If you work with, or want to work with, the Faery beings, this lovely oracle deck can help bring you into contact with the Faery realms. It can be used as a meditative tool, as keys for connecting with certain Faery, or even contacting your Faery contacts who help you within the Other Realms. One thing I love is that the writer of the book and the artist push you to develop your own relationship with the Fey rather than rely soley on the book for interrpretations which is as it should be!

I originally purchased these cards for a friend (on a whim) but when I saw them I was so enchanted by them I kept them for myself! (I'll order another set for the friend.) Their energy is delightful, intense, and a welcome change from the standard tarot deck. I like that the accompanying book is a hard-back and have found it a very useful guide to the cards. Users/collectors of tarot or other oracle-type cards should definitely give these a try.

this oracle has a really good, detailed first part, where in the authors explain everything you need to know not only about getting started with this deck but also everything you need to know about starting to contact the inhabitants of Faery. playful but serious at the same time.
My interest in this sort of thing is pretty casual, but...

I had a few hours of spare time at a friend's house, so I took this whole thing for a test drive. It was really cool! The cards are gorgeous, (looks like some people haven't been receiving them when they bought the book used though, so watch out if you buy it on here) very charming and lots of fun to look at and read about, and the first few steps for 'reading' with them are easy and fun too.
The steps have more to do with your own thoughts and feelings than with pre-constructed definitions, but they're also well structured and well thought out. The writing style in the book is lighthearted and a bit funny, so it's great to read when you're bored.
I sort of stopped at the part where it required the reader to sing and dance, but I'm sure that would have been a good sort of spacey bit of fun had I been alone. But if I have the chance, I'll probably pick up where I left off. :D

If you had to choose just one book to read on how to (and why for that matter) practice mindfulness meditation, this would be the one. Certainly read others, but start with and keep coming back to this book.

I havent finished the book yet but I feel if I practice the teachings of meditation as offered by the author it will lead to a much more aware and focused life. I really enjoy the way Joseph Goldstein writes and how honest he is about what to expect. So far I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

This was the first book on Buddhism I ever read, but it wasn't an interest in Buddhism that led me to buy it. Rather, I was in search of a book on meditation. But there were so many too choose from. The only reason I chose Mindfulness in Plain English is because it didn't have the word "meditation" in the title. I was not disappointed by my choice. By the second time through it I realized the power and potential Buddhism and meditation practice and how they could lead to a more peaceful way of life.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about Buddhism in general and mindfulness meditation in particular.

This is one of the most enjoyable self-help books I have ever read!
Mindfulness meditation teaches us how to pay attention to our breathing as a tool to focus while we watch our thoughts without judgment or participation. We simply observe the birth, growth, and death of the short-lived thoughts and let them pass.
The objective is to realize the interconnectiveness of all things and appreciate life and our environment for what it is. We learn loving friendliness, compassion, appreciate joy, and equanimity. We learn to fill our hearts with loving thoughts and manifest those thoughts into positive actions through mindfullness.
I recommend this book for people who want to be free from fear, tension, anxiety, worry, and restlessness; want to overcome inevitable difficulties, problems, and failures in life; and want their lives filled with thoughts of loving friendliness, happiness, and peacefullness.
This book teaches you about a meditative system that brings wisdom, equanimity, and peace to our lives. I am glad I read it!

I found out about this book after going to B. Gunaratana's meditation center in West Virginia. Before then, I had been introduced to various meditation techniques and had gotten my hands on several meditation books. This one was by far the most simple, straight-forward, and easy to follow. It's incredible to think that the more simple a task is (mindfulness is deceptively "easy"), the more guidance we need. This book handles all of the tough spots that a beginning meditator faces and without Bhante G's kind, gentle, and wise advice, I would not have come as far as I have in my spiritual and mind growth. I've brought this book for many friends since: I think it is a beautiful gift to give someone and I will have it next to my meditation cushion for years to come. Highly recommended.

I first started reading The Daily Bible over 15 yeards ago and I continue to do so today. I can think of no better version to use as a daily bible. Being arranged chronologically, gives a better understanding of the history of God's dealing with mankind. In addition, reading the various writings in their historical context is a great aid to understanding why these inspired men wrote what they did. I keep several copies of The Daily Bible on hand and give them to those who I meet that are sincere students of God's word.

