Great Work from a Great EvangelistReview Date: 2002-05-03
Press, 1991. 203pp.
Author:
Chuck Kelley is the President of NOBTS, and former chair of the evangelism department. He has also written Learning to Share My Faith about personal evangelism.
Aim:
Dr. Kelley was attempting to present the story of Southern Baptist Evangelism, including its history, controversies, methods, theology and personalities.
Analysis:
The book has three sections: 1.History; 2.Methods; and 3.Theology. In the history section Kelley outlines the stages of SBC evangelism. From passion to function (1845-1906) decribes how the convention took on the responsibility of evangelism. From function to strategy (1906-1942) explains how that responsibilty became a convention wide vision. From strategy to harvest (1942-1955) looked out how the SBC began to reap a harvest and see large scale growth. The last period from harvest to passion (1955-1990) showed the need for continued revival. SBC methodologies, the second section, have included: Decisional preaching, Personal Evangelism, Sunday School and Revivalism. Behind these evangelistic methods are the theological distinctives of A Great Commission Hermeneutic, A Moral Responsibility, A Possible Task, and a Transferrable Gospel. The epilogue is the author's speculations of the future.
Application:
It is common knowledge among Evangelicals that the Southern Baptist Convention is one of the largest denominations in the United States. What is not well known is how the SBC grew to that size. Through an examination of SBC history, methodology, and theology Dr Kelley answers the question, "How did they do it?" with a scholastic passion appreciated by seminary students and pastors. Five Stars!

Howie FeelReview Date: 2001-07-12
If you are looking for solutions - a 'how to do this' type book - this may not be the book for you. What this book does is openly reveal the feelings of teenagers. Significantly this is done using the words of teenagers.
The book provides invaluable background information for teachers (what's really going on in the heads of those we teach) and parents.
The survey used to collect the information is included as an appendix at the back of the book.

One of the rare classic works on hypnosis researchReview Date: 2000-05-06
This is one of his most important works, where he reviews research that tests what happens during hypnosis. Can a suggestion cause a blister to raise ? Can someone's heart be stopped by a suggestion ? Do people really believe they are someone else in a stage hypnosis show ? Barber made some of the most careful tests of these claims and his results are documented in this book. He also introduces his original model for testing hypnosis, the task motivation protocol, where results are compared for people who are motivated to produce results vs. hypnotized to produce results.
Barber came out of all of this with the remarkable conclusion that many of the effects claimed for hypnosis were real, but that they don't require hypnosis ! He found remarkable powers of mind, but at the same time stripped away much of the mystique of "trance."
This book is a great classic of behavioral science, a must for anyone interested in hypnosis or suggestion from any perspective. It joins Hilgard's "Hypnotic Susceptibility," as one of the small handful of essential classics of hypnosis and suggestion research. It was republished in 1995, but quickly sold out of stock. If you can find a copy, grab it.

Excellent Compact Guide To IcelandReview Date: 2004-12-02
The book provides an overview, geographic information, hotel, restaurant, and nightlife recommendations, and multiple road trips of varying lengths that see all the common sights and many that are substantially off the beaten path. These road trips are from one to four days endurance, and are very well designed from my experience, although I can't personally attest to the attributes of the ring road between Hvammstangi and Neskaupatadur. I can say that the southern routes, and the routes to Pingvellir and the Snaefellsnes peninsula are very well designed. My favorites of the tours are numbers three and four. The coverage of the Skaftafell National Park, Jokulsarlon glacial lake (a must see: take the boat ride), Hvannadalsshnukur, Kirkjubaejarklaustur (one of my favorite little towns), Porsmork, and Stykkisholmur is particularly good. I was also amused by the coverage of the Vesturfarasafnid a Hofsofi, the only museum in the world that focuses exclusively on herring. (Iceland is known for many similar oddities, and that is one reason I love it so much.)
My only minor critiques of the book would be that the index is rather sparse, and some of the hotel and restaurant information (and a few prices) are out of date (which is to be expected.) One thing the book entirely failed to mention in the money section is that most businesses will take Icelandic kronurs and also US dollars.
This is a great little introductory tour guide to Iceland, with the emphasis on brevity and utility. I recommend it highly.
