The Star-Child learns mercy and compassion

A charming, philosophical fairy tale by Oscar Wilde about a baby boy found by a poor woodcutter in a bright and beautiful star. The woodcutter adopts the boy, who grows up extremely beautiful but also arrogant and cruel. He blinds and maims the animals of the forest, and shows no pity to those who where weakly or ill-favoured.

One day he cruelly turns away a beggar-woman, who is his mother, and his beauty is turned into ugliness. He begins a quest to find his mother to beg her forgiveness. Written for older children and the young of heart , in the fine prose of Oscar Wilde.

When a poor woodcutter finds a baby abandoned in the woods, he takes the boy home and raises him as his own. The boy grows up to be beautiful in the extreme, but also arrogant and cruel. When his mother shows up a dirty beggar, he rejects her, and is cursed by having his beauty turned to ugliness. Setting out to find his mother, and gain her forgiveness, the star-child learns a painful lesson in humility and generosity.

This is a touching story written by a master storyteller. Fit for children or adults, it is a touching story with a great lesson in humanity.

This is a terrific book with terrific material to present. It is part of a wonderful series. The organization, text, photos, and drawings are all excellent. More authors/publishers should learn to present architecture this well. It's a book I study often for inspiration as Forbes' work is very elegant and spare: qualities more architects should aspire to incorporate into their work, rather than the stylistic faddish gestures all too common today. This is a favorite book in my library.

The careful photographs compliment the equally fine details in the buildings of this excellent architect. After a year, I'm still looking at it often.

This is perhaps the best value in pictorial architecture books. For under $20., this book has great photos, straightforeward text, clearly reproduced drawings (including construction details!!), all superbly graphically designed. Even if the architecture doesn't appeal to you, the overall presentation of it in this book will. If you do like the architecture (which I think is a beautiful modern adaption of conventional New England vernacular), then this book is a must-have. You won't find this quality in books two or three times the cost!!

Diabolically Provocative and Entertaining Sci-Fi

Gentle, voracious reader, permit me to share a confidence. It was only by the most blissful of accidents that I became acquainted with the obscure but hypnotically arresting Sci-Fi masterpiece Tetrasomy Two. So to help this marvelous book find a wider audience I hereby consign it to the fiendishly viral mechanism of the Amazon review process. I hope you will consider reading it.

Tetrasomy Two is an exceedingly well-formed, deliriously readable, and psychologically insightful (the author was, after all, a psychiatrist) story about a super-intelligent human residing in a mental hospital. This conceit is deceptively simple. The execution, however, is unusually sophisticated. Without revealing too much of his technique, I will note that Rossiter brilliantly de-familiarizes the traditional patient/hospital narrative. Although the shifting states of mind of the narrator can be, initially, bewildering, the narrator's irresistibly likable geekiness pulls you into his world (and what a fabulous world it is!).

The quickening of singularly extraordinary mental faculties, to a degree that verges on madness, is explored persuasively and in an acutely satisfying way. The author takes you on a terrifyingly surreal, careening voyage to the very edge of perceptual reality. This is science fiction that daringly re-conceives the genre. So travel light, but do come along for the ride.

Would a truly extreem intelligent person bother to interact with people?

Tetrasomy two is the name for the extra chromosome pair that the protagonist (a young psychiatrist) discovers in his vegetable patient. A patient that seems to have much more influence on his environment than one would expect from someone who hasn't spoken or moved for nearly 50 years. Rositter describes the search for answers of the doctor, and how he tries to walk the very fine line between sanity and madness in discovering the disturbing thruth.

The book has well rounded characters. It's a good read, has tension and speed, and really gets to you. Though this book is classified as science fiction, I'm sure people who like books on psychology, ESP, hospitals or horror would also really appriciate this book.

I read this book when it first came out. It is a must read book for people of all ages.

His first was shows the struggles of a young American of Mexican decent making his way in life at an early age. When Roy Benavidez entered the Army he had no idea what was to become of him for the rest of his life.

Roy's second war covers his time in the military. His training is explained in this book. His tours of duty are also explained. His courage under fire is really covered very well. He wasn't suppose to be on board a chopper when it went to rescue some fellow soldiers but he jumped on at the last minute to help in any way he could. He soon found himself embroiled in a battle for life--his life.

He was one of a very few survivors that fateful day. His struggle to live makes this book. BUT his third war was that of fighting the US Government for recognition of what he had done--and yet it wasn't he who was doing the fighting--it was those others who survived who wanted him honored. It took more than a decade but he finally received the Medal of Honor.

As a footnote to this review--a ship was named for him and christened on 21 July 2001. The USNS Roy P Benavidez will no doubt see action in a war just like its namesake.

