There are eight of us who have been reading this together and it's been so much fun. The author shares 32 short stories of golf then draws a spiritual parallel that we can incorporate into our lives. The humor surprised me and hooked me on Callaway's writing. Though the book has plenty of serious applications, the comedy is a welcome addition and kept me reading. I've just ordered more from the author to give away to friends and he's told me he has another golf book coming out called Golfing With the Master. Great great stuff.

Better than a Callaway driver, this Callaway book is sure to make you laugh yourself silly one moment, then wipe back tears of joy the next. Having never read this best-selling author before, I was surprised by the humor and deeply touched by the spiritual message of these 32 devotionals. ... He even responded with a hilarious email. If I had three thumbs, this book would get three thumbs up!

I bought this devotional, not expecting much from it. WOW, was I wrong. This is arguably the best devotional I've read. Phil is very down to earth and practical, you can easily see yourself in his daily thoughts. If you love God and love golf, this is a great pick-up. Each day has a simple nuget that will challenge you over and over, each time you read it.

Like the author, I love golf, but I've found many devotional books hyper-spiritual, unrealistic, and dry as dust. Until now. This book is simply the best devotional going. It combines humorous anecdotes with Biblical truth and is written by a real guy in a way that makes me want to take advice. I've just bought 2 copies, one for my husband and one for my son.

'The Book of Visual Basic 2005: .NET Insight for Classic VB Developers' by Matthew MacDonald is another fantastic book written by the busy author Matthew MacDonald. Presented in a very entertaining and fun format thanks to the No Starch line, this book will cover Visual Basic 2005 from top to bottom and show you why it's one of the most popular and easy languages to develop in. With ~500 pages of material and 14 chapters, this book doesn't skimp on any of the good stuff (plenty of whip cream and jimmies for everyone).

If you are a VB programmer and want to learn about how far it's come and why the .NET framework makes RAD ever more RAD than ever before, pick up this book, read it, and enjoy it.

Easy to read and even easier to recommend, this is a solid best buy.

This is definitely not a complete work on VB or .NET. It does serve as a good walkthrough of the features of .NET and their use through Visual Basic. So as long as you know what you are buying you will likely be pleased.

The writing is solid, and the graphics are used effectively. This is not one of the screenshot heavy tomes so often seen in the VB world.

The focus of this book is to take a traditional Visual Basic developer who is already experienced writing Visual Basic programs and use that as a base to move them to the .NET platform. One of the problems of the traditional Visual Basic program has been that it has its own way of doing things and is built on a platform that is different from other object-oriented languages such as C++ and Java. Of course this is not the only problem but if you program in more than one language then Visual Basic's dlls would often replace and create problems for the other language and vice-versa. The vision of .NET was to create a common language runtime with common classes that can be used for all languages. The problem is that this meant a complete rewrite of Visual Basic and many of the expressions used before no longer work. This need to relearn how to do so many things has slowed the adoption of the .NET framework for Visual Basic. This book comes to the rescue by providing a convenient learning pathway that starts with the familiar for the Visual Basic 6 programmer and moves them from there to the correct use of the .Net framework to accomplish the same goal. For the Visual Basic programmer making the move to the .NET platform The Book of Visual Basic 2005 is highly recommended.

Are you a Visual Basic 6 developer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Matthew MacDonald, has done an outstanding job of writing a book about Visual Basic 6 developers who want to shed some of their current habits and start learning more about how the .NET platform works and thinks.

MacDonald, begins by showing you why Microsoft decided to create a whole new framework for programming and what it threw in. Then, the author provides an overview of the design environment. Next, he looks at the .NET world, with an overview of language changes, an exploration of the class library, and an introduction to namespaces. The author also provides an overview of Windows Forms. He continues by showing you the basics of object-oriented development, the most modern and elegant way tosolve almost any programming problem. Then, the author explores VB 2005's object oriented features and advanced class construction techniques including interfaces nd inheritance, the most anticipated Visual enhancement ever. Next, he shows you how to make your own components and get the essentials you need to know in order to transfer your applications to other computers. The author also describes debugging in the IDE, outlines some tips for making bug-resistant code, and introduces structured exception handling. He continues by showing you how to deal with Data: Files, Printing and XML. Then, the author presents an overview of databases and ADO.NET. Next, he provides some advice about when to create threads and how to use them safely. The author also describes the basics of ASP.NET, Microsoft's all-in-one solution for creating web-based applications. He continues by showing you how to create web services and, best of all, let .NET take care of all the plumbing. Finally, he shows you how to deploy your application: the streamlined web-based ClickOnce model, and the more comprehensive Visual Studio setup project.

