I am always looking for what I think is the best sales book to recommend. This is the book for B2B sales this year. A very high sales performer, Bill Stinnett has really hit the mark with this book. If you coupled the strategies and methods of Stinnett with the strategies and tactics used by Bill Freese, (Question Based Selling) you could build the ultimate sales machine in your company. I am just blown away at the thoroughness, quality of process and thought that has gone into this book. When I asked Bill for a review copy he arranged to call me to find out where I was coming from and what I did with the reviews. This gentleman dots the i's and crosses the t's.

Buy it, read it, and keep it on your read often, do not lend bookshelf. Of course if you are content with the status quo, this book will only make you realize how much more there is out there. I am really pumped by Stinnett!B0012FBC9A5002007-03-11An Invaluable ResourceIf you want to improve your sales and connect better with your customers, buy this book! Each chapter is full of "aha!" insights that will enhance your understanding of your customer's needs.

Stinnett is an apostle of the "diagnostic approach" to selling, in which the seller undertakes a process of discovery to identify what results the customer is trying to achieve. The focus is always on the customer--his motive, the urgency of reaching the objective, the consequences of doing nothing and remaining where he is, the expected payback from attaining the objective, the resources the customer has available to devote to the effort, and the risks he will face in moving in a new direction. These "Action Drivers," Stinnett explains, govern and control just about every buying decision. If a sale falls through, chances are that one of these "Action Drivers" was missing.

In the first half of the "Think Like Your Customer," Stinnett analyzes how buyers evaluate their options and assess risk. Weeks after reading the book, I still open it up and turn to the chart on page 49, where Stinnett lists the eight major types of value your customer may be attempting to derive from a relationship with you and your company. They are:

Economic Value (increasing revenue, reducing costs, better utilization of assets)
Emotional Value (need for recognition and security)
Simplicity Value (making the easy choice and reducing headaches)
Relational Value (repaying loyalty and commitment; avoiding potential conflict)
Political and Image Value (looking good to others)
Guidance or Advice Value (access to expert advice)
Quality Value (reducing product defects; better service)
Time Value (shorten time to market; free up time for other things)

Stinnett points out for each of these denominations of value, there is a corresponding denomination of risk. Since value and risk are two sides of the same coin, a seller can increase the perceived value of his offering--and overcome prospects' perennial objections about price, by focusing carefully on the customer's concerns and reducing risk in the areas of value that are important to that particular customer.

In the second half of the book, Stinnett dissects the anatomy of the customer's buying process. Instead of focusing our attention on how we sell, Stinnett says we should concentrate on how the customer buys and--more importantly--what affirmative steps we can take to help the buyer move through each stage of the buying process that the buyer needs to traverse in order to buy from us.

Nothing in "Think Like Your Customer" is startlingly new; rather, Stinnett teaches how we can turn our thinking inside out and look at a transaction from the perspective of the buyer.

This book is well organized and highly readable; the reasoning is persuasive, and the advice is immensely practical. Immediately after reading "Think Like Your Customer," I began to conduct conversations with my clients using the tools and skills Stinnett provides. The difference in the quality of the communication was nothing short of amazing. Buy this book and profit from its wisdom!

B0012FBC9A5222007-01-31How to understand the high-probability customer's purchase process
Bill Stinnett concludes the Introduction to this book with a remarkable statement: "Now let me be clear: I don't take credit for any of these truths [culled from a variety of other sources]. I didn't make them up. They have been there all along, waiting to be observed. My life's work has been to recognize them and organize them in an effort to advance my own career and yours." Stinnett refers to popular sales methodologies which include Strategic Selling®, Solution Selling®, and SPIN Selling®. Whatever the given methodology, its ultimate outcome is an increase in revenue which, Stinnett duly acknowledges, can be accomplished in three ways: maximizing sales velocity, increasing average "deal size" or the "wallet" share, and increasing customer loyalty and satisfaction.

Throughout Stinnett's narrative, his emphasis is on presenting and then explaining "a winning strategy" (actually an aggregate of several strategies) to increase his reader's understanding of how and why customers buy. The chapter titles for Part 1, "Why Customers Buy," correctly indicate how practical his approach is: What Customers Think About, What Customers Really Want, How Customers Perceive Value and Risk, The Cause and Effect of Business Value, and The Value of Customer Relationships. It should be noted that, along the way, Stinnett also offers excellent advice with regard to all manner of "how not to's" and "why nots" when formulating and then implementing what should be a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective game plan to increase revenue.

