I keep on buying this book. It looks like I can't keep it. Each and every copy seems to find its way into other hands and perhaps minds. I enjoy the aliveness of these interactions, the awareness, being in the moment, beyond conditioning.

Be aware. Zazen. The living Zen of Suzuki Roshi!

I keep coming back to this slim volume

It has a directness and brevity that seem to cut through in a way that longer works do not. I will say that having read other books by Suzuki Roshi, I found extra meaning in some of the shorter quotes that may not be there for all readers.

I was concerned that the book's brevity would detract, but I've come to feel that this is it's real strength. If you are like me, you get more books on subjects like this than you can ever read. This one was so short and pleasant that I did read it. And finish it. And re-read it. Good for a quick dip into it's pages or to read cover to cover.

Highly recommended.

To Shine One Corner of the World - Moments with Shunryu Suzuki
Stories of a Zen Master Told by His Students
Edited by David Chadwick, 2001
Broadway Books
New York

"We say, to shine one corner of the world -- just one corner. If you shine one corner, then people around you will feel better."
Shunryu Suzuki

It has been said that when the student is ready, the master appears. To Shine One Corner of the World brings Suzuki Roshi to us through the gift of his students' recollections as beautifully as if we suddenly turned the corner and he stood before us. The editor of this delightful book, David Chadwick, studied and was ordained by Suzuki Roshi 30 years ago. The success of this small book lies in Chadwick's ability to allow the essence of Suzuki Roshi to shine through each page without extraneous editorializing. The words are those of Suzuki Roshi's students. The humor, the complexity, the mischievous nature of this Zen master is evident from first page to last.

Chadwick opens with a simple introduction of Suzuki Roshi's journey to the west coast of the United States from his native Japan and his mission to bring Zen Buddhism to the west. The introduction also includes a wonderful, straight forward explanation of the precepts of Zen Buddhism and Suzuki Roshi's teaching method, primarily silence. This leads us to a greater understanding of how, thirty years after his death, his students still recall his words. Chadwick presents these brief moments in time for us to interpret as the lessons appear for us.

Suzuki Roshi may not have spoken large quantities of words, but the words that he did speak were not limited to intensely serious profundity. From the student who received jelly beans after lamenting his snack habit to the student who was told "You get a gold star" when he sought the master's approval to putting a napkin on his head in a New York restaurant, we are shown that the master believed in levity as a powerful teaching tool. And yet, Chadwick also gives us a glance of the complexity of the master as Suzuki Roshi tells a group of students "When I say don't move, it doesn't mean you can't move."

To Shine One Corner of the World offers 122 moments experienced by students present during Suzuki Roshi's lifetime. Each vignette appears on an individual page leaving generous space for your own hand written thoughts as you contemplate the light of the master's words. The contributors to the book are listed in the back of the book so that there is no distraction from your experience of Suzuki Roshi within the pages. This small book shines with peace as the Suzuki Roshi's impish smile looks out from underneath shade trees in a photograph set within the lovely graphic design of a lotus blossom. David Chadwick has given us a jewel to be read again and again throughout all the days of our lives.

This book's contents is approximately 123 pages long, on each page there is anywhere between 2 to 6 sentences. Very short, yet often insightful, tidbits of wisdom on each page. The way I would recommend reading this book, is to not read it all at once. Rather, pick the book up for those times of great doubts, select any page-and read. It's simplicity is it's best quality. Sometimes we can become so lost down the philosophical or intellectual road, that we need a book like this to say: the tree is a tree. But no, there is more to the book then that.

For anyone interested in further reading into Zen, I would recommend The Compass of Zen by Zen Master Seung Sahn. Seung Sahn delves right into the 3 schools, Hinayana, Mahayana, and Zen (the two latter being the same mostly). The reason why I mention Seung Sahn is because I have a lot of admiration for his teaching style-no one compares. But, that said, Shunryu Suzuki's books, especially Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind-are at the very least-insightful.

The following is an example of the sort of page you may come across in this book:

A student, filled with emotion and crying, implored,"Why is there so much suffering?"

