Wow! Shades of Deepak Chopra and James RedfieldReview Date: 2002-09-11
What is the meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything? No, there isn't a sixth installment of the "Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy coming to a bookstore near you. Instead, you'll find "The 5th Sun - An Insight into Reality," written by Kelowna based writer / philosopher, Christopher Swile.
In his book, this expatriated Brit postulates that the meaning of everything is pretty much what each of us makes of it. Following that line of thinking, we all have a hand in creating what we perceive and call reality. If that's the case, then we - each and every one of us - are extremely powerful beings! "Thoughts have power," says Swile, "and what each of us focuses upon, is what gets manifested into the `real' world we all share."
What Swile strives to do in The 5th Sun is to take the reader on a voyage of discovery,
a momentous quest. "It's my attempt," he explains, "to open minds - all our minds - to reveal our inherent potential, and
reawaken the dormant secrets of our true nature. The importance of reestablishing our personal and collective self-belief
is clearly understood when we consider that nature defines that the survival of any species is determined by their ability
to evolve, and thus adapt to change. ...I believe this journey will reveal that our current perceptions and philosophies found
within modern society act to suppress this kind of knowledge. And, this suppression is maintained by our doubts, fears and
misplaced self-belief." - Wow! Shades of Deepak Chopra, James Redfield and even Stephen Hawking!
"We have to be open
to the idea that it's likely, there are other intelligent beings `out there'," Swile continues. "...Simply because we humans
exist on a rather unremarkable planet in the back water of our galaxy. It stands to reason a similar evolutionary progression
happened elsewhere in the universe. ...Another thing we humans have to learn to do is reason outside the box, and beyond what
`the powers that be' want us to think."
Topics covered in The 5th Sun take a wide swath - modern society, human psychology, religious philosophy, spirituality, mythology, ancient Egypt and Mayan cultures, the conscious and unconscious mind, and the Earth as a living, breathing entity, not merely a inanimate object whirling in space. - Uh-huh, Swile really has taken on the meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything!
How the book came to be - like the book itself - is quite unusual. "Actually, I didn't set out to write a book at all. It began as a collection of thoughts, a sort of journal. I was at a crossroads in my life. For the most part, I'd done what had been expected of me. You know - the job, the house and all that, but I came to a point where I realized I wasn't doing what I wanted to do, nor was I striving to attain my true potential and that's when the shift began."
Swile's take on the universe goes something like this: Everything starts with the self, the individual. If each person could achieve even a small portion of their true potential, the collective improvement will manifest itself in the `outside' world. "A good place to start would be treating other people the way you would like to be treated yourself," Swile further explains. "It's the `do unto others' rule and it's valid. If everyone in the world did that, the ideal situation would result in an end to war, and all forms of conflict, not to mention everyday stress."
Getting used to being an author with readings and book signings hasn't come easily for Swile, who had his first signing at Chapters, Kelowna on July 13th. "Even at this point, I'm still a little shocked and amazed that I have had a book published," Swile confesses. "I really do have to admit that even I thought I was the least likely person to ever write a book. It's taken some time for me to stop feeling odd when I call myself a writer and author. You see English was not one of my best subjects in school. In fact, I was bloody awful. It turns out I'm dyslectic but we didn't know that at the time. But maybe it was my dyslexia that allowed me to look at the world in a different way."
Though Swiles' book is not particularly thick, it does have depth, so don't let it's small size fool you. And, if you're curious to know why it's called "The 5th Sun," all will be revealed when you read the book. How's that for a cliffhanger ending?

A true treasure Review Date: 2008-09-19
Years ago I studied a central theory attributed to the scholars Wimsatt and Beardsley which claimed that the author's intention had nothing whatsoever to do with the meaning and quality of the work. I remembered thinking that Judaism has exactly the opposite approach. Intentionality ( Kavvanah) can at times determine whether the action has truly been done, or not really done at all. In taking on the whole range of subjects in which Intentionality and Will play a part Rabbi Cohen has done a wonderful service to the student and lover of Judaism.
This is a book which should not only be read, but studied over and over again.
A true treasure.
