Dead Killer is Dead Cool

Review Date: 2007-06-23
I guess it is something inside of me. I have always loved zombie movies and more recently zombie books and graphic novels. I have read the adoring reviews of professional critics who sought out the deeply thoughful meanings behind Romeros various works: how we are supposed to root for the zombies because the humans are typically wretched, weak, greedy, and willing to cut each other's throats just to survive for a few moments longer. Despite my appreciation for all of that I guess I have always had a soft spot for humanity. Certainly, with some of the tales that have been written, it is far easier to wish that they would be ripped to pieces rather than survive, because there is little about them that gives them much appeal, but every once in a while it is nice to find a human being that still realizes that we are the superior race and that we are far more dangerous and lethal than a zombie ever could be.
Dead World: Dead Killer, explores this with the Dead Killer, who forces himself to be the perfect zombie killing machine. He goes so far as to focus all of his efforts on killing the King Zombie, one of a handful of intelligent zombies that rule all the others. He considers it a challenge and will not rest until the King is destroyed.
This, along wtih Dead World: Requiem for the World, are two titles that are fun and fascinating. I was interested in the humans as well as the zombies, unlike some of the other graphic novels out there. These works belong up there with The Walking Dead for the quality of the content.
Drawn in stark black and white, it almost seems like rough sketches in some places rather than finely detailed artistry, but that works for both the subject matter and story line.
Beyond zombies I have never been a huge comic book fan, but works like this certainly make the foray into this realm well worth it.

THE ORIGINAL ZOMBIE COMIC RETURNS!

Review Date: 2006-10-08
Deadworld has been one of my favorite independent comics ever since it first appeared some 20 years ago for several reasons. First, while zombies are all over the place to day in films, comics, books, etc, it wasn't the case 20 years ago when superhero comics truly dominated the scene. The second thing is that the comic was produced right here in Michigan by Arrow comics. In fact, the original artist, Vince Locke, lived in the same city as I did and when I published by first fanzine he was kind enough to be interviewed and even produced an original zombie illustration that I used as the first issue's cover. The stories in this collection are written by another fellow Michigander Gary Reed whom I've also known for 20 years.

This volume collects Deadworld Vol. 1 #19 - 21, Deadworld: To Kill a King # 1 - 3, Deadworld Vol. 2 #8. The collection focuses on the character of the Dead Killer, a mysterious angel of vengeance who hunts down zombies. Now the unique thing about Deadworld was that while most of the zombies were your typical mindless shamblers, there were a few rare ones that were intelligent, could speak and control the other zombies, in particular the punk-looking zombie known as King Zombie.

The Dead Killer has set his sights on killing all of the intelligent zombies but King Zombie in particular. An initial run in with the King and his pet, multi-armed monster almost proves disastrous for the Dead Killer as a bit to his hand means cutting off his own limb before the zombie plague kills him as well. He tracks the King and his underlings to an abandoned side show where the former freaks are now being kept as slaves for the amusement of King Zombie. The Dead Killer thinks he's found an ally with a human named Bowker but soon learns his only loyalty is his own self-preservation, even if that means betraying other humans. The Dead Killer will also discover a startling secret about the intelligent zombies that will make his task even more difficult.

"Dead Killer" works because Gary Reed is not just a writer but a storyteller, and storytelling is almost a lost art in comics today. While comic art is far better overall than it was 30 or even 20 years ago, the writing has only gotten worse outside of a handful of very talented writers. Deadworld never was strictly a gore-fest. It was always about the characters and their physical and emotional struggles to survive as it was about the horror all around them and Reed keeps up this tradition in his stories. My only minor disappointment would be with the art. While Ron McCain's art is solid it's simply not on a par with Vince Locke's. Locke had an incredible eye for detail and his zombies literally spilled their guts right off the page. Locke did, however, provide the lettering for the book.

I am truly thankful that Image Comics is not only re-printing this great Deadworld material, but recently started a new, regular Deadworld series, also written by Reed.

This book also covers some general design even if your not involved with Church Media.
Highly Recommended.

Jason Moore and Len Wilson do a great job of explaining how to create imagery for worship. unlike thier other books, that deal more with a theology of imagery in worship or the practical aspect of congregational expectations, this book is very much the get-in-and-get-your-hands-dirty book by creating imagery. This is thier attempt at the overview of art school for the novice and I believe it is successful. I find myself encouraged and motivated. Thank you Jason and Len.
I would recommend reading "Digital Storytellers" first for the doctrine and theology. It is good to mule these over first.

