Chasing Ghosts is a gripping, on-the-ground, cold bucket of water in the face view of the Iraq war. It tracks Rieckhoff's path from Manhattan on 9/11 to patrolling the streets of Baghdad to re-adjusting to life at home. His writing is lucid and sophisticated, raw and unbridled. Its a story of true patriotism, the active defense of American ideals through military sacrifice followed by the courage to challenge the mis-management - from flawed foreign policy to equipment shortages to inciting, empty rhetoric by the administration - of that sacrifice, which he experienced firsthand. He captures the sacrifice and heroism of not just his brothers in arms, but also the Iraqis helping the American effort or merely trying to survive the maelstrom. This is a great read.

Paul Rieckhoff is a very dedicated individual. He tells it like he sees it and he continues to help the badly treated American vets through IAVA. He graduated from Amherst, one of the top schools in America, and left a high paying Wall Street career to serve America. He doesn't "sell out" in his honest account of being in Iraq so of course he gets criticized for truthfully telling what he saw. It certainly isn't what we want to learn when we find out how fowled up and mishandled things are over there. I like the book and recommend it.

A fascinating and thought provoking account of an army officer's life at the "Sharp End" in Iraq.

Ever since the invasion of Iraq I've read everything about the occupation that I could get my hands on. Few of the books have been top drawer, and accounts by military vets have often been uniquely unsatisfying.
But this book is superb: snappy, compelling, evocative, informative. And best of all, extraordinarily well written.
It's a shame that this fine book should have fallen out of print.

To begin to understand The War In Iraq, I wanted to read a primary source - someone whose boots were on the ground outside of The Green Zone; someone who dealt with The Iraqi people daily - as civilians, as allies, and as the enemy. In an engaging and direct narrative, Paul Rieckhoff presents his experience as infantry officer. The intricacies of his duties go beyond combat to functions of a non-military nature. The challenges Paul encountered in Iraq because of the destroyed infrastructure often redefined the role of his command.

The book drew me in and held me to the last page. Rieckhoff's attention to detail frames the narrative - e.g. his journal entry on the flight to Iraq; his manner of acquiring & customizing transportation for his platoon; the descriptions of combat and interaction with other units as the infantry does the real work; his homecoming - including a drive with girlfriend that shows the story often untold about heroes returning from combat.

Don't listen to the talking heads on TV. Read the account of someone who was there in service to our nation. Highly recommended.

This is very prcatical and helpful book to learn about not only divorce, but also marriage, including reasonable reason to marry, types of things to consider before marriage, marriage plan, relationships...on and on.
It is not like listing of theories and statistics, but very practical to learn something out of it. In addition, contents are very organized well, and easy to read. This is one of the book i would keep, and recommend to friends who are in relationship.

This book was a wonderful presentation of the functioning, or rather, disfunctioning of a marriage and how factors can lead up to a divorce. The book walks you through the reasons and factors that push individuals to divorce, also it describes the aftermath of the event and what happens to everyone involved.

This book does an amazing job going through the entire process of divorce from start to finish. The book begins with the history of divorce and ends with the future of divorce. I can honestly say that I have learned so much just by reading this book. Clarke-Stewart and Brentano cover every aspect of divorce in a way that is easy to read and easy to understand. Their knowledge concerning risk factors and effects of divorce is very insightful. The authors do not give brief statements on the many topics of divorce, rather, they go in depth and include many different studies to support their conclusions. After reading this book, it really opened my eyes to what millions of adults and children have to endure because of divorce. It has also made me reevaluate what I want in a marriage and in my future partner. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I recommend this book to anyone who has ever though about getting married at any point in their life. Although there is a plethora of information, the book itself is an easy read. Clarke-Stewart and Brentano present the topics in an organized and readily understood manner. This book provides useful knowledge pertaining to the causes and consequences of divorce. Even more helpful, are the suggestions provided for prevention and coping. As a college student, I would easily ignore this book on the shelves at a bookstore since I have no plans on getting married soon, let alone divorce. But, this book helps you question certain aspects in your life when dealing with relationships and learning more about yourself. Overall, this book provides great insight on the topic of divorce and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Prior to reading the literature found in this text I was unaware of so many risk factors and characteristics commonly associated with "at-risk" marital companions. Not to say that the book steers readers away from the idea of marriage, rather it highlights facts that everyone in a serious relationship should take into account upon entering a lifelong commitment. I feel that I have personally benefited from the material in this book and believe that anyone in a relationship or in a marriage needs to purchase this book. Understanding the evolutionary process of divorce, statistical facts regarding the subject and ways to avoid the dissolution of a marriage are key facts that can alter one's life and I feel that I am at an advantege after having read this text.