To me, some of the most valuable material in the book is presented in Chapter 8 as Stinnett explains how to reverse-engineer the buying process. That is, in Stephen Covey's words, "begin with the end in mind." This is a process by which to identify what must happen before a given customer is ready to buy. Previously in Chapter 2, Stinnett introduced what he calls his "Customer Results Model" which involves a process that begins with fully understanding the prospective buyer's current situation. I agree with Stinnett that there is no inherent value (as perceived by customers) in the solution offered by a given product or service unless it will achieve the prospective buyer's desired outcomes or results. As the former CEO of Home Depot once observed, people don't buy a quarter-inch drill; they buy quarter-inch holes. In this context, the quarter-inch drill fills a gap between a current, often an urgent need and filling it.

One of this book's several reader-friendly devices is the isolation of key points presented in bold face. This facilitates and accelerates frequent review of those points later. For example:

"It's a lot easier to sell somebody something if it's positioned as a way to help them achieve a goal or an objective that they already want to achieve." (Page 15)

" Far more critical than what is valuable and important to your customer is why it is valuable and important to them." (Page 65)

"A deep, meaningful, high-trust relationship with a client who has no business disparity [i.e. compelling need], no motive to take action, or no means to take action even if they did have a motive, equals no sale. It's just a relationship." (Page 105)

"It's not what we do in our sales process, but what the customer does in their buying process, that really matters." (Page 135)

"We should spend 80 percent of our time and effort on the 20 percent of our opportunities that carry a strong urgency, motive, and consequence, because these are the deals that can close." (Page 179)

None of Stinnett's key points is a head-snappy revelation, nor does he make that claim. However, all of them - preferably reviewed in the sequence in which they are presented - offer valuable reminders of where the proper focus and emphasis should be during a high-probability customer's purchase process.

There are dozens of excellent books on the art and science of sales, and this is one of the best.

Well-done!B0012FBC9A511112006-04-02Valuable tools to use right awayWhen I read books on persuasion, I'm looking for effective tools. One of the reasons I like this book is that it has valuable information I don't remember seeing elsewhere.

The chapter on what customers really want is worth far more than the price of the book. It identifies the factors that must exist for a customer to buy from us. And it teaches how to weave key questions about these factors into our informal conversation with the customer.

Another example: The book teaches how to learn what specific results a customer really wants and how to tie that to our product or service. The specific "result" a customer wants may differ greatly from the generic benefits we assume our product or service's features provide.

I've found that using Stinnett's tools to focus even more on how the customer thinks increases sales and the number of satisfied customers.
B0012FBC9A5442005-12-19Pack the sales punchesThis is one of the best books on selling I'd read in years. In the software world, hard-sell is dead. Try consultative selling the Bill Stinnet way. I used some of the ideas in the book eg., mapping out the buying process and offering it as as part of an important visual information to the gatekeeper to reach the decision maker - and it works! I have used the concept of getting the buyer to think about destination "C" with us rather than trying to be too focused on the offer in "B". There is also a section on how to qualify a prospect with ideas that are worth committing to memory. A combination of Bill's ideas and my experience has turned many of my well qualified prospects into paying customers today.

If you are a career saleperson then this one is definitely for you.

