I bought this book because I want to keep my finger on the pulse of my kid's goals, feelings, and social well being. This book is similar to 'adult' affirmation books, but it truly is written for teens - and very well written;
Every day covers certain themes such as manners, feelings, attitudes, goals, time management, & problem solving. Each day begins with a quote from a variety of folks (Eleanor Roosevelt, Chris Rock, David Robinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jesse Jackson, Sting, Mark Twain, etc.) A short paragraph gets you thinking & talking about the topic. The day ends with a topical affirmation (what the book calls "I-Statements") - suggestions about how to use the day's ideas in your daily life.
We have enjoyed this book. It's approx. 4'x6' and close to 400 pages. I keep it on the kitchen cupboard and plan to continue using it over breakfast throughout the school year.

Scott Peck has been a voice of peace and determination for the past 20 years. In this wonderful combination of two of his most famous and successful books, "The Different Drum" and "The Road Less Traveled" simple, insightful and useful tips are given for each day of the year.
They are a combination of spiritual growth and personal struggle to an eventually goal that are as true today as when Peck wrote both books.

This book is one of the best in its kind with clear comments about the history of combat handguns of all major gun manufacturers / countries and it covers several types of rare guns far better than Jane's does. Lots of pictures and data covering lots of guns. I would recommend this book to every 'modern handguns aficionado' !

Finally, an excellent reference book with original work, lots of identifying photos and an absence of reproduced catalogue pages. The book's content is consistent with the title and it is written and organized in a manner appropriate for a historical piece.
The author opens by defining frequently used terms, the book's structure and providing an overview; pistol versus revolver, military versus police applications, defense versus offensive weapons. This is followed by a synopsis of the development of pistols pre 1945, followed by an overview of pistol development trends post 1945. Good solid substantiated information, well illustrated and easy to follow. Pages 40 through 257, the section that follows, contains a country by country origin of each handgun; 26 countries are represented.
Country of origin coverage is not skimpy. As an example, over 50 pistols are represented in the U.S.A. section including specs, operation and field stripping information and photographs. Each company is covered in brief manufacturing and political framework, the government contracts that drove the innovation and products and a references to application. Special operations, standard military, federal agency and civilian law enforcement are referenced in context. The author did a great job of making the information interesting and logical in presentation.
There are six appendices in the book covering semi auto pistol design, the basics of sound moderators, modern pistol ammunition, conversion between metric and imperial systems, stopping power and sources. In order of listing; excellent coverage of the most often misused and misunderstood terms, better history and description than some books dedicated to the topic, good tech data not manufacturer listings, handy one page conversion table, surprisingly little value and out of context with the book. The index is not good, it is too little to be useful.
Negatives? The book does not contain firearms made primarily for the civilian market, but then there is no suggestion it would. So you won't find listings for Kel-Tec, Kahr or brands like Kimber and Springfield Armory represented. You will find S&W, Ruger, SIG and other labels frequently under contract with police departments. If you check Amazon you'll find a table of contents page and index you can see if the book's reach is long enough for your needs. In my estimation, the book is an excellent, professionally written text and a nice change of pace from some of the overpriced catalogue fodder that has recently made it to the book shelves.

Great thoughts from well-known people from around the world. I would have liked to have seen more biographical information on each person, though. Great variety. Scholars, writers, artists, and also some award-winning teachers, not to mention many Nobel Prize Winners, Presidents, and World leaders. Can't wait for the next one!

This is a very funny book. Robert Bender has polled thousands of school children on the best, the worst and the silliest advice they have to offer. There are gems such as "You're only a kid once -- get in trouble while you can" and "Never save your page with gum". Each page has four or five quotes with connected, humorous illustrations. A fun book to read a bit at a time. Might be useful book in a school setting during a unit about quotations or advice. This would make a wonderful present for a child in your life.

Robert Bender, author of Lima Beans Would Be Illegal, polled thousands of schoolchildren around the country to find out what important advice they would give other kids and grown-ups, wrote it all down, and came up with this must read, down to earth book, Never Eat Anything That Moves: Good, Bad, and Very Silly Advice from Kids. Some entries are thoughtful... "Be the kind of person that you would like to know." "Old people aren't as old as you think." "Your worst may be someone else's best." Some are silly... "Don't cross the monkey bars without underwear." "Spraying your hair with milk and then drying it doesn't dye your hair blonde." "Make sure the fish is dead before you flush it." And some are just plain weird... "Don't put a bee on a leash." "Never eat a magnet when you have braces." "Use Brussels sprouts for golf balls." But each piece of sage advice is kid tested and filled with insight, wisdom, and definitely, lots of humor. So as Mr Bender tells us at the end... "Don't forget to have fun when you grow up. We're all kids at heart." Read, learn, and enjoy!

Once in a while a handy, little book comes along that should be required reading for every college grad seeking his or her fortune in the game of business. Richard Stiegele's book, Never Read A Newspaper At Yor Desk, is jammed-packed with extremely valuable advice from a seasoned pro. The author also has a tremendous sense of humour which is a rare quality in these somber, dog-eat-dog days of downsizing and cutbacks. The book contains 467 statements as well as an index with topics ranging from acquisitions to trendy books. Stiegele's pearls of wisdom are concise, practical, easy to read and no doubt worth its weight in gold. It's a book that has earned its place in your business library.

When I saw the title of this book, I couldn't resist. I love books of quotes, and this one is excellent. Over 200 pages of quotes, which are divided by topic area. A great book to ponder and think about. I especially enjoy finding quotes that match current leadership challenges or opportunities, as I find the best way to often lead through a new situation or effect change or transitions is with a quote that helps people see the point from a different perspective. This book is full of very thought provoking material.
I will leave you a few to whet your appetite, and then I encourage you to grab a copy of this book.
"Care for the truth more than what people think" - Aristotle (Page 93)
"We have this fantasy that if we just have enough information, we can control events" - Barbara Biesecker (Page 123)
"The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it's the same problem you had last year" - John Dulles (Page 165)
This is a great book, for a great price. Enjoy.

A small collection of vivid sporting images and macho, psych-me-up soundbite texts, this book looks like a collection of Tag-Heuer commercials. It is expensive for its size, but a good buy ONLY for those of you who savor Nietzschean words and images and like to be inspired every now and then by strong words and images of athletes in determined action.
Buy one for yourself, and one for a friend.

A great gift for sports enthusiats, teens, or anyone familiar with No Fear as the book relates to everyone. I thoroghly enjoyed it, reference it regualrly, and have given it to several friends in the past couple of years.