I first read "The Lesson of the Chopsticks" and must say that I was not disappointed reading "How to Keep Life's Small Problems from Becoming Big Ones"! Ms.Greenlee's unique view of life's everyday challenges is one we all can identify with on some level.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is in need of a boost to handle procrastination and prioritizing. Ms. Greenlee's uncovers a profound truth using vivid illustrations and metaphors to convey her point and shift us out of our "comfort zone". And, it's a LOT CHEAPER THAN THERAPY!

Finally, a most enjoyable and interesting book filled with practical and useful guidance that can be helpful for every age and every level. Each lesson is deeply meaningful, yet stated so simply. A true Gem!!!

Who knew that paying attention to inanimate objects could be so powerful? In "Paperclips", Ms. Greenlee has humorously and quite consciously given us a roadmap to sorting through the habits we all develop when faced with discomfort. Reading it again and again gives the reader a fresh way of envisioning life's way of offering opportunities to grow.

This charmingly simple book spoke volumes to me about the dangers of a disorganized life, and brought to mind several practical applications. If I don't hang up my clothes every night, my bedroom is soon an unworkable mess. If I don't take care of my mail (and other paperwork) diligently and often, it soon becomes overwhelming, and I can't find that piece of paper I really need. If I don't spot-clean the kitchen and baths (almost) every day, things get disgusting quite quickly, and germs can grow. And the list could go on. It's so refreshing to see a simple, highly useful truth presented in such an engaging way, and I look forward to the next "lesson." Way to go, Gina!

A quick read that leaves you feeling refreshed and confident to face the challenges ahead. This is not a book you'll read just once but one you'll reference again and again.

This book was given to me by a colleague and has changed the way I think about organiational dynamics. Dave Riveness did a great job with 'The Secret Life of the Corporate Jester'. I read it cover-to-cover on a flight and couldn't put it down. The combination of Greek mythology and lessons for organizational change was a very interesting idea, and Dave's writing was crisp, clear and accessible. All in all, this is a great read on how to transform an organizational culture from the inside-out.

I highly recommend The Secret Life of the Corporate Jester - both entertaining and insightful! This book empowers readers to influence positive change in their organization -- regardless of organization or position. The Apprentice Guide stories provide insight and guidance to uncover personal and organizational blind spots. A great read to increase individual and organizational effectiveness.

This definitely is a timely book with very valuable and insightful information given the current very tragic situation in the island shared by the two republics. Cambeira's intelligent focus and keen interpretation of the island's development in every sense helped me better understand especially the Dominican culture that most of us know so little about. I am sure many readers who are curious about Caribbean cultures will find this work extremely informative.
I also recommend this writer's new novel Azucar! The Story of Sugar.

This particular book by Professor Cambeira is truly a jewel in terms of its historical and cultural content and its unique treatment. Unlike any other book of this kind that I have read for its clarity in presentation. This is not your ordinary history textbook, but rather a highly personalized and lucid and informed interpretation of a community's evolution. I like how the Professor, who is Dominican, convinces the reader of his honesty. He says what many other Dominican writers don't say about our country, especially concerning certain questions of identity and the notion of inclusion in the formation of what we call dominicanidad. I also like the way Cambeira's writing style flows so gracefully. His nonfiction style is like his lyrical fiction that I found in his novels Azucar! The Story of Sugar and the sequel Azucar's Sweet Hope...Her Story Continues.

Cambeira is a wonderful writer in every sense.

Quisqueya La Bella Is A Must Read Book!

I am very impressed by this unusual perspective on Dominican history and culture by the Dominican writer Alan Cambeira. Cambeira's work is not your conventional history text. It reads more like an interest sustaining novel; It also presents some cultural aspects most writers on the subject usually omit or avoid altogether. I also found a surprising side issue: the theatrical version of Mario Vargas Llosa's La Fiesta Del Chivo (The Festival of the Goat) is in production by the well respected Repertorio Espanol and has an accompanying Study Guide done by Iliana Fuentes. I see that Ms Fuentes also lists Cambeira's book as a part of the suggested reading in this regard. To me, then, Cambeira has a winner. His book is definitely worth the read. ...