How to capture customers by learning to think the way they do

The most common complaint Bill Stinnett hears from his corporate clients is that would-be vendors and suppliers "just don't understand our business." I don't know about you, but the real information you need from the doctor to start basal and bolus injections or pumping insulin is minimal or sketchy at best. There are so many factors influencing just where to start and where to go from there that a physician just can't spend that kind of time with you. Maybe it's very inconvenient or impossible to get to an endocrinologist or go to classes. This book will give you the information you need to avoid doing more harm than good! Formulas are there for titrating your bolus/bolus/pump insulin based on weight, based on your personal rate of absorption, what to do when things go wrong, all the what, where, whens and hows you need to know to get your blood sugars under control. There are also plenty of websites mentioned to follow up on any further research. It really is a MUST HAVE book!15692443675002008-09-23Think like a PancreasGreat book for someone beginning insulin injections. This book takes the medical language and translates it into everyday practical advice. I am on my second reading of this book and every time I read it I learn something new. This is a good book to mark up or highlight because of the information that is present. I would recommend this book for any body with type 1 who wants to improve there control or who have just been diagnosed. 15692443675112008-06-24Great InformationI ordered this book after reading the good reviews on it and I found it to be an excellent read. My 5 year old daughter is Type 1 diagnosed a year ago. I read as much as I can on diabetes and found this book answered those little nagging questions I have always had. We have a great endo but they can only give you so much information at each appointment. I think alot of learning about handling ones diabetes is trial and error and Gary Scheiner brought that up in the book along with ways to try to figure out what works for you. I highly recommend this book!15692443675002008-05-12Excellent resourceThis book is a very practical guide to insulin use that is a must-read for anybody trying to maximize their blood sugar control. We got it from the library first, but then realized we'd be coming back to it repeatedly and needed to have our own copy. Highly recommended!
There are dozens of books about managing diabetes, but none focuses specifically on using insulin.
Much can be learned from this book and help one form good habits for success.07881997065002006-03-10Think Like A Champion : Building Success One Victory at a Time In review of the autobiography I read, Think Like a Champion: Building Success One Victory at a Time by Mike Shanahan, I learned a great deal about succeeding on the football field. But more importantly, I learned about succeeding in life.

The book begins with Shanahan in college at Eastern Illinois University. Shanahan played quarterback on the Eastern Illinois football team and was routinely tackled during games. However, after being fiercely tackled during one particular game, Shanahan was rushed to the emergency room. Within hours Shanahan had undergone surgery to remove a badly ruptured kidney, and was soon told he could never play football again.

Wanting to remain close to the game he loved, Shanahan decided to try his hand at coaching. His first coaching stop was in Oklahoma as a part-time assistant coach for the University of Oklahoma Sooners. That year the Sooners won the National College Football Championship, and Shanahan was soon offered coaching jobs at other universities. He was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Eastern Illinois University, and at the University of Florida before moving to the professional ranks. As a professional football coach, Shanahan coached teams like the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos. Under Shanahan's direction, both of these teams won Super Bowl Championships.

Throughout the book, Shanahan states that he has learned something from every step he has taken in his coaching career. He notes that coaching football was not what he had wanted to do with his life; he wanted to play the game. But he acknowledges that he would probably never have made the pros as a player and would never have had the opportunities he had experienced as a coach.

In the book, Shanahan identifies a few key things he says are critical for success on and off the football field; preparing, sacrificing, competing, and persevering. Without any one of these items, success would not be possible. Shanahan also says that life may take you a direction you weren't planning to go, but that it is important to do your best, no matter what life has to offer.

