This book is amazing. I recommend it highly to anyone who is looking for a new way of viewing the world around them. This book could possibly even teach you to live a happier life, and understand purpose better than ever before. I consider it is relatively safe to assume that if you are the slightest bit intellectually inclined, you will consider this book a delightful bit of information about a wonderous universe. Definitely try it out if you liked The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain.

Don't think that this book isn't worth reading due to the small amount of pages. It is amazing the way the author takes a fictional story and takes it to a whole new level. After reading this book, I will look at things alittle different, in a good way. As the author told me, a book to learn to learn. Very well done.

After reading Think Like a Winner, I was so eager to read anything Staples wrote. Though Think Like a Winner is definitely a "winner", this book by far was more powerful to me. The quote on every other page inspired me, and fed me when I didn't have time to read the text. His simple, easy to understand method of writing as well as the inspriring text has made this book my "bible" for daily living as I discover my true self. I love this book and recommend it to everyone without hesitation!
Hands down the best book I've read on personal discovery!!

In his book, In Search of Your True Self, Walter Staples combines the best information available on mind management and personal excellence. I have read and listened to many, many programs on these and related topics. Mr. Staples'book was easy to follow. I enjoyed the accelerated learning approach used where each topic was first introduced with a favorite quote, then followed by a brief explanation, and finally summarized and exemplified with a true story. It should be read and reread by anyone serious about reaching their maximum potential.

The Insight Guide to Turkey has breathtaking photos, and exceptionally well-written essays about the country, its history, geography, politics and peoples.
I read this book in preparing to host a Turk at my house. I was seeking an appreciation of the country and its culture. What I got was a fascinating read (I couldn't put it down) and a very balanced view, in addition to a great history lesson. I am left with a desire to see this country and meet its people!

Insight guides offer a rich history, political analysis and cultural insight to the countries they cover. By using locally based writers they get the insiders view of what the various camps believe in. For a discerning traveller who wants to know about the country, the people, geography, food, industry etc and for those who wish to travel independently, this is the book to read. It is not tourist guide which says stay here, eat this menu, see this statue. All that is left to the standard tourist guide writers. If you never travel to a country, you can know it through the insight guide. Because Muslim and Turkish cultures are so different from ours (and Turkish is different to Arabic Muslim) it is important to be aware of the behaviours that are considered polite and those that are considered to be rude. This book equips you to deal courteously with salesmen who would be considered pushy by western standards. Did you know for instance that it is rude to kiss your partner in the street in Turkey (or any muslim country) even if it is only a peck on the cheek -whereas it is polite for men to kiss each other in public. Why were Turks feared by all of Europe for seven hundred years? Why do the Greeks still hate them with such passion (if you want to insult a Greek just call him a Turk and see the reaction). For depth of analysis on culture, history and geography, to understand what makes the people tick, you should read this book. Then if you travel to Turkey you may, like me, find the Turks to be the friendliest people you have ever met. You may also understand why such friendly people are capable of being represented in quite a different way in Movies like Midnight Express. Vive la difference!
For anyone with Turkish friends.

This book is unmistakably useful as a guide for tourists visiting Turkey, but it will be of value also to all of us with Turkish friends. Turks are Middle Easterners, but not like most of their neighbours. This book sweeps away suppositions and errors and presents the Turks' history, culture, beliefs and ways in a clear and readable manner.

My family is from Trinidad, so I am already quite familiar with the island and its culture and customs. Nevertheless, I learned so much from this book regarding the rich history of Trinidad and Tobago ("T & T"). It is also an excellent travel guide. Photography is wonderful. I couldn't be any more pleased with this book. In fact, I will be taking it with me on my next trip to T & T.