Everybody called Quisqueya the "Athens of the New World".
It is a country with beautiful beaches and beautiful people and a complex history. The island's ethnic mix of indigenuous, European (mainly Spanish) and African cultures and their merger across time resulted in the distinctive Dominican culture that we know today. Cambeira's passion for his native island is evident on every page. This book gave me a really different and fresh perspective from other books on the subject by other authors that I have read. This is an excellent personal interpretation that I'm recommending to anyone interested in learning about the Atena del Nuevo Mundo.Thanks to the Author. My next reading will certainly be his novel that everybody is talking about: Azucar! The Story of Sugar.

I didn't expect to like this book, but when I put it down I found myself eager to buy the next volume. It is, essentially, a gay romance set in the pirate era. The characters are intriguing, the historical details are fascinating, and the talk of philosophy and religion is quite interesting as well.

The reason this gets four stars from me instead of five is because the whole plot is dependent on a premise that is frankly ridiculous. The premise is that all (or nearly all) buccaneers are gay, and they all engage in long-term monogamous relationships equivalent to marriage with a very low divorce rate. This leads to extensive talk about sexual orientation throughout the book, which is really not necessary plot-wise and comes across more as the author trying to make a statement (considering most people who pick up this book would already agree, it is really unneccesary).

That said, if you can get past the premise, it's really a fun book and the characters are great.

I was very surprised at how much I fell in love with this book. It sounded remotely interesting since it contained a slash (M/M) romantic pirate story with some hints of angst. It's so much more than that. This book is fantastic. The angst and hurt/comfort were better than I ever could have dreamed. I won't spoil anyone, but these themes are much stronger than the book description suggests.

Beyond that, this book was written amazingly well. I have never read a book before that made me feel completely absorbed into the story. I wasn't reading to find out what happens next or to get to the good parts. The point of view allows you to feel like you're part of the story. The descriptions were so vivid, I felt like I was really there. When I stopped reading, I felt like I was transported back to a different world. The book is that engrossing.

Another thing I love about this book is that the secondary characters all have depth as well. You get to watch them grow as the story progresses. No character is truly minor, and they all end up important in some way. Details you thought in the beginning were just filler, end up important. It all comes together in the end.

Finally, I've noticed that most independent slash books have poor grammar and spelling, which you must overlook to read the story. This book has no such problem.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book to any fan of slash, historical fiction, hurt/comfort, or angst. It's the angst, hurt/comfort, and romance that make the story one of the best I've ever read, but even without all of that, this book has merit simply for the quality of its writing.

This is an excellent book. I enjoyed the history although some of it may not be accurate. It is predominately about two men coming to terms with their past lives and how it has affected their present ones. Both men grew throughout the book. The sex scenes were tastefully written. Will and Gaston fell in love with each other the fact that they were both men was secondary. I enjoyed the supporting characters - they were interesting and three dimensional. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the sequel.

I bought "Raised by Wolves" thinking it would be a rattling good read. It is, but it is marred by poor editing, historical inaccuracies and a peculiar use of English. The main character, Will Marsdale, writing in 1666, claims to have lived through the Reformation (which took place in the previous century); he is, of course, referring to Cromwell's Commonwealth. He searches London after the fire looking for the "block" in which the family home was situated. London had a medieval street pattern. "Blocks" were never a feature of English towns. He also speaks of going to "mass" at a time Catholicism was proscribed and Catholics persecuted.

The author's attempts at seventeenth century English result in clotted verbiage which at times is nonsensical; for example, "I didn't think he'd be so conducive" (to what?) and "I will endeavour to try" (try to try?) Pepys never wrote like this! There are also elementary spelling mistakes - "miniscule" and "supercede" for "minuscule" and "supersede".

In the afterword to the book Hoffman speaks of having studied the subject of pirates in depth, which is commendable. Unfortunately she is too anxious to share her research with us at length and devotes several passages to aspects of pirate life we would rather not know - the curing of pigs, the origin of words and other irrelevant details. Other aspects of seventeenth century life, for example the laws on primogeniture and entail, she ignores.

Despite these shortcomings the reader still wants to know what happens to her amoral characters. It is a pity that more pruning and checking wasn't done at the editing stage. Reading "Raised by Wolves" would have been far more enjoyable. It would have really rattled on then!

When my friend lent me "Brethren: Raised by Wolves", she told me three things: 1) It's about pirates, 2) gay pirates, to be more specific, and 3) it was really well written in comparison to the quality of other gay romances that are available for a lesser price (free) on a wider forum (online). W.A. Hoffman's novel met all these expectations and surpassed them in style, much like her protagonist, Will. This is a book that I would gladly shell out the asking price for, and will probably end up doing so.