Throughout this most excellent book, the author strives to give you the essential facts and insights. More importantly, the emphasis here isn't on becoming a "language nerd," but on gaining the insights you'll need in order to understand .NET development and to continue learning on your own.

If you've ever asked--or been asked--for a "just give me a number" estimate, this book is for you. It is simply one of the most important texts for Decision Support you can find. This book and supplementary software is an excellent value and a must-have for Program Managers, Project Managers, and Parametricians. Dr. Savage presents a wonderful way to learn a nontrivial subject by integrating concepts into simple learn-by-doing exercises that you can execute in MS Excel (with the included software ad-in). In terms of application, this book is virtually unlimited. If you need to make sound, objective, business-critical decisions, this book will provide you with the tools to do just that. Highly Recommended

Dr. Savage, a second generation statistician and consulting professor at Stanford University, provides a practical and hands-on introduction to analytical decision making. The book is jam-packed with sound theory presented in an easy to read format. The methods presented use the familiar language of Microsoft Excel to crack complicated problems with relative ease! This book & accompanying software helped me better understand 6-years of advanced engineering and business training. Recommended as an excellent resource for researchers, practioners, and educators alike.

I bought this book in 2003 and have learned a lot from it since then. This is not just a book, but a whole decision support system. For starters, just the software on the CD would more than justify the package price. The accompanying Monte Carlo software XLSim (an Excel add-in) is good enough for real applications - it will make you think twice before buying a premium competitor at a much higher price.

According to his website, author and Professor Sam Savage discovered that an Algebraic Curtain separated the bulk of his management students from management science. Prof. Savage has successfully dedicated much effort to removing that curtain. He has extensively used Excel, Monte Carlo, and resampling techniques to that effect. This book is an outstanding example of his work.

What is really great about this book is that it teaches you potentially complicated techniques through simple and straightforward examples that you can replicate using only Excel and the software included in the CD.

The 8 book chapters cover spreadsheet modeling in general, random variables, Monte Carlo simulation, queuing theory, discrete event simulation, Markov chains, forecasting (exponential smoothing, trends, and seasonality), decision trees, linear programming (including the Excel Solver), stochastic and non-linear optimization - all with clear and simple examples in a single book.

The author's writing style is informal, easy to read and sometimes even funny. A great learning (and teaching) resource. Highly recommended.

In his book, Decision Making with Insight, Dr. Savage really does lift the algegraic cloud that hinders the learning of management science and modeling. I second the above remark, I wish I had this type of text when I was in MBA school. The examples are truely enlightening.

I wish we had this book at Wharton. This is an excellent book on Monte Carlo modeling and optimization, among other things. You just can't beat the value of the book + software, and I personally like XLSim better than Crystal Ball because it gives you the EXACT SAME result, but in a much faster time frame and with far less complicated programming. Dr. Savage teaches you while you do the examples in the book. It is truly a great way to learn a complex, but very rewarding subject. You'll never do an IRR or NPV proforma analysis in the same way again.

Several copies of this book should be in every Christian's library for lending out

This volume has very good coverage of the basics that are present in many martial arts. It's a good read with a lot of technical information about stances as well as why things are done the way they are done.

Physical Introduction to American Kenpo
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-21
Ed Parker introduces the literal foundation of American Kenpo with this volume, the second in a series of five. Parker revolutionized "traditional" martial arts by trying to explain them via a developed scientific method. In his introduction, Parker states:

"Breaking the bonds of tradition has truly enriched my understanding of Martial Arts. It has given me insight that others have not been able to perceive." (page 2)

This volume contains Ed Parker's continuation of the history of American Kenpo, which discusses the further development of the tournament scene, martial arts in Hollywood, and especially the expansion of tournament karate in the United States. The rest of the book focuses upon the importance of physical preparedness, including explanations of how muscled work, agility, etc. and a section on warm ups.