Excellently written book of the last medal of honor recipient (at that time) of the Viet Nam war. The award was presented by Ronald Reagan in 1982. Chilling account of the battle that earned Master Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez the Medal of Honor. Read about his boyhood life in Texas and his rise through the ranks to become a Green Beret, Special Forces soldier. Learn of his devotion to "duty, honor, country," the words he lived by. You will not believe his act of courage and bravery as he set out to save a trapped and doomed patrol of 12 men that had been inserted into the jungle, unbeknown to the command, amongst a battlion of over 300 Viet Cong soldiers. Although at a base camp in Loch Ninh, he disregarded his own safety and ordered the chopper to fly him into the fire fight. The book accurately describes the battle and Benavidez's heroism. His actions where one of the bravest in the annals of U.S. military history. Oscar Griffin is a great writer who does an excellent job of bringing the story to us. He utilizes his talent and skill in the use of the written word to not just bring us an historical account, but a story of great magnitude to life. The story keeps you riveted from beginning to end. It's more than a story of a soldier, it's a story of an American Hero.

This book helps to easily identify the various species of trees and shrubs that occur in the Virginia area. The descriptions are short, to the point and easily understood. Any one can enjoy this book and it is small enough to take on nature walks with the kids, or grandkids. In a very short time it makes even a notice seem like an expert in tree identification.

I live in Virginia so when I saw this book it was a "must have." It has great photographs of the trees and shrubs, showing both the full size plant as well as close-ups of the leaves and either flowers or fruits. Information is given around how large the plants get, colors and shapes of leaves, pace of growth and other interesting facts. One thing that especially drew me to this book was that when a plant is non-native, they let you know by saying it was introduced from Asia or Europe or wherever. They also give some ideas such as plant x can be grown well into hedges or fruits are made into jellies, etc.

We have been looking for this book for at least 5 years. We have a jewelry shop that specializes in Navajo, Zuni and Hopi Indian jewelry. This book is the best in showing where different turquoise comes from and how to identify it. We use this reference book as a means to identify turquoise and give our customers information. It is especially important now that turquoise is a very sought after commidity. I highly reccomend this book for it's usefullness at The Biggest Little Shop in Helen.

This is a must read book for any Vail skier. I am the son of one of Vail's pioneers (Sigi Faller) and enjoyed many wonderful days on the Mountain in the "Glory Years". The book provides a perspective of Amercian history (Camp Hale and WWII) and relates a romantic business success story, especially for those who are independent, entrepreneural and have a love of the outdoors. It's a fascinating account of finding recreational "gold" in the Colorado Rockies. An excellent collection of photos is included.

This book captures the spirit of Peter Seibert and Earl Eaton and the early days of their lives and their dream to build Vail and Beaver Creek. The trimuphs are great. Hiking Vail for the first time with skins on the skis and seeing the bowls, what a trip! Getting fired from his dream and then getting asked back during the '89 World Championships - wow!! - what a roller coaster of emotions. If you love great stories and you know the Vail Valley and the ski industry - this book is a must read!!

Finally, a great collection of Oscar Brown, Jr.'s lyrics, poems, and short essays. Oscar Brown, Jr.'s renowned lyrics to jazz standards such as "All Blues," and "Dat Dere," his classics "Signifying Monkey" and "Wham, Bam! Thank you Ma'am" and "Peace Pieces" such as "Hymn to the Homeless," and "Chant of the Welfare Mothers" are all collected here. As one of our foremost cultural and political activists, creative geniouses and undersung heroes, Brown's creative and political commitments shine throuh here. As fellow poet Kent Foreman puts it in the foreword, "the spoken word was Oscar's roots and his artistic genesis" who created "lyrics that were literature."

A Walk on the Wilde Side

Review Date: 2008-06-24
Who was that Man ? is a meditation and celebration of the form and meaning of gay life in London in the 19th century and the 1970s and 80s. Neil Bartlett puts together a collage of thoughts, excerpts and pictures to find the common threads of behavior and the disparate ways of understanding. He analyzes Wilde's work and life to find its relevance and irrelevance to today; the ways in which Wilde's downfall and persecution cast its shadow; the not very hidden subtext of all of Wilde's work that Wilde desperately denied as he fought for his life. Bartlett has ransacked the British Museum Library and the Collected Works of Oscar Wilde to uncover and restore forgotten history. Read together with Richard Ellman's biography and Neil Mc Kenna's Secret Life of Oscar Wilde, this book illuminates and goes far to explain Wilde's intentionally fascinating life and works. But more than that it casts light on the whole swath of gay experience.

A gay Londoner of the 80s goes searching for his roots and finds Oscar Wilde, a complex figure early on in the history of the cultural and social construction of twentieth-century homosexuality. If you're interested in Wilde, this is a very good book to read along with Richard Ellman's more standard biography.

This is an absolutely great book and it's too bad it's out of print and nobody seems to have read it! I have been listening to the audio tape in the car. The reader is a little over-dramatic in places...like he makes a walk down the street sound as breathless and ominous as a murder scene...but on the whole, he's excellent, too. It has mystery, wit, excitement, suspense! And Oscar Wilde to boot. It's completely captivating...bring it back!

This was the best bit of historical fiction I have ever read. I can't believe it's out of print. In an attempt to boost his income, Oscar Wilde tours on a lecture/performance circuit across the USA. Unfortunately, as his retinue crosses the West, dead prostitutes start appearing in ever city he and his entourage visit. He becomes a prime suspect, and attempts to solve the mystery himelf with, as he puts it, "...a systematic application of the poetic imagination." It is a wonderful story, with all the elements of great Old West Literature, including horses, trains, gunfights, Doc Holladay, a little sex, and a herd of goats.
