Absolutely fantastic book that logically and systematically rips the foundation out from under the Arminianistic position. This is single most important book I have ever read on this topic. It answers most of the objections to Calvinism head on in a scholarly and highly readable fashion (assuming you at least got through a college education). Just check out who these authors are! The finest minds in the reformed field today! Piper and Ware are particularly convincing in their respective chapters. As I noted in the heading, you can still get most of the contents of this book as "Still Sovereign" in paperback -- it was recently reissued under that title. So read it, digest it, then rip apart the Arminianists!!! Have fun...

To many people today, Calvinism is an anachronism. How can 20th century people take a teaching seriously which proclaims that God is good, and yet completely in control of the world? Could a good God really be all-powerful, and yet allow (or even ordain) some of the atrocities that have been perpetrated in our own century?

The 10 contributors show that a proper understanding of the Bible involves believing that God is indeed sovereign, yet also loving, just and good.

John Piper's helpful chapter asks the question "Are there 2 wills in God?" And then seeks to show that God does indeed "fulfil all his will" and yet "is not willing that any should perish."

S.M. Baugh discusses the meaning of "foreknowledge" in the Bible, and argues persuasively that God's foreknowledge must mean a lot more than knowing what is going to happen in the future.

Jerry Bridges shows that a belief in the sovereignty of God has practical implications for everyday living, while Samuel Storms explains how it is worth praying to a God who has already decreed "the end from the beginning." In fact, he argues that there is not much point in praying to a God who is not in complete control of his world.

This book has been one of the most helpful explanations of Calvinism which I have read. Highly recommended.

This is a really great book. I was going to write a long review, but when I read the editorial reviews above, I found they described the contents of the book almost exactly as I had intended to do, so I will not repeat those descriptions here. I will note that the book does require a working knowledge of World War I; it is not for the beginner. And it is not, nor intended to be, a complete history of the war. But, for example, the two chapters on the Somme give the best short overview of the entire battle I have read in 35 years of studying WWI. In every essay in the book I gained some new insights. I will also point out that the book does not have to be read in order; I jumped back and forth often in my reading. I'd give this book six stars if I could.

Excellent collection of writers and topics

I found this book both compelling and readable. Each of the essays were written by talented and skilled writers and the topics range from Jutland, a Turkish viewpoint of Gallipoli, origins of the flamethrower, the Paris Gun and it's myths, the origin of the term 'No Man's Land', the brutal battles at Ypre, the Somme, noted pilots and their daring adventures, some great insight into 'Black Jack' Pershing and his dealings with the Allied generals and his lady friends.
These were edited from previously published MHQ magazine issues and should find a place on the book shelf of any WWI buff. Enjoy.

This book is a worth 5 stars! A retrospective of this acclaimed photographer's work with celebrities. Stunning portraits and beautiful nudes of Keanu Reeves, Stephen Dorf, Tony Ward, Rupert Everett, and Speedy. This book is very difficult to find.. but worth the effort. It was originally published in Milan to coincide with a show Gorman held in Verona, Italy in 1999. Outstanding title.

Fascinating Insights into the Process of Harold Prince
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-27
This is not a biography. It is, rather, a detailed exploration of Harold Prince's process, his methods, from his beginnings in the 1950s with 'The Pajama Game,' on through his string of musicals with Stephen Sondheim. the two revivals of Bernstein's 'Candide,' his work with Andrew Lloyd Webber and, in this newly expanded version of a book originally published in 1989, the latest work by Prince, another Sondheim musical, 'Bounce,' the story of the Mizner brothers who were responsible for the real estate boom in Florida.

What makes this such an interesting read is that Prince is amazingly candid about his work, and this includes telling us what he believes went wrong with various of his less-successful ventures, and how even the successes might have been made better. We get inside his mind and come to admire his utter honesty and his immense creativity. Author Foster Hirsch, a professor who is an expert on American musical theater, writes in a neatly crafted style which makes the book un-put-downable.

This is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the Broadway musical, particularly of the last fifty years.

Fans of producer/director Harold Price, who was a giant in musical theatre circles, will relish an expanded edition of the classic coverage which even includes an updated foreword by Prince himself. Prince's works are wide-ranging, from his direction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita" to his productions of "Fiddler on the Roof" and "West Side Story". Various chapters cover Prince's more recent work as well, adding insights and numerous rare photos which make Harold Pricne And The American Musical Theatre a 'must' for discriminating audiences.

This is a real science book (so it takes some brains to read), so it is not for everyone. But, I thought it was cool because the content was diverse, balanced, and not hyped. It is pricey, but it is priced like textbooks. The best source there is!

