From our perspective today many of these paintings look very quaint, though when they were first published they must have appeared very futuristic. Buy this book for it's historical and art value, not for scientific accuracy.

An important book about organizational change and the five essential parts of any organization. From the information presented bReview Date: 2007-07-11
First we look at obvious ways things change - chaotic, planned, and undetected. Chaotic change occurs within organizations when, for example, there are security leaks or insider trading. Planned change happens in accordance with annual goals and when the Board of Directors are privy to the changes being planned. Undetected changes come about as a result "when an organization lacks a comprehensive strategic plan and, instead, relies on its managers (or "silo heads") to independently determine what is to be done and the changes that are to be made with their specific departments of divisions." The author asks you to envision the company you would like to manage and then compare it to reality - or the current company you work for or manage. Big difference! "Organizations today need to mobilize ALL THEIR MOVING PARTS to be in alignment and poised to effect frequent and successful change for the future."
"What are the moving parts of an organization?" People, departments or divisions, conveyances, materials - "specific, literal and tangible features of modern organizations. "The five moving parts are: The chief executive officer, his leadership team; the board of directors; its employees; and its customers." Blair provides examples of each and demonstrates what makes their success important lessons for us. "When a company pays equal and serious attention to all five of the essential elements - that is, those elements that comprise a company's leadership and management power, its policy power, its production and knowledge power, and its marketing power - it will own the future."
There are rules of management - " small things matter;" "chaos, even though unintended, should always be able to be controlled;" "all things eventually pass;" "dealing with chaos in organizations takes good planning and a high level of skill for the careful timing of mitigating actions;" "if you're going to institute change, you're going to institute chaos;" and "change is chaos. You can learn when to avoid it, or how to create it." These are important rules and, if we can recall them when things get hectic, are ones that will relieve the stress that comes from chaos.
There are helpful tips on how much you should share with staff, how clients/customers fit into the big picture, and the ingredients for success when it comes to making changes. Now that the moving parts have been identified and their importance explained, there is a chapter that deals with protecting the moving parts. It only makes sense that you would want to take care of something that's working. When the protected moving parts are in place and they are working, how does this translate into an organization? Blair explains this by looking at teamwork, leadership roles, what person or group is in charge of goals, and what "wholeness" means to an organization. Secret - wholeness translates to "success." And who doesn't want that?
This is an important book should you be opening a business, wanting to improve a business, or looking at working for an organization. From the information presented by Blair, you should be able to make the decisions that will take you in the direction you want to go.

I Want My Gay TV!Review Date: 2002-11-18
A Book I Was Waiting for Someone to WriteReview Date: 2001-07-13
The result is a singularly fascinating book, and a worthy companion to Vito Russo's The Celluloid Closet. And since television plays a more important role than movies in shaping public perceptions of gay people (and in helping young gay people to understand their places in the world), Capsuto's project is arguably even more important.
For gay readers over 40, this book is likely to produce some strong nostalgic feelings. Reading the author's accounts of such significant broadcasts as "That Certain Summer" (with Hal Holbrooke and Martin Sheen) or "A Question of Love" (with Gena Rowlands and Jane Alexander), one can't help but reflect on memories of a former self and how the world was then.
For younger readers, this book will fill an important gap in their cultural knowledge--what happened many years before Ellen and Will & Grace, "lesbian chic" and heightened gay visibility. It also tells the story of lesbian and gay media activism, of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and its forerunners. And Capsuto covers television and radio depictions of bisexual and transgendered people in his thorough account.
Perhaps most important, the book also helps to illuminate a continuing flaw in television depictions of gay life: for all the progress of the past decade, there continues to exist a kind of unwritten Hays Code that bars most expressions of affection or sexual desire between persons of the same sex from American network television.
Will & Grace continues to depict what may be the only attractive, witty, smart and successful gay man in Manhattan who has no sex life. In its own way, this show is as deficient today as was "The Andy Griffith Show" in depicting (during the height of the civil rights movement) the only town in North Carolina with no black people.
Television provides a crucial window through which we see our lives and our society. Capsuto's book helps us to remember how skewed that vision has often been, and to realize the important changes that are still needed. This is an important work of cultural and social history.

Another great book for the Space NutReview Date: 2005-11-12
The book opens with the typical NASA mission press kit. Unlike later Apollo mission press kits, this is quite long and very detailed, containing descriptions on everything from orbit and reentry profiles to the crew biographies. The next section contains both the pre- and post-flight operation reports which provide an enormous amount of information on the operation of the Saturn V, the Command Module, the Lunar Module and the rendezvous and docking methods.
The debrief section, which is about a third of the book, contains the crew comments and feelings about various parts of the mission and for the most part avoids the technical language that many of the NASA documents include, but it does contain many undefined acronyms. This section contains crew comments from the lift-off to the landings and discusses many of the technical aspects of the mission, such a telemetry, photography, communications, etc. Since the Apollo 10 mission was a dress rehearsal for the first landing mission, many of the questions and subsequent answer are related to rendezvous and docking in lunar orbit. I always like this section of these reports, because it provides an insight to the crew's feelings on the operation of the space vehicle and the mission in general.
The CD Rom that accompanies the book is divided into two sections. The first section contains two NASA produced movies called "To Sort Out the Unknowns" which focuses on the rendezvous and docking in lunar orbit and "Green Light for A Lunar Landing" highlights portions of the Apollo 10 mission interspersed with Apollo 11 training footage The final section contains hundreds of the mission photos taken by the crew.
Some general information that might be useful.
1) This report contains scanned-in documents from previously released NASA documents. In order to preserve the spirit of the original reports, all typographical and grammatical errors have NOT been fixed.
2) Proceeds from the book goes to "The Watch" an asteroid impact research project of the Space Frontier Foundation. In other words, Apogee Books is making very little off the sale of US government produced books and documents.
3) Many people have asked why the post mission science reports are not included. Since NASA has published several books with hundred of pages each, the NASA Special Publications Series, it would be difficult to include this voluminous amount of data.
4) Make sure you buy the second edition, because it contains more documentation in the text and more features on the enclosed CD.
Another valuable volume for the space enthusiastReview Date: 2002-02-01
Apollo 10 can aptly be called the full dress rehearsal for the moon landing. All that was skipped was the landing (and following activities) itself. The crew was one of the most experienced and distinguished in NASA history: Tom Stafford went on to command Apollo-Soyuz, John Young went on to command Apollo 16, the first shuttle mission, and to head up the astronaut office, and Gene Cernan went on to become the last man on the moon, on Apollo 17. And so far as I know, this mission and Apollo 11 are the only ones in NASA history to have all-experienced crews.
As usual, the text includes the pre-mission press and internal reports, and the post-mission summaries and crew debriefings. The accompanying CD contains hundreds of photos from the mission as well as the official NASA videos.
Another valuable volume for the space enthusiast.

Until the second half of the nineteenth century, these depictions of space vehicles, other worlds, and their possible inhabitants were wildly fanciful. After Jules Verne, improved astronomical observations and better engineering made these visions increasingly recognizable for those who grew up with the Space Age. The book, which includes photographs of early rocket experiments, ends with an extensive section on the 1950's, covering the ideas of Wernher von Braun and illustrated with paintings by Chesley Bonestell and Fred Freeman.
Readers may wonder why there are no visions from non-western cultures; were none sufficiently interesting, or do they really not exist? The foreword by Arthur C. Clarke is disappointingly flippant.