Suzuki Roshi replied,"No reason."

Enjoy this book:)

Yet another stunning book from David Chadwick. Though it resembles a classic koan collection, Chadwick deftly skirts the hazard of presenting a collection of "profound stories". Chadwick's own considerable personality is not in evidence, the tone of the book is always sweetly understated, and the reader is not obligated to grapple with worshipful pretensions to piety. What fun.....

We loved this humorous collection of international grumbles about the mixed joys of travel. Curmudgeonly quotes from a wide-ranging assortment of grumpy notables from George Bernard Shaw to Dave Barry cover topics from specific destinations, from Akron to Winnipeg, plus notations on food, transportation, and accommodations. Great little book for bathroom reading, bedside tables, and whenever you're feeling grouchy and need a smile.

For everyone who has slogged through long car trips, hellish flights, and tried to have a good time at the other end. Guaranteed to bring a smile to your favorite quotehound on the go!

Don't waste your money. If you are looking for humor or insight
into the political world, this won't do it. If you are looking
for a cheap hit piece on George W. Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger, written by a radical left-wing professor, here
you go. There is no sign of research or thought, just a lack of
humor, and an inability to recognize humor when it is obviously
spoken in jest.
Spend your money elsewhere, this title is misleading.

In the radio business, I get to interview a lot of politicans, and I respect a lot of what they do. It's great to have a book that takes a humorous look at some of the things said in public, which were probably not intentional. It's great that politicians can laugh at themselves. There is enough tension in this society, and a little humor is always welcome.

I had the chance to interview Rueter on my radio show "McAndrew in the Middle" on WHBL and was impressed with his wit and humor. We need more books like this. We take ourselves too seriously!

Another great book on this subject was written by Wisconsin State Senator Carol Roessler! :)

Dr. Rueter has done us all in the American Government teaching profession a true service: 2 books of comedic quotes that both Republicans and Democrats have said and that we can say again - in "fair and balanced" lectures that can, if applied in appropriate dosages, awaken some of our students from their MTV comas. O'Reilly and O'Franken watch out - the O'Rueter Factor is coming!

Out of the mouths of Hip Hop artists come intellectual quotes that make you wonder did they actually say that. Dropping' Science: Straight-Up Talk from Hip Hop's Greatest Voices edited by Denise L. McIver makes you drop your mouth and take a second look.

Straight up talk is an understatement of what you will read in Ms. McIver's book. She quotes various Hip Hop artists on every phase of life. From self-esteem, truth, passion, power & respect, and love & sex, to staying on the right path. You will truly be amazed at the rationale of our top Hip Hop performers.

Although there are some quotes which made me want to scream or jump in their faces to say, "oh no you didn't say that," and some that had me smiling and thinking she/he is really deep. Dropping Science demonstrates how everyone looks at society and life differently. Ms. McIver takes you through various topics highlighting the performer's perception of life. Many of them have successfully carved out a niche making them rich and highly respected among the younger generation. Several of their quotes reflect on their upbringing, support from family and friends, the struggles, and doing things that were not morally correct. Their honesty is truly reflected and appreciated.

After reading the book, my first thoughts were "why don't they reflect that in their music sometimes?" But who is to say they are not reflecting those same sentiments through song and music. It's time for the older generation to take a moment and really listen to their words, myself included. The Hip Hop culture has truly come full circle and I have to applaud Ms. McIver for opening the door through her book for the misunderstood to finally be more objective to understand this rising culture.

You enjoy their music, yet you don't really know what goes on in their minds. Well take a moment and read Droppin Science because it's definitely a great educational guide allowing you to see the other side of artists such as Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, Will Smith, Bow-Bow, and Ja-Rule just to name a few. They along with the other artists will have you thinking and looking at society issues from a different perspective.

The book is unique, colorful, informative, yet original, and definitely an eye-opener. You will truly enjoy.

