Everything about this guide is helpful - the text is clear and engaging, the photographs are stunning and fun, the listings for hotels and restaurants proved right on. This book got me really excited for my trip before I left, kept me great company while I cas in California, and is just as enjoyable now that I am back home.

This series of books are interesting to read and have beautiful pictures and maps. They are wonderful for armchair travel and to help in planning a trip as they give a wonderful overview of the history, culture and most interesting places to visit of the areas they represent. There is no detail as to lodging or restuarants so this is not the guide if that's what you're looking for, but I have enjoyed them and packed them on trips for help in planning sightseeing excursions and to help me understand and appreciate the history and culture of the places I'm visiting. They have enriched my travel experience.

A 21 year old edition in an excellent travel series (I have many books from this series, for their photography and cultural/historical revelations).

However, Taiwan has changed significantly over two decades; best to wait for the next edition and pay the extra $$.

While the book says its out of stock here at amazon, Barnes and Noble has it....i guess amazon has gotten so busy adding other sections, its taken its eye off books....too bad.

As usual, the Insight Guide gives pertinent and accurate information for the traveler who wants more than just where to eat and sleep. There is a smattering of history, geology, botany and zoology. All the popular spots are well covered and the more esoteric are not ignored. But the perspective buyer should kept in mind that though the Rockies extend well into Canada, this book only covers the U.S.A

Insight Guides Alaska is a wonderful book to own if you're dreaming of or are about to visit America's "Final Frontier". Covering Alaska from the Panhandle to the Arctic...from The Interior to the Aleutian Islands. In this book you will find interesting facts on Alaska's history and view beautiful color pictures--which more than convince you to see this place someday.

This book covers the major "cities" of Alaska...and offers a quiet retreat. While I read it I listened to some peaceful music--as if I was on a vacation.

As a seasoned traveler, the Insight Guides series have become my favorite travel companion. They are not the traditional guides that tell you the cheap places to stay and eat, rather they are detailed guides to the history, culture and things to see in the countries you will be visiting complete with great photos. They are well researched and I learn things about the country that even the natives don't know. If you are looking for a "where to sleep" kind of guide, you will have to purchase a second, more traditional travel book (like Lonely Planet, etc.). I personally would not think about visiting a country without first reading the "Insite Guide."

After combing the major bookstores in the Metro Detroit area, there are no travel guides to be found on Taiwan, until I found this one, and it is fantastic!

Why not, it is from the Discovery Channel people!

I did find only one other guide on Taiwan, but nowhere near the quality of this one.

I had bought a guide on St. Petersburg, Russia from the DK company, and I loved it. But most of the well known companies like DK, Fodor, Knoff, I don't believe publish one on Taiwan.

I am glad that the Insight people did, I am thourougly impressed. I will check them out from now on, when looking for travel guides for other countries!

This Insight Cityguide volume, printed in Singapore, is of glossy hard-stock paper. Each page has either a full-color photograph, or a full-color photo with text. This is more of a fabulous picture book, than a Fodor's-type guidebook. As such, it is mostly timeless as opposed to up-to-the-minute guidebooks that quickly become obsolete.
