This is a very through review of the Bayon temple in Siem Reap, Cambodia, having been there myself, this book is very detailed in it's coverage of the Bayon in almost all of it's aspects, making me want to return to Cambodia to see all that I've missed...

Roland Nolen helped me to adopt a new perspective

Roland D. Nolen is urging people in Corporate America to adopt a new perspective on success. "Most people work hard, if you think about it," Nolen says, "When it comes down to it, you have to differentiate yourself. The people with interpersonal skills, communication skills, and team player attitudes are the ones getting ahead." He claims that it is imperative for workers to see their weaknesses and strengths through the eyes of others. Communication is also crucial, claims Nolen. Most employees work very hard and produce good results; however, if they can't communicate their progress to others successfully, these people may never enjoy positive recognition. This has become increasingly more important as technical skills have gained value over interpersonal skills. With such intense emphasis on technology, employees rarely appreciate the significance of communication and perspective. Because of Roland D. Nolen, my career is finally going places!
This books is really worth it ! Great Job !

Roland Nolen describes in simple terms and different situations how company dynamics really work. This book has beeninstrumental in helping me understand my manager more and hence helped me be more successful in my career ! Since I work in the Technology industry like Mr. Nolen, I totally understand the situations presented and the problems encountered in the day to day routines. I agree with so many things in this book (so uncanny !)He also gives you ways on how to improve your style, image and even productivity with very useful checklists at the end of the book

David McIlroy has written an intelligent and practical analysis of a biblical view of law and justice, and how it applies to the individual, the state, and the church. The capstone for his arguments is chapter 1, "The Character of God", for McIlroy deftly describes who God is and the qualities that define Him. McIlroy is able to justify his arguments for 'law and justice' throughout the rest of the text on the basis of who God is and the teachings/commandments that He gives us in the Bible. Writing chapters in a historically chronological fashion (the fall of man, the Mosaic law, the introduction of a Hebrew King, etc.) McIlroy relates how the law applied to God's people in any point in time up to the present day. The author avoids the trap of presenting the law in a dry, reading format by providing historical context, other scholars' interpretations, and relative examples. From an American point of view the book is especially useful, because as the United States is polarized (religious right vs. secular left; the rights of the individual vs. the rights of the group) over the size and the role that government and laws should play in the individual's life, McIlroy looks at such questions and uses scripture to provide answers. The reader, therefore, will find the book to be an informative, eye-opening read.

Description
The Bible is not written as a handbook for lawyers, politicians and civil servants setting out a theology of human law. Its concern is the dealings of God with human beings and of human beings with God. What then does the Bible have to say about human laws and legal systems? Looking back to the Old Testament, to the Mosaic Law, the biblical model of kingship and the prophetic call to justice, barrister David McIlroy presents a Christian perspective on the biblical view of law and justice. He also examines the claims and teachings of Christ as King, specifically contrasting these with Caesar, a king of the world. The book then concludes with a reflection on the place of human laws in the light of the Last Judgment. A Biblical View of Law and Justice seeks to wrestle with the biblical message of justice, giving Christian lawyers, civil servants, and politicians a renewed vision and understanding of the potential of their work in the post-Christendom world.
· A book written for lawyers by a practicing lawyer.
· Provides a clear biblical basis for an understanding of the place of human law within God's purposes for the world.
· An exploration of the biblical approach to law and justice from Genesis to Revelation.
About the Author
David McIlroy is a practicing attorney in London where he specializes in banking law, insolvency law, and employment law. He is also Visiting Lecturer in Law at the University of London.

This was very well written and had an abundant series of examples to support the authors' main point--with references to government documents, tables, graphs. Oliver and Shapiro can be extremely repetitive in restating their thesis, but, overall, the book was very eye-opening and perhaps a little depressing.
You'd make it a point not invest the majority of your wealth in the home and car after reading this book.

A Sound Attack on the Middle-Class Myth

Review Date: 2000-05-28
The arguement that the past thirty years have resulted in a closing of the gap between whites and blacks seems untenable after reading this book. Using wealth instead of income as a measure of success and progress, Oliver and Shapiro argue that glaring inequalities still exist and may actually be growing. Moreover, since creating wealth is far more difficult when one has none to begin, the authors argue that such inequalities are sure to continue unless significant changes are made to the social safety net. These premises certainly call into question the notion of a vibrant black middle class.
Overall, I found the book to be scholarly, yet accessible to those who don't hold a Ph.D. in research methodology. The information was nicely balanced; the interviews complemented the extensive survey data and everything was clearly presented. My only complaint is that the statistical information was not presented in the appendix with the tables. This would have been useful and meaningful to academics reading the book. That being said, the thesis is a profound one, and for all those with an interest in social equity and social policy this is a must-read.

