Although a quick read, this book is still hilarious for anyone who's enjoyed the team locker room environment, and especially so for hockey players. Great for the coffee table.

This book was a lot of fun to read. I found that some of the qoutes in the book are useful for your own friends. It's not a serious book in anyway. It's just a good time and will make you laugh.

This is a great book for anyone who enjoys movies. It's light and fun and really does harvest some awesome dialogue from some awesome movies (but some I've never heard of). I also like how it's organized with categories like rants, insults, romance and my favorite "less than romantic."

I remember that line.

What a great collection. Many of these lines are standards in conversation among myself and my sons, but Jim brings back long lost memories of films that I had not seen in years. My wife and I have rented a number of movies based on this book.

This little book is "a true gift" to anyone seeking peace.

We opened a small Christmas package (this book) that came from a friend. Lo, our view about our own very own lives, as in "right now," were almost instantly and excitingly redeemed, simply by contemplating the simple truths found when merely reading the first two chapters! Call it good-timing if you must, but this little book easily brought us to consider how to let "time" serve us, NOW, as it truly is ... and always has been, well before this ole world "humanized" the concept of time with hundreds of false beliefs that lead us all to experience useless longings. Adopting the "now" is all that is available to find inner peace, if only we will see it. It's that simple. This book is stimulating, intellectual reading for anyone seeking inner peace by merely readily embracing most all of the wisdoms that are given in this book, simply for the taking!

A Wonderful Resource and Gift

"A morning-glory by my window satisfies me more than the metaphysics of books," the poet Walt Whitman.--
Klein's book is filled with inspirations and reminders of how to be present and appreciate the life we have. It is organized into chapters which include "Be Present," "Focus on What's Important," "Keep It Simple," and "Savor Silence." Among the hundreds of people and sources quoted are Jack Kornfield, William James, Lao-Tzu, Salvador Dali, the Bible, the Bhagavad-Gita, Oprah Winfrey, Socrates, Donald Trump, Leonardo Da Vinci, Yogi Berra, Kahil Gilbran. and Tina Turner. It is a wonderful gift for yourself and others.

The Song of the Sea was a wonderfully uplifting book. If you love the ocean and feel a strong pull to the crashing surf, you'll love to sit a read over these thought provoking quotes and beautiful illustrations. I first saw this book at a Bed and Breakfast on a coastal island and had to come home and order it for myself. I know the pages will help me get through till I can go back to the sea myself.

Beautiful artwork, moving text

Reading Robert Birnbaum's Speaking of Higher Education: The Academic's Book of Quotations, reminded me of my visit to the writers' museum in Dublin. Passing each object in the exhibit case such as a typewriter or journal activated an audio clip with the voice of the writer giving a reading from a work or poem. What Birnbaum does in this compilation is invoke the voices of university fathers and presidents, statesmen, professors and authors on the higher learning. How fortunate for us that Birnbaum has done all the reading and provided the Cliff notes from legendary giants such as Woodrow Wilson and Robert Maynard Hutchins along with authors Oscar Wilde, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington and suffragist Susan B. Anthony to contemporary luminaries Clark Kerr and P. F. Kluge and Derek Bok. For the first pass, it is a read cover to cover-I found it impossible to put down. This is a treasure trove of wisdom from some of the most eloquent voices in the English language-some you will ponder thoughtfully, others will make you laugh out loud. Birnbaum has written extensively on higher education and has grouped the quotations thoughtfully and expertly into Four Sections: Higher Education and Society related to purpose and social issues. Section Two on Academic Affairs including policy, learning, research, scholarship and teaching. Section Three consists of Institutions and Processes-the campus, institutions, governance and administration and management. The final section covers the educational roles of the faculty, the students, and the President. The book can be read again following the author index as well as the subject index. For example, in the entries on "corporalization," the words of the sociologist Thorstein Veblen spoken in 1918 reverberate today. Almost a century ago he cautioned about erosion of the ends for which the university is maintained through imposing "standards and tests, in the place of personal conference, guidance and association between teachers and students." Or imagine finding in one collection some of the pith of the likes of Friederich W. Nietzscke, William James, Anton Chekhov, T. S. Eliot, William Butler Yeats and Alfred North Whitehead. To me, it is only fitting to end with a quotation from Robert M. Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, "The real University is a state of mind. It is that great heritage of rational thought that has been brought down to us through the centuries and which does not exist at any specific location." Robert Birnbaum's Speaking of Higher Education provides the road signs.

I have been very lucky to get this book right from the author. I have been an ardent reader of Dr. Birnbaum's books. But this one turned out to be somnething that every person, - more or less related to higher education and its fields, must have longed and waited. You may find all the quotations from the beginning of the US Higher Education history to the present date. You will find here the quotes from the distinguished presidents of the most prominent universities and their views, perceptions and thoughts. The book is fabulously organized and covers all the fields of the higher education. It is a must-have-book for everyone - even for the present, incumbent presidents and deans and for those who think they may find themselves in that position, or someone who is interested in the system of the field. One will be amused by some humorous quotes and you will stay up till late night before you decide it is time to close the book. You will come to the last page and then go back to the front page and start anew. I really enjoyed reading this book. It is rather a compendium, encyclopaedia and great reference that has been missing from our shelves. Thanks to the author for his efforts.

delightful list of statistical quotes

Review Date: 2001-06-27
This is an interesting book that has quotes from people in various disciplines that who are statistical experts or have used statistical information. The text includes the famous quote of Benjamin Disraeli and the modification by Mark Twain.