After reading this book, I have a new perspective on coaching, and a new outlook on life. Hearing that perspective shared by a future Hall of Fame candidate, like Mike Shanahan, makes it even more powerful. Think Like a Champion: Building Success One Victory at a Time was more than a book about coaching the game of football. It was about being in, and succeeding at the game of life.
07881997065552002-08-15Building success one victory at a time.I have heard this advice before: If you want to be successful
at something, find the most successful person you can in that area, listen to what they say, and try to follow it. Well, its hard to imagine a football coach more sucessful than Mike Shanahan. Here's a guy who started with a dream: to be a head football coach, started as an unpaid volunteer for a college team, and worked his way to be one of the best, most respected, coaches in the NFL (winning 2 consecutive Superbowls) at a young age.
The great thing is, he has written a book that is designed to help people win beyond football, in any area of life. Shanahan breaks it down for you: the way he prepares, some struggles he's had, some ways he motivates people (including the little things that we learn are so critical), very good wisdom concerning life, and a lot more. Also very critical is the fact that this book is very easy to read and understand.
You even get a bonus section in each chapter written by some of the greatest people and minds in football: Paul Tagliabue, Jerry Rice, Bill Walsh, John Elway, Deion Sanders, Steve Young, George Seifert, Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, Al Michaels, and more. They give their own take on the subject being discussed in the chapter, which is not only informative, but like the book itself, filled with wisdom.
The chapters consist of 16 basic areas to focus on to become successful, things like: Preparing (all of life is preparation, and not preparing is preparing to fail), Sacrificing (don't expect to get anything good done without sacrifice, if it was easy, everyone would do it), Learning (without learning, you will be hopelessly stuck where you are), Detailing (the devil is definitely in the details and that's where things often break down). This is just a taste of the wisdom in this book. Highly recommended for people looking to improve themselves.07881997065332001-05-25What a Success Story! Motivational!A die-hard Broncos fan from the days dying watching those ridiculous striped socks and watching Fran Tripuka get killed, what a job Shanahan did turning it around into two Super Bowls in a row.
Learning of his background and his principles makes me now not only a more avid Bronco fan, but also a Shanahan fan as well. His perseverance from the days of his kidney injury to how he became part of Sooner coaching staff till today is truly one of principles of success through hard work, not gifts or who you know or any of the other myths most people who never get anywhere fall for and are unmotivated. Most of them just don't ever want to work hard at anything, but have it handed to them. Shanahan disproves all that bunk and shows how it came to be. Unbelievable that when given the Raiders head-job, didn't even have the downpayment for a house.
This guy is very endearing to so many of us who never had the backgrounds for those connections, but wanting something bad enough, and always believing it, achieve it one goal at a time.
Great advice, especially appreciate his concern for balance.
Excellent read. Thanks, Mike, from a new fan and admirer.07881997065222001-02-03"...if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail."Straight-forward, crisply articulated and with practically no unnecessary fluff, Mike Shanahan's book, "Think Like a Champion," compellingly argues that the game of life is basically won or lost before the "players" take the field. Shanahan asserts his point of view over sixteen easy-to-digest chapters (each about ten pages or less) on the diffent tenets of becoming the best at what you do.
What I liked about this book is that while the author culls specific examples from his football career, the "moral of the story" is clearly applicable to ANYONE seeking to become the best in any endeavor. Offering an excellent, enjoyable read to both sports enthusiasts and non enthusiasts alike, the author's writing style is to neither excessively arm-wave nor make unsupported generalizations.
In fact, part of the Shanahan's credibility here is in his willingness to name names when providing examples of people living up to a credo espoused in a given chapter or more dramatically, falling short.
Written with humility, Shanahan's book leaves the reader feeling that there is nothing magical to becoming a huge success -- other than having a plan and putting in the blood, sweat and tears required to make that plan a success. Or as the author concludes, citing legendary coach Vince Lombardi, "Your quality of life is in direct proportion to your commitment to excellence." So true.Mike Shanahan believes that the game of life is won--or lost--before you take the field. You can't win any important game without a plan for how to win it, nor live a successful life or pursue a rewarding career without a clear outcome in mind and a detailed plan for how to achieve your goals.
Coach Shanahan knows about achieving big goals. Armed with his plan, he and his world champion Denver Broncos have elevated themselves to spectacular levels of performance. In three amazing years, they transformed a "mediocre," aging" franchise--and their legendary quarterback who just "couldn't win the big game--into the most feared powerhouse in the league; with back-to-back Super Bowl rings to prove it.
Now, in Think Like a Champion, Shanahan opens his playbook to show the X's and O's of winning, a detailed game plan to help you storm the field with foolproof strategies, confidence, and the indomitable will to win. Shanahan's principles of success are as deceptively simple as they are challenging:
"Preparation is key." Having prepared for every possible contingency, Shanahan expects to win every game he plays. He's usually right.
"Whatever the sacrifice, it is worth the price of pursuing your passion." Give every game everything you've got, or don't bother to suit up.
"Break down the competition's weakness and learn from their strengths." There's a system to studying game films, to observing your competitors on their home field before the big game. Apply it every time you enter a new market, pitch to a new customer, or face a critical decision.
"Pick great leaders and give them the power to inspire." There's a John Elway on your team. Give him the ball, and let him lead.
"Set huge goals." Hey, this isn't going to be easy. "It's about work ethic and balance." In short, it's about believing that achieving the impossible is all in a day's work.
Everything in Mike Shanahan's life has prepared him to write this powerful book. He has worked with some of the best and some of the most difficult owners and coaches in the game, and he has coached a roster of players ranging from underachievers to All-Pros. In the ultra-competitive world of the NFL, he is a champion among champions. With his innovative mind, tenacity, and determined leadership, Shanahan has risen to the elite coaching ranks in the NFL. Armed with his vision, and these proven success principles, you can improve your chances on Game Day--or any day of the week.
By becoming only the fifth coach in history to lead his team to consecutive Super Bowl victories, Mike Shanahan of the Denver Broncos has certainly shown that he is a winner. In Think Like a Champion, he explains (with help from Denver Post sportswriter Adam Schefter) just how he reached this rarefied level and exactly what it takes to join him there.
Even though Shanahan snared his first NFL head-coaching job at the tender age of 36 and joined its most elite ranks within just 10 years, he did not reach the top without working hard and paying careful attention to the steps he took to get there. And while football fans may find his examples more illuminating and entertaining than those who don't follow the game, chapters based on 16 traits he attributes to his professional and personal triumphs--including preparing, sacrificing, believing, taking risks, and persevering--inspiringly recount his principles and practices in a way that anyone can understand and emulate. In the chapter on setting goals, for example, Shanahan reveals that he is an inveterate list-maker. Each night, he notes, all tasks for the following day are carefully scripted so he can constantly review them, ingrain them into his thinking, and then check them off when they are done. "If you have a plan, and if you have your direction laid out, you can chart your progress to your dreams at each stop along the way," he writes. "And, just as important, all along the way you can see how far you've come." --Howard RothmanB000CC49USThe Winner Within1414318022Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life0385481225Finding a Way to Win: The Principles of Leadership, Teamwork, and MotivationB000C4SGOGDo You Love Football?! : Winning with Heart, Passion, and Not Much SleepB000HWYNXQSuccess Is a Choice1061348jp-unknown144258011Specialty Stores283155Books11086921General26Sports1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books1419683322http://www.amazon.com/How-Think-Like-CEO-Leader/dp/1419683322%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D1419683322590306http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51T1%2BOnyfaL._SL75_.jpg7549http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51T1%2BOnyfaL._SL160_.jpg160105http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51T1%2BOnyfaL.jpg500328Michael F. These are the financial metrics that you should know like the back of your hand. Remember that with these metrics you will be focusing on what your C-Level prospect worries about every single day.
By reading this book, when you meet with the C-level executive, you can get the conversation to revolve around his specific challenges.
As Mark Kuta says, learn to talk like "It looks like your penetration strategy has yielded solid results. How are you dealing with the challenges of your top line increasing 36 percent year over, while gross margins tighten?", instead of dealing with generalities.

