The funny side of mathematics

The phrase "light, enjoyable reading in mathematics" is one that most would consider an oxymoron, but it does accurately describe Rose's book. At times humorous, other times profound, and all times interesting, this collection of jokes, limericks, and quotes manages to capture the difficulty, joy, and puzzlement of mathematics.
I'm sure all JRM readers have, at one time or another, thought "This paper does not need an abstract - it is abstract enough already." Concerning the distance between two points, even Mae West had something to say: "Curve - The loveliest way between two points." The great Bertrand Russell, too, must have brought himself down to earth on occasion: "At first it seems obvious, but the more you think about it the stranger the deductions from this axiom seem to become; in the end you cease to understand what is meant by it."
The reminder that even the great ones scratch(ed) their heads in bewilderment is a breath of fresh air and should serve as an encouragement to all those "suffering" through a mathematical encounter. With the only prerequisite a general knowledge of the field, it never fails to be understandable and belongs in the library of anyone with an esthetic enjoyment of mathematics.
My only criticisms are that the same quote appears on pages 36 and 43, and there is no blurb at the end announcing a sequel. But these, like the book, are light.

From the first chapter of Alla Crone's latest novel MAXIM, I was immersed in the page-turning tale of Lieda and Maxim. Alla Crone excels in her assessment of the political climate in Russia, and her portrayal of the Siberian characters is true to life. The story unfolds at a quick pace during the Yeltsin coup in Russia, as the two lovers are caught in the conflict between their loyalties and different life styles.
Although MAXIM can be read as an independent book, it is a sequel to Rodina, a powerful novel depicting the historical upheavals of Russian exiles in Harbin and Shanghai during the period from 1937 to 1957, in which Vicky, Lieda's mother, is the protagonist. After reading Rodina, I waied with impatience for MAXIM to see the light of the day, and I was not disappointed.
MAXIM has satisfied my interest in historical novels, in which real-life conflicts are discussed openly, now that the cold war is over.
Well done, Alla Crone. I would like to read more of your novels.

Okay, I know you can't vote in kings and futhermore I don't know where Nick would be voted in... Australia? Canada? Zimmbabwe? Is there anywhere Mr. Boving hasn't lived? This worldly knowledge is apparent in his writting. The Chaos Project was a fantastic combination of sci-fi\adventure with that one of a kind style. His hero, Maximm Gunn is often compared to James Bond but I think this is a grave mistake; He is a suave spy but thats about where the likeness ends. There is much more depth to Gunn than is given credit. This, more than anything, reflects Boving's own personality; one of intelect. The moments in the book where Gunn is alone in his hotel room are most insitefull and I can totally see this as a screenplay. It is not just a shoot-em-up, drive a cool car, and pick up chick-adventure. Nick has truely created a character and I look forward to reading more into him through out the series. It is incredibly refreshing to have a female villain, (the sexy but dangerous appeal),who is so in control and so over the top. IN honesty Boving realized that one who wants to dominate the world must be slightly extroverted. She also concocts a formidable plan which I will not ruin for readers to be. I look forward to the rest of the series...

Consider this your handbook for life. Your holy book. It is jam-packed with the most useful information you could hope to come across--how to look good, avoid traffic tickets, fall asleep easier, win arguments, and manipulate people for fun and profit, and everything else.
It is the single most useful collection of advice I've ever seen--with all the money you save on traffic tickets, getting cheap 1st-class tickets for the price of Coach, and EVERYTHING ELSE...it pays for itself.

Collins took more than 100 chess maxims from his teaching, chess history, chess masters and writers and categorized such that they can be used as a checklist during a game. They illustrated how to use each piece (King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight and Pawn) where and where most efficiently. Each stage of chess game (Opening, Middle game and Endgame) has its own set of maxims. There is a chapter about Exchange. And there are four more chapters about the topics that sometimes I feel I understand what they are and many times I just can't tell what they really are. Those topics are: Tactical Play, Positional Play, Combinations and Strategy. Each maxim in the book has a master game or endgame study to go with it for clarification. The final chapter is about a philosophy of chess, which has no games. The author had a wishful thinking that Fischer would come back and dominate chess again. The book was written in 1978. Fifteen years later, there comes another similar book, "The Tao of Chess." Comparing "Tao" to "Maxims", the former is about fifteen percent as good as the latter. Maxims passes the test of time and is good enough for beginning to immediate level.

A dark book from a dark political era claims that self-interest and arrogance is at the root of it all. It is pithy and cutting and entirely worthwhile and unfortunately neglected. Even though it has great observations, people should fight against its crippling realism.

This is probably the oldest complete book, written sometime between 3800 and 2350 B.C. in ancient Egypt. It is hard to imagine that such a text is not being published and that it isn't required in college courses in ancient literature. It is perhaps the earliest example of wisdom literature. It is a collection of reflections on life and on proper conduct: examples include "Do not be arrogant because of your knowledge, but confer with the ignorant man as with the learned;" "Do not inspire terror in men;" "Report your business without dissembling;" "If you are a leader, be pleased when you hear the speech of a petitioner;" and "Do not repeat slander."