There are quotes from Shakespeare, Thomas Jefferson and even some famous statisticians like John Tukey, R. A. Fisher, Stephen Stigler and George Box. The quotes are arranged by topics that are listed in alphabetical order. The author and source are given. Sometimes the author is known but the source is unknown.

It appears to be well researched but I did find one error. Peter A. (Tony) Lachenbruch is listed as Peter Luchenbruch.

A nice and important feature of the book is the author index in the back. Each author has a list of topics for which he or she has quotes. The page numbers for theses quotes are given.

There is also an index of topics that lists each author and the page number of their quote under the topic. Ordering is alphabetical throughout.

Also, some cute and sometimes funny cartoons are interspersed throughout the book.

This is both a disclaimer and a sort of review. I first found Eric's work in a book I was reviewing and fell in love with it. It looks like painting but is really--I don't know--retouched photos. I raved in the review and he wrote to thank me. I have written a couple of forewords for him since then. This book is my favorite of all he has designed. A little cut-out on the cover reveals the first photoart. From there it gets better because, though the content is inspirational, this book depends on the artwork to give a yoga practitioner a feel for the discipline.

Andrews McMeel does beautiful gift books, but this is one of their best.

It makes me feel really good when driving down the highway and seeing another car displaying a "Support our Troops" car magnet. It is amazing how quickly they spread across America and even some here in Canada. What also surprises me is that even more people don't have them. This is the first book I've come across on these and it has chosen to quote many famous people on Patriotism and Prayer. It shows tremendous support for the Troops and shines like a beacon for what makes America what it is. During this time when Evil forces are bent on the destruction of Liberty and Freedom, there is no greater target for them than America.Particularly during the last century, many times evil men, systems and countries have challenged Freedom and Liberty and it has been the Troops of free countries, led by America, and with the help and faith of God,that Freedom has prevailed. After reflecting on the quotations in this little book, you will be less bothered by much of what is being represented by the media,Leftist groups,secularists,anti-war demonstrations, cut and run and appeasement politics, political correctness,anti-christian agendae, and all other attempts to negate the ideals and patriotism that are the foundation of a free society.Everytime I see a person in uniform,I can't help but be thankful to them for serving on my behalf.
These thoughts may be a surprise coming from a Canadian. Unfortunately,Canada has drifted far to the left ,with 2/3 of the government, people and media becoming Liberal and Socialist. This has resulted in Canada leaning more to Europe and the weak and virtually useless United Nations to defend us while at the same time great increases in anti-Americanism and anti- Bush rhetoric. We have a few Troops in Afghanastan, but all to little for the threat that is upon us.As far as the rest of our support on the War on Terror is concerned, our involvement is pathetic.
I have been approached by people here in Canada who see my "Support Our Troops" with the stars and stripes, and they have commented;"What's with that sign, they're not "Our Troops"". I reply,"Maybe so,but they're protecting me too,and I for one appreciate it."
The review by Carolyn Howard -Johnson leaves me wondering .She talks about whether the artwork is paintings or photography.I don't see what she is getting at. My book has only simple drawings. There is no cut-out on the cover. My copy has a detachable car magnet ,same as the illustration .Carolyn seem very knowlegeable in publishing etc.;so either I don't get the points or there are different versions.
It is also commendable that "A portion of the profits from the sale of this book are being denoted to FISHER HOUSE. Gary Trudeau of Doonesbury fame has done likewise with two books.

Before you jump on the Anti- America bandwagon;

Imagine the world without America.

Inspiration for Educators and Noneducators Alike

I liked the premise of the book. As a teacher, I found it very inspiring to read the thoughts and words of fellow educators. That these educators have been recognized for their excelence at some level only makes it that much better. I did not agree with every quote, but even tha ones I disagreed with made me think. This is a book for any teacher. And the insights into the way teachers think also make it a great read for any nonteachers, as well.

I am an elementary school administrator who purchased this book as a gift to my school's Teacher of the Year. It is a great resource of educational quotes by Teachers of the Year from all over the United States (mostly national and state winners, but a few system winners as well). The quotes are organized by topic. Imagine my surprise to find numerous quotes from my state's former Teachers of the Year, whom I've personally met. I'm sure you'll find names that are familiar to your area. The quotes constitute a good mixture of the positive and the negative aspects of education. You'll find humorous anecdotes, inspirational passages, and heart-rendering recollections... What I love about this book is. . . .it is not filled with words of education experts or critics, these are the words of teachers - the best of our profession! And overwhelmingly, these teachers LOVE what they do. A great read, a great gift!
