A delightful overview of the history of writing and printing
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-08
This book got me started with calligraphy in my early teens. It's an easy to read overview of the history of writing and printing--the most recent edition touches on the very beginning of computer-driven typography.

The author's love of the subject matter shines through; Mr. Ogg was a fine calligrapher and did the examples of the various hands in the text. In this era of grunge typography, which runs neck and neck with the Victorian era in the race for the title of Cloaca Maxima of type, Mr. Ogg's delight in the simple and elegant is a jewel to be shared. If you know a young person of an artistic bent, by all means get him or her a copy of this book!

Not a full-fledged biography
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-12
In 192 pages and with no footnotes, this is not a book which will tell you all you may want to know about Al Smith. But it tells his story well, and shows that up thru 1928 Al Smith was a progressive and able statesman. After 1932 the author admits that he appeared to have lost his empathy for the people he had done so much for. There are poignant passages in the book, including the account of the funeral in 1944, according to this book attended by 200,000 people--which seems hard to believe. If you want a more thorough study of the subject, I recommend Empire Statesman: The Rise and Redemption of Al Smith, by Robert A. Slayton.

a fantastic book on bamboo engineering
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-28
This book is a vital reference for those of you who want to know more about building with bamboo. It covers bridges, airplane frames, aqueducts, energy storing flywheels, buildings, how to join and anchor bamboo, and much more.

The descriptions are good overall, sometimes excellent and very detailed, other times a little vague. This is not the be all and end all of bamboo books, but it is extremely good, and full of useful information.

Currently there is no better introduction to the cultural, historical events that took place in the Charpatian-Basin, than Mr. Simon's work. Although the same topic were discussed in other publications, this reissued version offers a bonus alternative.

Collectors of Iranian bronzes, especially readily available Luristan and Amlash production will appreciate this work as a basic reference work. Look also for P.R.S. (Roger) Moorey of the Ashmolean Museum for an additional reference. Identification of swords, daggers and axes for the collector is very useful and adds to the value of your collection. E-mail me at JPisc98357@aol.com for additional sources on early Iran.

Keep it alive in '75
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-15
I was born and raised in the Bay Area and grew up watching the magnificent, mustachioed, mavericks who were the Oakland Athletics of the 1970's. This book brings back all those wonderful memories of my childhood. Reggie, Campy, Sal, Joe, Vida, Catfish and all the rest are there to remember. This book has a lot of insight into how Charles O. Finley created the team that may be the last dynasty in baseball history. It is mostly written about the owner, showing his tenacity to survive and build a great team but also portraying him as the egomanical despot that he was. The only thing I disliked was the fact that it didn't go far enough in documenting the dismantleing of the team as well, which started with the loss of Catfish Hunter in 1975. However, if you are a fan of baseball and an A's fan in particular you should read this book. It was a very enjoyable read.

Complete Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde

the importance of being fanciful
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-13
oscar wilde has a wonderful way with words. no-one, not even his harshest moral critics, can deny this. if you're looking for the pointed and witty epigrams that peppered The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest, you're in the wrong place.

these fairy tales have soft edges, and are obviously apologues. each one deals with complicated moral dilemmas -- but provides no solutions; the reader is often left feeling frustrated by the lack of clear moral direction that other fairy tales tend to have in abundance.

written more for adults than children, this book is a delightful way to spend an afternoon... if you don't mind having to think.

A dictionary of Mapuche available again

Review Date: 2006-02-25
Mapuche (or Mapudungu) should not be absent in any serious
attempt to study and to compare Native American Languages
in all their wealth and linguistic/cultural heritage.
"Diccionario Mapuche" gives us a lot of Mapuche words which
are not otherwise accessible and helps us in this way to get
acquainted with (traditional) Mapuche lexicon, and the basic
words can be looked up by means of Spanish. You are not taught
how to speak the sound symbols employed, and there is no
grammar, so you will not actually learn this language with this
dictionary, but "Diccionario Mapuche" offers sufficient
materials in Mapuche to combine profitably with some grammar
still to be offered to the interested reader. "Diccionario
Mapuche" offers interesting chapters on Mapuche mythology
and beliefs, legends, and also a chapter on Mapuche chiefs which might be of value to Latin American historians.
