I took so many notes in this book. I often review them when I feel like there is a disconnect between me and my clients. Once again Tom shows how important the human connection is along with doing business for your client vs how YOU want to do business. After reading this my business model has changed dramatically along with many happy repeat clients. So often we model our service business after how we like to do things. "That's how I do it" attitude. Along with myself, I've seen many other service businesses crash like this. Read this book and change your business for the better. 5 stars again for Asacker.

This book was great for me because it is structured as a conversation with two speakers making points and counterpoints- the book was like a conversation that might occur right in one of my company's meeting rooms, and for that reason I found it riveting, enjoyable-to-read, and applicable to real life business!

This book is definately a hidden gem for business owners large and small. Tom gets right to the point bypassing the marketing babble to give us his clear take on today's most powerful concept in business. One of the few marketing books out there which the author lays it all on the table and shares all his valuable and insightful marketing advice with his readers. It sure is refreshing to finally read a book on marketing with out all the fluff and BS. Check out Tom's blog as well. You'll be glad you did. Good stuff.

The Complete Wineskin has truly changed my life. I have realized now why I could never settle in a church and why I would get so upset about the way things were ran. I have an anointing on my life and this book has answered questions that I've had since childhood. I am excited about what God is doing within the body of Christ and more so that he has chosen me and others to lead the way for which I am honored. Anyone who has ever felt the pull of the Holy Spirit to do and be more than what they are I challenge you to read this book it IS life changing.

This book takes religion out of the church structure (As God intended it). Groups of beleivers meeting and organizing this way are having revival. God made it simple, men made it hard. Mr. Eberle brings common sense back to the church in a simple and easy to read format.

For years I have been concerned with the non-biblical traditions
that have pervaded the modern day church. The church has built
doctrine after doctrine on traditions created by men. This book
takes a fresh look at the church today and exposes the more
biblical structure that God has ordained for the church. It is a
challenge to read and accept the concepts that the author puts
forth. The biblical foundations of this book are real and appear to
be right on. This should be required reading for all church leaders.

Mary Shafer's "Devastation on the Delaware" is an engrossing account of the tragic Delaware Valley flood of 1955, created by Hurricanes Connie and Diane. Told as a narrative timeline of events, this book introduces us to the people and communities overcome by the wrathful waters of the Delaware and its tributaries. It reads like historical fiction rather than documentary, with many amazing and touching stories uncovered by the author's interviewing diligence. I couldn't put this book down and highly recommend it as a full and varied account of an unbelievable event and its effect on the Delaware Valley.

Shafer's book is an exceptional read.

Mary Shafer has approached a detailed account of a tragic flood with unusual thoroughness, compassion, continuity, and research. It is a non-fiction book like no other, holding the reader spellbound throughout. One cannot help but become emotionally involved with those who suffered through this event, and one cannot help but admire Shafer for her accomplishment. Obviously, Shafer was passionate about her subject; it shows in throughout this book.

An Amazing Account of the '55 Flood

Review Date: 2008-05-18
Mary Shafer's book Devastation on the Delaware is the amazing result of years of research and emotional commitment. Written to commemorate the August, 1955, Delaware River Valley Flood, the book takes the reader on a "roller-coaster ride" through those days of death and "devastation." Ms. Shafer describes in detail the Flood as experienced in all the areas of the Delaware Valley during August 18-20.

Her professional commitment to her "craft" and her personal commitment to the survivors and victims of the Flood are extraordinary. The survivors' stories (remembered in minute detail 50 years later) are heart-wrenching. The graphic details are horrifying.

The author is an exceptional writer, one who weaves historical and scientific facts into a compelling "story." The fascinating history of the Delaware River and its tributaries, general information about hurricanes (and Hurricanes Connie and Diane in particular) and the status of weather reporting in the mid-1950's and the abandoned plans to dam the River after the Flood all become part of the drama of one of our country's worst natural disasters. This book will hold everyone's interest. It is a great "read."

For those of us who lived through the Flood, it is also a priceless gift. Many people waited over 50 years for the kind of closure only Ms. Shafer's book has given them.

Although I was born after the flood, I visited all the high-water markers in my hometown in the Pocono Mountains and listened intently to the haunting stories told by teachers, neighbors, and family friends. I believe the author of this book has done a marvelous job recounting the days and hours leading up to the region's greatest disastser, mostly through the eyes of those who witnessed the terrible events of August 1955.

Director 8.5 is a monster application with huge range of functionality. Nyquist's "Bible" uses CD-ROM-based tutorials to carry you through the concepts with relative ease. The tutorials are part of one continuous complex project, taking the reader from the basics through media management, interactivity, project management and some pretty sophisticated Lingo programming. It is also organized to allow easy reference for specific issues. Having recently completed an 'Emedia & Design' programme I would have to say that Nyquist's book is probably the most valuable text in my library.

