a fantastic book on bamboo engineering Review Date: 2007-07-28
The descriptions are good overall, sometimes excellent and very detailed, other times a little vague. This is not the be all and end all of bamboo books, but it is extremely good, and full of useful information.

the importance of being fancifulReview Date: 2000-10-13
these fairy tales have soft edges, and are obviously apologues. each one deals with complicated moral dilemmas -- but provides no solutions; the reader is often left feeling frustrated by the lack of clear moral direction that other fairy tales tend to have in abundance.
written more for adults than children, this book is a delightful way to spend an afternoon... if you don't mind having to think.

A dictionary of Mapuche available againReview Date: 2006-02-25
attempt to study and to compare Native American Languages
in all their wealth and linguistic/cultural heritage.
"Diccionario Mapuche" gives us a lot of Mapuche words which
are not otherwise accessible and helps us in this way to get
acquainted with (traditional) Mapuche lexicon, and the basic
words can be looked up by means of Spanish. You are not taught
how to speak the sound symbols employed, and there is no
grammar, so you will not actually learn this language with this
dictionary, but "Diccionario Mapuche" offers sufficient
materials in Mapuche to combine profitably with some grammar
still to be offered to the interested reader. "Diccionario
Mapuche" offers interesting chapters on Mapuche mythology
and beliefs, legends, and also a chapter on Mapuche chiefs which might be of value to Latin American historians.

The author's love of the subject matter shines through; Mr. Ogg was a fine calligrapher and did the examples of the various hands in the text. In this era of grunge typography, which runs neck and neck with the Victorian era in the race for the title of Cloaca Maxima of type, Mr. Ogg's delight in the simple and elegant is a jewel to be shared. If you know a young person of an artistic bent, by all means get him or her a copy of this book!