Droppin' Science is the best compilation of zen wisdom from the 'hood I've ever read. For anyone who thinks all hip-hop artists are merely about bling-bling or bang-bang, think again. McIver seems to have amassed all the top names in rap and hip-hop giving advice on everything, life, love, respect, success... you name it! What this book really makes clear, is that it doesn't matter who you are or where you came from, we all basically want the same things in life -- a chance to pursue the American dream, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I'm definitely buying copies of this book for all my young nephews and nieces to read. I'm betting it will open their eyes and inspire them to even greater heights!

For the multitude who are fully immersed in this genre of music, this book is nothing short of inspirational. These people have a lot to say and this book shows that what they have to say can help all of us live better lives. Most of the science quotations are not from Einstein, which is a shame because Einstein's prose shines in comparison to the others. Most of the spiritual quotations are not from Buddha. Many are not even from Buddhists, but rather from Hindu writings, a scholar of eastern religions, and at least one Taoist that I recognize. I haven't done a background check on the others. That's like putting out a book titled _Einstein and Jesus, The Parallel Sayings_ and having lots of quotes from Muslim and Jewish religious figures. That might be an interesting book, but it would be unethically titled. That's as ethical as selling "scallops" that are really made with a cookie cutter and cut from some form of fish that easier to catch. _Einstein and Buddha_ would be more honestly titled _Physicists and Eastern Religions, the Parallel Sayings_. That would be less catchy and draw a smaller market, though.

I bought this book because of a strong interest in Einstein's writings related to spirituality and the human condition. So many of his quotes that I've read in quotation collections on the internet are brilliantly poetic. I did expect a few quotes from other authors, but here is what I got instead: The first chapter, _The Human Experience_ contains six quotes from Einstein, making it the only chapter in which Einstein's quotes are the majority of the science quotes. No other chapter does nearly as well. Interestingly the first chapter is about as far as most people get in a bookstore before deciding whether to purchase a book. The scientists who predominate in the rest of the book just don't have the focus and insight found in Einstein's writings.

In the second chapter, _The Touchstone of Truth_ (what an ironic chapter title) 1 of the 7 science quotes comes from Einstein. That's right, the only thing Einstein has to say about Truth in this chapter is: "Truth is what stands the test of experience."

Here's how the rest of the chapters break down:

Paradox and Contradiction - 0 of 8 science quotes are from Einstein.
Speakable and Unspeakable - 2 of 9.
Subject and Object - 0 of 10.
Name and Form - 4 of 10.
Illusions and Delusions. - 2 or 9.
Waves, Fields, and Energy. - 2 of 7.
Particles and Matter - 0 of 9.
Wholeness and Interdependence - 0 of 9.
Time and Space - 4 of 11.
Manifestation of Causality - 1 of 8.
Unity and Plurality - 3 or 8.
Physics and Mysticism - 1 of 7.

If Hafiz incarnated and started throwing parties in New York and LA, and if the impossible were to happen at one of his wild bashes -- if one were to start to feel bored -- he might start reading from this wonderful book.

Who knows... maybe Einstein and the Buddha will slip into a few dreams of those squatting in the White House and boost their IQ's substantially -- which could then well result in making this book (and maybe a few Hafiz poems) mandatory reading before military service or even a mere drivers license was bestowed. And maybe everyone would be required to carry this book in their golf carts -- and if one forgot it (for even one hole) helicopters might swoop in and administer breath tests that were so sensitive that alarms would go off if you were a religious bigot, that is if you were anti-Einstein.

I better quit this review; the FBI might hound me, and
water-torture me into a Republican.

Nonetheless, what a wonderful work to remove the superstitious impression on eastern religions of people who narrow-mindedly believe in science. Thank you so much!

I finished this delightful book this morning and went for a walk. My mind played over the objects in my life and my perceptions of them--shoe on sidewalk, air on skin, and even the sound waves bringing the blaring rap music to my ears from a teenager driving by. All these objects have qualities and values that my western mind assigns to them: the warm comfort when the heat of the sidewalk rises through the sole of my shoe to my foot, the pleasant coolness of the air on my skin, and the obnoxious assault on my ears from 110 decibels of mobile audio. But, at the quantum level, all is the same and indistinguishable, just as proclaimed by Buddha.