The story is solid (though it should be noted that Hoffman's seafarers are not pirates, but buccaneers - a difference that is explored and explained and backed with much research on part of the author). Hoffman writes a compelling tale of love and belonging centered around two European nobles (one disinherited, the other reluctantly embraced by his father), who have abandoned their fortunes and filial responsibilities (or have been abandoned by these things). Will does this so that he can do as he wants without the restraint of title and privilege. Gaston wanders aimlessly from port to port, lost in himself. Both men meet one another in Port Royal (Jamaica) and instantly recognize within each other kinship and understanding. These feelings of brotherhood transform into love over the course of 541 pages as the plot takes them from English Caribbean society to the high seas amongst fellow buccaneers. At the same time, both men must learn to deal with one another's demons, alone and together.

The only real problems with this novel are the author's tendency to overstate and a few editorial issues. Facts and information about characters will be relayed numerous times, which lead to readers such as myself (who are mindful of information given throughout the text) becoming bored when something is mentioned for the third or fourth time. Granted this novel is some-500 pages in length and richly written with lots of detail, making it difficult for less mindful readers to follow information, so I can forgive and understand this rehashing. The editorial problems are something that you'll find in smaller publishing houses and are a result of not enough people going over the galley proofs or the people going over the proofs missing something here and there. All of the problems involve format, and while they're not disturbing enough to take a reader out of a story, it is something the publishing house should take into consideration when reprinting this book.

There is a third problem, of course: that this book ends. Even after finishing it an hour ago, I feel the need to return to this world that Hoffman has created. I'm hoping the second book will be just as compelling and will leave me feeling the same way (much to my despair and delight). This, I think, is the sign of a wonderful story and (despite the few problems) makes this novel worth the five star rating I gave it.

Professor Gottesfeld's textbook reminds us that the community is an important element in the mental health equation of us all. This is an important contribution to the mental health field.

This text book is one of the best written books in the world on the subject of abnormal psychology. The charm of the book is that it points out that what is "abnormal" changes as the culture changes. It helps you to understand what & why and what will be. This text is really loved by all my students at the university.

I have often wondered about what was abnormal, and how it was defined in capitalsim. Well, this professor, Dr. Gottesfeld, has a thing or two to say regarding the subject. Even my mother loved read the text and loved it. We both learned so much. We recommend this book to all those with an interest in abnormal psychology.

I have a copy of the first edition of this book and am still mesmerized by it. When it first came out, everyone I knew at design school who bought it felt like the information and techniques had given them an out-of-body-experience and it quickly became THE book to own, learn from, and emulate. Anyone who buys this book and applies the material and techniques will become better at drawing, rendering, and creative presentation methods...it is a sure-fire way to achieve "star power" in your office and in front of your clients!

great book! Out of the dozens of hand rendering guides I looked at, this was by far the best and the easiest to learn from. It tells you what pencils, markers, and tools to buy to achieve certain effects, and gives you step-by-step rendering instructions for tons of different types of materials and lighting situations. I highly recommend this- in fact, it should be mandatory for interior design students!

This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.

It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.

This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.

While reading "Our Uncle Sam" I cried, I laughed and I knew that the Sam Cooke that was in these pages was the real Sam Cooke. Even though the authur did not know his uncle he was able to bring out the real Sam. The book was beautifully written and you can see the love in every page. I am glad I bought "Our Uncle Sam" because it gave me the opportunity to know or feel like I know him. I always knew there was more to the story and now I know for sure. Thank you to the authur, Erik Greene, for writing this wonderfully uplifting and eye-opening book about the greatest song writer/singer/performer there ever was or ever will be.

I have read them all. Erik Greene's book is from the source and from the heart, by the people who knew Sam best: his family; not the people who just wanted a part of Sam or to control Sam.

Great read. Well done. If you love Sam Cooke's music you need to read this. If you're new to Sam's music--this will give you a deeper understanding of the man and his music.

This book exposed the contradictions of the autopsy report vs events that were publicized after Sam Cooke's death. Also intriguing sides of his personality were revealed; such as the trailblazer he was on the business side of the music industry and other popular entertainers he groomed.

Both these aspects of Cooke's life have been grossly
'under reported'...perspectives that are way overdue!

As I'm writing this review, I've got my favorite Sam Cooke tunes playing in the background. These are some of the most timeless pieces of music ever recorded. Every so often, I take them out, dust them off, and take a listen. My mood changes and somehow my day gets better.

