Backstage with Beth and Trina is a colorful, sexy adventure story about two rocker chicks who are determined to get backstage and, well, party with the band. But this book goes beyond the visual and ventures into the realm of scents. How does it transcend the normal confines of the picture book? By reaching back to the tomes of our youth. That's right: Backstage with Beth and Trina is a scratch-and-sniff adventure. But the scents in this book go way beyond strawberry and banana -- we're talking beer, cigarettes, leather and latex. Beth and Trina are rocker chicks, after all. This is the perfect book for that Rocker Chick friend of yours.

when i was a kid larry gilbert was mr. baseball in new orleans. everyone was really surprised when he left for nashville. the pelicans are featured in this book but also a lot of baseball history that i didn't remember, like shoeless joe jackson and the yankees in new orleans for spring training. but this for yourself, but get another one for your grandpa. he'll appreciate it.

Mr. Gisclair's romance with New Orleans baseball is clearly expressed in this book, with glimpses of amateur, intercollegiate, and professional outings to the city.

For my preference, I would have preferred Mr. Gisclair to have expanded the scope of the book to include all of Louisiana, rather than limiting to New Orleans. There is virtually no information on the old Sugarcane League, for example, a semi-pro league designed and sponsored mainly by oil companies, which competed throughout rural Louisiana and Texas from the 1920s to the 1950s.

In addition, a heavy emphasis lies on Tulane. While Tulane has understandably been a power in the last 20 years, there is less about the careers of UNO players, Loyola University's love-hate relationship with athletics, and other college traditions.

Perhaps the largest criticism is that the AAABA teams, which were long coached by the late Rags Scheuermann, are given only scant attention. Likewise, the city's contributions to the Negro Leagues are also covered only sporadically.

These are, however, piffling criticisms in what is clearly a well-researched labor of love, and any enthusiast should be interested in the book if only for the pictures and the bibliography.

Seeing all of the old New Orleans Pelicans brought back a lot of fond memories from my childhood! Larry Gilbert, Eddie Rose, Lou Berger, Al Milnar -- they're all there. I'm an old baseball fan, but I didn't know a lot of what was in the book. It packs a lot of history into a small space, but it's really more of a photo book. The captions are like little stories and are very interesting. Anyone who loves baseball will like this book.

I work at the ballpark where the Padres play, and I've met the author. When my family moved to San Diego in 1956, we just missed the closing of Lane Field, and saw Padres' games at Lane Field, San Diego/Jack Murphy/Qualcomm Stadium. Now we have Petco Park.

The book describes the rich history of baseball in San Diego, and price of the book is well worth my money.

I lived in San Diego from 1994 to 2004 and got to see many of the Padres' famous names, from Tony Gwynn and Ken Caminiti to Trevor Hoffman and Sean Burroughs. I saw the championship teams of 1996 and 1998, as well as Tony Gwynn's farewell and Dave Winfield's Hall of Fame induction. I even remember the old PCL Padres from the early 1960's and listened on the radio as the Padres won the 1984 National League pennant. This book is a treasure trove of reminders for those who remember the past as well as a good introduction to younger fans. And I will say this: the Padres and Padre fans do try to keep alive the memories of times gone by, constantly reminding us that there was good baseball in San Diego (especially with Ted Williams) before the major leagues came to town.

Of all the books I've seen with earring patterns, I think this is about the best. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the designs are quite unique. Even though it is marketed to a more advanced beader, I believe that a beginner could handle these designs and progress quite successfully through all the chapters.

After having a version of Photoshop Elements included with one of my digital SLRs, I thought it might be a good idea to learn how to use the program. I was surprised with all that can be done with this inexpensive program. The author carefully explains the tools and how to maximize their use. After reading this book, I am confident that I can make many of my corrections and manipulations in Elements and not have to rely on the pro versions of Photoshop. Photoshop Elements and this book is more than enough for most photographers.

I bought Elements 2.0, had Adobe's manual, and checked out 3 books from the library to learn how to use it--Teach Yourself Visually (Woolridge), Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 (Andrews) and this one. This is by far the easiest one to use to get started. At first I thought one of the other two books would be best, but this book, which initially I put aside as having too little information, is what I ended up starting APE2.0 with. It gives you just enough information on the different functions to get you started with the program in a logical order, with short explanations, brief but thorough instructions and visual samples so you can see the results and compare. I found the other 2 books from the library simply didn't go into the basics as well and the visual is simply confusing when you don't know what you're doing or what you're doing it with. The manual with the program--forget about it! Maybe once I'm comfortable with this book and have expanded a bit more with the others, maybe when I'm absolutely desperate for information I can't find anywhere else--maybe then I'll look at Adobe's manual.

If you're an absolute newby to Adobe Photoshop Elements, this is a great starter book. And I say this with some knowledge of Microsoft Photodraw 2000 and various other photofinishing software--I didn't start out a total novice. After just a couple days I am creating photo projects with Adobe that I never thought I could do with an inexpensive (compared to full grown Photoshop!) program.

Debra M. Cooper's book, Behind the Broken Image, captures what it is like to be entering the first stages of recovery from an eating disorder. With compassion, she tells the story of three eating disordered females- 2 teen girls and one adult woman. She also captures the reactions of the families-- their pain, anguish, and frustration at not being able to "fix" the people they love. Highly recommended.

An Inside Look at Anorexia, Bulemia, and Remuda Ranch

Review Date: 2008-02-27
If you want to gain a deeper insight into the complex and puzzling issue of anorexia and bulimia, you can hunt for a boring psychological text, or you could read this extremely engaging novel by someone who works for the world's premiere treatment center for eating disorders. This novel is gripping, fast paced, and extremely informational.