I purchased this Chronological Bible (NIV) several years ago based on the recommendation of a friend at church. I had tried several times reading through the Bible based on a reading schedule, but never completed the Bible until I received this easy to read chronological Bible.
Wow! It was life changing as I had never read through the Bible. This Bible gives a brief summary of what you'll be reading each day which is an excellent way to begin reading by reinforcing God's word. I've now read through it 3 times and each time, I learn new things about God and his son, Jesus Christ. If you've never read through the Bible, this is the best Bible as it puts the Bible in chronological order which makes so much sense! Enjoy. You won't regret this purchase. It will change your life.

This is a great Bible to read in one year. This is the first time I have read the Bible in a year and all the way through. I found that in reading THE Book this way, one could grasp God's message to us all, His plan's and why and how everyone fit's into HIS-STORY. I mean everyone who has lived, is living and will live. I "got" the whole picture of life in a wonderful, profound way reading this book. Mr Smith's insights were very thoughtful and helpful. Everyone should read this Bible. I am giving it as gifts for Christmas.

I always felt that the Bible was confusing and contradictory. Then my mother bought this Bible for me. It was one of the last things she gave me before her death, and one of the best presents she gave me. When you put things in chronological order, suddenly everything becomes clear. Things that seemed contradictory, because they were juxtaposed against other unrelated issues, are suddenly put in context where they make sense. All of a sudden, the Bible seems all of a piece: one story from beginning to end. It no longer seems like an unrelated jumble of Jewish culture, outdated laws, confusing prophesies overseen by a mysterious God. It becomes the story of how God redeems mankind from its own selfishness. It all fits together. You can suddenly see the plan and the love that runs through it all. If you really want to understand God, this is the Bible for you. Just don't take it along anywhere that you need to flip through to a specific reference, it'll drive you nuts.

All these books about Stand Up can not produce one good joke. Some of the techniques might come in handy when in front of an audience but laughter they will not bring. For that, one must be inspired and have a particular view of the world to attract people and share in a funny manner. Bought several books and fine and dandy to hear anecdotes and comedians in all kinds of situations but in the end, if you are really interested in pursuing Stand Up Comedy, a person must be willing to put themselves on the line. Attempt and fail, over and over, until one is recognized as a true comedian and has developed hers or his particular style of comedy. Taking an acting class might be beneficial for so many aspects of stand up comedy can be affected by theatrics. Kind of like wanting to play poker and become rich. You can read all the books you want but until you become one of the players you will not really know wether you are good enough or not. Practice makes perfect, theory does not accomplishes the same thing.

The first part of the book was very informative. It offers many tips and knowledge about stand-up comedy. They seem relevant to many types of comedy. I was worried when I saw all the reviews that it was just filler and they would be pointless. However, the author asks great questions. The interviews are a thrill to read. I could not put this book down and read it from start to finish in a couple days. I reccomend it to anyone interested in any kind of comedy or who want to be funnier.

Ajaye gives great insight to the aspiring comedian in this concise read. I have never been on stage but this book has helped tremendously in the writing process and my eventual presentation. The many interviews he conducts show a wide variety of approaches and thought processes. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone that is thinking of taking it to the stage.