The book was a little pricey for my budget - but turned out to be well worth the expense! The range of school designs and locales provide great examples and were extremely helpful to me as I am working on a dissertation about school design. Finding up to date school design information - especially high performance school design, is quite difficult. This book made that so much easier. I also recommend the Prakash Nair Design Patterns for schools book.

An Excellent Resource for All Building Types

Good for architects and for clients.

1)Architects:
This book is an excellent resource for sustainable architecture in general in addition to sustainable school design. It looks at 40+ buildings from around the world and in various architectural styles, discussing natural lighting, innovative HVAC systems, rainwater capturing and re-use, siting, natural ventilation, solar heating and cooling and many other systems. The buildings range from a community built clay brick building in rural Africa to modern high design.
A great resource when designing your own project (house, school, whatever building type) in terms of brainstorming how to incorporate sustainable design systems. Also excellent for taking the next research step of comparing a variety of approaches to each individual system, and the book ends with a list of websites for further info. A valuable and inspiring find!

2) Clients:
A very helpful review of a wide variety of sustainable systems, it covers buildings of all budgets and styles. There is a list of the architects of each of the buildings, but the book can also be used for getting some useful background to help in working with an architect of your choosing.

Detroit's Gem

Review Date: 2007-07-10
Thank you authors, James Conway and David Jamroz, for putting together a wonderful book on a jewel in Detroit's history. Historic Fort Wayne was built in the early 1840's and saw troops going off to fight, from the Civil War in the 1860's through VietNam in the 1960's and all the wars in between. This book highlights the very beginnings of the fort's history (even before - a bit on the founding of Detroit starts the book off) and, through hundreds of photographs, moves us right up to the 21st century where this gem is now (very slowly - much too slowly) being restored.
My favorite pictures are from the Civil War - but there are quite a few from all the wars of the 19th and 20th centuries. And there is even a chapter on its restoration.
Detroit has a history of forgetting its history. I cannot tell you how many historic structures were torn down for one inane reason or another. In fact, it's still happening to this very day - plans to tear down the beautiful and classic structure of Tiger Stadium - built in 1912 - are being discussed as I write this.
But, that's the way Detroit is.
Unfortunately, Detroit has all but ignored Historic Fort Wayne (oh, the powers that be will throw a few pennies toward restoration here and there, but hardly enough to justify any acclamations). It's the Detroit Historical Society that is doing the real restoration work by having Civil War reenactors have mock battles and the such in order to raise money. Maybe some of the city fathers can give a little of their own cash (are you listening Mr. Illitch?) and bring this gem to where it should be. Folks, Historic Fort Wayne is a true ORIGINAL historical fort that just happens to be one of the few remaining structures Detroit has from the first half of the 19th century.

A glorious past, a troubled future

Review Date: 2006-11-25
Eighty years ago, the Freemasons of Detroit had a vision. They dreamed big and they built bigger, erecting the largest Masonic building in the world. Today, the Masons of Detroit seem to have lost their vision, or at least their ability to afford it. The Shriners and the Scottish Rite have both fled to the suburbs, and this magnificent building is in serious danger. A few individual lodges survive there.

Thankfully, the authors of this little volume have captured it on film before it is gone forever. The sheer scope of this 1000+ room building is incredible, and they have packed an enormous amount of history and detail into a brief telling of its glorious past.

If you are a Mason, it is worth trying to visit the Detroit Masonic Center soon. Unless a developer with as much vision as the Freemasons who first built it come to its rescue, it is in serious danger.

A tiny wish for some color shots of the more stunning rooms can be satisfied by hunting the Center's website.

I have glanced over Dales book and it is very informative. I have not yet read all of it, but I am going to now. I was a close friend to Dale and this book, and his others, is now going to become more valueable to me now. Sadly, Dale passed away this fall and it was a very sad time for me. I miss him very much, but every time I look at this book, it reminds me of what he liked to do and I am happy that he was able to see the day, when his hobby came into public view.

Normally I am NOT someone who reads about cemeteries! Therefore I was very pleasantly surprised that this book was so
interesting and well written. It kept my full (undivided) attention
throughout the entire book.

The style of writing used by Ms Hershenzon about the life and history of the persons buried at Woodmere provides an excellent doorway to the activities that lead up to our present time.

This book is entertaining enough to be enjoyable and yet factual enough to be used as a reference book.

I am hoping this author writes another book. I will make sure to keep my eyes open for her name.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Garie Thomas-Bass

Now, after reading this masterpiece of a work, I still don't know much about it, but I'm developing my very own imaging applications and making a lot of money -- in little time! Thanks Syd Logan!
