Beautiful! Magical! Like Never Before!

P. Craig Russell's pen makes sparks fly as it gives depth, color and life to every brilliant fold and cascade and ripple of luxury. More sparks fly as the pen portrays the poor and the raggled: the thinness of their bones, the dirtiness of their quarters, and, most poignantly of all, the pitiably concave looks on their scrawny faces. P Craig Russel makes Oscar Wilde's otherwise beautiful fairytales into something far beyond beautiful. The magic of the words and glistening sketches combined are enough to make one weep or wonder at the miracle of someone so talented as P. Craig Russell, and someone so talented as Oscar Wilde. Please buy this book knowing that it will bring you a treat like you have never experienced.

P. Craig Russell is one of the top artists working in the genre of the graphic novel today. His latest visual storytelling triumph in a series of marvelous adaptions of the fables and fairytales of Oscar Wilde flawlessly published by NMB Press is Fairy Tales Of Oscar Wilde: The Devoted Friend and The Nightingale And The Rose. Russell works his detailed and "museum quality" artistry to his usual high standards in the retelling of Oscar Wilde's original and imaginative stories. Readers of all ages will enjoy and treasure both the stories and the artistry of this outstanding graphic novelization. (...)

A witty and historical introduction to fetish carvings

Oscar T. Branson's _Fetishes and Carvings of the Southwest_ is a wonderful volume of many color images with a manageable amount of text. Since it was written in the first third of the 20th century, it has a point of view unlike that of the popular modern titles on the subject, such as McManis' series, Bahti's books, the wonderful Rodee and Ostler volume and others. (It is however more modern than Frank Hamilton Cushing's original work.) Leekya Deyuse and his work are featured prominently, and there are many fetish necklaces shown, as well as a few pages about the ceremonial jars (with lots of photographs). There are also a number of photographs of prehistoric pieces, with brief but helpful text. Many of the photos include credits to the individual or organization (including museums, societies and shops) that owned the depicted piece(s). What I most like about this book, however, is its occasional spark of wit -- Mr. Branson included bits of humor in some of the page layouts. My copy at least is a large format book of 64 pages, and except for the title page and the back leaf (is that the word?), it is entirely composed of color photographs with small areas of text. I think this is a fine introduction to the subject, but if one is very interested, one should also find and read some of the titles mentioned above.

Quintessential Wilde

In this selection of Wilde's aphorisms and epigrams culled from his plays, novels, stories, reviews and letters, as well as from hitherto unpublished material, Owen Dudley Dewards fully conveys the breadth and humanity of Wilde's mind and, in an introductory essay, he shows the place of Wilde's pyrotechnics in his thought and in his art. He sees that fireworks decade, the 1890s, as strikingly symbolized by Wilde's style as it was dominated by his life. For those familiar with Wilde's work this book provides an invaluable collection of his inimitable utterances; for others it will be the perfect introduction to Wilde the man.

IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR...
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-03
I first read this book many years ago, along with some of the author's other works, and decided to take read it again. Time certainly has not diminished the power of the author, winner of the 1967 National Book Award for his book, "La Vida", to take the reader into the lives of others. This is an anthropological work that reads as if it were a riveting novel, so fascinating is its subject matter.

The author takes the reader into the lives of five different Mexican families for one entire day, so that the reader can see how it is that they live their lives. The families are both rural and urban and represent a cross-section of Mexico at the time that this book was written. All but one of the families portrayed are poor, yet they all share some similar characteristics.

Written during the nineteen fifties, this book is, for the most part, a look at a culture of poverty. It is also a look at a culture that is in transition, shifting from rural to urban with its often resulting poverty and pathology. Yet, it is also a culture into which North American material comforts and influence were making inroads. That then nascent influence is often reflected in even the poorest of the families laid bare here.

The author basically gives the reader a typical day in the lives of each of these families. It is an intimate, objective look that creates a fascinating family portrait. It is a totally engrossing work of not only anthropological import but of historical value, as well. The author has managed to freeze in time a segment of Mexican life during the nineteen fifties. Who would have thought that reading about people shopping, preparing meals, and talking about their relationships would prove to be so fascinating?

Those who are interested in other cultures, as well as the way people live their lives, will really enjoy this book. The author provides a fascinating, freeze-frame glimpse into the lives of others. I simply loved this book. Bravo!

Although it's not their best known musical, Flower Drum Song is Rodgers and Hammerstein at their greatest! I really enjoyed the fact that it included songs from both the 1958 and 2002 Broadway versions. The arrangements of the songs make the songs playable and wonderful for a "normal" musician.