By juxtaposing quotations from quantum physicists and Buddhist scholars, Thomas McFarlane shows us how prescient the eastern religions were, and how relevant they are for our quantum world. This is a truly wonderful, thought-provoking little book.

Like another book published by Jewish Lights, "The Gentle Weapon" (see my separate review of it) this book of short teachings and aphorisms of a great Rabbi of 2 centuries ago brings me comfort. In a book like this, it is best to go through it and find, perhaps two or three entries that have special meaning to you and then refer to it over and over again. There is one entry which states that attempts to get closer to God are never wasted even if you fail to reach your goal. Through some profoundly emotional times, I have prayed fervently only to have things turn out disappointingly. Therefore I ponder whether I am indeed better for searching for God even though at times I have been left empty. I recommend that you search for God by finding the entries in this book that reach you and then truly thinking about their meanings.

This pocketsize collection of pithy quotes and classical Hasadic stories from a mystic rabbi may ironically appeal more to New Age spiritual seekers than traditional synagogue worshippers. Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810) avoids obscure religious references to any holy book while encouraging readers to "never despair!" and "get into the habit of dancing."
"Always remember: joy is not merely incidental to your spiritual quest," warns Nachman, a Hasadic leader in Ukraine during a turbulent time of religious persecution. "It is vital." Nachman's inspirational quotes, often given in imperative sentences, focus on the need to liberate yourself by maintaining hope and secluding yourself daily.
Adored by his followers, many modern readers will find his extremely optimistic assertions questionable. "When troubles come, as they will, take comfort in your faith that whatever happens is for the best," advises Nachman. This soothing advice, especially in light of the Holocaust and suicide bombers, remains a very difficult task for contemporary adults.
Still I have found myself drawn to this wise little book on many somber, pensive occassions. The Rebbi seems like a kind, tolerant older brother urging me forward toward the light. "Go carefully: spiritual growth must proceed slowly and steadily. Too often we want to improve ourselves and our relationships so quickly that we make ourselves frustrated and confused." Doesn't that sound very apt for the 21st century?
For whatever reason, I have found myself giving copies of this book to friends during times of emotional confusion and mild depression. It seems to strike a familiar chord and ease burdens. What more can a thin book do?

This book has brought a lot of comfort to me and my friends. I am a Christian, and I love the wisdom imparted that spans religions and speaks to our hearts. I have given this book to some of my friends who are Jewish and they cherish the book, it has given one solace in the death of her best friend, and the other keeps it by her bedside, to read daily. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to live a happy and God-filled life!

This book has beautiful, moving quotations full of great wisdom and advice from Rebbe Nachmann that will provide inspiration at any point in time in one's life. My only complaint is that there are not more of them in this book. It is disapointingly short (about 100 pages with 1-2 quotes a page), especially for the price.

Mr. Dahr's brief, readable collection of his own thoughts and selected quotes from various well-known thinkers and artists provides sound advice and insightful observations. The Examined Life is not an instruction manual for those looking for easy answers; instead it helps get like-minded readers pointed in the right direction. A useful book both for readers who are already thinking while living and people who have yet to give self-awareness a try.

Even though, I have been living abroad for about a year, I still have those moments that are difficult. I call them the "what the hell am I doing here moments" don't get me wrong it isn't the place, it is living abroad away from loved ones and among cultural things that are very different from home.

There have been two books that I consistently go to when I need to regather my thoughts... this one, and Alain De Botton's Consolations of Philosophy. I will need to order another Examined Life, as I just gave my copy to a friend in need.

I want to first congratulate you on your accomplishments with your two novels, and hope to read many more literary works from you in the near future. I truly enjoyed reading your book, 7 relationship tips for Sisters. The advice is very practical, yet rewarding for many sisters who are looking to establish a long-term, fulfilling, committed relationship. The book is very fast paced and gets directly to the relevant points. I have benefited a great deal from reading this literature and feel that I am more knowledgeable about how men not only think about relationships, but what they are ideally seeking from them as well. Keep up the good work!!