As many others have said, the content is great. The one drawback is the format. If if were published in a loose-leaf format that could be but in a three ring binder then it would be much easier to use. Rather than having to take the whole book, you could take just several pages with you as needed.

The Divine Hours was recommended in Philip Yancy's book, "Prayer". The daily readings are mostly from Scripture but has prayers from early Church Fathers and the Book of Common Prayer. After reading each day's prayers, praying became a joy instead of chore. I bought all three books!

A Prayerbook Trilogy for All Seasons

Review Date: 2007-11-03
As someone who has worked with a good number of prayer books over many years including the old Roman Breviary (in Latin), Phyllis Tickle has produced a true masterpiece through her trilogy. It is very "user-friendly" with all prayer materials appearing in tight sequence on each page, eliminating the need to flip all over a book searching for "what's next?" Thank you for making my life more simple, Ms. Tickle!! I now have more time for real prayer.
More importantly, the assigned prayers and reading selections for each day are very well chosen. They are all on the side of thoughtful brevity. This helps create that wonderful atmosphere prescribed by St. Benedict(father of western monasticism)who instructs "therefore prayer ought to be short and pure, except when it is occasionally prolonged by the inspiration of Divine Grace."

My go-to series for daily devotions

Review Date: 2008-02-13
Tickle has done a great service for everyone who practices daily devotions. Along with the "Prayers for Summertime" and "Prayers for Springtime," this book provides everything one needs to pray one or all of the Daily Offices (the night prayers of Matins, Laud, and Prime are contained in her "The Night Offices").

The book is broken into chapters by month, with daily Morning Prayer, Midday Prayer, and Vespers. Compline is the same from week to week within a given month, so Tickle provides the seven days of Compline readings at the back of each month. The Introduction also includes a history of the Divine Hours and some instruction in how the use the prayers. She encourages readers to chant or sing the psalms or prayers when appropriate, but affirms that silent reading, chanting, or singing is a matter of personal preferences.

Each day's Offices follow the structure of the Book of Common Prayer, although the old familiar Invitatories and Responses are replaced by other varied, often less-familiar, lines from Scripture. The readings are usually biblical, but may also be from Christian sources. All-in-all, each office takes only a few minutes to read to oneself, and is varied, accessible, and enjoyable. The book, itself, is easy to use (although a built-in bookmark or two would be great), the type is easy to read, and it's not so heavy I'm going to mind packing it for a trip (although it's not a small book, by any means).

I highly recommend this book and its companions for the Divine Office beginner or regular practitioner. Those new to daily prayer may also enjoy Brook's The School of Prayer: An Introduction to the Divine Office for All Christians.

Phyllis Tickle has done all of us a tremendous service by updating the traditional prayer book format. Her compilations (This is one of three seasonally targetted volumes) take the best of volumes like the Book of Common Prayer and instead of making the reader flip to four or five various sections for each prayer time -- she collects them all in order on one page. Genius!

I wish I could give a copy of The Soul of the Apostolate to every "social justice" priest and layperson that I know. And the same with the folks who run around making nice, pretty ministries but aren't spending time with the Lord. This book brought me back to GOD. Oh, to know that the author struggled much in the same way that I have. Oh, to know, that like many young folks, I was seeking my identity in various groups, both secular and spiritual. The truth is, my identity is as a child of GOD. This book gives me practical information on how to grow as a Christian. (and to put my "clubs" waaay below GOD, my marriage, etc) And the footnotes are also very helpful.

I highly recommend this book to ALL Christians seeking GOD. GOD BLESS!!!!

I, and many people who work in full time or part time ministry (i.e. some sort of apostolate), know the imortance of prayer. However, NO book I have come across articulates the need and inspires the reader to seek personal conversion FIRST than this book. It has truly changed my prayer life and my job (which is in Youth Ministry). It drives home the old saying "you can't give what you don't have". Buy the book, read it, and then read it again.

Even though this book was written more than half a century ago, the advice it gives to priests and those who serve God's people are still as valid today as they were then. Nowadays we're always busy doing, but we should surely stop to ask ourselves just what we are achieving. In this beautifully written work Dom Chautard lays out the necessity of a deep relationship with God in order that our work may truly have an impact on the world. He lays out guidelines that will help the reader lead a more reflective and therefore effective life.

This is a very useful book for anyone learning the program. Video editing, particularly titling and animation, can be detailed and laborious. The writer--an experienced editor--takes you through the process step-by-step in contrast to manuals that merely describe a program's functions.

The accompanying CD has hands-on lessons for every chapter, so the reader can actually experience what the writer describes. Invaluable. Final Cut, even the express version, offers many video capabilities for both amateur and professional. This book shortens the learning process and brings you up-to-speed quickly.