Why this is important to a C-Level executive? Most all CEO's watch the sales numbers closely. The fact of the matter is, many Wall Street analysts look for growth on the "top line" as much as they do on the bottom line. Reading this book already helped me make a sale, by learning to look at the sale from the standpoint of the executive of the company I was dealing with.

09713031265112008-01-09Hone an edgeThoughtfully constructed. A surprisingly value added read. A book to refer to, profit by, and read again.09713031265112008-01-07This one belongs at the top of your list! This book helped me to land a major account recently and I'm getting better traction with current prospects. Mark has done a wonderful job of helping the reader understand the profit engine of any business and using this knowledge to build a powerfully effective sales strategy by aligning it with the CEO's profit strategy.

I've read hundreds of business books and this is one of the best I've ever read for helping a sales professional get inside the mind of a big company CEO. Mark Kuta's premise is that managers at all levels of a company are dilegently working to implement the various strategies, tactics and plans that collectively promulgate the overall profit strategy of the CEO. And if you can understand the business "language" involved in this collective company process, you will posses the ability to successfully sell at any level in a company, including the "C" suite.

One of the key tools Mark Kuta uses is his Value Proposition, which he shows the reader how to develop from the perspective of the target company's CEO. Once developed, the Value Proposition can be used at any level in the company and still be effective because it will resonate with the company's internal messages generated by the CEO and senior management to its employees.

