The topic of microarray image analysis has always been on the backburner. However, it is a very crucial step in the microarray experiment and image analysis is misunderstood by many colleagues. This book covers the basics of microarray image analysis, as well as some advanced topics. It is a really helpful reference. Good to include in class studies.

Good book, great value.

To my knowledge this is the first book to appear focusing on analysis of microarray images, though the topic is commonly addressed to some extent in general books on microarray technology. Because microarray technology evolves so quickly, books such as this one are almost of necessity put together in a hurry. Unfortunately, the hurry really shows in this case. In addition to the grammatical problems all too common in scientific texts, there are technical inconsistencies. For example, the term "signal to noise ratio" is defined at three places in the book, with three different definitions. First, we are told (chapter two, page 38) that the signal to noise ratio is defined as the ratio of mean signal to mean error. Later (chapter five, page 86), the signal to noise ratio is defined as signal (minus background), divided by the standard deviation of background. Finally (chapter six, page 101) tells us that the signal to noise ratio "can be estimated by computing the peak signal divided by the variation in the signal." Only that part of the discussion starting on page 86 is included in the index.

Chapter one provides an introduction to microarrays. Chapter two introduces image analysis with a focus on issues pertinent to micro array analysis, though it is not perfectly customized as background for the other chapters. For example, though Chapter two's appendixes include Fourier analysis, this is not really used explicitly further in the book. The next three chapters concern microarray scanning. They are each written by groups at different commercial firms, and they provide vendor oriented views. These chapters are redundant in the sense that they all cover the same topic, but taken as a whole, they provide some balance. It might be preferable to have an academic team write a single, more objective chapter, but it's understandable to take this approach in the interest of timeliness. Chapters six and seven are the ones that directly address image processing. Though Chapter seven is entitled "microarray data normalization", it really provides the most detailed information about image processing and analysis. Two short chapters cover a comparison of commercially available software and a brief overview of information workflow. The final chapter on bacterial artificial chromosomes is a general (and worthwhile) overview of that application, but it is not particularly focused on image analysis.

The book is concise (it took me about eight hours to read it cover to cover) and the price is right (under $30 at amazon.com). The editors and author are to be congratulated on producing a timely book, and I'm delighted that the publisher has made it so affordable. Keep up the good work.

DNA Array Image Analysis is the most comprehensive book that I have read, dealing with Microarray analysis topic. My background is in genomics, which is too far away from statistics. Nevertheless, this book gave me a very nice perspective on statistical approaches for microarrays. Recommend it to all, especially for those who are running microarray facilities.

DNA microarrays form an indispensable tool in molecular biology, allowing researchers to gain insight into the intricate mechanisms of gene expression. Microarray technology also aids the researcher in transforming and supplementing data available on genes and cells into useful information about gene expression, and ultimately, cellular biology.
cDNA arrays experiments use many gene-specific polynucleotides derived from the ends of RNA transcripts. These are arrayed on a single matrix and simultaneously probed with a fluorescently tagged cDNA representation of total RNA pools from test and reference cells. This allows one to determine the relative amount of transcript present in the pool by the type of fluorescent signal generated. Thus, the relative message abundance is based on a comparison of the test cell state to a reference cell state. Common to all array-based technologies is the need to analyze digital images of the scanned DNA array.
Shishir Shah is an Associate Professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, and is the author of numerous publications on image analysis and data mining, while Gerda Kamberova is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at Hofstra University, New York, where she teaches computer vision, computer graphics, and artificial intelligence. With this book, the authors address the fact that the topic of microarray image processing is usually neglected due to the availability of various software tools for image processing. The focus of microarray bioinformatics today is data analysis, but how can one be certain that the data obtained through image analysis of a microarray experiment through is of high quality? How can one perform data mining on data derived from different microarray technologies, where microarray images were analyzed with different image analysis softwares?
In Kamberova's introductory chapter, she describes the basics of image analysis for molecular biology researchers. Although some of the formulas in her chapter may seem intimidating to many biologists, they are necessary to fully understand the subject. However, the mathematical load in this book is concentrated in this chapter, and the text thereafter becomes very friendly, with more advanced discussions saved for an appendix.
Chapters on the design and performance of CCD and laser microarray scanners serve as a forum for three companies representing a good cross-section of the technology in the microarray arena. The book then moves on to spot finding and segmentation issues with tips for practical image analysis. Quality control of image analysis is discussed at the application level.
Elsewhere, Kamberova and Shah have invited a team from Fox Chase Cancer Center to discuss aspects of image background corrections and data normalization. Another interesting aspect of this publication is the inclusion of statistical comparison of data generated by various softwares. Finally, Shah's chapter on BAC arrays and image analysis is of particular interest because it is a new application gaining momentum in the microarray field.
This book emphasizes aspects of both theory and application and therefore, can be used for teaching as well as self-study. It will be a useful reference not only for computer and biology scientists, but also for anyone using or interested in microarray technology.