The lone negative review is so off it's beyond belief. This is, in part, my defending a book which I found to be the most helpful of the 3 I own (the other two being Judy Carter's) and challenges the negative points in the bad review.
The author's introduction includes the information that he found law school disinteresting, which is a fact that cohesively brings him to his self-admitted bumpy first night at stand-up comedy. His analysis of comics was fresh information to me. I am relatively new to stand-up (one year) and never thought to specify what makes my comedic heros funny. This advice is tailored to the individual as a road to slowly find one's footing in this world of comedy, a full introduction.
The author does not simply state "tap into your own life experiences". What he does suggest is for the beginning comic to try and find their own voice, whatever that may be, i.e. what we are truly passionate about, as opposed to what we think we should write about. And he writes about this in great detail.
The "third eye" is explained in great detail. I was stumped when sitting down to my notebook to write jokes. I thought to myself "if only I could get to that 'zone' in which I'm on a roll with my friends, making them laugh". The author is urging the reader to expand on his/her own self-awareness as to when and why people respond to him with laughter, as well as asking them to stay aware to one's surroundings and environment. If you're funny or geared towards comedy, your original take on life will guide you, over time, to better writing. That's "third eye" in a nutshell. I'm not an author, nor an expert, but I feel compelled to offer just a tiny explanation of the in-depth book discussion so dismissed above on "third eye".
Lastly, I was at first concerned with the seemingly small portion of the book before the interviews. First of all, those pages offer so much more than previous, now dated books (i.e. Judy Carter) in less space; Secondly, the interviews are truly the most informative part of the book. Trust me. Most of the subjects are so humble and truthful about their beginnings. (I write most as there was one comic who I found egomaniacal, and that in its own way was informative about that world). Hearing their stories and different methods is priceless.
This book rocks.

Excellent looking book. Well organized information on the inside. Franklin Ajaye may not be a household name in stand up, but he's written a book that definitely makes him a household name in my life. I would one day like to make my living as a stand up comedian, and after much searching and perusing, I decided that out of the many books on stand up I would pick this one up first. The big selling point for me was all of the interviews. Once I saw all those names of comedians that I had watched for years I knew I had to read this book.
I have to say that this book was extremely encouraging. I consider myself a funny person, and judging by their reactions to me, I would say that my friends and coworkers think I'm funny as well. My big question was, "how do I turn being a funny person, which I think most people are, into a stand up career?" The first section of this book is a how to guide for doing exactly what I wanted to accomplish. I don't think an aspiring stand up could read this part of the book too much.
The interviews section contained the meat and potatoes that I was most looking forward too. I wasn't let down with any of these chapters, and Ajaye is a really good interviewer. The subjects of the interviews were a diverse group of stand ups and there is tons of methodical insight and stories from the road to be digested from each of them. Frequently, the comedian being interviewed will describe their style of writing and/or performing, and it will be a contrast to what Ajaye suggests beginners do in the beginning of this book. I like how this highlights that there is no formula for stand up, and it encourages one to be experimental and innovative in developing their own funny style.
The final section was also very helpful for someone in my position. It was a set of interviews with what I would call behind the scenes characters that are very important to a stand up comedian. What an entertaining read for aspiring comedians, people who want to be funnier, or just those who are fans of stand up comedy.

From the first page I couldn't believe that she was describing my daughter to a tee. All of the other information and books on Asperger's was so rigid that my daughter did not fit their ideal of Asperger's, yet she fit most of it. But, because of this book I could see my daughter completely. I am about to re-read it. It's a library book but I will be soon ordering my own copy and telling her therapist who have no clue about Asperger's about it as well.
We wouldn't have had a diagnosis if it weren't for this book

What an eye-opening experience it was for me to finally find an explaination to my son's behaviors! Wow, we would have been stuck with an AS child being treated for ADHD and still having no success in the social adjustments.
The first night we recieved our book, my husband and I stayed up half the night screeming, "Look at this . . . This is my son"! It set us on our way to see a specialist that knew something more than our family pediatrician did about this neurological complex.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, AND THANKS AGAIN!!!

This isn't a book, it is a "good deed" (no, make that GREAT deed). And even that isn't high enough praise. Page by page, we have found answers to dozens of questions that we have been asking, but previously finding no answers. We went to therapists, psychiatrists & psychologists, but until Barbara & Patricia came along with this book, our family was sinking fast.
We are buying additional copies to give to family members and for the staff where our kid goes to school.

My son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome two years ago. Of the 5-6 books devoted to Asperger's which I have read, this book is by far the BEST! It is very readable and easy for the layperson to understand and digest. Issues that were barely mentioned in other AS reference books were given time and space in the OASIS book.

