Is Adoption Bizarre?
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.

Lucy's Feet is one of the few books which goes beyond " adoption day." It captures the subtle attachment rituals which are created over time in an adopted family. I should know. I was adopted at age 5 months. I was surprised to hear anyone describe this book as " bizarre". Lucy's Feet is adorable and " real".

When sibling fights will stop

Review Date: 2002-03-18
Every family with more than one child experiences sibling rivalry.

It's not always the same, however, when one child was adopted and another was born into the family. Sure, you still have the usual "he said," "no, she said" fights, spats over ownership of toys and games--and who gets first dibs on the sofa to read their favorite book.

But this book addresses the special kind of rivalry that arises between a child who looks like her parents and one who is shorter, more plump and has different hair. The second will one day say, "You love her more, because she came from your tummy."

Parents don't, of course, love biological children more than their adopted children. But kids need to hear that--over and over and over again.

This book helps get the message across. Lots of things happen in the story, and I won't give them away.

But this nugget is what your adopted child wants to hear: "I carried you around in my heart for a very long time," Lucy's mom assures her. "And while I waited, I thought...about how it would be when I held you close,...the songs we would sing and the places we would go. Then my heart would start beating very fast, and I would think, 'Now that's my baby kicking...away at my heart'."

When both children understand, that's when the fighting will stop. Alyssa A. Lappen

This is a great book! The pictures and words tell an appealing story that has many levels of meaning, metaphor. My 9 1/2 year old, who is hesitant verbally, and especially so regarding her personal issues, just loved this book. The cover and title caught her eye and she curled up with it right when she handled the slim volume. And she never said a thing about having read it for several days. And, then, a propos of nothing--just like a 9 yr old!-- she initiated a long "deep" very expressive dialog which Lucy's Feet clearly had stirred in her. The meaning of a "real" family. How adopted children are matched to their real families (the ones that they know, not their genetic link). She loved looking at Lucy and noting similarities with herself. She loved Lucy's family and how it is similar (and dissimilar) to her own. If you like this age group, you'll love this book because they will love it

Racism + Capitalism = Public Housing in Chicago
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-28
Excellent review of how the Chicago Housing Authority, despite good intentions, ended up not only itself segregated, but reinforced existing housing segregation in the private market.

Hirsch actually takes a much broader view of his subject than public housing. Rather, he exp;ores the various ways public policy was manipulated (generally by commercial interests) to serve their own ends, and how those profit driven manipulations resulted in Chicago being one of America's most segregated cities. Ironically, the dramatic expansion of the Black Ghetto chronicalled by Hirsch occurred at the same time that the country was under seige by the forces of McCarthism...yet in Chicago, the commercial interests (lead by Marshall Field) had no compunction about seizing private property to serve their own ends.

Anyone who believes that neighborhoods are segregated because of private choices must read this book and learn the truth.

the deception of public housing

After reading The Hidden War,(which made extensive reference to Hirsch's book)I wanted a more detailed history about the creation of public housing as we know it to be in Chicago. This book gives detail of how the political, educational, civic organizations wanted to contain the burgeoning African American community which was growing during post world war II and the great migration years. The powerful in Chicago used government policies to maintain housing segregation...the powerless resorted to violence to keep African Americans out of neighborhoods...the results were the massive and bleak housing structures which are called public housing. This book not only talks about the historical wheelings and dealings of the white power structure, but it also gives insight into how the same tactics are being used today, to maintain certain class and racial segregation. This is a good companion must read along with The Hidden WARS.

Review Date: 2008-02-20
Ray Carroll and David Ruppert are well known research statisticians who have published many joint articles on regression, weighted regression and transformation and they have also written an excellent book together on this research topic. Stefanski has recently published several papers on measurement error models with Carroll. Here they have teamed up to write a statistics text on a unique topic. Measurement error models are common and practical when dealing with covariates that have measurement error. Least squares estimation in linear regression is based on the assumption that the predictor variables are measured without error. There are many articles and an excellent text by Fuller "Measurement Error Models", published by Wiley in 1988 that deals with the linear case. Also look at a section in Chapter 5 of Miller's "Beyond ANOVA, Basics of Applied Statistics" that refers to the problem as the error in variables problem. For the nonlinear case this is the first treatment. Well written and well documented, this text provides an up-to-date account of the theory and methods and provides real applications (e.g. the Framingham Heart Study). This is a great reference as are many of the other monographs in this series by Chapman and Hall/CRC Press. Includes bootstrap approaches in the chapter on fitting methods and models.

Amazing and well told story of Yeshua's Life Details
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-06
I am so very glad that Sylvia's publisher encouraged her to write this book, because most of us Christians are fascinated by the life of Yeshua and those surrounding him, including Mother Mary, and especially Mary Magdelene, two individuals that we know very little about from the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke-Acts and John. Her book goes to great detail and length to explain the role of Mother God in the life of Yeshua, and how he came to die on the cross in an interesting and refreshing style. It also clearly explains the split in the church between the Jewish Christians, the Gnostic Christians and the Pauline Christians and the differences in philosophy in an interesting manner. I loved the book and could not put it down. I started it at 10 pm and had to finish it in the next four hours, which is possible because her writing style is interesting, exciting and clear--not difficult or scholarly.