This book was both insightful and accurate. It provided detailed information about the people, culture, customs and the lifestyle of the Trinidadian and Tobagonian people. There are many pictures representing the most popular vacation spots and the book provides historical detail about the areas and all of the influences of the various countries to colonize Trinidad. It provided a wealth of information for the average reader and even supplements the knowledge of the local Trinidadian who cannot accurately explain certain aspects of the culture. It is a must have book for every Trinidadian and Tobagonian and anyone who intends to visit Trinidad and Tobago. I can honestly say that the authors of this book did their research in an attempt to provide a fair and across the board view of all the racial groups which live in Trinidad and Tobago. The pictures are vivid and the diversity and beauty of the flora and fauna of Trinidad is beautifully exhibited in this book. The pictures alone would make one homesick and long to return to the beautiful island. This is one of the best sources of information I have come across on Trinidad and Tobago it provides, historical, geographical, cultural, political and social views of this wonderful paradise island.

The beautiful photographs and detailed maps in this book lead you along all the navigable rivers of Great Britain, France, Holland and Belgium. The writers point out the specific charms of each river (including less charming industrial areas you may pass), and there is a lot of very informative info on history, services, landscape and boating conditions. They are as good about warning you away from tourist traps, ugly places, and bad bargains as they are about leading you to the wonderful. A good index gives info about boat rentals and other services on the river. One could actually plan most of the details of a boating trip from the US with this book.

This is the only guide I have found of its kind for London, and it is superbly done. Not only does it profile all the obvious, big-name museums, but also details dozens of smaller ones like the Guildhall Clock Museum, the Museum of Garden History, and the British Red Cross Museum and Archives (to name a few). As with all Insight Guides the photography is first-rate, and the larger format of this guide makes it even more accessible than their standard travel guides. The collaborative style in which this book was written really works - it feels fresh and engaging throughout. I bought this book with the intention of doing research on the Tate Modern and Victoria and Albert Museums, and discovered more than a dozen smaller venues I had never even heard of before. My recommendation is that this is a must for art-lovers and museumgoers, and for anyone interested in discovering obscure of London they may otherwise overlook. If you are going to London to look at art, take this book and a comfortable pair of shoes!!

Important book by a significant educator

Douglas Sloan has written an important book challenging educators and all thinking individuals to reconsider their biases. Sloan explains how our modern frame of mind is caught largely in jargon and limitation of a reductionistic-scientistic culture. In others words Sloan says modern man thinks in parts without any feeling for wholes. Sloan quotes countless physicists and scholars who are aware of the present day dilemma of our scientific thinking.
So Sloan asks the question how are we to regain wholeness in our thinking and thusly in our educational system if we continue with current modes of thinking.
Using Owen Barfield as his lap-dummy Sloan seeks to regain mankind's original participation in life, knowledge and relationships to the meaning of words, fantasy, and the seasons. But interestingly enough Sloan does this by first finding those positive discoveries in the science of education (child psychology, curriculum, participatory knowledge)and relates these to the new types of thinking in quantum physics as well as various spiritual ideas of wholeness.
Only through a renewal of the ways of thinking about our humanity, can science and education Education itself be transformed into an education of the Imagination. Sloan is clearly aware of the rhetoric of modern institutions and seeks a higher synthesis between past wisdom, honest science, and the new wholistic thinking found in the work of cutting edge minds and noble hearts.
This book is an exceptional and fair-minded treatment of the essential educational tasks at hand and a realistic solution if not the only solution to a renewal of educaiton.

A good book is one that has interesting useful information, a very good book gives you principles to apply to an analysis of phenomena, but a great book includes the latter but transforms the framework of peceptions so that you never look at things in the same way again. This is a great book.

This book, ostensibly a book about education, is much more than that. Sloan has written a superb critique of the western mind's fascination with the scientific world-view, and the belittling consequences that this fascination has had upon the human soul. It responds brilliantly both to the forces of fundamentalism and the forces of atheism. Written with a rare combination of elegance and clarity, it is a book that can open minds and hearts to a much deeper understanding of our civilization.