Anne Hier's book, Dog Shows Then and Now, is a brilliant compilation of articles about dog shows, the American Kennel Club, including illustrations and photographs, starting in the 19th century and moving forward to the present. It is done with knowledge, understanding and humor within a very artistic concept.

Considering all of the articles which have been written lately, and all of the TV coverage of the pure bred dog scene, it is amazing to find many of the situations described today have been prevalent for well over a hundred years. Even gender prejudice reared it's head the gentleman's sport. If anyone in or outside of the fancy thinks that the problems we face today are exclusive to our times, they have only to look through this beautiful book of articles written so long ago to realize that very little has changed in more than one hundred years. Many of the articles could have been written last week and would still be timely.

The illustrations and photographs have remarkable definition and are faithfully reproduced. For me they make the book museum quality.

Clearly, Anne Hier has an encyclopedic familiarity with her subject and has put it to wonderful use in this book.

Dog Shows Then and Now is a great addition to any serious fanciers library.

This is an absolutely fascinating read for the hardcore fancier - I couldn't really recommend it for someone only slightly interested in the history of exhibiting dogs. The author's questions for you during the read are intended to make you think; this is not a quick read, but I treated it as a textbook, and enjoyed it as such.

The Past as Prologue

Anne Hier has accomplished the near-impossible. She has brought together in a single volume images and writings from the early days of dog shows and woven them together into a seamless whole that provides the reader with a new appreciation for the sport of dogs. The vivid descriptions of some of the people who were pivotal in helping shape the modern dog show bring to life those times past.

The text interlaces excerpts of writings and pictures from old dog publications with Anne's commentaries. Changes that have occurred in dog shows since Victorian times are examined with the same critical eye that the author brings to judging dogs. Of particular interest are the "Questions for Consideration" that are posed for each topic. These are, as their name implies, questions that the serious dog person should think about, discuss, and consider from all perspectives. Indeed, they would make for lively discussion at meetings of dog clubs, or excellent topics for ongoing discussion (and probably even a little disputation) in dog club publications.

This book should be a fundamental resource for every serious dog person, and will also be a very informative and entertaining read even for 'pet' fanciers who never show their dogs. The sport of dogs owes the author a debt of gratitude for her meticulous research and her work in bringing such a wealth of material together in a single volume.

There has been a lot of misunderstanding about our dreams. This book cuts across all the myths and belifes that I had. There are some dreams that I have had and was so worried about but after reading this book, it broke all my fears and now I can sleep and not be afraid of my dreams or wonder what they meant. I would recommend EVERYONE to read it, even if you don't believe in God, because we all dream, no matter what our religious belifes are.

I got this book at the same time as I got Barry Thornton's Edge of Darkness. I found they were complementary is many ways. George Todd has been at this craft of making monochrome pictures for several decades, and his skill and picture and printmaking ability shine through. Mr Todd has got the picturemaker's trinity of 'tone, detail and texture' pretty much down pat, and the book gives us fine example after fine example of that. Wheras Mr Thornton in Edge of Darkness tells us as much about his heart and his head as about his superb pictures, George Todd has provided an extremely detailed account of each picture from before the shutter was tripped to when the print was ready to mount. There is something for everyone here - technicians, printmakers, photographers, and the house guest who simply browses a well produced book of outstanding images over a cup of coffee. They won't need to read one word - the pictures will speak to them. I like the book most of all because it showcases the ability of medium format so well. If the negative sizes were not detailed, I'm sure most would think these prints were from large format negatives. I'm glad I have it in my library.

If you are looking for a book to edify and encourage your spirit, this is the one to read. The authors, mighty men of God with hearts for intercession and revival, passionately decree that this is the time to seek Jesus through prayer, repentance, fasting and holiness. My heart and my soul long for Him even more after reading this book.

Let this be the hour that the church would arise, to be passionate for the things of God, that He may reveal His good pleasure. When we seek His face, He rewards us with His presence and sweetness. Nothing else satisifies but Jesus...NOTHING.