I enjoyed this book! For one, it is easy reading and straight to the point - no beating around the bush and the information provided is realistic and useful. I'm appreciative that the book is from a man's point of view and some of his suggestions and advice is based on his own experiences which made me cherish the reading even more.

I really felt the positive energy in the words coming from a brother who can speak so bluntly with compassion to us sisters. It's good to finally see a man (black man) lay down some law in a intelligent manner so that we can all get this relationship thing right today! I've seen my share of drama so I could relate to what the book was talking about. Mr. Long it was a pleasure to meet u in philly and you were true to your word in saying that this book would certainly be an experience. Keep up the good work.

I loved this book! It was truly a pleasure to see a man speak with honesty and from the heart to us sisters offering good advice. Mr. Long's book is a breath of fresh air and it inspired to evaluate my own choices in the men I've dated in my life. As hard as it is for some of us to admit ladies, we are responsible for the dogs we choose to lay down with. We gotta shoulder some of the blame and look within self if we want to stop complaining about only finding "no good" men. My brother keep doing ya thing. we need more strong black men like you!

Thomas Long has taken on the arduous task of talking women through
the highs and lows of relationship drama. Here are some excerpts
from the seven categories he chooses.

The Bag Lady Syndrome: Long strongly suggests that women take time
to be alone after ending a bad relationship so they can adequately
heal. Once they've taken the time to throw off the emotional baggage
of the past and are healthy again they are ready to re-enter the
dating scene.

A Vision Shared: His message is to avoid getting stuck in
relationships with individuals who are not on the same career path
or who are still trying to find their way. Don't be a career oriented
woman with a mate who is either "in-between" jobs or merely content
to live off his woman's generosity.

Social Compatibility: Avoid the jigsaw puzzle syndrome; trying to
arrange fragmented pieces into a perfect fit. If you have a man in
your life who does not share some similar interests with you, the
chemistry will probably not last.

Role Definition/Shared Responsibilities: Set some boundaries; With
no boundaries being set at the beginning of the relationship, neither
party is clear as to what constitutes non-acceptable behavior.

Spending Quality Time Together: First, it's important that each party
retain their individuality. So both the man and the woman should have
a set amount of personal time away from their partner to keep harmony
between them. But they should amorously use the time when they are
together as an opportunity to exploit the time they were apart.

Keep The Flames Burning: It is important to have a good sex life
with your partner, good sex eases tension. Sexual chemistry between
partners is one of those mediums of communication that needs to be
maintained and constantly improved upon if the relationship is to
last.

Game Recognize Game: An unscrupulous man usually sends a lot of
warning signs, often unconsciously, which tell you if his agenda is
not sincere. The problem is many women choose not to see the truth
even when it stares them in the face.

With these seven relationship tips Mr. Long shares some practical
and insightful advice. He does not propose to voice what women
feel; however, he does base his views on a man's interpretation of
how he sees women. Arguably, a couple of his tips do reek of maleness,
but that's not a bad thing. This book is well worth reading, and it
does bring home some unpopular truths.

But when all things are considered the book is not really that bad, in fact certain quotes are very uplifting. I would rather read this then one of the 5 thousand Chicken Soup for the Souls any day of the week.

You can make a significant, positive difference! That's the message of this book. It is filled with quotable insights from a wide variety of sources. "Great success demands great sacrifice" we're told on page 16 and many of these contributors have paid their fair share. This book inspires one to give. We're reminded on page 21 that "Ultimately we are remembered for what we give, not for what we take." In terms of cultivating the relationships in our lives, we're told "The quality of your life is determined by the quality of the people in your life." There are so many good quotes throughout this whole book that it is a delight to go through and try to select a few to give a flavor of what one will find. Consider the quote on page 32, "Everybody works hard when they feel like it, but only the best do it when they don't feel like it." In summary I'd just say "buy it and read it." It's well worth the money and effort.

Excellent for building character. Mottos for life.
