Geography Books

This book is really cool with it's aerial views of the coast line from Connecticut to Maine. It's really good to see what some of the harbors and coast lines look like before you try to venture into them with a boat.

This is a very clear and elegant book which will appeal to students approaching coastal studies for the first time at the college or university level. The material is up-to-date and a vast improvement on existing texts that have been in print for many years.

A Colonial Complex provides a very interesting look at an often forgotten war in colonial America. The Yamasee War fought by the Indians that would become known as the creeks was a devastating conflict for both sides. It shaped the colonial mindset with regards to the Creeks and developed the role of the Cherokee for the future of colonial relations. It sets the stage for the development of Georgia as a colony and continues the erosion of Indian sovereignty by adding more boundaries to the creek nation. There are very few books that analyze the creek and almost none that take into account the Yamasee war. If you are interested in colonial affairs this is a must read. It is well written, concise and straight to the point.

For young students of colonial American history, or as preparation for a visit to a living history museum, Bobbie Kalman has presented an amazingly entertaining overview of crafts and the people who do them.

Almost like a visit to Colonial Williamsburg, readers will explore the cabinetmaker, gunsmith, silversmith, wigmaker, milliner and much more! The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs of costumed historical interpreters in authentic settings and written in a lively style that is sure to captivate students.

Like all of Bobbie Kalman's wonderful books, Colonial Crafts is not to be missed!

Gregory does a great job of connecting geographical concepts to recent conflicts in the Middle East, and while it is academically geared, The Colonial Present is very accessible for the average reader. While I don't necessarily agree with his argument on Israel, he is very convincing. A must read for anyone interested in the Middle East or geography; really every American should read this.

Few geomorphology books provide adequate color pics to complement the text due to costs. This title is an exception. If you were disappointed as I was with READING THE EARTH by J. Wyckoff, consider this release.
And get a copy at around $12 before they're back up to $90.

How have Americans transformed their environment, and how have political systems handled conflicts over resources and conservation issues over the decades? Columbia Guide To American Environmental History is the only major reference to explore these themes, and deserves a place on the shelf of any college-level library with a strong collection in environmental issues and political intervention.

The Bobrowsky edited book is an excellent must-read book for anyone conducting serious intellectual inquiry into a potential asteroid impact with the Earth. The articles are a wonderful collection on a very serious topic. The reader gains multiple insights on the varied interdisciplinary issues related to asteroids. This is a fine contribution to the current state of knowledge. The book would make for an excellent university text in either astronomy or public policy agenda-setting and formulation. I highly recommend the investment in this book if you have serious interest in the history of asteroid/comet impacts as well as what humans may do to mitigate such a disaster in the future. I believe this book to be the best I have read on the topic of asteroids impacts. I am pleased to have added it to my personal library.

This groundbreaking 1982 work by Harvard landscape scholar John Stilgoe remains a standard text for cultural geographers, landscape historians and others interested in historic patterns of development throughout this country. It still has not been equalled in its depth or scope. Stilgoe weaves together an astounding amount of historical detail in a scholarly yet readable style that offers insight after insight into how various regional and European cultural forces have shaped the American landscape.