Indeed, Elijah's Revolution will strengthen your resolve to abide in Christ, fast, pray without ceasing and calling upon the Father to bring revival and His kingdom - NOW!

Letting the Fire Burn For Jesus!

Review Date: 2005-04-15
Jim Goll writes this book with an eye on the passion of the saint for their God. Goll is not writing to create fans or to sale books but to call the Church to be all that God created her to be. For far too long we have not responded to the cries of books, sermons, and teachings such as this and taken up our cross to follow Jesus (Luke 9:23-25).

I enjoyed Goll's book for several reasons. First, Goll is very open. He shares his heart. He is not trying to hide his own faults in the pages of a book but he is open in his own struggles for God. Secondly, the book is full of Scripture. While I didn't necessarily agree with Goll totally in all his uses of Scripture, Goll does offer many passages for the reader to "chew" on.

The negative side of this book is not too bad. Again, while I didn't agree with some aspects of Goll's book, I do feel that his message is one we need to hear. We need to be zealous for Jesus (Romans 12:11-12). We need passion for prayer (Acts 2:42; Eph. 6:18; Col. 4:2; 1 Thess. 5:17). We need a passion for the lost (Matt. 28:19-20; Mark 10:45; 16:15-16; Acts 1:8). And we need a passion to truly worship God (John 4:24; Php. 3:1-2).

Overall, this book is worth the purchase and the reading.

The details of encounters Michal Ann described in the first pages of the book are sketchy and left me feeling unfilled. She talks about how these angelic visitations transformed her life and her relationship with her husband, but I wasn't able to grasp what or how this took place. The book as a whole is very good and filled with information and experiences relative to the title, but for the most part Michal Ann focuses on telling her husband's story rather than her own.

This is a unique perspective, and shows graphically the why's as well as the what's of church history. Bill Hamon (correct spelling of the name) is a valid modern prophet. He writes the story of the Church of Jesus Christ (not a denomination but those who know Him) from the perspective of one who sees not only the past, but has glimpses into the future. Bill divides the history of the church into phases based on the restoration of the teachings of Christ that were lost to the church during the dark ages.

Do you enjoy a book that takes you on a journey? Are you interested as a Christian about our history as a church and what the future holds?
If you answer yes to these questions, "The Eternal Church"
is a must read for you.

The author, Dr. Bill Hamon is a respected prophetic voice to the Body of Christ, which adds to the creditability of the information he presents to the reader. Taking you on a journey of the church from the first century, through the Middle Ages to the present and beyond, you will understand what happened and may be more important, why, as Christ works to bring His church into maturity.
The book answered questions for me as a Christian and helped me to understand my history as a believer and gave a glimpse of where the Lord's church is going.

All in all, this is a very informative work, recommended for the Body of Christ, helping us to understand the works of the Lord, and the role we all play in bringing the drama to victory!

Everyone has experienced some kind of hurt or disappointment from our fathers. In some way, they didn't and couldn't meet all of the needs of our human soul. No father can do this perfectly. This book helps to bring light of where our own errors come in and affect other relationships in our lives. It provides steps to healing the woundedness of our spirit and helps us to come into a real relationship with God and freedom in our relationship with others.

This book clearly explain's Father God's love for each one of us. I am using this book (and the questions at the end of each chapter) for a small study group of men in my church. So often in our society, we desire balance in our lives, yet we are working harder on our careers than ever.

To be a balanced person, we must first know, then learn to experience God's love as a "father." While our society has maringalized the role of a father in a child's identity, the father's love and guidance is key to developing one's full potential. The love experienced (from God) allows one to take greater risks in following their dreams knowing that he or she is loved for who they are (a child of God) and not just what they do. Love experienced also allows one to say no to things that compete with experiencing God's love and thereby increase the time spent on relationships, dreams and fun.

This is an excellent book for anyone searching to fill that hole in your heart that cries out for unconditional love. Nothing can replace the need for Father-God's love in your life.

Jack has a way of painting a picture with His words and life experiences that draws you into the reality of Father God's love. I myself was stuck. I often wanted to know and "feel" the Daddy love I knew Jesus had with Abba Father, but somewhere I had walls of fear and doubt. I prayed that the Lord would breakthrough. That night I had a dream with Jack Frost in it. I didn't recognize his face, but I told others in the dream he was Jack Frost and that he had ministered the Father's love to me. When I awoke from the dream, I got on the internet and found this book. It was the breakthrough I longed for. I have since visited Shiloh Place (Jack's ministry) and received even further breakthroughs in really knowing and being secure in the Father's love. I highly recommend this book and the ministry to anyone who is perhaps afraid of God, afraid to be vulnerable in love, afraid to open oneself to experience comfort and kindness. I believe you will find keys that you have longed to hold and use in unlocking the walls of your heart. I did.