I use this book everyday in my clinic. My patients love getting to know the truth of why their diagnosis is a mystery. The patients are fascinated that when one uses optimal ranges alot more dis-ease is exposed.
I have recommended this book to so many other physicians. Dicken and Scott did a great job with this book. It's a masterpiece.

Functional analysis of blood tests goes far beyond looking at reference ranges (which are commonly mistaken for optimal ranges.) However aspects of blood chemistry which are normal, compared with abnormalities in other aspects may lead to an understanding of impaired immunological or endocrine function. Weatherby clearly describes how to analyze blood chemistry and CBC tests in this book. If you deal with blood test analysis, read this book.

How to grow shareholder value

This book does a nice job describing how to grow shareholder wealth. It is written by two authors with great experience. Bill Hass, a former consulting partner with Ernst & Young's bankruptcy practice, has seen all the things that a company can do wrong, and has described how to reverse them for gain. Shep Pryor is distinguished with his investment experiences. I particularly liked how they describe the importance of understanding a key principle to know which types of customers to retain, grow, and acquire, which types to not chase. As important, they describe how determining much you spend on the right types of customers on differentiated services, deals and offers is how to optimize shareholder wealth creation.

BOARD PERSPECTIVES: Building Value Through Strategy, Risk Assessment, and Renewal makes two important contributions to the vast field of business information:
1) it can help board members and corporate leaders make the best use of their time in safeguarding and building corporate value, and
2) it can teach journalists, equity analysts, public policymakers, and others outside the realm of operating businesses how companies actually operate to deliver value to their owners and others.
PERSPECTIVES hits the mark in explaining exactly how boards can contribute value - no suprise, since the author is an active member of the National Association of Corporate Directors, a membership organization that has spent three decades discovering, refining, and communicating that point. (Full disclosure: this reviewer works for NACD!)
This is NOT a rant between two covers, meant to be read on a single flight or train ride. Rather, it's a real BOOK - a serious reference work for the people on the line for corporate accountability, and for those in a position to judge them.
The publisher, Commerce Clearing House, founded in 1913, has earned a general reputation for reliable technical information. This book lives up to that legacy.

[1] The original papers are attached. Do you remember Abel said, Read the masters', not their pupils'?
[2] For each important paper, there is an introduction written by the real experts of this domain.
[3] This is a real awesome book that leads you to overview the history of statistics.
[4] You can find a surprise of good price somewhere on campusi.com if you need all the three volumes.

Volume I of breakthroughs in statistics covered the foundations and the schools of inference that developed. Volume II did a good job of covering further developments in methodology and distribution theory. However after the two volume were published in 1992 it became apparent that there had been some key omissions and that further developments shed light on the importance of articles that had not been considered breakthrough papers earlier but in hindsight they clearly were. So in 1997 these fine editors published Volume III to fill in the gaps.
The earliest paper that was overlooked was Galton's famous 1889 paper that introduced regression, correlation and the phenomena of regression toward the mean. It is clear from reading the book that all the added papers were worthy of the title of breakthrough. Of particular interest to me are the articles that deal with faster computing techniques and computer intensive algorithms that were made practically important as the speed of computers grew astronomically in the 1990s. So the paper by Metropolis et al. 1953 became a breakthrough when another breakthrough paper by Geman and Geman 1984 showed the these Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms were useful in a Bayesian approach to image processing or "image restoration." After this breakthrough modifications of the basic algorithms have been developed to solve many of the previously viewed as infeasible problems in Bayesian inference. The practical development of frequency domain times series owes a debt to the fundamental breakthrough paper by Cooley and Tukey in 1965 that introduced the first versions of the fast Fourier transform. I shall skip the others except for two of my favorites, Peter Hall's 1988 paper that established theoretically through the use of Edgeworth and Cornish-Fisher expansions the asymptotic accuracy of various types of bootstrap confidence intervals and the 1986 paper by Liang and Zeger that developed an approach to longitudinal data analysis via generalized linear models. In this remarkable paper they also introduced Generalized Estimating Equations that are commonly used today. this work led to a famous and popular book on longitudinal data analysis that they coauthored with Peter Diggle. The pharmaceutical industry that I work in owes a great debt to Liang and Zeger as their approach to longitudinal (or repeated measures) data has been applied to the efficacy endpoints of phase III clinical trials.