Lonergan's other famous work is "Method in Theology," which is another must for students of Lonergan. In both books, Lonergan essentially comes to grips with the mess Kant has left us and tries to rectify the problem. Lonergan wants to rescue morality and moral categories from the threat of skepticism. Kant tried to account for how we "know." Kant stated that, "upon the occasion of experience" we become aware of categories latent in our consciousness (actually, "consciousness" would be a misnomer: Kant's felicitous phrase was "transcendental Unity of Apperception"). Kant only allowed for non-moral categories. Karl Jaspers criticized Kant and asked why we should be limited by the categories (the source of unity of experience) Kant bequeathed to us. Almost taking his cue from Jaspers (I'm not sure he did), Lonergan postulated that the Platonic categories of the good, moral principles and such, were also discovered upon the occasion of experience. Lonergan uses Hegel as metaphor and shows how higher human awareness leads to philanthropic principles of morality. Lonergan exploits Kant's loophole and turns Kant on his head. It is well done. But, I find a stronger ground for morality in Matthew 22: 34-40. For, if we loved God and Man, we would not lie, cheat, steal, commit adultry, murder, and so on. For this reason, love is the fulfillment of the law. The law reduces to love. The Jews, who practiced revenge via "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" couldn't grasp this, and so observed the letter of the law ("thou shalt not...") but not the spirit of the law ("love God and your neighbor). That is why Paul says, in 1 Cor. 13:1-13, of faith, hope and love, Love is the greatest. Morality should be grounded in the first two commandments, not on some abstract epistemological argument. In love is the unity of all morality and the basis for all morality. Lonergan's philosophy blinded him theologically.

This classic book in epistemology by a leading scholastic examines the process of forming concepts from a subjective point of view in the long tradition of philosophy descending from Aristotle and others and continued by Catholic thought. This school does not utilize experimental data and does not offer neuron models. Accepting inner experience as prime scientific data, Lonergan examines the process of forming an understanding through its perceived specific instances. You will be led to an understanding of understanding, if you will, and only if you will.

This book is focused about three levels of study on human understanding: First Level. Cognitional Activity: What do I do when I meet knowledge? Second Level. Epystemology: Why that, what I do, when I say I know, is knowledge? Third Level. Metaphysics: What do I know when knowing? This is an oustanding book and analysis. I've read it for 5 times and still I am enjoiyng it. This book opens your mind in order to understand yourself and keep learning.

Lessons from the Real Owners of the Planet!

Gilbert Waldbauer has written several entertaining and informative books on insects, but "Insights from Insects: What Bad Bugs Can Teach Us" may well be his best, both from the importance of the subject and because of the clarity with which he expounds it. Insects have always fascinated me and Waldbauer explains why we all should at least pay attention to these real owners (along with worms, microorganisms and plants) of planet earth.
Starting with the most dangerous insects on earth- mosquitoes (malaria kills about a million people a year worldwide and is now re-invading the United States, and it is just one of the diseases that mosquitoes vector) - and going on through the house fly, the "fruit fly" (used in laboratory genetics studies), aphids, the tsetse fly, the bagworm, the black swallowtail (a pest of carrots and relatives), the cabbage white, the corn earworm, the gypsy moth, the grape phylloxera, and several others, ending with the screwworm fly, Waldbauer explains the trials and successes of human attempts to tame "bad bugs." From the failures and environmental disasters of DDT and other chlorinated hydrocarbons to the success of sterile male release for screwworm and the successes and failures of biocontrol, scientists have learned a great deal about the insect world, natural selection, genetics and protecting our crops and our health and the health of our domestic animals. Waldbauer covers each of his subjects in an entertaining and informative way, leaving you with the satisfaction of knowing an amazing amount about each of the insects discussed.
If you only have time for one book on economic insects, this would be it. I recommend it without reservation!

Waldbauer covers each of his subjects in an entertaining and informative way, leaving you with the satisfaction of knowing an amazing amount about each of the insects discussed.
If you only have time for one book on economic insects, this would be it. I recommend it without reservation!