The author tracks three females, a little girl, a teenager, and a young socialite as they each struggle with an eating disorder. She does a masterful job of making these people so real it is as if you are invisible and standing in the room with them. It is clear that she has a great depth of experience. She explores how the eating disorders affect the patient as well as the rest of the family. There are no quick and easy answers, no platitudes, and one size does not fit all. Early in the book the author drops a bomb that will make your jaw drop--and will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can.

As a novel, this is an excellent read. It is extremely well written. But even more than that, it also shines in "fleshing out" the diseases of anorexia and bulimia in a very visceral way. You will feel the despair, the hopelessness, the anger, the joy, the elation, the darkness. That is true for family members as well as patients. This novel answered countless questions I had about anorexia, and it was so good I gave a copy to a pastor who has an anorexic relative. I also had my daughter, who is in nursing school, read it. (She then procured her own copy!)

There are some difficult parts of this book because the "fictional" cases are actually collages drawn from the experience of real patients. This is more than a novel. At times it will break your heart. Other times it explores the magnificence of the human spirit and God's ability to heal. But that is part of what makes it both realistic and educational. There is probably no better introduction to anorexia and bulimia than "Behind the Broken Image."

This is a fictional story about 3 cases at Remuda Ranch eating disorder center. My daughter has been there twice, so I had an interest in the subject. It was interesting, real, and insightful. Each person's experience is so different, but she did an excellent job developing each girl/woman. Having been to the ranch many times, it gave you a peek into life at Remuda.

An Excellent Pimer of the Christian Life

Review Date: 2005-04-01

I must congratulate Pastor Kyllo on this excellent introduction to Christian life and thought. Written with the "seeker" in mind (people interested but uncertain about and perhaps even suspect of "organized religion"), this book presents the basics of the faith in clear, non-technical language. He seeks to address some of the distrust issues that many in our culture have regarding the church and does it without condescending or over technical language.

This is a book that made me think, "I should have written this!" I must admit, however, that I am very glad Rev. Kyllo beat me to it, so to speak--he has done a wonderful job presenting a loving, accepting God. I plan to use this book in a variety of ways in our own congregation, form adult classes to handing it to those people who show up with their own questions about faith and religion. I think it will be an excellent discussion starter.

Invites the reader to explore Jesus

Review Date: 2005-03-09
In Being Human: The Image of The Serving God, Lutheran pastor Terry Kyllo invites the reader to explore Jesus' profound relation of the Serving God. A God utterly committed to loving and healing everyone and everything think in a contemporary world that seems intent upon inflicting damage to the hopes, aspirations, and spiritual lives of the Christian community. Very highly recommended reading for Christians of all denominations and traditions, Being Human offers a compelling vision of just what it really means to believe in Jesus in the context of the modern world. Pastor Kyllo maintains that we are made in the image of a loving God, and it is in serving God that we serve the world, as well as find purpose, meaning, and joy in our personal daily lives.

Can Christianity survive?

Review Date: 2004-10-17
As we go deeper into the 21st century, media christianity seems to dominate the civil discourse. A simplistic, fundamentalist "religion" that offers adherents a "ticket to heaven" in the Last Days while everyone else goes to hell.

This perspective is actively encouraged by the current resident of the White House, George Bush.

How refreshing it is to see an alternative view of God and the cosmos that brings us back to the teachings of Jesus as they were meant to be understood.

It was my privilege to be a member of Pastor Kyllo's Anacortes congregation. I learned that God is love, not punishment and retribution.

If you believe, as many do, that Christianity is in deep crisis, read this book to regain hope that God is still relevant and available to all. Not just the pious and sanctimonious.

Rabbi Steinsaltz tells the story here of twenty or more Biblical characters, from the well- known , Abraham , Yitzhak, Eve, Rachel, Leah, to lesser known such as Jehu and Ataliah. In doing so he relates the stories to the broader framework of the Jewish religious tradtion. The stories in themselves are of great interest but the deeper connections to the overall Jewish way of life and thought make this a specially valuable volume.

If you think you've seen it all in bible commentaries, read this book.
Every chapter will make you say, "I never thought of that."
While the book doesn't give any direct practical advice on problems of
our day, it does offer much theoretical insight. For example, most of
the chapters on "Genesis" offer insights on strong
relationships, and the chapters on "Kings" offer insghts on
effective leadership.

He brings to light biblical principals that now appear obvious after reading his book. I love his stories. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of God's true purpose in their lives and in their business. P.S. Be sure to get his first book, 'Money Came by the House the Other Day'. This first book will give you detailed information on how to get your personal finacial house in order.

It is a "heads up" approach to meaningless spending and materialism. This book doesn't tell you where to get a bandaid for your debt problem, but rather a heart transplant, performed by the Great Physician Himself. This is a "must have" for every family!

This book is extremely enjoyable and informative. Not only did I love seeing the history of Big Moose Lake through the wonderful collection of vintage picture post cards, but I couldn't resist comparing each picture to the corresponding snapshots I've taken over the years! It is truly amazing how little has changed geographically in this incredibly scenic area of New York State. Scheffler and Carey, however, also do a great job showing the reader how social factors -- like fashion and entertainment -- have changed in the Adirondacks in the past 100 years. A wonderful tour of photographs that transport the reader around the lake and through time.

This book will be near and dear to anyone who has visited Big Moose Lake or the Adirondacks.

For the ones who have visited the region before, the book provides a trip back in time and describes how the popular vacation spot got it's start. The best thing about the book and the lake is that not many things have changed since the early 1900's. When reading or just looking at the pictures, travelers are able to take a quick trip around the lake they love whenever they please.