It has everything a cozy should be:fun characters, interesting slueth, romance, a bit of psychic powers and a good mystery. I am more than halfway done with the book and love it so much I wanted to order all of the books in the series. I was very disappointed to find out that this is the only one in the Kindle format. I went to the authors website only to find that there was no contact information. It is a real shame because I was willing to buy all of the books.
This is a really fun and fast read. I think I know who did it but not sure. I love it when the author does not make it easy for the reader to figure out who done it, but gives clues. I hope more of this series becomes available in the kindle addition.

Of all the Psychic Eye books, Abby was better in this book than all the others. She was less tedious and annoying (nails-on-a-chalk-board annoying) in this installment. Story-line was only a little predictable in this one. Ms Laurie, could the books end without her needing to be rescued by a man? All-in-all it is a capable cozy mystery.
Great...until the ending...

This is the fourth book in the Psychic Eye series, but the first one that I have read in the series. I picked it up at Half Price Books where they did not have the first one in stock...
The main character is a professional psychic named Abby, and in this book she breaks up with her commitment-phobic FBI boyfriend and catches a plane to be a last-minute bridesmaid in her childhood best friend's wedding. When she arrives, she reconnects with the bride's brother Duffy, and although I don't like romance in mysteries, they make a great couple. Shortly after, she discovers through her spiritual "crew" that the missing bridesmaid is dead. She can tell by looking at a picture; the dead are always flat and lifeless. Then another bridemaid goes missing. The great thing about this book is how she goes back to where she grew up, the family that raised her -which is the bride's family - and and no one questions her psychic ability. The book is well written and pulls you into the story instantly. I was really enjoying the story until the end, where it prompty did an about-face and wrapped up very strangely. For example:
1. She breaks up with her ex after he asks for time apart on Valentines Day, gives her the worst gift ever - a phone with a gps locator and one year paid bill that he got for FREE with HIS new phone. Good riddance right?
2. After meeting a great guy who actually respects her, they become so close that after staying with him, she decides to move to Colorado where he lives - HOWEVER -in the last few pages of the book, she gets shot and accidently speed dials her ex who flies in to be with her in the hospital and they instantly get back together. She gets a dying vision of a girl and Duffy, who turns out to be her doctor in the hospital and decides they're meant to be. She leaves her new boyfriend, the family that raised her, and goes back to her old life with no friends, no family, and her old boyfriend.
Until page 262, I had decided to pick up the next book in the series, and most likely read the first three books as well. The ending was completely out of character with the rest of the book, ruined the story of her starting over a new life, and completely dismissed the chemistry she had with her new love interest. Almost as if another author had taken over and finished the story in a hurry for an upcoming deadline. VERY disappointing. I am done with this series. That said, the quality of story-telling is good enough for me to check out the authors NEW paranormal series Ghost Buster, starring another psychic named MJ.

Victoria Laurie knows how to pull you right into the story. Her powerful imagination, her control and use of words, and her deep understanding of events that are psychic makes reading her stories an edge-of-chair experience that feels like being on a roller coaster from the fast start to the faster finish. I really like her protagonist's personality and I am very fond of reading stories told in the first person. It creates the sense of sitting across the table from someone telling the story just to you.
I loved it !

Think about your daily physical exercise regimen. Now compare that to the mental exercise routine you use in your journey to become a life-long learner. Come up a little short? The Daily Drucker will help.
In my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit, "The Drucker Bucket" honors Peter Drucker, the father of modern management, who was welcomed to his heavenly home in 2005, just a few days shy of his 96th birthday. His seminal book, Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices, runs 839 pages. Here's the Drucker Bucket core competency:
"We are privileged to be leaders and managers and we steward that privilege by being lifelong learners and practitioners in the art of management. We don't just give lip service to management--we are disciplined students of great leadership and management thinkers like Peter Drucker, Ken Blanchard and others."
I encourage my clients to read at least one book by Peter Drucker every year. If you're in management, why would you not want to learn from the management guru? To dip your toe in the Drucker Bucket, read The Daily Drucker.
Bestselling author Bob Buford, who graciously wrote the foreword to my book, mentions Drucker in the foreword, "Peter always said, `The purpose of management is not to make the Church more businesslike, but more Church-like." Drucker was a gift to all of us. This is the perfect book.