In any case the one thing which she did not explain well, and I see it in many comments on reviews of her book on Amazon, is that people are concerned that Mother God is not mentioned in the bible, but this is not entirely accurate. She is, because the most popular name for God in the bible is "Elohim", mentioned some 2500 times, and it is derived from "Eloah" meaning Goddess with a masculine ending. The article used before it is gendered fe/male plural, with Hebrew being a gendered language, unlike English. Another word for god is "El Shaddai" which means the "mighty breasted one" and is gendered female. She forgot to mention this, so I thought this might help everyone better understand where the Mother God in her book comes from, or at least according to the bible. The unfortunate thing about this language interpretation, is only few biblical and intellectual scholar are aware of this, with the bulk of translations of the bible having been done by promoters of a patriarchal religion, which Sylvia does mention quite frequently in her book, but perhaps not always as completely as she should.

In any case, the details of the life of Yeshua and the holy women are amazing and it explains the strong existence of the Cathars in France for many decades in early Christianity.

Sylvia has once again, done a wonderful and credible job in promoting a loving, caring and nurturing Mother and Father God in this book who assisted and supported a Messiah throughout a long and notable life.

The book expands upon other books such as the Tomb of God and the Da Vinci code, which it is not incompatible with. These are also books I would highly recommend on this subject with the exception that the Tomb of God is much more scholarly and drier than reading Sylvia Browne. Another good series that is similar to the content of this book are the Essene Gospels of Jesus by Dr. Szekeley and Edgar Cayce's book on Jesus, which again, reaffirm the statements made by Slyvia in this book.

She also states in her book that much more archeological evidence will be uncovered in the next few years that will more clearly establish the fact that Yeshua survived the crucifixion, lived to have children, and Mary Magdelene was in fact instrumental in spreading his work and gospels.

I highly recommend the book if you are at all interested in the details of the life of Yeshua and those of the holy women who stayed with him and supported him throughout his mission work here on earth.

A Must-Read for Scholar-Activists
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-28
For scholar-activists concerned with systemic connections between animal, environmental and human oppression, Nature Ethics provides a lens through which to examine other philosophies, theologies and political and environmental theories. Exploring the connection that Kheel makes between human violence and socially constructed masculine identity is like donning a pair of 3-D glasses that exposes previously unseen dualisms in even the most esteemed perspectives on animal rights, Gandhian nonviolence, environmental protection and ecological holism.

The ecofeminist invitation to develop empathethic relationships with individual beings validates the experiences with animal suffering that move many toward activism in the first place. Kheel's refusal to rely solely on the "conceptual force" of rational arguments make her final call to a conscious ethos of contexualized care toward nature and individual other-than-human animals hard to resist. If you have ever been frustrated by rational or spiritual systems that don't seem to wed theory with praxis, Nature Ethics may illuminate why.

Factoring care into ethical decision-making, bridging gaps between movements
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-21
In this book, Marti Kheel calls into question the dominant utilitarian ethic in nature philosophy which regards the individual as expendable for the sake of the species. Ultimately, she validates the importance of subjective experience and emotion for ethical decision-making, challenging the masculinist orientations of previous nature philosophers.

This book is an important contribution to the work of bridging movements such as environmentalism, feminism, and animal rights, while raising questions and paving the way to implementing policy and measures to do so.

This is an essential read for anyone interested in the above topics.

The earth does not belong to us, We belong to the Earth.

Review Date: 2008-05-22
In her recent book, "Nature Ethics," philosopher Marti Kheel activates my sympathy with "other than human" individuals. Like Chief Seattle spoke, animals are our sisters and brothers. Kheel examines the holist nature philosophers prevalent in the field of environmental ethics. After explaining their contributions, she critiques their platforms including hyper-masculinity, ecosystems, ethics, and Deep Ecology. She consistently uncovers a focus on the abstract or universal "whole" embodied in generic concepts like "species" and "ecosystems," rather than a concern for particular individuals like the deer fleeing the hunter's bullet, or a doomed cow interred in a slaughterhouse. After defining the characteristic thought in the literature, Kheel disseminates the dominant zeitgesit of ecofeminism. I wrote a paper on ecofemnism and Kheel's book covers the field. She explains the "ethics of care" and applies it to care for particular others within nature, such as the domesticated animals raised for food and research. She describes "allopathic ethics." For instance, modern medicine meets a health challenge with battle, to radiate and poison the cancer tumor. ALternative medicine restores the strength of the person by reducing what makes them sick in the first place therefore restoring innate balance. To understand why humans devalue nature, Kheel researches the psycho-social underpinnings of gender development. The book ends with the stories of "other-than human" individuals such as the pig profiled in the movie "Babe" or the actual story of "Emily the cow" who in 1994 escaped a slaughterhouse in Boston. Kheel validates emotions and motivates people to refrain from killing by adopting a vegan lifestyle in response to animal suffering. As a lacto-ovo vegetarian, I admire Kheel's commitment and her invitation to join an ethics of care for particular individuals as exemplified in her vegan ecofeminist philosophy. I highly recommend this book as a great review of ecofeminism and ecological philosophy. Kheel has been writing about this subject in journals and books for many years and is widely cited in the literature.

One would think that the field of philosophy that is concerned with the nature of truth would be an area that has been thoroughly worked over for many years. In fact, unlike ontology and epistemology and other fields, it does not even have a proper name. It has however, in recent years been a fertile one in the Analytic tradition. Lynch's reader provides the seminal articles along with important classics in the broader discipline that are a must for any one wanting to reflect upon this critical subject. Also included are helpful introductory essays and diagrams.