This is followed by a detailed explanation of basics, how they are learned, applied, and may be arranged for application. Parker introduces here several American Kenpo theories which he completely explains--including the two "rearrangement concepts" (Numerical and alphabetical).

Also included is one of the most complete treatises I've ever read on stances. Along with the variety of named stances comes instruction on how to properly find your distancing and correct your own posture. This is followed by a section called "Maneuvers", which details every manner of closing, evasive effort, or locomotion one might consider during exercise or an attack. I can't think of a more basic foundation than stance and movement, or a better written treatment on these specific subjects. Parker has been very thorough and considerate in his treatment of the material. Chapters include:

*Acknowledgements/Dedication/Creed/About the Creed/Preface
1. Introduction
2. History of American Kenpo (continued from Volume 1): Ed Parker's Kenpo Association
3. Physical Preparedness
4. Basics
5. Division of the Basics (Organizational chart on basics)
6. Stances (Org. Chart, Attention Stance, Horse Stance, Bow & Arrow Stance, kneel stance, twist stance, cat stance, one leg stance)
7. Maneuvers (org. chart, org. chart on foot maneuvers, foot maneuvers, org. chart on body maneuvers, body maneuvers
8. Conclusion (Don't Quit)
Glossary of Terminology

There are a few mistakes scattered here and there, for instance application of the Numerical rearrangement concept is said to be demonstrated on page 37 when it is acttually 39...little technical mstake that wouldn't confuse anyone actualy reading the book through from the start. Again my peeve with this series: no index. Small faults for such a detailed offering which is obviously the product of so much time, effort, and serious thought.

Ed's writing reflects his powerful and gracious persona. Gifted in martial arts, he was also one hell of a ukulele player and teacher, as I learned when he and I lived across the hall from each other as freshmen at Brigham Young University during the first term of the academic year 1950-51. His uke playing, like his fighting, was super-quick, but he was slow to show impatience in teaching. This calm, Hawaiian style shows in his spiritual approach to martial arts. You will enjoy this book whether or not your main interest is martial arts. Read it to appreciate the approach of a master teacher at work. Ed was so effective in teaching that he taught me what I hadn't known was possible: playing solos on such a tiny instrument. Though I'm primarily Caucasian, Ed taught me well enough to impress a beautiful Hawaiian girl, a professional hula dancer who became my wife.

This book will give you the flavor of the man and his mission. I last saw him in the late '60s in the Washington DC area, where he was MCing a big martial arts event at which Bruce Lee performed an impressive exhibition. Ed was still the same classy, unpretentious and quietly helpful guy, even though he was world famous by then. Please do yourself the favor of reading this book. Though he died December 15, 1990, his ideas are still fresh and important.

An excellent resource for beginners, and advanced students.

This book was absolutely refreshing. To see an author write with simplicity and clarity was a joy. Dr. Bingle's ability to relate in understandable terms the pitfalls that many people face on a daily basis provided great insight into my personal shortcomings. Often times I heard Christians blaming the devil for their problems and in reality, they should have been looking into the mirror for their problem.

This book brings a spiritual reality to the arena of personal responsibility. Each person must be responsible for their actions and quit looking for an easy excuse for improper behaviors.

Thank you Dr. Bingle for your tremendous insights. My prayer would be that many would read this book and grow from the truths that are revealed.

Dr. Bertman's "Facing Death"  has helped me and my clients.  A new favorite, I refer to it often. As a therapist, I find it to be the most valuable relevent addition to my library.   Loaded with tools and comforting observations made by children and  adults of many walks of life, we're shown the relevance of the grieving process to us all regardless of our ethnic background, sosioeconomic status, or age.  I share these quotations and observations with my clients.

As an individual,  trying to make sence of my own grieving process, I find  the book to be a refreshing  sorce of  emotional comfort. It's full of theraputic gifts.  Were I currently teaching I would insist my students read this book.