There are plenty of biographies about Sam Cooke. His life makes an interesting story. Born into a large family, son of a minister, Sam started in gospel music and eventually became an R&B and pop superstar. Sam was also well known as a lady's man, a business man, and a human rights advocate. To this day, people still wonder about the real story behind his suspicious death.

Our Uncle Sam is unique among Sam Cooke biographies. This book is written by Sam's great nephew and includes stories from various relatives. I absolutely loved this concept. Family knows, and still loves you nonetheless, throughout both the good and bad. Therefore, I felt that this biography presented a really balanced story about Sam, where he came from, what drove him to succeed, and what was really important to him. Moreover, I was touched at this family's everlasting love and devotion to Sam's memory and to the loving foundations set out by Annie Mae and Charles Cook Sr.

The casual observer really believes that sensationally sexy singer known as Sam Cooke was killed doing the usual shady celebrity ho-down in a seedy hotel deep in a neighborhood that no sensible person would roam about after dark. Sam Cooke's musical brilliance has been almost completely buried in the scandal of his demise.

Erik Greene brought up many facts about Sam's murder that no one else has talked about. I've read Peter Guralnick that pitches Allen Klein as an angel and I've read David Ritz (w/ SR Crain and Cliff White) that pitches Klein as the devil in very flimsy disguise. Looking at Klein's track record with The Beatles, Rolling Stones and more recently (1997) The Verve, Klein is not to be trifled with or trusted. The spin in the "Legends" DVD on how he helped Sam develop Sam's second Copa show was comedy, even to someone on the outside looking in. It's easy to take credit for the success of a man who has been in the grave for 4 decades.

The details about 55 year old Bertha Franklin's composed neat appearance, immediately following her supposed tussle with 33 year old Sam that resulted in his demise is interesting. The dispappearance of all the police and morgue files and the sham of a interrogation directly following Sam's murder all point to people in high places wanting Mr. Cooke dead. After all, Sam was a black man who owned his own publishing and record companies in the 1960's. Not only that, he was encouraging other artists to do the same. Black people had been killed for much less in Sam's day, like sitting at a lunch countr and asking to be served. Sam posed a huge threat to the record company, much of which was and is controlled by the mob. Mr. Green brought all these factors to the forefront, including Sam's penchant for the finer things in life, from clothes to cars to homes and gadgets. If he was to indulge in dealing with call girls, I truly suspect that he would go to an expensive hotel where he was known and the staff would turn a blind eye. Lastly, a Ferrari idling in the ghetto, complete with keys and nobody steals it? Sam was set up, beat up and murdered.

Now Sam was far from a saint, but he did not deserve to be killed, most especially in such a horrific and humiliating manner. In 1964, only white people could pull off such a complete shut down of proper police and medical follow-up. What about Bob Keane owing the mob and having life insurance policies on some of his artists? Who owned the nightclub PJ's where Sam was last seen alive? What really happened to Bobby Fuller?

This book opens up a wound that has festered and remained a sore spot all these long years. Sam Cooke was an incredibly handsome, amazingly talented man; so much so that to watch tapes of him today still display what a sexy dynamic man he was. His appeal is not dated and he is still relevant with "A Change Is Gonna Come" and his many pop hits continue to play on radio stations that cater to the tastes of a wide spectrum of people.

The book reminds us that Sam, though flawed, loved and was loved by his family. He would be 76 today had he not been murdered. Sam's great nephew reminds us of Sam's great talent, forward thinking and charisma. But most importantly, it brings to the forefront the humanity of Sam Cooke, which makes his loss even sadder.

Don't even think about reading this withough kleenex. The reflections are thoughtout and heartwarming. Well worth the brief time it will take you to read.

We had listened to her interview on Family LIfe Radio and were really touched by that. So I was a bit disappointed to not have more of that feeling. The Bible study looked fine.

I WAS LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER FROM GOD OF WHY AND HOW. THIS BOOK GAVE ME A PATH AND WAYS TO COPE AND HEAL THROUGH BIBLE VERSE AND DISCUSSION OF JOB.

I found this book 4 years ago in Walmart, my Mom had just passed away, and my Father 2 yrs before her. Being a Christian it helped me see God's hand through the losses we had experienced.
Since that time I believe I have purchased almost 10 more books. Giving them to people in the pain of their loss, recently my husband had a student pass away at school, heart failure, at a very young age. Another to a young Mom whose baby passed away from an infection.
As inexpensive as these books are, purchase more than one, that is why I am at the website again..... another loss.... but God is there.

I have read and reread this book 5 times in the past 6 months. If you have lost a child and believe in God, this is a wonderful book.