This book offers excellent insight into Drucker's writings on business philosophy. For those who have never read Drucker at all, this book is a great starting point, as it encapsulates much of his writing into a single volume. The book is of particular value to anyone working in a service-related company, especially in a society where knowledge is one of the most powerful assets managers are required to protect and preserve.
An entry from January 7th reads: "Knowledge workers own the means of production...the organization needs them more than they need the organization..." The action point listed is, "Attract and retain the highest producing knowledge workers by treating them and their knowledge as the organization's most valuable assets."
The information provided in this book, when put into practice, will help any manager become more efficient and reflective about how her/his actions fit into the bigger picture. The foreword, by Jim Collins, author of Good to Great, is also very worth reading and gives a little-seen and inspirational glimpse of Drucker.

Every morning when you get to your office, you boot up your computer and you wait - conservatively - 2 minutes. During those 2 minutes, you should be reading that day's entry in the "Daily Drucker." Whether the Topic of the Month is "decision-making," "leadership" or "organizational behavior," Drucker's signature style will clear your head and give you a "swing thought" for the rest of the day. A daily dose of Drucker will remind you how you "should" run your business day, in order to be effective, rather than running things the way they really "are."
If you make his insights your own, you will learn about yourself and your organization. Eventually, you will reach your goals.
Unlike other books, this one does not contain a sustained argument, so it doesn't become dull. And, many of the quotes might be regarded as some of Drucker's most user-friendly. Plus, each quote is capped off with an "action item" by the editor, Maciarello, who does an admirable job in teasing out some of the implications of Drucker's writing.
P.S. This is the perfect gift to give an executive.

Breath by Breath is an outstanding and seamless synthesis of interventions and talks that Rosenberg held about the Buddhist sutra (i.e., text) on the 'awareness on breathing' during his thirty-year teaching experience at Vipassana retreats and courses. Rosenberg style is plain and direct and his personal anecdotes make this fundamental teaching even more vivid and present for both beginners and expert practitioners. Clear links to other relevant Buddhist teachings make this text a good introduction to the Dhamma (Theravada tradition), as well.
All things considered, one of best introductions to the matter, a book that sheds a contemporary and western perspective on an universal and antique wisdom by focussing more on the main concepts and underlying rationales of Buddhist mindfulness practice and breath awareness (and its consequences on any personal life) than on some particular technique or method.

mindfullness of the breath. and opener of many doors. larry quotes the buddha... "the summary of all my teaching is 'do not attach to me or mine'" really i guess larry has summed up half of all buddhism by quoting this therevadan approach. the emotional and psychic enlightenment side of buddhism.
there is very little on mahayanan 'philosophical' enlightenment, but i am incredibly grateful to this great teacher for quoting the buddha and for his introduction to mindfullness of the breath.
of those coming to this book, some will have realised that we only truly learn or know through experience. these people are seeking for genuine experience through meditation. mindulness of the breath will lead to other types of meditation, discovery of how to talk to or learn from spiritual beings, and ultimately how to talk to the perfection that everyone is and has within them through mastery of the unconscious mind. (learning how to harness stream of consciousness, imagination/visualisation etc etc). the kingdom of god is like a baby seed that becomes a little sapling and then and then on it grows. you will find that one thing leads to another, but ultimately to uncover who you are you will need to rely on yourself and not be confused by other people. every snow-flake is unique and has its own unique route to the earth/attainment. you are all snow-flakes, but you just dont see this yet, or do not have enough experience/conviction to know this.
as a digrssion... what is suchness? put in circular terms suchness is: As is ness, thusness. things just are, what is is what is. 'is' is is. this view is the ultimate 'relative' statement... it indicates that all truth is relative. everyone has their own truth. is it emptiness?, is it form? actually... no. it just is. this is the ultimate buddhist statement. that all knowledge is beyond conceptualising, beyond formulation. as is ness is just as things are. this is the water approach, which levels all theories. it is empty of knowledge in knowing much. suchness is the water of the moon. female womb, sometimes empty, sometimes full. rising and falling, rising and falling. bringing with it peace.
what is absolute truth? if you seek the truth you will find it. actually only true love is the absolute truth, if you do not know love, then you do not know God, however there are lesser, though objective truths. truth can be seen as what is... reality, taste and see. everything that 'is' has its roots in the one absolute truth, which is true love. the truth is love. love is the truth, and this should gear our entire understanding of reality. even 'this' has its roots in ineffable 'love'. in the christian faith, we believe that what we seek is what we find. if we seek relative truths in accordance with suchness then we shall find them... like-wise, if we seek absolute objective truth, eventually we will find perfect love. true love is the ultimate seed and root of all, of essence (existence/is) itself. love is the fire of the sun.
bringing with it warmth. the light of the sun, penetrates the darkness of the moon. rising and falling, rising and falling, a child is born.
the buddha realised that without the anchor of love, one becomes a nihilist... and you only need see their actions and crippled emotions to realise how unsatisfying nihilism is. (freedom of mind is not everything).
this is also why pragmatism is utterly unsatisfying. its ripped its heart out.
larry may have given more than he ever realises, this man is a true master.