If the reader does not know how to read a company's financial statements, no problem. Mark takes the reader step-by-step through the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement, focusing on only the most important things to learn. The reader will come away with the 5 most important things to know from each of the three statements as well as how to use them together to develop a powerful sales strategy and value proposition.09713031265112007-12-26AwesomeI am a Business Coach and I am always reading books to learn and acquire the necessary tools to coach my clients. Ten pages into it, however, I understood why he'd given it to us. Reading "Think Like A CEO" is like a private lunch with Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch. I learned more reading it that Friday night than I did in two years of B-school, and woke up Saturday morning literally teeming with ideas, angles, and inspiration, wishing it was Monday so I could get back in the field and outsell my competitors. "Think Like A CEO" teaches you how CEO's think, enabling you to speak their language, push their buttons, sidestep their objections, and make them want--and pay for--whatever it is you're selling. Buy it, read it, implement a fraction of the strategies, and if it doesn't improve your numbers, you're in the wrong business. *** 2008 Axiom Business Book Award GOLD MEDALIST - SALES ***2008 Independent Publisher Award GOLD MEDALIST - BUSINESS *** Think Like a CEO outlines a Business Strategy focused on driving top line revenue. The tools and templates of the Wall Street Selling Methodology TM are unique and unlike any other sales method. This is not a book filled with fluff or feel goods that promise results. It is not a repackaging of personality definitions, and it doesn t walk you through ten or fifteen or twenty yes/no questions to tell you that your deal is qualified. This methodology will transform the way you approach your sales tasks, and allow you to compete and excel in this environment. Here are just a few sample questions that will take you less than 2 minutes to discover before you make that next call. 1. How is your prospect performing relative to its competitors? 2. Those already familiar with the highly acclaimed television series, E.R., no doubt recall especially dramatic portrayals of (quite literally) life-or-death crises. Members of real-world emergency room staffs confirm such moments really can and often do occur. They will also tell you about extended periods when there are few (if any) persons in need of medical care. In this context, I am reminded of fire departments where hours of boredom are interrupted by sudden emergencies. Most of the time, most organizations seem to function crisis-free until....
What Friedman has written is a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective response to this important question: Which resources, strategies, and tactics are essential to prepare for, cope with and then learn from a crisis?
There are other excellent books on the same general subject. For example, Blythe's Blindsided, Fink's Crisis Management, Lukaszewski's First Response, Myers' Manager's Guide to Contingency Planning for Disasters, and Harvard Business Review on Crisis Management. Most of them tend to focus on crises in major corporations. In addition to its value for such large enterprises, Friedman's book will be extremely valuable to family-owned businesses, smaller organizations, and individuals. A loss of power or a fire in a department store certainly qualifies as a crisis but corporate resources ensure financial recovery of the given location. That is not always true if a family-owned business were to encounter the same crisis even if it were sufficiently insured. The loss of day-to-day revenue could be fatal.
I also think Friedman's book will be highly beneficial to decision-makers in small-to-midsize companies which provide products and services to a major enterprise such as an airline, large office building or automobile manufacturer. Crisis management for clients who depend on us may be even more important than crisis management for our own organization. In fact, I think all such initiatives should be coordinated, indeed integrated, within a program guided and informed by Friedman's book. As he observes, each component of any crisis management program requires appropriate answers to the same two questions: "What if?" and "Then what?"
The Chinese character for the word "crisis" has two different meanings: peril and opportunity. As Friedman quite correctly suggests, crisis management worthy of the name must accommodate both.09718452045442003-05-26Everyday Crisis ManagementMay 2003 - Vol 8 No. 5
Reviewers Roundup

Thinking Like an Emergency Physician-----------------------------
By Mike Taigman

It seems like it's no longer possible to make it through a full day without becoming aware of some crisis in the world. As I travel around the world I hear people in restaurants talking about post-war Iraq, the possibility of suicide bombers in America, people being laid off in the travel industry, and states with billion dollar deficits. Those of us in EMS are pretty good at handling things that get thrown in our direction-but that doesn't mean we can't improve our skills.

