I gave this book, and its companion book on history, to my good friend who was recovering from hip surgery. She is a former history teacher and I hoped she would enjoy these. She did and said they thoroughly entertained her. She didn't even know all the answers - something she was sure would be the case.

Great piece of literary work, I simply could not put this one down. Watson organizes his arguments so well that you find yourself completely covinced upon finishing the text.

Expands ideas about GIS anlaysis

This book really made me think about GIS analysis in a new way. This book covers topics such as thinking of maps "map-ematically", distance across a terrain rather than just straight lines, slope and aspect as mathematical surface derivatives (as in calculus), and much, much more. If you are serious about GIS and spatial modeling, this book is a must read.

Berry has a way of looking a GIS analysis that is different than anybody else I have read or listened to. And his presentation style is exciting and fresh. I have seen Berry in live presentations twice and he never fails to disappoint for content or style.

This book is a must-have for readers who seek to understand future relations between Europe and the United States. An A-list group of authors contributed to Beyond Paradise and Power; just as important, however, this is one of the very few books on the subject that does not seek consensus from its contributors. Kudos to editor Tod Lindberg for this stellar collection of essays.

These are the best Bible maps I have ever used. My Bible study group literally went "Ooooo!" when I showed the maps to them. While reading through the book of Acts, I was able to follow precisely where the disciples traveled. Every location listed in scripture could be located on these maps. Probably the best thing about them is that they are the same size as a standard bible and can be attached inside. They are compact and easy to read. The overlays showing modern day geography have been particularly helpful when studying current events.

I am always happy to see a new collaboration from author Debbie S. Miller and Jon Van Zyle and this offering doesn't disappoint! This is a great book to use when introducing school age children to the great state of Alaska. With the help of a bald eagle we travel through 3,100 miles of Alaska covering all five regions--Southeast, Southcentral, Southwest, Interior, and Arctic. Each area highlighted receives one illustration and one page of text. The back of the book contains Alaska facts, State symbols, Climate records, and has additional information on all the Alaskan special places covered in the book's text. I would love to have seen the Fairbanks area as well as the farthest north community in North America, Barrow, also included, but Alaska IS a big state and perhaps those areas as well as others will be included in the next (I hope there will be a next!) book.

A 1977 classic

In 1977, this book transformed a scientific field. In the 1990s, its reprinting is mainly of historic interest. Not much of the biogeochemistry data from Hubbard Brook in the intervening 20 years have been integrated into this "2nd edition."

The first book on a new science
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-18
Biogeography is a new discipline being formed by people approaching the problems of plant and animal distribution by combining the skills from diverse fields. The problem with biogeography is that it is so new that there isn't even a standard definition of what it is.

In August of 2005 a symposium was held with the title 'What is Biogeography.' The symposium provided a forum for a range of viewpoints and the way it is practiced. This book brings together the papers from the meeting, plus additional material, to provide a broad-based perspective on the nature of biogeography. The wide range of authors come from all across Europe and America.

A major part of the book, but a bit understated, is the exploration of the discipline's current relationship with other disciplines and discusses portntial development. This is intended to pave the way for its evolution into a stand-alone field.

Why the physical, tangible, real world is the way it is.

Review Date: 2002-02-08
This excellent textbook is less than 300 pages, and yet I didn't feel like I learned any less than someone who read a 1000 page textbook on the same subject. This is a comprehensive, introductory volume that is, surprisingly for a textbook, extremely well written. This book delivered Biogeography to my mind, and my great teacher Dr Patrick Armstrong of Univeristy of Western Australia made it come alive in my head. Everything you need to lead you into the fascinating study of our tangible world is here. Read it!

Biogeomorphology

Review Date: 2005-01-18
This was the first text to formalise the concept of biogeomorphology, and provides a diversity of chapters by different authors regarding the two-way interaction between organisms and geomorphological process and form. The chapters are flanked by useful discussions by Viles.

The field has developed rapidly since its publication, but still provides some very interesting and useful biogeomorphological case examples in a range of climatic environments.

Perhaps one small gripe is the apparent heavy favouring of vegetation over animals, although this is partly due to the development of the field at the time and certainly does not detract from what is presented.

An excellent introduction to biogeomorphology that should interest any student or professional with a background in physical geography, geomorphology or ecology.