The author has distilled into this very accessible text a trove of practical advice about how to find and land a good job. "Make the Right Career Move" is like having a career counselor on your bookshelf. It serves both as a handbook about developing a job search strategy and as a reference guide about how to implement the plan. All job applicants would be well-advised to read the chapters on interviews (they are short) before every job interview. It will help them avoid making mistakes that would otherwise take them out of the running.

This book is a superb guide for making a career change. There are worksheets, guide lists for what to do (and what not to do), and the advice is solid and understandable.
Written in clear language, this book helped me enormously in a recent change. I found it especially helpful, as I am at the executive level, not at the bottom level. It provides web search assistance (where to look; what to look for), specific guidance on resume building, and even a glossary of words that are more direct and action-oriented than what I might have used otherwise.
No book is going to get a job for you; but this one helps you understand that a search well thought out is a search well done.

When Dan Shapiro was 21 he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that automatically changed his life and left him with the typical battles of chemotherapy, surgery and all its side effects. Yet being the son of delightful, highly energetic and incredibly optimistic parents helped him battle the odds and exceed the life expectations the doctors set for him. The title of the book comes from his mother actually growing marijuana to help with the anorexia and nausea that his chemo sessions left him with. Though not a drug advocate, mom is an expert gardner and grows bushes of cannibus that would make any drug user happy for the rest of his life. His parents help is always to the extreme and its hilarious the measures they take to ensure that their son's cancer not take over his life.
The other wonderful part of this story is just the progression that he makes with each chapter- finding love, graduating medical school, buying a house, and of course beating the disease. Shapiro is warm, compassionate, yet downright hilarious. I couldn't help but read outloud some of the passages to my boyfriend such as when his parents decide he should donate his sperm, or when his mom tells his new girlfriend that they have pot drying in their attic. This book is just wonderful. You will have no problem enjoying it.

My 19 year old son is going through cancer treatment, and by chance a friend loaned me this book. It is a wonderful reference for anyone who has a young relative going through cancer treatment.
Read it or you'll miss out on this jewel.

I picked this book up in the biography section of my library.
I was about to have my knee operated on and wondered if I could find a good book to read during the days in bed not moving. Well, I was moved by this book.
It is one of the best books I have ever read.
You almost feel like you know Dan through his setbacks and triumphs.
You'll laugh. You'll cry. You will fall in love with this wonderful book.

You might think that the title of my review refers to this man's life changing experience, but in fact I'm speaking of the life changing experience that has been reading this book. Dan Shapiro truly is a brilliant man and he wrote a complex, insightful book. I think the title is misleading, but the story more than makes up for it. It's almost as if the book is interactive; it makes you think back about many things, and can be very humorous at times. When he said he knew his daughter wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for his mother's talking to a stranger, it took me a while to realize he was talking about the woman in that first waiting room telling his mother to save sperm. I like that, that way that Daniel Shapiro has about writing this book. It was one of my favorite books, if not my favorite book, that I have ever read, and I would absolutely love to see a sequel of some sort. (This is the kind of book that once you're finished reading you feel like you've known the author all your life and you wish to meet him.)