In his book Everyday Crisis Management: How to Think Like an Emergency Physician, veteran emergency medicine physician, professor, and entrepreneur Mark L. Friedman, M.D., shares his strategies for crisis management. Mark has deeply explored the phases of crisis management, as is evident in his chapter on crisis preventions. He says, "As a long time advocate, I can tell you that prevention as a strategy suffers from one major shortcoming. It lacks drama. You don't see the heart attack you prevented or the crime that's never committed. People uninjured in a motor vehicle crash often ascribe their avoidance of injury to `good luck' rather than good automotive design."
He applies his strategies to event management, business crisis, personal crisis, disaster management, and terrorism. He shares tips and tricks for managing crises in all forms by packaging them in the kind of real life emergency medicine stories we used to tell each other at Denny's before HIPAA.
Friedman has also included exercises at the end of each chapter to help drive your learning home. As I read through the exercises it became apparent that if someone in a leadership position at an EMS organization went through them step by step, they would have produced a practical media crisis response plan, a disaster plan, an event management plan, and would have increased their personal ability to handle a crisis. Pretty good results from an easy to read book packed with good stories.
Mike Taigman is an obsessive student, a thought provoking educator, and a prolific author. He peruses the latest business books, management journals, and cutting edge conferences searching for concepts that EMS leaders can use to cultivate their effectiveness. Additionally he has run over 23,000 EMS calls as a paramedic. ...09718452045562003-01-03A new perspective on crisis managementAs a crisis management consultant myself, I try to read as much as I can on the subject.
Behavior analysis is so simply explained in the book and it can be practiced in every living room, the car, working with animals especially horses(my world). When my young blind throughbred became progressively blind, I continued the functional assessment and behavioral diagnostics that I initited when when he was rescued, starved and very abused. It took a year to shape him into a proud champion in hunter-jumper events. After a year of magic, he became progressively blind almost overnight. I had known for awhile that he as losing his sight via results of ongoing systematic assessments which were compiled in my head. My first thought after total blindness was devastation, and then I thought of Bailey's favorite saying"shape, shape, and keep shaping".And within six(6)months I was riding that blind horse doing all the type riding as before except jumping although it would be possible to shape this behavior also.
My favorite "get-away" in Fl is Seaworld in Orlando. The whale program blows me away. They have about 24 behavior analysts that work with a big group of "killer whales" and their performances are unbelievable. When I was swimming with them and they would lift me onto their nose and give me a good high flip, all I could think was "shape, shape, and keep shaping". And all of a sudden I was so proud that I was a behavior analyst-and you could be one, too.Buy the book. Debbie Strother,MS,BCBA,CABA/Equine0805858881511112006-07-22The Thinking Behind ABAThis book is an ideal introduction to applied behavior analysis (ABA). It's brief, easy to understand, and interesting. It describes basic principles and procedures, then illustrates them with anecdotes, case studies, or research -- and does it all in nontechnical terms.

Topics are organized around 50 questions commonly asked about ABA. Most of the questions deal with what behavior analysis is and what analysts do: Is ABA psychotherapy? What does evidenced-based mean? Is all behavior learned?

A few questions deal with common misconceptions and myths about ABA (eg., is reinforcement bribery?). One myth Bailey and Burch correct concerns B. F. Skinner, the "godfather" of ABA. The myth is that Skinner raised one of his daughters, Deborah, in a box. The fact is that Skinner designed a better baby crib. The air was filtered, the temperature regulated, and instead of the usual crib bars (responsible for many injuries) there was a plate glass window. The "air crib," as Skinner called it, rested on a raised platform so that adults need not bend over to pick up or talk to the baby. Deborah was not "raised" in a box any more than you were. Yet the myth persists, along with the myths that Deborah was confined to a mental hospital or that she sued Skinner for abuse. Such stories are invented and passed along by people who want to sabotage ABA by maligning those connected with it. This book provides the facts.

The best thing about this book, though, is that it explains the thinking behind ABA. With this book you really can learn to think like a behavior analyst - and that can make a profound difference in your life. No matter what you do in life, you are going to interact with other people: spouse, children, parents, coworkers, clients, neighbors, strangers. Once you learn to look at behavior like a behavior analyst, you have a better chance of understanding your own and other people's behavior. You may also deal more effectively with behavior problems and in that way improve your life and the lives of others.

The authors have excellent credentials for writing this book. Both are board certified behavior analyst and Jon is one of the leaders in the field. Collectively, what they don't know about ABA probably isn't worth knowing.

This is not a textbook. (For an atypical example of a text, see my First Course in Applied Behavior Analysis.) But How to Think Like a Behavior Analyst is an easy and entertaining introduction to ABA that will lay the groundwork for more formal study. Anyone who will be dealing with behavior problems (and that means everyone) should read this book. Anyone who is considering a career in ABA must read this book. How to Think Like a Behavior Analyst is a revolutionary resource for understanding complex human behavior and making potentially significant quality of life improvements. Behavior analysts offer a worldview of the human condition different than almost any other professional perspective. To a behavior analyst, human behavior is largely learned and subject to change if the right variables are p