I've gotten each new edition of this book, even though there aren't a huge number of changes. It's just nice to see the updates he's made and draw from his rich knowledge and experience with Final Cut Pro/Final Cut Express/iMovie, and the new nuances he throws in with each edition.

You can already learn some key points to keep in mind about the latest version of FCE in the Excerpt from the front of the book available for viewing on Amazon. It's worth the price of the book right there!

Tom works so hard providing lucid and practical support on the Apple Support page for FCE, and no doubt uses that to enhance the next edition. You're going to be getting his free advice sooner or later, so you might as well throw a few bucks his way and give him some credit for all that you will benefit from his wisdom. I've bought several of the other FCE books over the years, but Tom is the best.

Embracing The Gospel

This book examines God's blessings and the ultimate gifts he bestows upon us through his son, Jesus Christ. Although the opening of the book talks about salvation and man's relationship with God, it ultimately leads to solving the question of what happens after one has been saved and starts to grow as a Christian.

There is a lot of scripture referenced in this book but it is laid out well in an organized manner and it all makes sense with the author's directive. I was only able to read about twenty pages a night then I would spend the next half hour or so reflecting and praying.

I would definitely recommend "Gifts of Freedom" to those who are searching for answers whether just newly reborn or having walked with Christ for some time. The author's gentle hand in conveying God's love for us is the essential message of hope we all need.

I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Finding Freedom by Embracing Life

Review Date: 2008-09-16
"Embracing Life, Spirit and Adversity" is the first book in the series "The Gifts of Freedom." Greg Rice writes with clarity, simplicity, and authority. He writes to "offer Christians a clear path toward living in wholehearted freedom" and to give a better understanding of the life changing gospel message.

Each chapter ends with a meditation point. I found this offered an ideal time to stop, take a minute and quietly reflect on the truths introduced in the chapter. This time spent in mediation became a natural progression for moving on to the suggested study questions included in the study guide in part two of the book. The study guide is designed to help the reader assimilate the main concepts of the study and to personalize and apply them to your life.

I also enjoyed the action and visualization instructions found throughout the book. Greg feels that when we understand and practice these instructions we will see long term behavioral changes in our life.

Greg identifies the primary concerns facing people today. He discusses financial worries, spiritual doubt, guilt, emotional stress and loneliness. He then goes on to show the reader how to receive the gift of life, what the Holy Spirit means to the Christian, the significance of faith, and lessons we can learn from adversity.

Greg Rice provides basic instruction in personal and spiritual growth in "Embracing Life, Spirit, Faith, and Adversity." The message is powerful and engaging. This is a Biblically sound book for new believers, seekers, or mature Christians. Rice provides an excellent combination narrative as well as thought provoking questions in the accompanying study guide.

Review Date: 2007-05-26
I've been looking forward to reading this book for years ever since I read Bunyan's classis Pilgrim's Progress, I've wanted to read Grace Abounding to learn more about his incredible man of faith. I also recently read The Hidden Smile of God by John Piper who introduces the reader to three incredible men of God including Bunyan. So actually reading the journey of Bunyan himself in his own words was thrilled...but difficult at the same time. Bunyan struggled greatly with the concept of grace; he wrestled with understanding how God's grace could be sufficient to save a sinner as great as he. Grace Abounding is a peering into the soul of Bunyan as he goes through this deep personal battle wanting to believe that God was able to cleanse him of all unrighteousness, but constantly confronted with the holiness of the divine.

Just over half way through the book, Bunyan surrenders to the will of God in his life. He finally and fully grasp that the grace of God was truly sufficient. Then his heart is set aflame to share this grace with others and he becomes one of the great preachers and writers of all time, even though he goes on to spend a dozen years confined to prison for preaching contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Personally, it was interesting to see the cultural battle Bunyan faced at the time looking back from my vantage 500 years later to see that America is the beneficiary of his great struggles with the prevailing church of the day. As Bunyan sat in prison, he wrote about the great journey from a metal worker to a pastor of the gospel of Christ - in allegory form for the Pilgrim's Progress and in autobiographical form in Grace Abounding.

I can understand why many believe this book is a classic - the thoughts and insights that Bunyan has into the Word of God were profound and significant. It was amazing to read how Scripture flowed through his mind irrigating every thought so that his life bore much fruit. I wouldn't recommend the book to a younger reader, it is a difficult read, but well worth the effort.

Recommended to anyone who may be facing the same struggle with this question. Each paragraph of the text is numbered and, thus, it is easy to put the book down at any point and pick it back up later without losing train of thought. Since the book was written over 300 years ago, it is interesting to have insight into the thoughts of a Christian who lived during that time and to compare with current Christian thinking.