Bertman has done an excellant job of jam packing a book full of paintings, sculpture, line art, cartoons and diagrams on the subject of death. Thoough her focus is mostly on dying the images are relevant, as well, in exploring mortality in general. Bertman has not made the mistake of making her work too theoretical or logocentric. She offers advice for creating art related to dying as well as advice on interpreting such art.
This book serves well in a death education course,or for the art therapist working in a hospice or similar setting as well as individuals who wish to explore ideas on death that are manifested in art.

Facing Death is an extraordinary resource for health care professionals and teachers, religious leaders, and for anyone either contemplating death in the abstract or facing it personally or as a friend or relative of someone with a fatal illness. It is an exquisite and empathic blend of reflect, review, verbal and visual images, and practical suggestions. It contains poignant quotes from poets, novelists, and families; powerful photographs of the interactions of family members with a dying grandparent; drawings by students asked to depict their feelings about death; and photographs of great and powerful works of visual art. The author uses the arts as stimuli to help patients and students acknowledge and explore their own feelings and behaviors. This book is enormously useful to me as a mortal middle-aged human being, as a physician caring for patients, and as a teacher.

Four Friends Find Fun entertains and educates the young and the old. I love to give this book as a gift. My children's friends love it, educators and daycare providers love it. I appreciate being able to have an intelligient conversation with my 10-year old on the different characteristics of people and how we can all get along better. I know that she now has an appreciation and an understanding of the differences we are all blessed with.

This is a cute book that will help parents and teachers educate their children about personality styles. It will also give children the mindset to be tolerant towards those different from them.

It's a great tool for schools and various organizations. I've already reccomended it to a few places myself.

Don't let this one get away!

Whether we like it or not-in this ever-shrinking world-we are all members of a global society. Now, more than ever, we must teach our children to understand and accept the differences in others, for it is one of the world's greatest challenges.

Where does a teacher or parent start to teach children this critical life skill? Well, you can start right here! I spent most of my life as an educator and an education consultant. I know this: If you put the right tool in the right hands, you'll get the job done. Four Friends Find Fun is an excellent educational tool. It's simple and very attractive, and it tells a story the way kids like it told.

I highly recommend it to teachers and parents. It can be used as a starting point that will lead to some very interesting and impacting teaching interactions with your kids. Don't let this one get away. A well done to the authors!

As the father of four children and one on the way I must say that I am deeply impressed with the simple brilliance of this book. I have long been a supporter of the DISC model for teaching and understanding others, but this book does so much more. If I had known as a young man the lessons taught in this book I would have been so much more successful at working with others. I would have had the ability to develop relationships based on mutual respect and appreciation for the unique qualities that make up each of us.

My children loved the book and laughed while they learned. They quickly identified themselves and their siblings based on the personality types. They can now easily identify the personality types of others. Surely, understanding these concepts at such a young age gives them an advantage in everything they do going forward.

Vera and Dr. Rohm, thank you for taking the time to create such a wonderful tool. This will help both children and adults communicate more effectively with others...GREAT JOB!

This incredible book help me understand my High I child and why she had trouble interacting with her High C teacher. I shared the book with the teacher and I have seen dramatic improvements in my child's performance and attitude about school.

I strongly reccomend this book to anyone who would like to better understand their children and help them understand themselves.

Osho talks in plain clear words. There is no confusion here. No pretention, no complications. There are no theories, no convoluted rationalizations. Its just common sense talk. Sometimes we forget how to think in simple terms about our own free will. I highly recommend this book.

Change your life and change the world.

I think that the value in this book lies in the deviation of thought from anything mainstream. Even though you might not agree with everything or anything in this book, Osho guides you through a world of thought that many of us had not even heard of. It frees you from a way of thinking that we are used to every single day. A good book to pick up and gain perspective when the problems pile up one after another. You will gain a new way of looking at freedom and a new way to define freedom. And althought I doubt that I, or most other people that will pick up this book, will alter their lives significantly, there are many words of wisdon to pick up. Afterall, all that we need sometimes is a breath of fresh air.
