This book is one of my favourite books, period. So much so that I keep it at arm's reach beside my dictionaries, but often pick it up to read just for enjoyment. I disagree with the title, because this volume spans everything to do with existence: curiosity, discovery, disappointment, creativity, bureaucracy and government--what you could think would be carefully collected over a number of years by a person with a mind that hates to feel restricted. And this is exactly that. And if you think it's all highbrow stuff, prepare to be surprised. This isn't at all a collection of wisdoms. There is delicious fun here, too, sometimes at the expense of the quoted. As the foreward says, ". . . some quotations or aphorisms are so persuasive and so well put that one wishes one had said them oneself; others are wrong-headed...and others still tell us more about their authors than about their subjects: Hilaire Belloc cannot have intended to make a public exhibition of himself..."
There's even delightful poetry. A truly great book.

Nulman is a master anthologizer with a deep feel and knowledge for the Jewish Tradition. Here he provides profound sayings from Tannach, from Mishneh, from Gemara, and from subsequent Jewish religious literature.
This book like his book on 'Jewish Prayer' is a kind of encyclopedia-work made especially for 'looking up' and 'looking into.'

The Essays of arthur Schopenhauer; counsels and Maxims

Arthur Schopenhauer is the only philosopher who seems to me to take Art, in all it's forms, seriously, as a form of knowledge; he also seems to understand that we are essentially irrational creatures, fundamentally driven by our desires and emotions. he thus seems to be deeply in contact with those uncomfortable truths about ourselves which we would rather not know about.this makes the reading of him something that if taken seriously, can change one's life.
what higher complement can one make of a writer? He is vigorous in his so called pessimism, so he invigorates us. He is totally honest; He detests humbug and in clarity; he thinks that Art is something which can enoble us, and i agree with him. he is infintely insightful and deflationary of human pretention, always salutary; and last, but by no means least, i find him funny!

enough from me; Try him !

equal rights for all of God's creatures

Originally published in England in 1985, Jon Wynne-Tyson took six years to compile this wonderful, thought-provoking book.
The quotes are listed alphabetically by author, and in the introduction to this anthology, Wynne-Tyson points out the connection between how we treat non-humans and each other:
"Clear minds down the centuries have seen that violence man shows to man is inextricably linked to the violence we have inflicted upon other species and our shared environment", and recent studies on serial killers indicates that this is a fact.

There are many quotes on humanity and compassion towards all living things, and our environment as a whole, as well as specific topics like vivisection and vegetarianism, and they come from great minds like Leonardo Da Vinci, Leo Tolstoy, and Albert Einstein, to name a few. There are four pages of excerpts from the writings of Dr. Catherine Roberts that are remarkable in their insight, and it's a section that should not be missed.

Animal rights is the subject closest and dearest to my heart, as I believe in the equality of all creatures, and appreciate the collected wisdom of this book.

Facing Postmodernity: Contemporary French Thought on Culture and Society

Grounding the Post: A Great Synthesis
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-30
Silverman's book is a very good read and interesting throughout. Specifically, The argument provides a much needed balance between modernity-as-the-fixing-of-identity and postmodern-fragmentation-of-identity. Instead of allowing for an overpowering of the postmodern perspective (floating free from any relation to modernity), Silverman's work is best at making salient the tension between the two--the borderzone between identity-as-essence and identity-as-conjuncture. As Silverman notes, real people experience this tension in their lives; both being ironic in their social effectivity (I like his insight in applying this tension to the discussion of new racism). I utilize this same logic in my recently released book, "Native Americans in the Carolina Borderlands: A Critical Ethnography, Carolinas Press, 2000." In the end, Silverman's book provided me with another well-done synthesis of the ongoing debates between Modernity and Postmodernity--grounding the "Post" nicely in contemporary French society and culture. A must read for modernists and postmodernists, students of sociology, social theory, and cultural studies.