I have been so touched and transformed by this book "Experiencing The Father's Embrace by Jack Frost! This book contains alot of background of what kind of parents that we had. Jack explains that there is no perfect father except Father God. He explains that 80% of our indentity comes from our nature father because after all they were the one's that raised us up and thought us from right or wrong. Jack really gets into pin pointing fathers issues. I really like the remark that he mention that our Father cannot give out something they did not recieve theirself. Meaning that if they did not recieve love when they were small how can they produce the love to their children or know how to give it, if they have never expreince love theirself? This Book is Great and I Highly Recommend It! Jack's teachings on the Father's Love on CD and Tapes are the best I have found and the wealth of the teaching or un-describeable. He has the right name for his conference's "Encounter The Father's Embrase". His ministy is awesome!

In the age of digital cameras, printouts and projectors, almost everyone needs some introduction to color and color reproduction.

If you are a professional working in color reproduction, there are plenty of books on color engineering and computational color science - those by Phil Green et al, Stephen Westland, William Hunt are all good examples. But Maureen Stone's book has filled a long felt gap at a different level, where you need to understand the fundamentals thoroughly to get the best out of your everyday color reproduction equiptment - your computer monitor, color printer, your digital camera - what have you.

Three features of the book make it stand out: first, the selection of topics within its twelve chapters, second, the accuracy of the technical inforamation, and third the writing style. In fact, I am not sure if there is another book in the market on digital color at this level!

Ms Stone has selected just the right topics for providing a grounding in the issues of color reproduction. Her treatment of the Color Management Systems is probably one of the best at this level that I am familiar with. Color theory is complex. It is a hard-core science from one angle, an art from another angle, and an engineering discipline from yet another. The book has done a good job of summarizing the results precisely and explaining them accurately in a manner that almost anyone with interest in colors can understand.

The free-flowing writing style makes it easy to read - I finished reading through the book in about a week! And, now I keep going back to it off and on, just to confrim (or re-learn) my fundamentals.

The references and annotations to references are very useful.

This is the first book on colors for every computer user, digital camera user, color printer user and for graphics engineers.

An excellent and friendly introduction to digital color. In particular, the color images are well-done and helpful. This is the best book I've found for a general survey of the basic science and engineering of digital color devices. Those interested in research in these areas might also want the more advanced text, Digital Color Imaging Handbook, edited by Gaurav Sharma.

"A Field Guide to Digital Color" is an excellent introduction and reference for those who need to know more about color that "it exists" but who do not live and breathe GretagMacbeth color charts.

This book is wonderful for photographers of all levels who own Photoshop or a similar image editing program and are serious about editing their photos and getting things "just right". For amateurs, it serves as an excellent guide for gaining understanding of the key concepts related to how the eye sees color, color mixing systems (additive and subtractive), color matching, perceptive effects that humans eyes have when colors are placed near each other, scanning images, color spaces, printing images, matching color spaces.

Although the book is by no means the answer to specific questions you might have about your situation, it provides references for all of the materials used and you can research a particular subject you need to gain further knowledge of quite easily. It will also help you to develop the terminology necessary to ask the right questions of an expert.

I am an advanced photographer and work with computer graphics (OpenGL) and found this book to be very useful for providing an overview of the entire chain of color from seeing it with our eyes, capturing images, manipulating them on a computer, and then outputting them for our eyes again with a printer, monitor, or other output device.

The book has great pictures and captions. However, I bought it as a part of research and would have liked to see some facts with the captions. Other than that, it was great, I came from vallejo and feel proud that there's a strong filipino community from vallejo and that it's acknowledged in this book. I would recommend it to everyone who comes from vallejo and is Filipino. I would recommend it to history teachers. It's our history.

But it does show you the history of Filipinos in Vallejo. I'm proud to be a 2nd generation Filipino American living in this city. We will continue to cultivate and flourish because of our roots and culture.

Reading this book brought back a lot of fun memories of growing up in Vallejo in the '60's and '70's. Appreciate all the efforts that were put into this book.

I enjoyed looking thru this book and seeing my father & the "Manongs" of my childhood and learning of their roles in the history of Filipino's in Vallejo. It made me proud to be a descendent of these great men that set a foundation for the "Filipino Community of Vallejo."