There's hope for you too in God's Abounding Grace

A lot of us are familiar with John Bunyan as the author of The Pilgrim's Progress, whose influence in Christendom is second to the Bible. Bunyan was a preacher, a prolific writer and a shining saint for God. However when we read this book we find out that he was an atheist and infidel in his youth, enjoying sin and rebellious towards God. Inwardly he suffered from tormented nightmares of demons and judgment, but outwardly he went on pretty much as any other sinner, taking delight in sin and being the ringleader of mischief. Several times he nearly lost his life, and even though there were several close calls, still he did not turn to God. After his marriage, he participated in religious activities, went through the motions of attending church and generally lived as he pleased, each time successfully shrugging off pangs of guilt. One day, after church, while playing a sport, a voice seemed to call out to him from heaven to his soul, which said, "Wilt thou leave thy sins and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" Bunyan was convinced it was the Lord Jesus looking down on him in displeasure. What follows details his sinking into despair, his desparate attempts at working his way into God's good graces, and his struggles with temptation and doubt. In a strange sort of way, it is comforting to read about Bunyan's struggles and identify with them because you can see how he turned out so greatly used by God. He rationalized, made excuses and tried every way to justify himself. Bunyan did not try to gloss over his motivations but gave an honest account of his struggles from avowed sinner, to religious hypocrite before he was finally converted. He describes in great detail his doubts and despair, his yearning to be converted to Jesus Christ, and then being assured of his salvation by reading the Bible and praying. Reading this book will help you realize how God's grace can abound and save even the most wretched of sinners and gives us abounding hope.

I could scarcely imagine why this book turned up first on my page of recommendations from amazon. I checked the reasoning, using the convenient little clicker, and found that Bunyan was expected to appeal to me because I had reviewed "Gosta Berling's Saga." That, my friends, is firm evidence that computers are still short on intuition.

Fascinated, however, I read the eight reviews of this fairly obscure title, and found that they were all written by sincere believers in the strict Calvinist theology preached by John Bunyan in his lifetime, according to which we are all "sinners in the hands of an angry God" whose judgment passes our apprehension. According the Calvin and Bunyan, our 'works' and even our eagerness to be 'saved' is of no fundamnetal importance; as one reviewer writes, "we do not choose God; God chooses us." That's not a system of belief I find appealing, though I ought to be consoled by the idea that God might 'choose' me whether I like it or not.

Bunyan was a cogent writer, though his style takes acclimatization. This biography is a major document of English history, as sure a way to get a feel for bookish English Puritanism as the masques of Henry Purcell are for the other side, the party of the theater-loving Cavaliers. As such, it belongs on the shelf with other profound self-exposures - Augustine's, Cellini's, Rousseau's - but don't expect the man to be any more attractive than his fanatical faith. He was truly "an angry sinner in hands he thought were God's."

I purchased the book "The Art of Jonathan Green' with the desire to capture and keep some of the southern charm felt and beauty witnessed on a recent visit to Charleston, South Carolina. The book is simply amazing from cover to cover. It is one to be displayed so that all can be captured by the beautiful imagery that reaches from beyond and through each page and touches the soul.

It is given to particular artists to do the impossible. Claude Monet paints light. Andrew Wyeth paints time passing. You can hear Jonathan Green's paintings. In "Bessie Mae", he paints not only the singer, the song itself springs from the canvas. "Silence With The Birds" transfixes the mind, making common imagery so new that you may as well have just been born. Green belongs with those rare artists whose work leaves you seeing and feeling the world in a new way. You can spend an hour with this book, go for a walk and see fresh grace in the movement of the human body, sense something new in your step. All that and more, you will find in this book. There is in every painting the identifiable signature and the present quest - something that goes to your belly, and makes you whole. This is world-class art, visionary, accomplished, redemptive. Green's work expresses the spirit of a people who endured hundreds of years of brutal oppression, created the greatest religious songs in the language and fought a revolution without guns. Here is love, made visible. As in Rilke's poem about Apollo: 'You must change your life."

Last month I went to Charleston, South Carolina for the first time and discovered the art of Jonathan Green at Gallery Chuma. If I could be a piece of art, I would be painted by him. The art is shown in chronological order and the evolution of style through his career is evidenced. There is one color plate per page so each piece is easily viewed. All are in color. The art section is prefaced by three lyrical, thought-provoking chapters about the artist, the relationship of Gullah heritage, African American aesthetic, and his art as an expression of the layers of experiences mixed cultures bring to humanity. One chapter mentioned the flowing movement in the artwork which is also what first piqued my interest. I just can't help but wish that all that is good in the world of Jonathan Green's art could be in everyone and make our world a better place.
