Beautiful psychological text!!!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-03
I have to say, I have fallen in love with Dr. Putnam's writing through reading this book. Dr. Putnam is clearly well read and is highly experienced in the field of dissociative disorders. Many consider his other book on diagnosing and treating DID to be the BIBLE of working with DID patients.

In "Dissociation in Children and Adolescents," Dr. Putnam presents an eloquent mixture of empiracle data and psychological theory. Putnam presents the DBS (Discrete Behavioral State) theory of dissociation in rich detail and also touches on other matters such as psychopharmacology and neuroscience. At times, the text can become slightly dense, but only to a degree (I feel) that makes the book all the more delightful, challenging, and interesting to read.

Overall, I found Putnam's book to be insighful, interesting, and informative. I highly recommend this book not only to those interested in treating children and adolescents, but also to clinicians and students interested in dissociation--how it develops, differential diagnosis, and testing.

Furthermore, Putnam's book includes copies of the DES-II, the A-DES, and the CDC in the back of the book with the repeated and explicit blessing to copy, distribute, and use these tests. Of course, clinicians treating dissociation are probably well aware that Putnam and Carlson are the creators of the DES and its variants.

Again, I highly recommend this book to those treating dissociative patients. I even recommend it to clinicians who are *not* specifically interested in dissociation simply because, when spotted and correctly diagnosed, dissociation is treatable. Read this book!

The Economics of Justice and Charity
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-07
The subtitle of this wonderful little book is the perfect title for a review of it. For Distributism, or Distributivism, as it is also sometimes called, is truly the economics of justice and charity. It is an economic system which acknowledges and honors the very important truth that economics is truly a subset of ethics. Would that more of our politicians, and central bankers, who play such a terrible role in modern economics, appreciated this very important concept.

This excellent little book consists of a number of essays by Distributist apologists, like Hilaire Belloc and G.K. Chesterton. The quality of the writing varies, of course, somewhat. Nobody can touch Belloc's beautiful prose. And his essay in this series was the highlight, at least for me. But the entire collection is well worth the while. Read this imporant little book. And be richly blessed and well informed by the experience.

Invitation for a spiritual solution to environmental crisis
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-31
The authors approach the issue of environmental crisis from the Krishna consciousness point of view. The authors are part of ISKCON movement. The book should interest any one concerned about environmental crisis even if he is not interested in ISKCON movement. The part one introduces in a concise manner the nature of crisis in all contexts : water pollution, soil loss, acid rain etc. The second part discusses the case of meat eating. It looks at the issue primarily from ecological point of view. Third part is the key argument of the book. It identifies that all attempts to solve the crisis based on materialistic perspective, are bound to fail and it advocates the spiritual approach. It identifies the problem of sense-gratification as the root cause. Seeking nonmaterial happiness is the only solution. Fourth chapter identifies that modern science led to the crisis. To some extent, Capra and others have also argued like this. But this chapter is weak in detail. The later chapters delve into how ISKCON can offer the solution to the crisis. Discussions on Bhagavat-Gita is followed by discussion on karma and meat eating. Last chapter give details about various rural communities of ISKCON. There are short biographies of various people working in this direction. The book is well written. The layout is good. The number of pages is just 95. The book has index and bibliography. Ideal book for a gift.

A deeply impressive work

I was overwhelmed by the care taken in presenting a supposedly dry subject in a brilliant fashion,as brilliant as was the organization of the NYAS conference from which its contents were derived--speakers of such caliber as Sir Crispin Tickell participated ( unfortunately Linus Pauling was gravely ill at the time and could not be present)--so impressive was the program that the late Cyril Ponnamperuma of the Laboratory of Chemical Evolution wanted to attend. This book depicts a piece of history that should be a part of any serious library--I was delighted to send it as a gift to a finance professor at Boston College when it was first published.

This book was an assigned read for a CRM survey class and I certainly know why now. Thomas King goes into detail about what culture resource managment archaeology is and is not, while making the reading easy and humor-filled. This book was an excallent introduction to CRM archaeology for me as a student and also for anyone having to deal with any aspects of CRM!!!!!

Superb Starting Point For Understanding EC Research!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-18
Boy, oh boy! This is a wonderful text!

Glenda Naughton has written on deconstruction, politics, and ethics in early childhood education, but here she just gives us the basics from a has of experts.

The best part about this book is how the concepts go from the simple to the complex. It starts off with quantitative (mean, mode, standard deviation, chi square, correlation, regression, etc.) and moves to the qualitative (surveying, interviewing, observationa/participatory research, ethnography, naturalistic design).

Its an excellent starting point for EC pros looking to better understand scholarly journals. It stops just short of multilevel modeling. I suggest you get a good qualitiatve textbook and quantitative textbook to go along with it.

Very Nice!

Bright new perspectives on Winnicott and Bowlby
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-07
I so much enjoyed reading this book! These are personal memories of Winnicott and Bowlby, two of the most important British contributors to psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in the 20th century. More than half is written by Judith Issroff, a contemporary who worked closely together with them for many years. Further chapters are added by two more experts. It is written in a lively style, completely brings to life Winnicott and Bowlby, comparing them, contrasting them, doing full justice to both, and supplying many hitherto unknown details of their lives, usually in the form of anecdotes, some funny, some deep and full of wisdom. The book would be useful and enjoyable to read for psychotherapy students as well as practitioners, and is a must for any researchers or future biographers. It contains a vast bibliography of the mushrooming recent literature about Winnicott and Bowlby.

An excellent look at Bomber Command
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-17
The author gives an interesting look at navigating a bomber
at night during World War 2, but what sets this book apart
is the author's analysis of bombing during the War.
While I disagree with his theory that the War could have been
ended in 1943 (I doubt Hitler thought he was defeated)
his views on the morality of area bombing make for a very
interesting read.
