5 like the Thoth deck. And as I stated the artwork on the cards was so mediocre I could make a reprint version of this same deck at a little lower quality only because I wasn't its creator. The Rider Waite tarot in any version is one of the only decks I'd recommend because it was made by a famous occultist who knows what their talking about. I like this deck because it is good and portable.

Arrived quickly. Excellent book for understanding how to recognize tells with yourself and others and what to do about it. Helps you get over the 'bad beat' and prepares you for long sessions and keys to success. Recommended for advanced players who care about getting over the emotional aspects of the game and having good mindset to continue making good decisions.

Reading this book makes a lot of sense. Good advice on bankroll management, and most importantly tells you what you need to do to help you avoid tilt. Tilt is probably the main cause of a downswing, avoiding tilt is important. After reading this book I feel cool and calm about playing poker knowing that it will all even out in the long run. I also like how it stresses that poker is just a game and that there are other things in life.

I mostly play online. Saw myself, my relationship to the game and other players differently as I read the book over a 3 week period. My results have improved. Check out the Table of Contents. Book is put together well. I'm considering purchasing their Statistics and probability book but I've got a stack of Harrington books waiting to be read.

The second best poker book I've ever read!

You can't be a PPP without having read this book.
Seriously, poker it's a game of man played with cards, and this book will teach you how to master your attitude to that.
Great.

You may not need this book, but you do need to know and do what it says

So you may as well buy it. I'm an online pro poker player and have been for about 2 years now and I can say with 100% certainty that this book has increased my profits. I've read it about 3.5 times. If you have already mastered your tilt you may not need this, but it has lots of good information about different types of tilt you may not be familiar with. It also gives convincing points about BR management. Give it to your always busto friends.

But most likely you need it. When people ask me which book helped my poker game most out of my collection this is currently the one I point to.

This is the most innovative game on the market for developing self understanding. I have been playing this game for years and now can laugh at the issues that come up whilst playing this wonderful game.
A quick solution for extremely difficult situations if one really wants answers!

My sister gave us this game-- I had never heard of it before. My husband and I played it last night and it was fabulous. I don't think I would play this game with people I did not know well or who were not open to this concept as the strucuture of the game is terrific, but the experience you have depends largely on your personal involvement. If you stand back and expect the game to "do its magic" on you-- you will likely be disappointed. Instead, it is all about the interaction and participation-- reflecting and responding and sharing insights.

I can't wait to play it again and really want to try it with 4 people next time. Highly recommended.

It's become a tradition with a friend of mine to meet on our birthdays each year. We read each others (tarot and other) cards and it gives us a chance reflect on the past year - our experiences, lessons learned, future plans. The cards often provide additional insight. I thought the Transformation Game might provide the same kind of feedback and give us both more a chance to participate; but the game was tedious, the directions unclear and some of the game feedback was not very positive. (One feedback was along the lines of "you haven't handled anger well, take 5 pain cards). I can see the intentions of the game and how it might work under some circumstances. But I think we'll stick with cards from now on. They are more specific, insightful and positive. Also cheaper.

Finally a board game, that is not based on owerpowering/winning over/undercutting others. The whole game is based on generating more connection between players, on all levels of depth. Spiritual (some could say New Age-y or Buddhist) in setup, the game leads each player through being born, and existence in the physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual realms until the player (the first one or each) blasts out through the final transformation. All this happens not before everyone needs to answer questions, act under certain circumstances, make decisions and express support towards others participating. The game includes hundreds of cards accompanying the movements on the board and describing what needs to be done at each step. I really liked how the game also helped to integrate the different world-view and the newly learned insights into my life by encouraging to write them down or follow them up after the game. Both good and bad events in life are handled with a nonjudgmental atmosphere encouraging equanimity in life and in our choices, overseen and supported by angels of different quality from the included angel card deck.

We played this game with 4 people all over the age of 25. We started at 10 pm had 3 games and stopped at 1am. It was the funniest, most creative card game we've ever played, and this is a group of avid gamers.
I would recommend this game to anyone who loves to use their imagination and isn't too hung up on plot holes lol. We're going to create cards that can interrupt when ever there is a Monty Python reference or a Princess Bride parallel, just to name a scant few.
Hours of fun, loads of laughs and only as much competition as you want. (My take on it is to see how long a person can go with a farm animal card and an island....dang it that's a Lost reference)

Really fun and playable other ways!

This is a really great card game and it incorporates lots of great fairy tale elements. I brought it to a sleepover with a bunch of my friends and after having a really fun time playing it the normal way we invented a new way. We each took 10 cards then spent five minutes making up a short story based on those cards. It gave way to our inside joke, "Once upon a time, there was a door!"

Good game for creative individuals or a classroom setting

This game is for 2 to 6 players and is recommended for ages 8 and up, although all you need to play are basic reading skills and a healthy imagination. The game consists of a 16 page rulebook, 112 "Once Upon A Time" storytelling cards, and 56 "Happy Ever After" ending cards. Blank cards are included, so players can add their own ideas if desired. The object of the game is to use up all your storytelling cards, and end up by playing your ending card. All the other players are trying to direct the story towards their own ending. There are two ways to interrupt the current "storyteller" and take over the direction of the story.

The "One Upon A Time" cards are divided into five different groups as follows: Characters, Items, Places, Aspects, and Events.

Examples of ending or "Happy Ever After" cards include: "And there they sit to this very day", "As dawn broke they could see it was perfect" - and my own personal favorite - "And he listened to his mother's advice from then on."

Could be educational as well when used in a classroom setting (such as literature, theatre arts, etc.) to explore the different elements of a good story and how they are woven together.

Love it

Busted both the Once Upon a Time deck and the expansion deck (Dark tales) today in the class; grade 7s, quite verbally talented. They took to it immediately. It reinforces basic conversation skills - waiting for a pause before interrupting and listening. They've been at it for nearly an hour without any direction from me. I just ordered 4 packs of the make your own story cards.

Linking it to any creative writing unit would be easy.