Finally, an academic and mulitfaceted examination of ghosts!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-05
This book is the only one of its kind, from my experience. It is an actual textbook devoted to the examination of ghosts, haunts, and poltergeists from a myriad of academic perspectives like history, anthropology, media studies, comparative literature, sociology, psychology, physiology, and parapsychology. Each discipline has its own chapter, and the chapters are arranged into three sections: Sociocultural Perspectives, Physical and Physiological Perspectives, and Psychological Perspectives. Unlike most books on ghosts, this one cuts through the spin and sensationalism to bring the reader authoritative information on what academia knows about these phenomena. Also, the book's chapters are written by the top researchers in the field. This book will set the standard for a long time to come. It is highly recommended reading for serious students and anyone interested in the science behind what appears to be "seance fiction."

Helping interdisciplinary teams develop and prosper
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-03
This book is one of few texts, appropriate for a wide audience, which clearly explains why interdisciplinary practice is a necessity for most health conditions. It is grounded in complexity theory and has a strong epidemiological and whole population focus which is challenging to most health professionals. I would strongly recommend this book to any reader who, like me, is responsible for or involved with an interdisciplinary clinic with a research and teaching commitment which
deals with a complex (paediatric) condition such as dysphagia (swallowing problems).

A new approach for problem solving
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-27
We live in a world of complex systems and trying to understand them has been an ongoing enterprise. Traditionally these systems have been broken down into component parts in order to analyse individual pieces of the puzzle. Unfortunately, 'the whole is more then the sum of its parts'. This book explains and provides examples of using complexity thoery and transdisciplinary thinking to arrive at more long term and long lasting solutions to complex problems in human health. For those interested in this new approach, this book provides an excellent introduction to the approaches themselves as well as numerous examples of how they can be of practical use. The final section describes in detail how to use this approach to design studies and analyse data.

A crucial expose of ideas for the challenges

Review Date: 2004-06-13
Edited by Erick Sawatzky, who has served as pastor of congregations in Canada and the U.S., as prison chaplain, and on the board of the Canadian Association for Pastoral Education, The Heart Of The Matter: Pastoral Ministry In Anabaptist Perspective is a collection of essays by ministers and theologians discussing the questions of what pastoral ministry truly looks like in the modern day, the influence of a history of "dissident discipleship", and much more. Writings include "The Pastor As Prophet", "Mennonite Ministry And Christian History", "The Pastor As Spiritual Orienteer", "Pastoral Ministry As An Improvisational Art", and much more. A thought-provoking exposition concerning how a pastor can best serve his flock and share the word of God, The Heart Of The Matter is a crucial expose of ideas for the challenges of the modern day. Highly recommended especially for Anabaptist ministers and churchgoers alike.

Clear Perspective

Review Date: 2004-06-01
Dr. Sawatzky's book on pastoral ministry is a clear statement of the perspective of pastoral ministry from his particular Anabaptist tradition. His defining the role of pastor as " at the heart of the matter is the task of incarnating Christ in a sinful world--a task never forgotten, yet never fully realized by the church." p 3 is a wonderful center and reminder for all pastors of their role. In a particularly cynical world clearly defining the pastoral role and living into it could go a long way to healing so much of the pain in the world. One image is the pastor as Spiritual Orienteer ..read on in this text you will be happy you did.
I highly recommend this text for it's clarity, evocativeness, and insightful perspective.

A beautiful book on a genius of Dutch painting
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-02
As far as I know, this is the only publication in English available on Saenredam, one of the great geniuses of Dutch art. It is very well documented (especially on the provenance history of each work), beautifully illustrated (the illustrations include his very rare drawings) and a must-have for anyone interested in Dutch painting of the Golden Age. Saenredam does not just paint churches; he captures the light, the air and the soul of XVII century Holland.

Brilliant, Magnificent , and Serene
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-01
I first ran into the paintings of Saenredam on a visit to the Netherlands five years ago, and was fascinated by his work. The brilliant use of perspective and the draughtsman-like quality of his work really appealed to me. In it's painstaking quality, it reminded me somewhat of Northern Rennaisance painters. Yet the subject of these works was quite different. Saeredam's church interiors and exteriors have a serenity to them quite different from anything else.

I was very disappointed upon my return to the states because I could find little if anything about this great painter. If you've done a search here, you've seen that the only other books on Saenredam are out of print and hideously expensive.

I was overjoyed when I heard the Getty was bringing in the first major show of Saenredam's works in 40 years. I ordered this catalogue as soon as it was available. I was not disappointed.

This book features excellent reproductions of preparatory drawings and finished works, along with commentary that is interesting to the both the lay audience and those with more expertise. I heartily recommend it.
