A fascinating portrait of a brilliant and often misunderstood man. De Mooy has selected, edited, and assembled the best passages from Adams' writings with lapidary skill. Adams held strong opinions on everything from patriotism and party politics to the social skills of New Yorkers -- and wasn't shy about expressing them. Anyone who enjoyed David McCullough's recent Pulitzer-winning biography, or Joseph Ellis's "Founding Brothers," will find this book an invaluable companion. Or for those encountering Adams for the first time, there could scarcely be a better introduction.

Rabbi Sidney Greenberg was a congregational Rabbi in Dresher, Pennsylvania for over fifty years until his retirement in 1996. He is the author and editor of a good number of books of sermons, and wisdom- writing. In this particular anthology he gathers the thoughts of a wide- variety of modern Rabbis from all streams of Judaism. There are many interesting and moving thoughts in this excellent collection. There are also many aphorisms I personally take exception to. But I prefer to give a few examples of those sayings I like.
No one person is alone when he can cling to a chain of tradition in which he is a later link. Rabbi Joseph Lookstein
In Judaism social action is religiousness, and religiousness implies social action. Leo Baeck
The divine test of a man's worth is not his theology but his life. Morris Joseph
Self-complaceny is the companion of ignorance. Solomon Shechter
Isreal as vital Jewish society will awaken Jews to become active participants in shaping the future of the Jewish people's moral and spiritual legacy.

I've read other books of Chinese proverbs and idioms. However, this one is the best written yet. Others have seemed confusing and clunky. This one, written in 1938, is easy to understand and much more clear. It includes, not just Confucius, but Mencius, Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu, Yu Tse, Yang Chu, Kang-Hsi and Kuan-yi-wu. There are also Chinese poetry, proverbs and Moral Maxims. All are definitely food for thought. I highly recommend this book!

Major General,USAFR,Ret.William A Cohen has put together an excellent book describing sixty-four criteria essential for success in the military, business and life in general. Not surprisingly, the criteria is the same in each endeavour. He has experience in war, been in leadership positions in business, authored over 40 books and currently a professor at UCLA teaching Marketing and Leadership. He should know of what he speaks; and in this book gives us the benefit of his broad knowledge and experiences. Reading this book is like attending his courses or seminars.
He uses the words of over 150 military leaders throughout history to cover each of the 64 criteria essential to Leadership. It is striking how these criteria have remained consistant throughout history.Nearly one-third of the book is made up of excellent reference material. He compares the ranks of the contributors from the different Services and Countries, which can be confusing. He gives a short Biography on 94 of the contributors;and finally an excellent index ,both by subject and contributors.
In the book, the author gives many interesting facts and stories about the contributors whom he quoted.
For instance;
Patton was such a great General;but why is so little heard about him after WWII?
Likewise,Napoleon was considered a military genius;so what led to his defeat and exile?
What would other combat veterns done in Custers position?
And did you know that,Admiral Hyman Rickover was born in Poland, graduated from the U.S.Naval Academy at 22,became an engineer, developed the world's first nuclear submarine, served 63 years and was promoted to full Admiral at the age of 82?
A great book for any military buff, and filled with material and criteria that is worthwhile looking for in present day leaders; in the Military,Politics and Industry.

The book is well organized for having only 61 pages. Most pages containing two to three saying chosen from well know writings as the Upanishads or extrapolations by a know writer.
Such as:
"Meditate and realize that this world is full of the presence of God."
Shvetashvatara Upanishad
Many of the sayings cover the same subject from a different angle. I am very fond of the "Hindu Teaching Stories." Most of them I knew already, however some are surprising.
Most of the pictures were contributed by Vanessa Fletcher. In the long run you will want to read this many times.
Contents:
Introduction ... 8
1. Santana Dharma ...10
2. Brahman ... 18
3. Gnana Yoga ... 26
4. Bhakti Yoga ... 42
5. Karma Yoga ... 50

Words to Hang on Your Refrigerator

This book is Helen Nearing's personal collection of astute quotations on various topics relating to homesteading and simple living. The topics are grouped into chapters, including: the rewards of country living, frugality and economy, weather and the seasons, gardening and the soil, woodlots and fire-making, money and true wealth, and solitude and contentment. Within each chapter, the quotations are organized chronologically according to when they were first published. Authors of quotations range from the well-known, such as Cicero, Shakespeare, and Thoreau, to others who have been forgotten or obscured by time. William Alcott makes a number of appearances in this book, as do Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Frank Lloyd Wright. To help you locate quotes by author, there is an index of authors' names at the end of the book.
Great words cover every page in this book. I would love to hang a selection of them on my refrigerator for prominent display every day, starting with "Men dig their Graves with their own Teeth and die more by those fatal instruments than the Weapons of their Enemies."-Thomas Moffett, Helth's Improvement (1590). One fact that becomes clear from reading this book is how long a history the philosophy of simplicity has in our culture. Ben Franklin reminds us "With frugality, there will be no lack; with extravagance, there's never enough." Later on, Frank Lloyd Wright points out "Many wealthy people are little more than the janitors of their possessions." In 1938, Lin Yutang saw simplicity as a movement of the future, arguing "I do not think that any civilization can be called complete until it has progressed from sophistication to unsophistication, and made a conscious return to simplicity of thinking and living."
One fact that struck me while reading this book is how even those who try to live simply today are blessed with a much higher standard of living than was ever imaginable for even the very rich in the past. In the chapter on woodlots and fire-making, a number of quotations refer to the need for conserving wood, using every scrap, and letting the house go cold at night. A proper fire that warmed the whole house could only be lit a few times a year. After all "it took fifty or more cords a year to feed the kitchen fire alone,"-William Reed, Life on the Border, 1882. Fifty cords of wood per year for just a kitchen fire?! Thanks to today's construction techniques and materials, and our modern efficient stoves, it's simple to keep a moderately-sized house (but gigantic by pioneer standards) at 80 degrees 24-hours a day all winter on only 3 cords of wood. Simplicity can be a wonderful blessing as it frees us from unnecessary appliances and possessions. Nevertheless, there are some facets of modern technology that can go a long way in making our lives truly simple.

This is a wonderful packet. There are 8 different note cards on one side and a book with quotes about tea on the other. I have gotten several of these to give as gifts and to use as door prizes at events. I also have had several for myself. Why would I need more than one? I have used the cards as invitations to teas, then have given the books as a gift to one of the guests. I keep one on hand at all times, never knowing when I may decide to hostess another tea. Actually, the cards are lovely enough to frame and I keep thinking ....... one day! *sigh* If you are looking for recipes, this isn't it. If you just love the idea of beautiful paintings and gracious words, this is it! Or remember the tea lover on your gift lists.

The Wisdom of the sayings in this book clearly shows that the fundamentals of all true teachings are:
...That Law does govern all, and that nothing can happen to us but what we ourselves have made possible and necessary. That there is a definate and well ordered plan for the evolution of spirit...
Read the forward of Wisdom Is One and carefully examine the subjects and ideas within the text. A clearer picture of what ancient, and not so ancient, teachers put forward is not to be found.
This book will be of great interest to anyone who thinks seriously about their own beliefs. To those who are seeking to understand more of what the Great Teachers, speaking from their own individual experience, taught throughout history, there is no better source. The student of comparative religion will find this book very helpful and thought provoking.
